But the video is of a MonoTracer. They say ‘the bike is called the MonoRacer’ what we are looking at is not in fact a MonoRacer, like the comment suggests.
My suggested comment would be…
The bike is called the MonoTracer, now known as the MonoRacer.
The only thing I'd be worried about with an R8 are the aluminium subframes, how dirty the intake valves are and how expensive parts are... Aside from that, seems like a good purchase to me. But I work on my cars myself, so that makes things a lot cheaper for me.
Prices is quite high i agree, but it's probably the most efficient way of transport. (car)companies should do more like this, maybe a (reverse) teardrop trike for only one, maybe two persons which is very aerodynamic, light weight and compact. Cars are just way to inefficient for 99% of the time. Look around when you are in traffic how many 1500kg cars burning fuel are transporting 80kg of person and maybe a laptop and some groceries
Id love to drive one of these, or a good L7E vehicle, but they are either way to expensive (these obviously, but even vehicles like the microlino and similar are overpriced IMO) or just not useful enough, to little range/speed/safety, even if the vehicle class specifications would make it possible.
I imagine, that there are a lot of people similarly open to try new transport concepts like these or even stuff like velomobiles, but are just priced out.
The problem that they are so expensive i think is because they only make a few of them. Prices would drop drastically when they would make 1000 each day
I remember seeing these way back in 2005 or so on some BBS dedicated to cars. Someone was talking about the taxes for motorcycles vs cars in the various European municipalities made them incredibly cheap to insure and drive in cities. Would you have that much savings from it to justify?
For reference the motor vehicle registration tax in Denmark is 180% of the price of the car. (with lower rates for environmentally friendly models, but the base tax is 180%)
Hey I’m not defending it either. At least, if we’re gonna say ‘okay we’re densely populated and nobody has a need for these here privately so tax the bejeesus out of them’ then at least they should kill the ~20% bpm tax (which comes on top VAT) on the models that they DO want us to drive. That at least.
FUCKING THANK YOU!!!!! I’ve been trying to remember this game forever! I’d sit and play on our Nintendo 64 for hours. Do you know if it can still be played?!
Honestly this should be the future. A bunch of electric enclosed motorcycles with outrigger wheels would be way more fun, and way more sustainable than what the roads are like now.
I mean I remember the whole Elio concept and they had lots of problems in the US because they wanted to create the autocycle class. Basically they had problems because they were technically motorcycles in some states that you had to wear a helmet inside, and when paired with a seatbelt that's actually less safe.
I would be all for an Elio style trike that was cheap and mass produced. I like small cars. But the trend is customers want bigger and bigger. Also at the base level if a family can only have one vehicle it should be able to carry at least 3 and one has to be a car seat.
Why would you say “training wheels”? You’re not meant to stick your feet on the ground with this kind of setup and they aren’t deployed when you’re moving.
It isn't always up to you, particularly in cramped cities.
There's plenty of drivers out there who will put their car right next to you if they see even a hint of a gap.
It's the predecessor to the one above, and it's the exact same canopy design. I don't know where you're hallucinating two doors, but they're not in that video.
The tradeoff of total enclosure at the feet doesn't seem worth it to me, maybe some sort of flap that you can open by shoving your feet through or something along those lines would be better.
This is a great example of added design requirements being to the detriment of others.
I agree that it's not a good value, but as I recall, they were very fast (used a BMW k motor). At autobahn speeds they were way better on fuel than a motorcycle, so I think that was their "thing”. If you've spent any time on the autobahn at speed, you'll know how fast you go through fuel at those speeds, it's pretty depressing!
What? There's a gas station usually every 30 km +/-10. You'll certainly never have the problem of not making it from one to another before running out of fuel.
Can you name one of these bikes? With a relatively small 15 liter tank you'd need to use 30 liter per km to run out of gas in 50 km. The highest gas usage I could find for bikes is still less than 15 l/km.
Knew a guy a while ago who had a tuned Kawasaki liter bike that would do 2 km per liter at ~ 300 kmh. He was kinda disappointed after making all sorts of mods and finding out there was no where he could actually use it.
I checked the website, and there's only the electric version available.
But holy shit. 250kph top speed (electronically limited) and just a 7.5kWh per 100km is pretty impressive.
Shame the battery is tiny (28.5kwh) and no fast charging.
My knee-jerk reaction is that it's lame that they have to have electronic speed limit. Then after a second of just thinking about it, 250kph is already irresponsibly fast for a street legal bike, it's kind of cool that they can get away with putting the limit that high
