Damaged? Its bloody face is gone!
CapableCollar@reddit
Silly to complain about the word "damaged" in aviation terms. You can take a plane that got burned in half and make it flyable again at least once. So things are damaged until someone else can decide if it will get picked over for parts and scrapped.
Beautiful_Bus_7847@reddit
Chinook of Theseus
Padgriffin@reddit
The RAF FrankenChinook ZA704 (rebuilt using the front of a captured Argentine CH-47C AE-520) already holds that title
Ok-Parfait-9856@reddit
This sub turned into a propaganda fest overnight, which sucks because this sub used to be interesting
Idontcareaforkarma@reddit
And the second someone says it’s a hull loss, someone’s going to all over it with various tools, grabbing various bits off it and thinking ‘ooh I needed one of those’ for some hangar queen.
322throwaway1@reddit
I need some spare bits for my recreational Boing 234 anyways.
cmwest3@reddit
We should use the approved FAA terms of aviation "accident" or "incident".
CapableCollar@reddit
That would definitely add to my amusement.
Nice-Community-2345@reddit
Yikes, I feel like “damaged” doesn’t quite do justice to what happened here.
No-Duhnning@reddit
Damaged is the new destroyed. Beyond totalled. Totally Obliterated.
WesternBlueRanger@reddit
Actually appears repairable.
The main bit of structural work needed is a new front section, and Boeing still produces the CH-47. It won't be cheap, but the airframe is definitely salvageable here.
Padgriffin@reddit
We’ve seen stuff like this before, the RAF grafted the front of an Argentine Chinook captured during the Falklands War (AE-520) onto ZA704, a RAF Chinook that was heavily damaged, and restored her to airworthy status.
Longjumping_Rule_560@reddit
Yeah, but totally obliterated ain’t totally destroyed. After all, the totally obliterated Iranians are still damaging US equipment.
collinsl02@reddit
It'll be fixable - the RAF "cut & shut" 2 chonooks together in the past to make one flyable aircraft.
No_Zucchini_2200@reddit
UK idea of repairable, repaired, and need to be replaced are different.
US signs a no right to repair on a lot of stuff.
Only the military industrial complex can repair a lot of stuff.
-This screen needs a new knob.
-No I’m sorry mister army repair guy. We’ve determined you need a whole new screen. Our tech will be out in the next couple of weeks to replace it for you.
Recoil42@reddit
A few rolls of speedtape oughta do it.
unknown-again-p@reddit
Do you by any chance work for boieng?

😂😂😂
Sterling_____Archer@reddit
Ahem, the official term is “quicky sticky”
Front_State6406@reddit
Its just the front that fell off
Cornishlee@reddit
Interested to know what country you are from as speed tape was the universal fix in the UK’s RAF as well. Truly international repair technique!

hookinitup@reddit
That still managed to fly out of iran and back to kuwait? They built things different back in the day!
krodders@reddit
Let's just say that this level of damage is not compatible with powered flight
If this happened during flight, there'd just be a debris field
This was a ground strike
7ddlysuns@reddit
That didn’t fly
hookinitup@reddit
Oh it was on the ground. The second part of my statement still stands though. Some of our kit from the 70s/80s/90s was indestructible
ResortMain780@reddit
The A-10 supposedly was. Turns out its not. One shot down, one crashlanded with an engine killed. Thats not shocking per se, except for the fact both were almost certainly hit by a Majid short range IR rocket meant against drones and cruise missiles. These have a tiny warhead. The F35 was hit by that too, but managed to limp home. Makes you wonder.
NOVAbuddy@reddit
I can’t believe it flew either, but the article says “and a second search-and-rescue helicopter were struck but were able to escape”
That don’t make no sense based on the debris and the rotor blade condition. They last 0 seconds flying with this damage. Maybe they landed hard? Maybe on fire and rotor blade broke after ground fire? Wild
Ok-Prior2321@reddit
If by flew you mean gravity assisted flight to the nearest landing pad (the ground) then yeah, it totally flew 😂
bobbymcpresscot@reddit
I mean just like that AWACS the tail just fell off, and the radar dish is just gone... "damaged"
only cool 700 mil to replace

