Have you ever seriously said “what a crock!” Or is it just an expression from movies?
Posted by alyhasnohead@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 178 comments
Bonus question are there other movie expressions you’d never actually use in real life?
twxf@reddit
I've said "What?! Am I holding a crock of shit?" a few times to friends, but that's a quote from Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. So it seems like "crock of shit" has been in England for a while.
BeneficialShame8408@reddit
No. I'm 36 and we didn't say that growing up in socal lol
Dusty_Old_McCormick@reddit
Yes I have, mostly when children are within earshot.
Jsmith2127@reddit
I have heard several people say "what a crock of shit", but never just "what a crock"
Reduak@reddit
I use it all the time, and since a certain US political figure came down an escalator & announced he was running for president in 2016, I use it A LOT more.
GrimSpirit42@reddit
In reality, the phrase "What a Crock" is incomplete, and is always followed by two words.
ConstructionOk4996@reddit
Yes I have. "What a crock of crap!". More than once.
DoubleBreastedBerb@reddit
I have, especially when I feel the need to vehemently express myself in Old-Timey.
Quirky-Invite7664@reddit
Me, too.
Have also used: Jeepers, gee whillikers, zoinks, dagnabbit and groovy
when_music_hits@reddit
Heavens to betsy.
CaryWhit@reddit
You got moxie, kid!
Loisgrand6@reddit
Ok, Shaggy
alyhasnohead@reddit (OP)
Ok that’s what I thought it might be! I think it’s like the two fingered v sign for us Brits we wouldn’t use it if we’re actually VERY angry at someone because it doesn’t carry any serious weight. Would you say that’s the same with this expression?
chauntikleer@reddit
Yes, I think that's a pretty good description. I do occasionally use "what a crock" for situations that don't rise to the level of "what a load of fucking bullshit"
alyhasnohead@reddit (OP)
I love it. I wanna bring it to England. Do I have your permission?
YoshiandAims@reddit
Go for it
dystopiadattopia@reddit
If you're asking me as an American, then sure. There's just the small matter of the licensing fee.
Ghoulish_kitten@reddit
Oh wait
Ghoulish_kitten@reddit
Stop with this permission joke, we’re all speaking English here.
ferret_80@reddit
For each time you use it you must dump the contents of one tea bag into your nearest harbor.
After 100 tea bags you have earned free usage.
Impulse2915@reddit
What a crock is old-timey? Great Ceasar's Ghost!
TheSauceOx@reddit
No but it’s a big country so it might be said somewhere.
Consistent_Damage885@reddit
Yes
Eff-Bee-Exx@reddit
Yes.
drumzandice@reddit
We do say it.
Aquarius_K@reddit
No I've said. But usually I just say "What a bunch of BS"
Funny-Dare-3823@reddit
I've said it plenty of times. But it's usually the full expression, what a crock of shit. Because I'm fed up and angry.
KevrobLurker@reddit
I remember the first time I ran across crock. It was in the comic book Green Lantern, vo!ume 2, #86, Oct-Nov 1971. † Author Denny O'Neil put it in the mouth of Roy Harper, the Green Arrow's teen sidekick aka, Speedy.
I figured out that the word was short for crock of shit. I have used the full expression on occasion.

SabresBills69@reddit
crock is dhort for crockpot
Outrageous-Pin-4664@reddit
No, a crock is "an earthenware pot or jar."
A crockpot is specifically a crock used for slow cooking on an electric burner.
Crocks have been around for thousands of years, whereas crockpots have only been around for about half a century.
turdferguson3891@reddit
And then there's country crock which comes in a plastic tub that your grandma uses for leftovers.
Outrageous-Pin-4664@reddit
Which get left in the fridge for three weeks, and become a country crock of shit.
KevrobLurker@reddit
Nope. You label it. Write what it is & when you refrigerated it or froze it & you will reduce the # of science projects. Use masking tape or freezer tape.
KevrobLurker@reddit
And Crockpot is Rival's trademark for their brand of slow cooker.
165averagebowler@reddit
I say it but it is missing a word lol. Correct phrase is “what a crock of shit”
Silly_Guard907@reddit
If I say it I say, “Well that’s a crock.”
Living_Molasses4719@reddit
Specifically, a crock of shit
QV79Y@reddit
Pretty sure I have said it.
Saints-and-Poets@reddit
My mom says it!