Kilometers is not a measure of battery size. The battery is tiny, but so is the vehicle, so it doesn't really matter because it provides sufficient range.
Aptera are claiming that their solar EV can do 6.2 kWh per 100 km and that has too seats, but I guess we'll have to wait to see how that works out in practice.
Level 1 vs level 2 charging basically by the sounds of it from an American 120V standpoint. My PHEV with a 15.5kWh battery takes about 10-11 hours to charge at Level 1, and 2.5 hours at Level 2.
Level 1 doesn't really exist in europe because everything is 230v anyway. There are "granny chargers" that plug into a regular socket and deliver 3 kW, which is still double what level 1 would be in the US.
It's also not uncommon for European houses to have three phase power plugs for old water heaters or ovens. So they can tap directly into those lines for home charging.
Was going to say if it has heat this thing would be pretty sweet. No wind noise, no rain or bugs pelleting you, some nice tunes playing, little onboard storage, would be pretty cool.
Yeah, it removes all the agility for a concept that is more taxing on the motor. Think about it... Would you want a solution like this on a commuter bike?
I don't know if this thing has air conditioning or not, but it certainly solves the problem of being exposed to the elements while riding a motorcycle. It also solves the problem of needing to wear a special suit of motorcycle armor while riding a motorcycle. You could ride this to work in your work clothes and not need to change. If it still keeps the fuel efficiency of a motorcycle, which it probably improves on with aerodynamics, then it's actually solving lots of known problems.
As for the aesthetics, if you think it looks cool, then that's another bonus. If you don't, then it's not the vehicle for you.
I see it as a weird alternative to Smart or other small car. You go on motorcycle to feel open air and road, there is a whole philosophy about it. If it does not fit you, why not to go a small car with sunroof instead, because this look a hybrid no one asked for.
And you don’t understand that everyone has opinion, that might be different than yours. Did I write it should not exist or is doomed vehicle? All I said that I do not get it’s function, that’s it.
You claimed that everybody agrees with yours, and that anybody who doesn't is wrong. Again, your inability to understand words or how language works is a you problem.
It was the why anybody rides claim, but the "no one asked for" fits too. I've been riding for more than 45 years, and exposure to the elements is the part I like least about it. The polar opposite of why I do it.
It has air con, heated seats, stereo, sunroof, multi touch display with gps navigation, etc.
The shell and seatbelt means no helmet needed, it has electronic extendable legs for stopping, there's a version where it's all hand controls, and more.
Also quite a lot safer - how many people could crash a motorcycle while not wearing a helmet or any protective gear... and simply get out and walk away?
I'm curious about this coz on the one hand I'd expect lower injuries from falls but on the other in a severe collision you might be better off flying off your bike instead of being trapped inside a container without a helmet and turned to paté
One can't argue about taste. I'd prefer a different colour scheme that looks less like a sports bicyclists outfit, but I like the contraption. Not sure if its utility is improved over a motorcycle, which already has a bare minimum of utility value in most contexts.
utility would be air con and better protection (though still no crumple zones and would be very nasty in a accident with a solid vehicle or if losing control wont slide off
Safety and weather protection were my bets too. But it still doesn't greatly improve the utility of it. You now have a more comfortable and safer mode of driving around alone with no way of carrying anything. Now, if it turned out to have more space for passengers or cargo, it would improve on motorbikes.
Born in the 90s, the Nod Mod unit from Command and Conquer is my first association (black and red painted). Amime kids will probably think of Akira.
Tron is a good call. I hadn't thought of that.
This thing must be a wet dream for a whole bunch of 80s and 90s kids.
The energy used to push a vehicle through air goes up exponentially, it’s why you can find videos of men in their late 60s riding velomobiles at highway speeds, and this is even more aero than just riding a motorcycle.
The problem with motorcycles is that they're very aerodynamically inefficient. This makes their highway range terrible, which is a big problem for electric motorcycles. IIRC the top spec Zero motorcycle is a 150lb motorcycle with a 350lb battery and still gets less than 100mi of range on the highway. The amount of power they use fighting drag is out of proportion to how small they are.
Streamlined motorcycles like this are the only possible solution with current battery technology.
Not being catapulted around like a ragdoll in case of a crash is also a neato perk. I know several people with permanent debilitating injuries from motorcycle crashes.
The problem it solves that shouldn't exist is motorcycles. By inventing a two wheeled car, which is worse than a 4 wheeled one, but baby steps are steps too.
