Which song did you play on repeat after a teenage breakup?

I want to know which song(s) did you listen to on repeat after a high school/young adult breakup, when everything felt so final if you were the one being dumped, or maybe happy if you were the one dumping the other. Let's hear it!

Michellenjon_2010@reddit
Lol they do!! That is just odd. To each his own I guess 🤣
CheesyRomantic@reddit
I know! Lol I personally know 2 ppl who used Love Bites as their wedding song.
I mean, I really like this song. Its a great emotional power ballad.
But odd for a wedding song. You're right though, to each their own.

SarahZona97@reddit
Dancing with Tears in my Eyes (early boyfriend breakup). I know it's about nuclear war/blast.
A guy sent me cool remix of an early 80s song after I broke up with him, and once I stopped dancing to it and listened to the lyrics, I felt really bad. I still love that remix. The song is Give Me Tonight by Shannon. The song is good; the remix is amazing if you like 80s dance music.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
Upvote for Ultravox and I get the "break up" feeling in the song, even though, as you clearly stated, it is about a nuclear blast.
SarahZona97@reddit
Thank you, I can't believe I forgot the "by Ultravox" in that post. Not enough people are aware of the genius of Midge Ure/Ultravox as it is, even in Gen X. As an American, I'd never even heard of them until my family moved to Berlin in the early 80s.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
I am an American too - quell surprise! - and got into Ultravox in 1982, after having heard them on a trip to Scotland in 1980. I have learned that the musical genius behind Ultravox AND Visage was Billy Currie. Midge has become influential over the years, not only for Ultravox, but his work with Bob Geldof for "Do They Know It's Christmas" and, obviously, Live Aid. Ultravox reigns supreme for me. :)
SarahZona97@reddit
Was it Visage who did Fade to Gray? I can't remember everything from 40+ years ago like I used to. And I've heard so many people (not Europeans) say they hate Do They Know It's Christmas because some of the lyrics are "problematic." Yeah, true, but it was 1984, and comparatively speaking, much of what the average person said without thinking was problematic by today's standards. But as far as the music goes, it's so much better than We Are The World. I'm just grateful I got to live Ina big European city for a while instead of staying in the U.S. and not know what I was missing. We, as Americans, missed out on a lot of good music of all types back then. That's not a problem now, but it was difficult to get radio play back then. Speaking of Scotland - where did you go? We went on a class trip from London - York - Edinburgh - Skye and back down. We stayed at one hostel in which the the girls stayed on the top floor and the boys the bottom floor. The cranky old caretaker yelled at the girls for hanging out with the boys until late in the evening. We probably wouldn't have IF the top floor HAD ANY HEAT. March in Scotland was cold! And Skye was lovely - so many hills, fuzzy sheep, and rocks! 😂
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
My grandparents were Scotch, came over to the USA in the 1950s. We stayed with my grandmother's sister and husband in Castlemilk, Glasgow for six weeks Shit, that was now nearly 46 years ago, back when I was 11 years old. We never got to Skye with its hills and sheep and rocks, but got to Leven to stay with friends.
The music being played on the radio - Radio Clyde 261 AM - blew me away. I heard "Sleepwalk", "Babooshka" {Kate Bush}, "Oh yeah (On the Radio)" {Roxy Music}, "Love Will Tear Us Apart", "Sanctury" {New Musik} and so many more. The day I left "Ashes to Ashes" was number One in the charts.
Came back home - crap on the radio. I didn't "find" that music until 1982 when I tuned into WBNY 91.3FM out of Buff State in Buffalo. And then CFNY 102.1FM out of Toronto. Golden years indeed.
Damn I was fortunate.
Shudder to We Are the World. FWIW "Fade to Gray" has become influential for some reason. I see it referenced many times. U2 managed to eke out "New Year's Day" by trying to copy the "Fade to Gray" chords.
Quick_Dark244@reddit
My cousin played -Rush, Rush -Paula Abdul She played it nonstop for a week . We decided to take the cassette outside and melt it with a magnifying glass then placing it on the window so she would think the sun did it.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
LOL. I had forgotten about that song, but as soon as I read your comment, it sprang to mind.
I have to ask - did your cousin ever figure out what REALLY happened to her beloved Paula Abdul cassette? Or did you keep that one to yourself?
Quick_Dark244@reddit
Moms made me do transplant surgery on it cause she knew I could. So I had to use a memorex cassette that I had some rap on open it up take out the tape and carefully open hers up cause store bought tapes don’t have screws . So I would put her two reels into the Memorex run the tape up to the felt head put the top back on and done. The magnifying glass really just warped the holes where the spinny things are so it wouldn’t fit in the player.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
Talk about skills! Thanks for the response! I bow down to you. Rush Rush indeed!

I just watched the video I forgot Keanu Reeves was in it. The song brought memories hated the song then but I liked hearing it today. I knew every fkn word too:)

Awesome dude, I hope he's still doing well.
MrsFrufra@reddit
Omg think we might have had the same first boyfriend - photographer, actor, and super serious artiste type with a Flock of Seagulls haircut and skinny jeans he had tailored to be the tightest in the land. Broke up with me because I wasn’t “wife material” (he also had a deep streak of Baptist youth group values in the mix) and I was devastated. Jackass. He always wanted to take nude photos of me but didn’t (see the above described internal conflict) and I really regret that he didn’t. I was gorgeous and would love to have them now.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
Whatever became of him?
MrsFrufra@reddit
He got a MFA in theater design or something. Married a good girl whose dad was well respected/connected and yada yada yada he’s an insurance executive last time I heard. I’ve been very happily married for 32 years - him breaking up with me was such a blessing in disguise.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
He did well for himself. In the end, everybody is where they should be. Usually a break up is a favor. It just doesn't feel like it at the time.

I never did this, like ever. I try to put shit in my rear view, not dwell on it. I have been told I have a very butch personality for a chick.
Temporary_Shirt_6236@reddit
Same, except I'm a guy. I was never one of those people to remain friends with an ex. Full and immediate no-contact was my way. It's just being realistic while moving forward, broken heart or no.

I remember for one particular guy that I broke up with but ended up regretting it later, I’d keep an ongoing list of songs in my journal that I’d add to when I heard an appropriate song. It was lengthy, as my regret went on for a few years. So, so many of these songs made that list. Thanks for asking this, and bringing these songs back!!
I think the one that made me cry the most was I Can’t Make You Love Me, Bonnie Raitt. Such a heartbreaking song.