Normal-Sprinkles6799@reddit
We say it all the time. Probably several times a week, espec. when watching the news. Quite common.
Astute_Primate@reddit
I've only said the full version (crock of shit) unironically. But I'm from a party of the country where we cuss a lot and sometimes you need to quantify the shit in order to fully express your feelings. As much as I love the metric system, 2.36 kilograms of shit just doesn't sound as satisfying.
bowel_mover42069@reddit
I don't think I've ever said or heard another person say "what a crock" in my life.
Cold-Monk5436@reddit
Yes, almost. I say what crock of bullshit.
tcrhs@reddit
I’ve never heard that before.
CaryWhit@reddit
I usually finish the whole phase
Equivalent-Speed-631@reddit
Yes, yes I have. But the full expression, what a crock of shit.
sgtm7@reddit
I have used it occasionally.
quietly_annoying@reddit
I know I've said "what a crock of shit" when referring to the crap being pulled in Washington DC.
WiseQuarter3250@reddit
"what a crock" is the polite, non offensive colloquial expression that otherwise might be the more offensively scatological "shit!" or "what a [load of] crap!" or "what a crock full of shit"
cool_weed_dad@reddit
I’ve heard “crock of shit” but it’s not a super commonly used phrase. I’ve never heard “crock” used on its own as a pejorative.
Parking_Champion_740@reddit
Yes for sure I’ve said it
medigapguy@reddit
As an American, you can bloody well take it
burlingk@reddit
It is not a phrase I use, but I have heard others use it.
Baby Boomers and older Gen X are more likely to use it than others.
Ok_Driver_6895@reddit
Older Gen X here. I have never said "what a crock" or variations thereof.
burlingk@reddit
I was honestly guesstimating the age range. :)
I just know it's not a term normally used under 50.
Ok_Driver_6895@reddit
Yeah, that's fine. It probably also depends on region. I don't think I ever heard my parents use it either. My mom's a Boomer and my dad is Silent Gen.
burlingk@reddit
I'm GenX or Xennial depending on who you ask.
You're probably right about region.
jtbeith@reddit
"This is a crock of shit" sounds more modern
YourGuyK@reddit
I've said "What a crock of shit," yes.
IMakeOkVideosOk@reddit
I’ve heard what a crock of shit multiple times
jigokubi@reddit
As others have noted, it must be followed by "of shit."
I will trade the usage of it for the use of "wanker."
Nodeal_reddit@reddit
I say it. Usually it’s “a crock of shit”, but I’ll leave off the potty word sometimes.
Quirky_Commission_56@reddit
I usually say “What a crock of shit”.
Chemical-Mix-6206@reddit
I don't use it that often. Mostly after a politician speaks. That was a crock full of shit!
Over_Equipment4661@reddit
I say that’s a complete crock, or what a crock and everyone knows it.
Quicherbichen1@reddit
I use it quite frequently. It's my favorite way to say "bull shit!" in a non-vulgar way.
milkandsugar@reddit
I say both "what a crock" and "what a load" to mean the same thing with the implied "of shit."
rinky79@reddit
I have and do use the phrase, "that's a crock of shit" when something is dishonest.
Only_Presentation758@reddit
I have said that when I couldn’t say “That’s bullshit!” in front of someone but by all means lead the effort to get it going across the pond!
callmeKiKi1@reddit
I have used this phrase. Usually when presented with obvious bull crap and being unwilling to call it such for some reason.
mostlygray@reddit
I've said, "What a crock of shit." on many occasions. It's a fairly standard saying. You might also say "That guy is a crock of shit." You do need to include the "shit" part of the saying.
peekandlumpkin@reddit
Yeah but usually I use the full "what a crock of shit."
turdferguson3891@reddit
Yes but only if it's a crock of shit. I don't know if crock of shite works as well.
Extra_Routine_6603@reddit
I have though its usually has more. "What a crock of shit" depending on what it is may evolve to horse shit
ubiquitous-joe@reddit
The full expression is “…crock of shit,” and I have said that. But sometimes movies or TV will drop the “shit” part for ratings reasons. This was more true on the past than now. “Shit” isn’t especially strong profanity, but it all depends on audience and time period.
Cheap_Coffee@reddit
I say "what a crock!" every morning when I read the newspaper.
ELMUNECODETACOMA@reddit
Not since 2012, you don't.