Well, it eliminates the centrifugal force that you have to fight in a regular car. There is even a Mercedes SUV that does this to a limited extent using active suspension, and reviews are quite positive.
It makes sense if you want to drive fast while cornering, true. But I've never experienced it as a problem with cars. Maybe if you're racing, that makes a real difference. A racing leage with bikes like these would be cool. Maybe make go all Tron/Akira style and hold the races at night, with neon lights and all that.
I don't know about individuals, but collectively, it would make much more sense for people who just need to move, like commuting with a bag, to be in this rather than in some multi ton empty car
My buddy owned a car lot that had an enclosed scooter, but without doors, sitting out back. We called it the Huyosung Nintendo because sitting in it felt like an arcade game, not a scooter. I can't even find a picture of another one, but imagine a scooter with a golf cart style windshield and wrap around roof to the seat subframe. Weird AF.
I don't know how you would do it, but I would just push the canopy up and crawl out. Laying on its side wouldn't block the canopy in most situations. The majority of the weight is on the bottom, so on flat ground it would rock back away from the canopy so that it isn't obstructed.
Man, seeing that I'd want to be wearing a helmet with a hans device in there - those neck motions looked painful. Still, it's a lot better than I imagined.
You’re correct, but I forgot to mention in the case I’m talking about there was an aftermarket mod to suicide doors and then the lambo flipped 180 and caught fire she could only crawl out the window
And suicide doors were called that cause you couldn't get out. It was the opposite actually, too easy to get out - they could catch the wind and fly open at speed and if you tried to grab the door you'd be going with it.
The wheels deploy automatically at walking pace. They are also blocked above a certain speed to avoid accidentally lowering then. At lean angles above 50° the inside wheel lowers a little to make contact with the ground to give the driver feedback in addition to an acoustic signal.
I had a 1h test drive in the electric version around 2012, it's a lot of fun as long as there aren't any hairpins to navigate, but that was probably due to my lack of experience with such a large imposing single track vehicle I was very wary of crashing.
But yah, the one thing that tells me there's no gyros on it is the fact that it's training wheels. If it actually had gyros, they wouldn't bother with wheels, and they'd just add an automatic kickstand.
You joke, but there's a video where someone puts it in a tight enough low speed circle to lay it down on the wheel, gets out, and then someone else drives it back upright.
I would be so scared sitting in the back of that 😂
Like idk if looks less manoeuvreable then a motor and less safe then a car. I don't see why you would prefer this type of transportation.
I wonder if it's allowed to carry a child in a car seat in it.
Even weirder: some Swiss guys converted a Monotracer to be fully electric. In 2011 they took part in a Zero Emissions Race and won by circumnavigating the planet in 80 days. It’s called Zerotracer
I don’t remember what show featured this, if it was of the “Top Gear” enterprise, or one of Jeremy Clarkson’s short run car shows. What’s impressive is the gear that pops down when you’re about to come to a stop.
Remind me of a Lit Motors prototype I saw in SF years ago. It had a gyro which allows you to go backwards. They hooked it up to a truck with a chain and tried to pull it over but the gyro kept it up.
The amount of people buying it wouldn't justify the cost of making it, compared to making it cheaply and selling it for a lot, so shareholder profits and CEO bonuses can skyrocket.
According to the plates, it's a PERAVES MONOTRACER from 2012, registered in The Netherlands in 2025. Catalogue price of €91K and roughly €12K in taxes.
Found this article about the Monotracer: https://archive.nytimes.com/wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/21/one-of-worlds-most-efficient-vehicles-unable-to-enter-u-s/
The gist is that it is an EV that is incredibly efficient. The article above (from 2013) says that it was part of a competition to create a vehicle that could go 100 miles on one charge. I didn't read the whole article so I don't know if it's that efficient.
What does it do at red lights? Watch the video again and you can see the random wheel on the side of the Monotracer. There's one on the other side as well. These wheels flip down to function like a training wheels on a bike. Here's a short video that shows what I mean. https://youtu.be/lqsDrb1yZc4?si=DoQu653TJC9GOWxu
I remember seeing this on a show in the very early 90s called “Beyond 2000” on the Discovery Channel. I thought it was cool then and I think it’s cool now.
Those are stabiliser wheels at the side, they deploy when the bike is stationary. IIRC,The 3 wheel Carver trike from NL was also expensive. To say nothing of their flying car..
It’ll never be perfect until it uses a net negative energy, is roomy, is comfortable, is beautiful, emits gold bars, and costs negative money. Even then there will be plenty to complain about.

