Rodents of unusual size? I don't believe they exist.

try the 1870s

On one hand, that's triggering a very real childhood danger and a huge red flag. On the other hand, I'm drawn to it in a childlike manner, like how we tried to off ourselves as kids.

Our sketchy bike ramps, for example, was a good example of how we'd cheat death as kids.

Alright, that makes a lot more sense. Or making parachutes out of sheets and jumping from trees.
Hopefully we can agree that cheating death and trying to off ourselves hit differently though, lol.

It depends on whew you were standing I suppose. The two look eerily similar.

Early 1980’s here… I definitely thought I would encounter way more of this based on my exposure as a child!

I also thought I would encounter so much more lava than I ever have.

I still remember being in Skegness when I was about 7 years old and walking past 2 boys and a woman looking really distressed and my mum telling me they got trapped in quicksand. For years I thought about that whenever I was on the beach.

Should have been a fortress in 28 years later.

Definitely real, but I was disappointed to realize it doesn't work like in Pitfall.

I went to a summer camp where they had us swim in quick sand. It looked very much like grassy sand with a thin layer of standing water on top. If you think about it for a second, there's no reason water wouldn't drain into the sand.
It was fairly easy to move around in, but it was in a shady spot and they were taking kids into it. I can see how if you were to wander on it unexpectedly, and it was drying out in the sun, it might be more dangerous, but all us kids got out unassisted.

I remember them teaching us what to do if we ever got into quicksand at the same time they were teaching stop, drop, and roll.