(*) "Crock" was a three-panel daily comic strip syndicated for publication in newspapers from 1975 to 2012. It was loosely set in a desert Foreign Legion fort.
alyhasnohead@reddit (OP)
I wanna add another question if I may. Is it supposed to be a crock pot? Or another form of crock?
Cheap_Coffee@reddit
A crock is an earthenware vessel. Google told me so.
Push_the_button_Max@reddit
I hear that!
NiennaLaVaughn@reddit
I say it and the more complete "what a crock of shit."
No idea what you consider a "movie expression" to say what I use or hear.
alyhasnohead@reddit (OP)
I mean like I’ve only seen people say this in movies and I’ve never heard an American use it in real life
Dandibear@reddit
It's an old people thing (I use it and am 47) but yeah, go for it. I use "bloody hell" over here all the time, where it's mostly just eccentric and not especially vulgar.
This will be the trade. You get "what a crock" and I keep using "bloody hell". Go forth and be vocally annoyed.
rolyfuckingdiscopoly@reddit
I very rarely see this outside of movies, and I don’t think I have personally ever said it. So it’s likely regional or something-else-al. Don’t worry; your question was valid lol.
pyramidalembargo@reddit
Bunches and bunches of times. I'm 63.
Quirky-Flight-9812@reddit
I still use it. I'm 61
alyhasnohead@reddit (OP)
I would be honoured to hear you say it 🫡
NiennaLaVaughn@reddit
But if I do use and hear it (like this) I've no idea you wouldn't think we did. If I don't, it probably isn't in my mind at all. LOL. You'd have to specify the phrases.
holymacaroley@reddit
I don't say it often, but when I have, it was the full phrase.
Outrageous-Pin-4664@reddit
I use the short version when in polite company.
sholt1142@reddit
I actually said "that's a crock of shit" to my Ph.D. advisor the first time I met him. I was 20, give me a little slack. We were discussing an external research paper, and I didn't think the methodology was sound.
I've learned to be more less abrasive...
StOnEy333@reddit
I have said “That’s a crock of shit” which is where I believe the shortened saying comes from.
AdministrativeFig816@reddit
0:42 is peak
Dry-Cancel-3168@reddit
I do. It's short for what a crock of shit.
RedLegGI@reddit
It’s real, but “what a crock of shit” is more common
Responsible_Side8131@reddit
I’ve never said “what a crock” but I have definitely said “what a crock of bullshit”
WinterRevolutionary6@reddit
I’ve never heard crock used like that but it strikes me as British
KevrobLurker@reddit
It's American. I learned it in the, early '70s, but there are citations dating back to the '40s.
https://greensdictofslang.com/entry/qkexnky
This-Reindeer6063@reddit
I don't think I've ever heard that😅
Push_the_button_Max@reddit
Gen Xer here….
Yep!
I have also referred to “my salad days.”
And, if someone did something bad and got caught we’d say,
”ooooooooooooh, MO-TED!” (or “Busted”)
Which now, I assume, was like saying, Demoted, maybe?
Another old timey phrase my Grandmother would say when we were all leaving the house as a group (for instance, to go out to dinner, or going shopping), she’d say,
“We’re off to the races!”
Then, when we’d return she say, “Back home again, broke!”
Ok_Driver_6895@reddit
That's so wild. I'm also Gen X and I've never said or heard anyone say those. I love how varied American culture can be.
shammy_dammy@reddit
Yes. I've also been known to use the full version, what a crock of shit.
No_Damage_4226@reddit
Is there a British equivalent I could bring to the states?
alyhasnohead@reddit (OP)
“Bollocks mate”
getElephantById@reddit
No, I'm afraid I can't permit it.
It's roughly equivalent to the equally old-timey "what a load of rubbish", which sounds much better in a British accent. You all have plenty of great phrases, and as another of our idioms—which you also are not allowed to import—goes, you've gotta dance with the one who brung you.
alyhasnohead@reddit (OP)
Ok fine but you guys don’t get to use the C word anymore. You’re not using it right.
LMrningStar@reddit
Yes. I've also said "What a load of cobblers!".
ITrCool@reddit
Oh absolutely. It may be considered "old fashioned" as a saying here in the States (comes more from my parents' generation), but I still say it rather than "that's total "bull****" just because I was raised not to use harsh language. So, it's kind of a "mental memory" thing.