Oh good. I was confused by the wheels in the OP pic. I thought maybe they were like extreme sliders. This makes more sense.

Thank you. That was my question.
tekaxon@reddit
The tradeoff of total enclosure at the feet doesn't seem worth it to me, maybe some sort of flap that you can open by shoving your feet through or something along those lines would be better.
This is a great example of added design requirements being to the detriment of others.

makerspark@reddit
I agree that it's not a good value, but as I recall, they were very fast (used a BMW k motor). At autobahn speeds they were way better on fuel than a motorcycle, so I think that was their "thing”. If you've spent any time on the autobahn at speed, you'll know how fast you go through fuel at those speeds, it's pretty depressing!
Oli4K@reddit
And the gas stations are very far apart on the autobahn.
Memento_Vivere8@reddit
What? There's a gas station usually every 30 km +/-10. You'll certainly never have the problem of not making it from one to another before running out of fuel.
Oli4K@reddit
Even then you won’t make it to the next gas station at top speed on some bikes.
Memento_Vivere8@reddit
Can you name one of these bikes? With a relatively small 15 liter tank you'd need to use 30 liter per km to run out of gas in 50 km. The highest gas usage I could find for bikes is still less than 15 l/km.
Oli4K@reddit
Knew a guy a while ago who had a tuned Kawasaki liter bike that would do 2 km per liter at ~ 300 kmh. He was kinda disappointed after making all sorts of mods and finding out there was no where he could actually use it.
GeniusLike4207@reddit
I checked the website, and there's only the electric version available. But holy shit. 250kph top speed (electronically limited) and just a 7.5kWh per 100km is pretty impressive.
Shame the battery is tiny (28.5kwh) and no fast charging.
ArScrap@reddit
My knee-jerk reaction is that it's lame that they have to have electronic speed limit. Then after a second of just thinking about it, 250kph is already irresponsibly fast for a street legal bike, it's kind of cool that they can get away with putting the limit that high
GeniusLike4207@reddit
250 is insanely fast. That's faster than most motorcycles and extremely fast for an electric vehicle
AltrntivInDoomWorld@reddit
400 km range is tiny?
It's what most of ICE cars do.
_aperture_labs_@reddit
All ICE cars I've been in can get upwards of 500km range, depending on how fuel efficient you drive.
My '96 BMW 520i could go 1000km if I really pushed it on a 75L tank.
AltrntivInDoomWorld@reddit
75l was an extra option on BMW 520i in 96.
_aperture_labs_@reddit
I was in fact mostly driving on highways, that's where I got better fuel economy than in cities.
Good to know about the 75L tank being an extra option though.
3amGreenCoffee@reddit
Kilometers is not a measure of battery size. The battery is tiny, but so is the vehicle, so it doesn't really matter because it provides sufficient range.
IlluminatedPickle@reddit
That's a lot more than most ICE bikes get in range afaik.
I think the average is like, 300ish-km?
fairysimile@reddit
Bruh that battery is bigger than my old car's battery (27.4kwh). That was on a 970kg car, about 10-12 kwh per 100km, 16-18 in winter.
resistBat@reddit
Aptera are claiming that their solar EV can do 6.2 kWh per 100 km and that has too seats, but I guess we'll have to wait to see how that works out in practice.
hates_stupid_people@reddit
You can add another 10kWh with an extended range pack. Which makes it comparable to electric cars.
Zephyrical16@reddit
Level 1 vs level 2 charging basically by the sounds of it from an American 120V standpoint. My PHEV with a 15.5kWh battery takes about 10-11 hours to charge at Level 1, and 2.5 hours at Level 2.
resistBat@reddit
Level 1 doesn't really exist in europe because everything is 230v anyway. There are "granny chargers" that plug into a regular socket and deliver 3 kW, which is still double what level 1 would be in the US.
hates_stupid_people@reddit
It's also not uncommon for European houses to have three phase power plugs for old water heaters or ovens. So they can tap directly into those lines for home charging.
hates_stupid_people@reddit
Yeah, based on the specs it seems to come with a charging cable that can do 380V/32A. Which seems to fit "level 2" charging.
Iron-Lotus@reddit
That is not a tiny battery
Fli_fo@reddit

