Airbus=>french=>'retard' is fr for 'slow'. As in 'slow down' (ease off throttle)
Ski_Fish_Bike@reddit
It means slow down in English too.

FTFY
Constant-Try8690@reddit
Thought this was flight sim for some reason
PlentyCoconut6905@reddit
Why did it call you that?
2wicky@reddit
It helps bring a pilots ego back down to the ground.
QuantumGTxx@reddit (OP)
It’s a reminder to “retard” the throttles
No idea why airbus called it that
CaptainRedPants@reddit
Retard is a French word that means to slow down or in the case of the airbus, pull the throttles.
Quirky_Inflation@reddit
That's not the usual meaning in French though
thesuperunknown@reddit
Because it’s one word, and it’s unambiguous. It’s shorter than REDUCE POWER, and there’s less potential for confusion than a directive like PULL BACK (pull up?) or PULL THROTTLE (full throttle?).
Wdwdash@reddit
It was also decided upon when the word “retard” wasn’t so much looked at as an insult. It is also being used as a verb, not a noun, where at its face value it means “slow down”
QuantumGTxx@reddit (OP)
Thats a good point, but I would have preferred idle or so personally
ThunderSundayer@reddit
Idle would have been perfect ngl. I think airbus engineers simply saw a chance and took it.
Mean_Passenger_7971@reddit
It's french.
Ok-Consequence-3117@reddit
Four times no less
Imtherealwaffle@reddit
planes have very long development cycles and this system was implemented before it was considered gauche to insult people like that.
Competitive_Cup7648@reddit
I love attention from the internet so I’m gonna go ahead and break the law
cat_prophecy@reddit
Even if this were in the US, what law is being broken?
Apprehensive_Cost937@reddit
Not all countries are as prudish as USA.
QuantumGTxx@reddit (OP)
What exactly isn’t legal here pal?
This isn’t the US
Tony_Three_Pies@reddit
Sure it is! This is clearly Berlin, New Hampshire!
IAmKaeL-@reddit
Shocking that a section of the world thinks everything revolves around them to the point that stuff like this, getting to visit the cockpit if you're friends/family of well-known pilots, etc. are considered "breaking the law"
I'd imagine that it's not hard for one to assume that things are different in Europe/Asia.
fwankfwort_turd@reddit
US Defaultism.
rudedogg1304@reddit
Good for you, no need to tell us though.
Valspared1@reddit
Always get a kick out of hearing the plane call the pilots stupid.
Whole_Lifeguard_6046@reddit
Then you should love this video
teahugger@reddit
That’s embarrassing
Owlthirtynow@reddit
Cool!!!
