Is it worth upgrading from a Ryzen 9 5900X to a 5800X3D for an RTX 5080 at 3440x1440, or is it a waste of money?

Hey everyone, I’m currently thinking about upgrading my PC and I’m not sure if it’s worth it in my specific situation. Right now I’m running a Ryzen 9 5900X with an RTX 3070, 32GB of DDR4 3600 CL16, and I play on a 3440x1440 ultrawide monitor. My plan is to upgrade to an RTX 5080 when possible, since I want to play modern AAA games at Ultra settings with Ray Tracing or even Path Tracing when available, aiming for around 90 FPS with good 1% lows and smooth frametimes.
The thing is, I’ve been reading a lot about CPU bottlenecks and also about how much of a difference 3D V-Cache can make in games, and now I’m wondering if I should upgrade my CPU as well. I found a used Ryzen 7 5800X3D for about 370€ on Wallapop, and I’m considering it as a way to stay on AM4 and avoid the cost of moving to a new platform with DDR5 and a new motherboard.
My main question is whether in a setup like mine, playing at 3440x1440 with a high-end GPU like the RTX 5080, I would actually see a noticeable improvement not just in average FPS but especially in 1% lows and overall frame stability when going from a 5900X to a 5800X3D, or if the difference would be small enough that it’s not really worth the cost, considering that at higher resolutions the GPU usually becomes the limiting factor.
I’d really appreciate any insights, especially from people who have made a similar upgrade or tested X3D CPUs at ultrawide resolutions.

5800X3D is still one of the best in gaming according to charts.
bubbarowden@reddit
Yea it’s just not a good value is the problem. Gotta buy it used and it’s overpriced for old tech. If it was running $200 that’d be a completely different story, but it’s not.

I have the exact same rig and screen resolution and upgraded to an RTX 5070TI. Thought long about upgrading the CPU as well but decided to keep the 5900X for now. So far performance has been absolutely great and I don't see the need for a new CPU at all
Octaive@reddit
That's great, but the gap is rather huge. The 5070Ti has a lot to offer you're not seeing.
funky-l@reddit
My screen only has 75hz (long overdue for replacement...) so as long as I can comfortably hit that, I have no complaints
Octaive@reddit
That's fair and makes sense.

370€ for an am4 processor is insane, literally just get a 180€ 7600x and 200€ DDR5 premium.
It's a free am5 upgrade
SpiritedLoan9255@reddit
How good is 7600x for gaming on 3440x1440?
Octaive@reddit
Better than a 5800X3D on average.
SmoothVelvetSlav@reddit
dont spend good money after bad, am4 is dead, wait 6months or so for ram to crater and go am5
bubbarowden@reddit
I guess it kinda depends on how much you’re paying for 5800x3d? If around $400 you can just go 14600k + LGA 1700 board for $380. Or just make the jump to AM5 for about $500 if you’re near a micro center
SellsWhiteStuff@reddit
Do they really have mobo + 32gb ddr5 + like a 7600x for $500?
bubbarowden@reddit
Yea, 7700x even.

Jesus we're getting shafted in the UK.
LobL@reddit
Norway as well, 32 GB DDR5 alone is like $400 lol.
alecpu@reddit
No way dude, paying 370$ for an am4 processor is pointless, you can find something cheaper on am5 if you switch. If you can find cheap and used it's another thing, but i wouldn't spend that much

I’m running a 5800x3d and have a 5900x on the shelf. Trying to decide which one to sell. Haven’t had a chance to do much comparison. The 5900x scored higher in single core and way higher in multi core benchmarks. I run MSFS2024 a lot so I thought the 5800x3d would be much stronger but I’ve also read that 2024 is better at using multiple cores than 2020 was.
I really need to get around to do a proper comparison but I don’t know how to log FPS and 1% lows, etc.
Due_Permission4658@reddit
5800x3d is better for gaming only thing 5900x beats the X3d in is productivity
deTombe@reddit
Honestly I wouldn't both will struggle keeping up especially with ray Tracing. I would go for a completely new modern platform like a 14700K/F and a B760-P DDR4 reuse your memory. Even if you have to drop down to a 5070ti which is a better choice all around.
Beginning_Anxious@reddit
Z690 or Z790.

Unfortunately the only way to get DDR4 models is used or refurbished Amazon/Ebay. The only major difference is adjustment of the frequency. But quite frankly 14th generation doesn't really need it. Besides the fact you would need some pretty serious cooling to tame said OC. You just have to make sure you get a mid to high end B series board with 12-14 phases. Anything less would likely have inadequate VRM heatsink. That would be you Tomahawks, Tufs, Aorus Elites to name a few.
Beginning_Anxious@reddit
Nah man you can’t even raise the ring clock on most of the B series boards. Plenty of open box options on eBay. Like this is a steal bellow. Was helping a friend out with a 13600k and I couldn’t raise the clock past 5.1 and 4.5 ring even tho those things can easily hit 5.4 all core.

I was running a 14900kf and 4266mhz 16-16-16-28 on this board a few years ago it’s amazing. Defiantly worth taking the time to get a good Z series.

Just for context I'm using a 14600KF with a 4070 and have no issues running modern games at 1440P. My only limitation is VRAM for newer AAA titles Ultra detail settings. My son is using a 5700X3D and a 7700XT. He doesn't even come close in performance CPU intensive games. Granted my GPU is slightly better but as a whole.
deTombe@reddit
5800X3D is an excellent CPU I just worry when you start adding 50 series features like AI and path tracing will start to show its age.
Krradr@reddit
What are you talking about? Even 5090 with 9800x3d can’t maintain 60 fps in re9 with pt at 4k without dlss. I’m playing with 5800x3d & 4080 at 1440p without issues in any good optimized games. Btw rt implementation is very good in a few games only: c2077, Alan Wake 2, metro exodus, re9 and control imho.
deTombe@reddit
Just personal preference I guess if I'm getting a 5080 I want a decent CPU to fully utilize. I get that GPUs are now well beyond CPU capabilities.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is generally better for 1440p gaming than the 5900X, providing higher average FPS and improved 1% low performance due to its large 3D V-Cache. It acts as the peak gaming processor for the AM4 platform. However, the 5900X offers better productivity performance, making the 5800X3D the better choice exclusively for gaming. 5800X3D vs. 5900X for 1440p Gaming: Gaming Performance: The 5800X3D is roughly 31% faster on average across 100+ games compared to the 5900X. Even at 1440p, where games are more GPU-bound, the 5800X3D offers a performance advantage in many titles. 1% Lows & Smoothness: The 5800X3D is known for providing fewer stuttering issues, giving a smoother gameplay experience. When to pick 5900X: If you do heavy workstation tasks (streaming, video editing) in addition to gaming, the 5900X's 12 cores are superior to the 5800X3D's 8 cores.

Waste of money. Im on a 5080 and i recently upgraded from a 5900x to a 9800x3d and im seeing about 15% improvement in the games i play @ 1440p
dqtl74@reddit
I somewhat echo this sentiment. However the dips will be far less frequent (I came from a 5800X).
Alucard661@reddit
I have a 5080 with a 5900x and I’m getting 120fps on cinematic (Ultra) on crimson desert admittedly on 1440p
disgruntledempanada@reddit
I run race simulators in VR so YMMV, frame drops and stutter go from an annoyance in flat gaming to motion sickness in VR...
I did this exact move and the upgrade was massive with my 3090 at the time. Huge decrease in CPU frame times while being buttery smooth. No hitches or stutters like with the 5900X. I could push the graphics more with my increased headroom.
Def worth it if you can find one.