I don't know. Looks like solving a problem that does not exist.
Folly_Polymath@reddit
Yeah, it removes all the agility for a concept that is more taxing on the motor. Think about it... Would you want a solution like this on a commuter bike?
expera@reddit
Enter rain…
gahidus@reddit
I don't know if this thing has air conditioning or not, but it certainly solves the problem of being exposed to the elements while riding a motorcycle. It also solves the problem of needing to wear a special suit of motorcycle armor while riding a motorcycle. You could ride this to work in your work clothes and not need to change. If it still keeps the fuel efficiency of a motorcycle, which it probably improves on with aerodynamics, then it's actually solving lots of known problems.
As for the aesthetics, if you think it looks cool, then that's another bonus. If you don't, then it's not the vehicle for you.
nonfading@reddit
I see it as a weird alternative to Smart or other small car. You go on motorcycle to feel open air and road, there is a whole philosophy about it. If it does not fit you, why not to go a small car with sunroof instead, because this look a hybrid no one asked for.
RasilBathbone@reddit

So, you don't understand what words mean and how language works. "Read what I meant, not what I wrote" is never a valid position.
nonfading@reddit

RasilBathbone@reddit

It's probably because you said "no one asked for." Idc, just pointing out that you did not speak for yourself in saying that
RasilBathbone@reddit
It was the why anybody rides claim, but the "no one asked for" fits too. I've been riding for more than 45 years, and exposure to the elements is the part I like least about it. The polar opposite of why I do it.

Also quite a lot safer - how many people could crash a motorcycle while not wearing a helmet or any protective gear... and simply get out and walk away?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=es0y0y4cIrg
The_R4ke@reddit
I mean falling off a motorcycle is definitely a problem. I would love to see the safety comparisons.
neophlegm@reddit
I'm curious about this coz on the one hand I'd expect lower injuries from falls but on the other in a severe collision you might be better off flying off your bike instead of being trapped inside a container without a helmet and turned to paté
Sudden-Purchase-8371@reddit
Oh look it's the "trapped and burned alive" anti seat belt argument remixed.
igetdownvotedalot@reddit
Look up the old BMW C1. Similar concept with open sides.
Pros are you don’t need a helmet and it’s safer in an accident. Also AC/heating/radio works better.
Cons are they look like this.

GarThor_TMK@reddit
I don't think that's a con, but I've often been told I have bad opinions... so... 🤷
StoicJ@reddit
right? if it wasn't so expensive I would 100% have one. not just for the fuel efficiency or whatever, but because it looks like a ton of fun.
Going around a winding road and rolling with the turns while in something closer to a plane cockpit than a car would be great.
DenizSaintJuke@reddit
This looks cool as fuck. It's the type of stuff video games and science fiction movies in the 90s dreamt of.
Frankie_T9000@reddit
I dont think it looks cool at all. However I reckon you could make some that really look cool
DenizSaintJuke@reddit
One can't argue about taste. I'd prefer a different colour scheme that looks less like a sports bicyclists outfit, but I like the contraption. Not sure if its utility is improved over a motorcycle, which already has a bare minimum of utility value in most contexts.
Frankie_T9000@reddit
utility would be air con and better protection (though still no crumple zones and would be very nasty in a accident with a solid vehicle or if losing control wont slide off
DenizSaintJuke@reddit
Safety and weather protection were my bets too. But it still doesn't greatly improve the utility of it. You now have a more comfortable and safer mode of driving around alone with no way of carrying anything. Now, if it turned out to have more space for passengers or cargo, it would improve on motorbikes.
Jedirictus@reddit
Its like a Light Cycle from the original Tron. I'd buy the hell out of one of these and repaint it properly.
GigaChadRedPill@reddit
My first thought exactly. I’d just give it a white/black paint job to match the old Light Cycle from the sequel
DenizSaintJuke@reddit
Born in the 90s, the Nod Mod unit from Command and Conquer is my first association (black and red painted). Amime kids will probably think of Akira. Tron is a good call. I hadn't thought of that.
This thing must be a wet dream for a whole bunch of 80s and 90s kids.