TheOnlyJimEver@reddit
Go for it! As others have said, the full expression is usually, "What a crock of shit!" but a lot of movies and shows cut it short. To be fair, a lot of people do, too. It sort of falls into that category of expression like, "If the shoe fits, wear it." A lot of people just say, "If the shoe fits..." and everyone knows the rest of the expression.
duabrs@reddit
Just said it. Twice.
RodeoBoss66@reddit
You're allowed to say it only if you give us permission to use "Cor blimey, guv'nuh!"
alyhasnohead@reddit (OP)
We accept on the condition we also have license to use “what in tarnation?!”
MyUsername2459@reddit
That is an acceptable trade.
FivebyFive@reddit
Your terms are acceptable.
RodeoBoss66@reddit
Oh, you're always welcome to use that one! 😄
Manatee369@reddit
It’s not that old an expression. I still use it, and I hear it fairly often. It’s short for “crock of shit” or “crock of crap”.
Wilfried84@reddit
I say it often enough. Or maybe more often, "What a crock of shit."
Ghoulish_kitten@reddit
“Crock of shit” is how Ive used it, and I assume there is already some variation used out there. ??
easy_Money@reddit
I don't know if I've ever said it myself, but I was doing a podcast interview with a retired baseball GM and he said it, gave me a chuckle
LostExile7555@reddit
I always say, "What a crock of shit!" The "or shit" is an important aspect of American culture. It's our shibboleth.
Thelonius16@reddit
Only when I order French Onion Soup with the cheese down the sides.
Spiritual_Being5845@reddit
The expression as I have heard it is “what a crock of shit.” My husband owns a shirt that says “what a” followed by a picture of a crockpot with a poop emoji in it.
Lonely_Sale9707@reddit
First heard this expression in London by a lady cop about 15 years ago.
TokyoDrifblim@reddit
Only ever heard "a crock of shit" but even that isn't common
Exact-Message8325@reddit
It's usually, "what a crock of shit."
djmcfuzzyduck@reddit
Considering the phrase is what a crock of shit like this post, yes.
Steamsagoodham@reddit
As someone in their early 30s it’s not a phrase I commonly hear at all. I understand what it means, but using the term “crock” comes off as old-timey and outdated. Replacing it with something like “load” is far more common.
AhSoulsOnFire@reddit
I say “that’s a crock of shit”
gdubh@reddit
I’ve said the complete “what a crock of shit” or “that’s a crock of shit” many, many times.
Ill-Secretary8386@reddit
Yes I have.
SubstantialPressure3@reddit
That's only half the expression. I'm Gen X, it was a common boomer ( and silent generation, and previous generation) expression.
The whole phrase is "a crock of shit". A crock is a ceramic container that people used to store things. A crock of butter, other things. ( It's where we get the name of a crock pot. The crock is the ceramic container that goes into the pot)
Boomers would have been familiar with crocks. Gen X and layer generations, less so.
"Tupperware of shit" doesn't really have the same ring to it.
It's not an expression from the movies. It's an expression that's fallen out of use. Most people don't use crocks for storage anymore.
river-running@reddit
I've definitely said "crock of 💩" before, but it's not a common phrase for me.
Reasonable-Penalty43@reddit
I have only used it as “What a crock of sh$t!
But I have used it.
StillC5sdad@reddit
It's a crock of shit.
la-anah@reddit
Never just "what a crock" but I have used the full "crock of shit" expression. It's a variation on bullshit. They shorten it in movies to get past censorship issues for films below an R rating. But you'd have to be pretty prim to shorten it in actual use.
RHS1959@reddit
Go for it. Personally I’m more likely to say the full “crock of shit” (meaning completely unbelievable and ridiculous, not smelly and disgusting) but it has the advantage that in politer settings you can say “that’s a complete crock” and leave the rest unsaid, but everybody hears it in their head.
TsundereLoliDragon@reddit
It's short for "what a crock of shit". I'm sure I've used it at least once in my life.
Ok_Concentrate4461@reddit
Only if I have reason to cut myself off from saying “… of shit!”
Crazy_Raven_Lady@reddit
I’m surprised so many people have said it. I’ve never said it and it’s not something I hear other people say either. I’m on the west coast so it must be a thing in other parts of the country.
Pomeranian18@reddit
It's fading out, but people still say, "What a crock," in the East Coast.
Push_the_button_Max@reddit
I’m west coast too, I think it’s just old-timey..