In the spirit of converting an old beetle with a kit car, and the only thing that remained was strut with the chassis number. Yes, then this Chinook is only damaged.
Tattered_Reason@reddit
Destroyed is a type of damaged.
sokratesz@reddit
If russian media did this, a bunch of people would be screaming cope, but it's not bad when our side does it, right?
JohnnyC300@reddit
Yep. The Venn diagram of "destroyed" is fully contained within that of "damaged"
DojatokeSC@reddit
Hey! They can probably salvage the rear rotor blade and the cargo door out of it.
Valspared1@reddit
Possible the aft head, vertical shaft, c-box, engines, engine xmsn's, maybe some drive shafts, hydraulic reservoirs, actuators, fuel tanks, APU, accumulator, generators, gear/wheels, cargo hooks, hatch, flooring, aft pylon and probably a few other ancilliary things.
The LAR will have to make that decision

I love the term “damaged” they applied to the E-3 and now this.
Just say destroyed.
Zh25_5680@reddit
The media keeps going with “damaged” or “crashed” instead of “destroyed” and “shot down”
Getting old quick
Navynuke00@reddit
Probably because that's the language they're getting from the Pentagon, with thinly veiled threats that if they want to keep their access to DOD, they'll use the official language provided without straying away from it.
soulmechh@reddit
Sounds like a banana republic regime.
faustianredditor@reddit
TBF, it's also difficult to stray in the other direction with any amount of integrity. Especially on the count of crashed and shot down. Like, was that jet that crashed actually shot down? You won't know until the pentagon tells you or you find the fragmentation pattern. The other way would be easier: Did the shot down plane crash? Yeah. What else would it have done? Fly on forever? Land properly? Then it wasn't shot down.
Can't really blame the journalists here. I mean, if they find an expert (e.g. a FE veteran) who will go on record saying "yeah that's a write off", go for it. But beyond that I'd rather journalists don't speculate too much - they're far enough out of their depth as it is.
Martin8412@reddit
Hasn’t that always been the case? If you want access to the DoD, you need to make them look good. Loads of Hollywood movies involves the Air Force, Marines, Army etc. and if they want them to make equipment available for the movie, they have to make the armed forces look good.
Navynuke00@reddit
Not like this it hasn't.

pup5581@reddit
It's propaganda for the war.
Dragon6172@reddit
Possibly repairable. The older design CH-46 fuselage consisted of three main pieces (cockpit, cabin, and aft fuselage/pylon) that had structural splices holding them together. We actually had an aircraft in one of my squadrons that was made up of three different wrecked aircraft. So, these pics the damage looks limited to the cockpit section, so if the design is similar then they could splice a cockpit section on and it would be good to go.
But....CH-47s are still in production. So probably will just write this one off and replace it
ResortMain780@reddit
Yeah my friends car wreck after being t-boned by a freight train is also repairable, we just need to find another car thats intact but with 2 wheels or a left rear view mirror missing, and then we can smash them together and its like nothing ever happened!
GogoDogoLogo@reddit
with as much money as the defense department wastes, exceptionally unlikely even if possible.
an-invisible-hand@reddit
Nobody's repairing that thing lol
SirFister13F@reddit
Replace it with a new airframe? Eh, maaaaaaaaybe. Hold off on retiring the oldest flying airframe and transfer a bunch around to fill that gap? Way more likely.
LonelySwinger@reddit

cuntbag0315@reddit
I agree with you, but when that gets back to the states its flying again. But yes I would consider this out of commission for this conflict.
superphotonerd@reddit
dude that shit is written off lol look at it
Hot_Television_7087@reddit
Anything can be rebuild if you are willing to spend enough, whether this thing flies again depends more on the egos of decision makers then reason
EverGivin@reddit
It’s ok to admit that an American helicopter got fucked up.
Hot_Television_7087@reddit
Well obviously the helicopter is fucked up. That's why whether it flies again depends on the egos of decision makers. If they care about dollars it will be written off. If they care about making some technical claim that no aircraft were lost, they will fix it.
Adventurous_Pay_5827@reddit
but think about the exceptionalism ...
faustianredditor@reddit
There's a pretty clear and crisp line between destroyed and damaged: What costs more? Seeling it for scrap and buying it used in comparable condition, or restore to previous condition? Chinooks are still in production, so the math isn't even terribly difficult if you've got access to the books.
"You could rebuild it if you are willing to spend enough" is basically always true. But does the wreck you're dealing with help you at all in rebuilding it?
Rodot@reddit
Yes, you could theoretically melt it down and recover some metal that could be reforged into a new control stick for a new helicopter, technically, if you had the money to do it
sokratesz@reddit
If Russian media did this, a bunch of people would be screaming cope, but it's not bad when our side does it :)