Clear-Bee4118@reddit
The energy used to push a vehicle through air goes up exponentially, it’s why you can find videos of men in their late 60s riding velomobiles at highway speeds, and this is even more aero than just riding a motorcycle.
Plus all of the benefits listed above.
I kinda like it. 🤷🏼♂️
MikeHeu@reddit (OP)
I’ve owned a Velomobiel Quest for years. It was always fun passing by groups of bikers in spandex when casually cruising at 45 km/h going to work.
Nekileo@reddit
cons, you wouldn't look like this
nonfading@reddit
Lmao, Con is epic and on point.
Emperor-Commodus@reddit
The problem with motorcycles is that they're very aerodynamically inefficient. This makes their highway range terrible, which is a big problem for electric motorcycles. IIRC the top spec Zero motorcycle is a 150lb motorcycle with a 350lb battery and still gets less than 100mi of range on the highway. The amount of power they use fighting drag is out of proportion to how small they are.
Streamlined motorcycles like this are the only possible solution with current battery technology.
DenizSaintJuke@reddit
Rain and cold does exist in some places.
Not being catapulted around like a ragdoll in case of a crash is also a neato perk. I know several people with permanent debilitating injuries from motorcycle crashes.
The problem it solves that shouldn't exist is motorcycles. By inventing a two wheeled car, which is worse than a 4 wheeled one, but baby steps are steps too.
great_escape_fleur@reddit
One benefit of a two-wheeled car is banking while cornering.
DenizSaintJuke@reddit
Okay. And why?
great_escape_fleur@reddit
Well, it eliminates the centrifugal force that you have to fight in a regular car. There is even a Mercedes SUV that does this to a limited extent using active suspension, and reviews are quite positive.
DenizSaintJuke@reddit
It makes sense if you want to drive fast while cornering, true. But I've never experienced it as a problem with cars. Maybe if you're racing, that makes a real difference. A racing leage with bikes like these would be cool. Maybe make go all Tron/Akira style and hold the races at night, with neon lights and all that.
stq66@reddit

MilmoWK@reddit
ok, now how do you get out when it's laying on its side due to some accident?
3amGreenCoffee@reddit
I don't know how you would do it, but I would just push the canopy up and crawl out. Laying on its side wouldn't block the canopy in most situations. The majority of the weight is on the bottom, so on flat ground it would rock back away from the canopy so that it isn't obstructed.
dgkimpton@reddit
Man, seeing that I'd want to be wearing a helmet with a hans device in there - those neck motions looked painful. Still, it's a lot better than I imagined.
MilmoWK@reddit
Ah, so the little side wheels hold it up just enough when stowed to allow the canopy to open. That’s good.
ShrimpCrackers@reddit
Haha that's the thing, you don't.
A model burned to death in a lambo with suicide doors.
Synectics@reddit

lostcosmonaut307@reddit
Lamborghini doors are scissor doors (pivot upward at the front) not suicide doors (pivot sideways from the rear, opposite of a normal door).
ShrimpCrackers@reddit
You’re correct, but I forgot to mention in the case I’m talking about there was an aftermarket mod to suicide doors and then the lambo flipped 180 and caught fire she could only crawl out the window
q0vneob@reddit
*scissor doors.
And suicide doors were called that cause you couldn't get out. It was the opposite actually, too easy to get out - they could catch the wind and fly open at speed and if you tried to grab the door you'd be going with it.
Kotukunui@reddit
Not sure about this machine, but aeroplanes with a canopy quite often have a pull cord or lever which pops the hinge pins to release it.
KathyJaneway@reddit
If you're tipped and on the left side,I don't think that would help, cause it still needs room to open up .
RecentRegal@reddit
It doesn’t pop the latch, it pops the hinges. So neither side is connected.
Kotukunui@reddit
Pop the hinges and just push it “up” with no need for it to pivot at all.

