This men's insecurity towards Chinese cars and EV's is amusing. And this is from someone who likedwatching the trio and did so from the earliest episodes of top gear.
Iamthe0c3an2@reddit
They did acknowledge it back on their China special. They kinda knew China might take over one day and they’re clearly on track in the car front.
Latter-Yesterday-450@reddit
Yeah but, have you fead any longevity reviews of Chinese cars or Teslas...?
Or owned and driven one?
Durzel@reddit
Mate has had an MG4 (EV) since 2022. Has never broken down and cost him buttons to run. 🤷🏻♂️
If they were truly hopeless generally speaking then everyone would know about it.

In 2023 SAIC Motor were the 3rd largest plug-in electric motor/car company...
Making cars since the 50s, and have 75+ years of manufacturing experience.
They're partially partnered with VW, and have an extremely varied catalogue of vehicles.
They're so not an example of what I was referring to lol.
Cherry have been making cars for 25 years. Sued by GM for copying their engineering.
They've only really been exporting globally for 2 or 3 years. And electrical reliability issues are consistent. Which is why they offer long warranties. They want to become an established brand, and obviously out compete native brands.
The MG4 is a pretty highly rates car in the UK.
THE Jaecoo and Tiggo are top selling budget cars. With reviews that reflect their build quality and reliability. 🤷♂️

I have a Chinese car. The one CarWow crowned car of the year, Tiggo 8. It’s bang on for the price, any comparable euro made car is at least 25% more, sadly
Latter-Yesterday-450@reddit
Same as Jaecoo, made by the same Cherry Chinese manufacturer.
Crowned car of the year, like 70 days into the year. Im sure thag wint change. And CarWow said it was disappointing to drive...
CarMagazine gave it 3/5.
Jaecoo is being slated for cheap and unreliable now. Likely the same base of car since its the same manufacturer under a different name.
I personally wouldn't trust 1 seemingly mixed review on a car with no longevity testing, and from a completely unknown company.
And yes, Euro cars are more money. Or they aren't, theres lots of brands.
Or get a 2 year old Sportage if you want the size. Doesn't look as "up market", but I think people know these black Chinese brands are all budget cars anyway.
ICEman_c81@reddit
yeah I didn’t want a used car, and budget was a bit tight. Put 5k miles on it since Christmas when I got it. Been solid for me, so far. You get what you pay for 💯
Btw from what I understand Jaecoo is Tiggo 7 underneath, a tier below the 8, so it might be built even worse, who knows. I needed 7 seats so didn’t consider that one at all
Latter-Yesterday-450@reddit
Yep. Budget car buys you budget quality.

Maybe he read Apple in China and is annoyed at the IP theft?
I think it’s great! Save the planet by stealing Apple and Tesla engineering and combining it with state subsidy, zero margin and cheap labor. Seem okay to me!
Latter-Yesterday-450@reddit
Except they're not good quality as Tesla (despite their unreliability), nor are their electronics as reliable as Apple (despite their faults).
Way-twofrequentflyer@reddit
All true! It’s just unclear if it matters to consumers. None of them would exist if their engineers hadn’t been trained by Apple and Tesla though. BYDs vehicles were terrible before they started hiring engineers who had worked for Foxconn and Tesla
bingo_for_the_win@reddit
I had a mg zs EV for four years, did not give me a single issue the entire time and was a good car for the price. I upgraded to a BYD seal and have had that for close to a year and a half and it is the best car I have had by a long way. I am in Australia so the Skoda EV or any European EV does not cost the same as a BYD.
NoceboHadal@reddit
He's never been a fan of any asian/American cars and he hates AV.
I honestly don't know how you got any other opinion of him from watching from the earliest episodes of top gear.
Trades46@reddit
Where i stand too. I like Clarkson but I feel perhaps age is clouding his judgement.
shaolinspunk@reddit
By "age" you mean snobbery.
RandomNick42@reddit
By “snobbery” you mean dickwaddery
JoeSicko@reddit
He's just a run of the mill Tory.
sleepdeep305@reddit
I think people are starting to figure that out now that there’s less of a sarcastic boundary layer between presenter/viewer than there ever has been during his career
JoeSicko@reddit
He's not playing his climate change denier character as much now that he's farming. Damn ecomentalist!
sleepdeep305@reddit
He’s been that way for decades though
mopar_md@reddit
This is our generation's version of the anti-Japanese insecurity of the 80s
SSnide@reddit
Chinese cars are shit.
SkyJohn@reddit
Jesus Christ, why did they design the headlights like that?
Upbeat-Serve-6096@reddit
Not a hard thing to achieve. The dandruff I just washed off is better than Chinese cars
SnooCapers938@reddit
‘£100,000 car is better than £30,000 car’
Shocking.
twizzle101@reddit
100k ? Don’t they start around 150/160 now! And can go to 250+
sionnach@reddit
A friend of mine had a Bentley. He had it serviced, only big thing was a change of tyres. We worked out you could have bought a very recent used Polo for the price of the service.
FailFastandDieYoung@reddit
"What did he do, buy you a Golf??"
Ancient-Cow-1038@reddit
Yeah, £160k base price. Remember that the one Slow drove on the programme had extras that cost more than Hammond’s entire car.
Teaofthetime@reddit
This blanket hatred for Chinese cars is hilarious.
chengstark@reddit
No shit Sherlock moment
Sunburys@reddit
How many Chinese cars has Clarkson tested
Phoenix_Kerman@reddit
he's reviewed some recent volvos so it's not zero
Motor-Assistant-4045@reddit
He did 19 miles in a BYD Seal. So at least that much.
Meowscles_dad@reddit
& he tested a Honky
sendme_your_cats@reddit
What did you call me
tktktktktktktkt@reddit
At least in my country in Europe, there is a massive problem with spare parts. You have to wait couple weeks to have things replaced.
Sunburys@reddit
In Brazil, Chinese car brands have been getting bigger and bigger, and they’re honestly the best cars available compared to others in the same price range. Because of their growing presence, there are no spare parts problems
Volkswagen in particular is looking like a dinosaur in comparison to byd and GWM.
shaolinspunk@reddit
Your weekly reminder that Clarkson is privileged beyond imagination and blissfully unaware of the concept of living on a budget.
kaffekopp69@reddit
There is no such thing as cheap and cheerful. It’s cheap and nasty and expensive and cheerful
RaymondBumcheese@reddit
Expensive car better than cheap cars. And on that bombshell, joins us next week for more searing insights.
But this time written in Flemish, for some reason.
hopenoonefindsthis@reddit
For how much it cost, that should be the bare minimum.