I thought we won in the first 24 hours… have I been lied to!?!?
FailedToRemit@reddit
Do you really want to see the score tallies here?
What a stupid comment.
johnnyribcage@reddit
Pathetic. You and your dear leader are going to get every last one of us killed. Hope it’s worth it.
FailedToRemit@reddit
Sure. Keep siding with the country that just killed 30,000 protestors.
JamesConsonants@reddit
Sure, keep siding with the country that landed two missiles on 150 school children. That part of American culture should stay firmly within your own borders
FailedToRemit@reddit
4,000 French civilians died on D-day. Are you going to whine about that?
JamesConsonants@reddit
No, because they’re not children.
FailedToRemit@reddit
You think French children didn’t die on D-day?
And the school wasn’t targeted.
Maybe ask yourself why Iranians put a school in a military compound and then allowed kids to go there knowing they were going to be attacked.
JamesConsonants@reddit
I’m certain they did, and if you wanna invite the (warranted) comparison between the Third Reich and your soon-to-be- dictatorship, you can go right ahead - no one outside of your borders will disagree with you.
The school not being targeted is worse, it proves what the rest of the world (or at least anyone who has deployed alongside the US military) has known for a while: the American military is incompetent, undertrained and ineffective, buoyed only by the vast logistics and intelligence networks you established in allied countries that you’re destroying in real time with hubris.
I know that raping and abusing children is now canonically a cultural tenet of elite American society, but you must understand that it’s not for other, more civilized nations. If your response to your country’s killing of 150 innocent children is anything other than wanting to hold the commanders responsible, then we have nothing to talk about.
FailedToRemit@reddit
You are just incredibly delusional. Why don’t you live in Iran?
You keep ignoring that they just killed 30,000 people and allow you to marry 9 year olds.
JamesConsonants@reddit
In the past 30 years, your government has killed 250,000 civilians in the Middle East as a result of a lie told by your government that your people were very eager to accept with no critical thought whatsoever. Since 2001, 900,000+ Americans have been killed as a result of gun violence based on policy largely propped up through foreign investment in your PACs.
Your military shot down an Iranian passenger jet in 1988 due to pure incompetence on behalf of the SWC on the USS Vincennes.
Since 2026 started, 2 American citizens have been murdered in broad daylight by your border patrol for protesting unconstitutional actions that have been sanctioned by your child abuser in chief, while 16 others have died while in ICE custody.
34 US states allow child marriage, 4 of which have no minimum age requirement. Of those 34 states, 33 (including the 4 that have no minimum marriage age) allow marriage as a valid defence against statutory rape laws.
The USA and Iran have about the same moral high ground to stand on: none.
FailedToRemit@reddit
Again, do you really want to see the whole score tallied out?
JamesConsonants@reddit
What score? The huge public L’s you’ve taken?
FailedToRemit@reddit
I bet you think the Washington Generals stand a chance against the Globetrotters.
JamesConsonants@reddit
I bet you still think you’re the globetrotters lol
johnnyribcage@reddit
You’ve got to be fucking joking. You’re finished pal. Enjoy your block.
C-SWhiskey@reddit
Do you understand the concept of "won"?
FailedToRemit@reddit
When a team is up 10000:1 do you think that means they lost because the other team scored?
Imaginary-Suspect959@reddit
No one is saying Iran is up but the regime is still in the game, being up 10000 to 1 only matters if victory is secured once you get to, idk, 10100, if you need to get to 10,000,000 to win but the opposition only needs to get to 10, it starts to look a little different.
C-SWhiskey@reddit
Remind me again what a point is in this game. Then we can talk about this 10000:1 number you pulled out of your ass.
And no. It means the game is still on and nobody has won.
A_CC@reddit
U win based on ur goal. Not tallies. Our goal is to wat exactly ? Their goal is to survive. So far they’ve taken more control than they had back in February and are still surviving and causing damage.
ketchup1345@reddit
Something tells me that it is impossible to win in the middle east. Always an uprising somewhere.
chumbucketandfries@reddit
It's possible, but would require an immediate game plan change. Get Ukraine involved and use their knowhow to mass produce attack drones. Fight fire with fire. Low cost and highly effective.
StinkyHoboTaint@reddit
You need to deal with China for that, and I don't know how much they want to help the US re tool it's military before the invasion of tiawan.
etheran123@reddit
But even if we controlled the government, the region has been very resistant to foreign control. I know its a seperate country so I dont know how it would go for Iran but look at afghanistan. We funded and practically controlled their government for nearly 20 years and yet we still lost it to the taliban almost immediately after giving up.
chumbucketandfries@reddit
Yes that's how you get and maintain control. Obviously once the money dries up, so does control. I don't think Trump wants to control Iran it's too difficult and would require more resources. No if he wants the government to open strait and turn over nuke tech, he will need drones.
ketchup1345@reddit
Funding doesn't mean control. Just look at the history of the middle east. Every large power that went there failed to maintain control. Doesn't matter how much money you have, someone will always be against you