Nickf090@reddit

chromopila@reddit
The wheels deploy automatically at walking pace. They are also blocked above a certain speed to avoid accidentally lowering then. At lean angles above 50° the inside wheel lowers a little to make contact with the ground to give the driver feedback in addition to an acoustic signal.
I had a 1h test drive in the electric version around 2012, it's a lot of fun as long as there aren't any hairpins to navigate, but that was probably due to my lack of experience with such a large imposing single track vehicle I was very wary of crashing.
GarThor_TMK@reddit
That's rad AF you got to drive one! :D
But yah, the one thing that tells me there's no gyros on it is the fact that it's training wheels. If it actually had gyros, they wouldn't bother with wheels, and they'd just add an automatic kickstand.
logunleonov@reddit
Yep
ClassroomStrict912@reddit

kindafunnymostlysad@reddit
Those deploy like aircraft landing gear to keep it upright when it stops. There are photos in this thread.
They also touch the ground during extreme turns to let the driver know they are at the limit on lean angle.

Thanks :)

Two.
SnooComics8268@reddit
I would be so scared sitting in the back of that 😂 Like idk if looks less manoeuvreable then a motor and less safe then a car. I don't see why you would prefer this type of transportation.
I wonder if it's allowed to carry a child in a car seat in it.

Just curious. Why the single wheel on each side, up at the Beltline?
3amGreenCoffee@reddit
Away-Description-786@reddit
Why…?!?! You can’t use it like a bike to ride between cars. You don’t have the space like a car.
What’s to profit of this design vs a bike or car?
3amGreenCoffee@reddit
The point is extreme efficiency.
zillskillnillfrill@reddit
What happens when you have to stop at a set of lights?
3amGreenCoffee@reddit
kindafunnymostlysad@reddit
The little wheels on the side automatically deploy at low speeds like training wheels. Scroll through the comments, someone posted pics.
costafilh0@reddit
Terrible idea, except for low speed city driving.
3amGreenCoffee@reddit
Low speed city driving is where it would be at its worst. It's designed for highway driving.
knowledgeable_diablo@reddit
How the hell do you pull up at the lights? Or keep it upright when stationary?
3amGreenCoffee@reddit
It has landing gear that automatically deploy as you approach a stop and automatically retract when you're going fast enough to remain upright.
birgor@reddit
The two small wheels behind the coupé is deployed like a landing gear at low speeds. There are pictures of it in the thread.
knowledgeable_diablo@reddit
Ahh yes. Still wouldn’t wannabe relying on these when you’re looking for a real quick bit of stabilisation in a hurry.
birgor@reddit
Neither should your legs ever be, you should probably not ride this vehicle without any previous mc experience.
This solution is quite common on handicap conversations of regular bikes as well, I have never heard about them being dangerous.
Miserable-Assistant3@reddit
Even weirder: some Swiss guys converted a Monotracer to be fully electric. In 2011 they took part in a Zero Emissions Race and won by circumnavigating the planet in 80 days. It’s called Zerotracer
3amGreenCoffee@reddit
All of them are electric now. The company stopped producing the BMW gasoline version in 2016.
WhiskyPops@reddit
I'd add another two wheels for safety, and perhaps call it something else.

I don’t remember what show featured this, if it was of the “Top Gear” enterprise, or one of Jeremy Clarkson’s short run car shows. What’s impressive is the gear that pops down when you’re about to come to a stop.

The amount of people buying it wouldn't justify the cost of making it, compared to making it cheaply and selling it for a lot, so shareholder profits and CEO bonuses can skyrocket.

Also wide tires on a motorcycle aren't usually a good thing
Nickf090@reddit
I mean, isn’t that what this post is showing in the first place? I don’t think people are lining up for that one either.

Imho the sidewheels are obsolete if there were really soft / lightweight hatches where you could put your legs through when needed.