Tabitheriel@reddit
It’s actually “what a crock of sh*t”.
No-Objective2143@reddit
Yep quite often when listening to the rotten cheeto.
Imaginary_Ladder_917@reddit
I’ve used it. It’s a good expression of you want to avoid swearing. Permission granted
machagogo@reddit
Usually crock of shit, but I've stopped at crock depending on the people around me and/or the place i was
Ms-Metal@reddit
Yeah, many times. But the full saying, what a crock of shit! I'm not aware of this coming from any movie.
alyhasnohead@reddit (OP)
In my head it’s one of the kids from a 90s movie and the parents telling them off for swearing. I wanna say it was in uncle buck? I might be wrong, I usually am.
Hoosier_Jedi@reddit
Seeing as how “Uncle Buck” is from the 80s… 🤷♂️
alyhasnohead@reddit (OP)
Told you I’m usually wrong 💪
malibuklw@reddit
I’ve never stopped the expression at crock
HavBoWilTrvl@reddit
If you need permission, I give you mine. 😀
CA5P3R_1@reddit
It's "what a crock of shit". Yes you may use it.
wieldymouse@reddit
Yes, I have, especially when I couldn't say bull shit.
Blue85Heron@reddit
I’m more likely to say the whole phrase: “What a crock of shit!”
Tangentkoala@reddit
I use the term malarkey. Which is a synonym for crock.
I feel all old timey using it and Joe Biden is to thank.
But that way of talking died out with the older generation,
We saw thats bullshit now
Push_the_button_Max@reddit
Gen Xer here….
Yep!
I have also referred to “my salad days.”
And, if someone did something bad and got caught we’d say, ”ooooooooooooh, MO-TED,” (or “Busted”) Which now, I assume, was like saying, Demoted, maybe?

“We’re off to the races!”
Then, when we’d return she say, “Back home again, broke!”
GrandBanana9285@reddit
I think maybe I still do say it on occasion, but it's "what a crock of shit!"
ophaus@reddit
Usually I'd say "crock of shit," but sometimes crock will sail alone.
Having_A_Day@reddit
Crock of shit or crock of horseshit. Maybe just "crock" if I'm watching my language.
Smart_Engine_3331@reddit
I don't think ive personally said it, but I know what it means.
KevrobLurker@reddit
I remember the first time I ran across crock. It was in the comic book Green Lantern, vo!ume 2, #86, Oct-Nov 1971. Author Denny O'Neil put it in the mouth of Roy Harper, the Green Arrow's teen sidekick aka, Speedy.

devilscabinet@reddit
I have said "what a crock of shit" before.
manderifffic@reddit
Yeah. There have been a few times when "What a crock of shit" has really felt like the best terminology.
ViolentCaterpillar@reddit
Gen Xer here. I don't hear it much anymore, but I grew up hearing it, mainly from adults. I say it occasionally.
No-Marsupial-7385@reddit
I say this all the time. But mostly as “What a crock of shit.”
blanknullvoidzero@reddit
I've definitely heard and said "crock of shit" before, but I wouldn't say it's very common.
Just another way to say "bullshit" basically.
Radiant_Music3698@reddit
The correct phrase is "what a crock of shit". If you're unaware, a crock is a food storage container popular in the old west, which is likely the era the term came from.
Just saying "what a crock" would be way rarer as there would be a need to cut it off. Trying to remove the vulgarity, or just speaking in half sentence coniptions from anger.
OpposumMyPossum@reddit
Yeah. Crock of baloney.
NoTime4YourBullshit@reddit
I’ve used the phrase “What a crock of shit” before. Not often but it’s happened.
wegochai@reddit
No. I would just say “what a piece of shit”
cleverburrito@reddit
My mom said “a crock of bull” and “fiddle sticks”
Current_Poster@reddit
Not lately, but I've code shifted my slang a few times in my life. So sometimes things just slip out that people might think of as odd. In actuality, it's more like "I just haven't used the phrase in a while".
docmoonlight@reddit
Yeah, it’s something you would say around a minor or maybe an older religious person you were trying to stay clean around. Same as subbing “bull” for “bullshit”.
StevenSaguaro@reddit
I say it, usually when I'm avoiding profanity
Eat-Ca-Ca@reddit
Crock of shit..
chockfulloffeels@reddit
I have.
thirdeyefish@reddit
I have. It is specifically a crock of shit.
superhex12345@reddit