ScaryFro@reddit
We call that destroyed but sure
Baron_VonLongSchlong@reddit
Load it on a trebuchet and launch it across the strait to Iran.
rocket_randall@reddit
Ime with regards to media parlance "damaged" is used when something is still recognizable, while "destroyed" is more often used when something can no longer be identified without forensics.
ScaryFro@reddit
That's fair. I guess I evaluate it more literally. Is that noted in the AP style guide or something?
Excellent-Gold1905@reddit
There is a similar situation with "sunk vs destroyed" for naval vessels. About half the Iranian navals vessels are technically "destroyed" while the other half are technically "sunk". For the vast majority of people the technical differences don't matter, that ship is no longer a thing that functions.
rocket_randall@reddit
Not that I know of. Just a general observation I have made from reading similar reporting.
Tangential_Diversion@reddit
I think you're onto something. I just randomly showed the pic to my family and asked what they thought. Most thought it was repairable, with many focusing specifically on the rotors. One said it doesn't look that bad and specifically referenced the damage on Kim Campbell's A10 (we're from the SF Bay and she's the daughter of the then-San Jose mayor, so that plane was everywhere on local news).
I think it's ultimately laymen not knowing which are the important bits and how much damage is realistically repairable for different parts.
sokratesz@reddit
Laymen won't, but god forbid journalists put some effort into their writings.
ScaryFro@reddit
If the frame that all of the components and engine mount to are unrepairable though wouldn't that be considered a destroyed airframe?
I could definitely see parts being reused and mounted on other airframes but are you suggesting that this airframe could be repaired?
It's basically salvage through my non A&P certified eyes. Curious.
Tangential_Diversion@reddit
Oh I'm purely reporting what non-aviation folks thinks. I'm the only plane nerd in my family*. /u/rocket_randall's comment had me curious about what people who know nothing about planes would notice in the pics and their deductions.
ScaryFro@reddit
Ah sorry then. No worries. Happy Easter.
LachoooDaOriginl@reddit
And id guess that disintegration would be when it cant be identified even with forensics
endeend8@reddit
This may seem weird but targeting helicopters is frankly waste of ammunition for them and good for US because that's one lesser valuable target that was hit. If you were the Iranians you should be targeting AWACs, Aerial refuelers, large fuel storage tanks, Patriot batteries, and anti-air guns like CIWS, in that order. Destroying a helicopter may seem like a win but in reality the US has thousands more sitting in a desert or tarmac somewhere and can be replaced quite quickly or simply have more built.

xpkranger@reddit
In my state you’d have to get it re-titled to a salvage title. Insurance is going to work differently on that. Generally costs more to insure and harder to get full coverage. So do the math on that before you decide to drive a totaled vehicle.
No-Duhnning@reddit
In my state, the body shop takes an estimate and you "buy" the vehicle back for 50 bucks. Nothing about the title or insurance changes, the latter might if youre at fault in the accident of course.
