How do you guys spend your unanticipated free time?

Let’s say work wrapped up early and the wife and kids are out of the house. Do you hop on one of many ongoing projects, or do you blow a blunt and kick it? Are you always productive, always busy, or can you enjoy downtime without guilt?
ONROSREPUS@reddit
projects, usually outside if the weather is nice. If you live in the country you know what I am talking about.
tanhauser_gates_@reddit
Get on my bike for a ride.
freisbill@reddit
make a huge list of to-dos', play a little online poker, kill some people in Forefront, then take a nap...
Apprehensive_Glove_1@reddit
I make grand plans for yard work, cleanup, building projects, etc...
Mostly though I just sleep.
Rough_Condition75@reddit
Yep!
AaronTheElite007@reddit
What the hell is free time?
kevtay1969@reddit
Either PS5 or crochet, because my wife doesn’t care. She’s happy I’m home!
Swimming-Compote-168@reddit
Just got into building technic sets. Very relaxing and gets my mind off things.
ChatamKay@reddit
Probably too much information but you asked. I generally enjoy free alone time masturbating.
chopper5150@reddit
(B) Blow a blunt and pop on the PS5. I’ve got plenty of time for taking care of projects. Give me some quiet time to recharge. Besides, the blunt usually pops a project idea into my mind anyway and that’s when I’ll get up and do it. I do admit there’s always a struggle with guilt of not keeping busy, but we all need our down time.

I'll let you know when I actually have some free time.
I don't see how y'all with kids manage.
FlippingPossum@reddit
Walking, reading, napping, gaming, quilting, puzzles, etc. Whatever I want.
Spacecakecookie@reddit (OP)
Quilting! Awesome! Ever make a t-shirt quilt?
FlippingPossum@reddit
I made one in memory of a friend who passed away. I have a pile of my shirts to do one day. My projrct list is long and I go through quilting jags. Currently in a reading mood.

Visiting elderly folks ( they LOVE impromptu calls and drop ins, especially those who live alone)
As I age and miss our launched kids, the importance of the above becomes clearer to me
Cutaway2AZ@reddit
Go out in the garden or the workshop and find something interesting, probably have a beer, hang out with the cat.

Watch a movie that the fam would never want to see - like Cronenberg or Lynch. Listen to vinyl.
joelav@reddit
Long run or long bike ride

I was hoping I could find a brethren who can’t shake the need to always work. If there’s time to lean, there’s time to clean. The Protestant Work Ethic. Make hay while the sun is shining. The nest egg. The art project I put down when I had kids and never picked up. The lawn. The cracked baseboard in the basement bathroom. My phone and Reddit. It’s not that I can’t “relax,” it’s that I can’t feel like I deserve it. Anybody want to sidebar to say stuff like “I’ve worked or been in school for the last 38 years, I don’t know who I would be without that.”

I have just worked 9 hours and still have homework. I don’t have the energy for anything else at night.

I do not know of this free time thing you speak of

It’s a delicious feeling for sure. I kind of wander the house & do whatever appeals at the moment: neighborhood walk, bath, movie, reorganization project …

Unless my chronic medical issues are demanding extra rest, I'm usually busy in some form or another. I have a ton of hobbies, so I'm either working on one of those or I'm reading or doing research for my next book or helping someone else with something.
rpbm@reddit
Sleeping, here lately. Work is kicking my butt.
WrongwayFalcons@reddit
First, jerk off.
Then, whatever.
Spacecakecookie@reddit (OP)
Ha! Spank it while you got it!
Creepy_Barbar@reddit
I turn off all electronics and just sit. No noise, no TV, no phones.. The MAYBE 4x a year it happens are what get me through the 360+ other days. I work full time, also caring for my almost deaf aunt to who lives with me, mom with cancer and MIL. Today is one of those days, and I almost feel drunk with silence and rest...and also feel like I SHOULD be doing more....
Spacecakecookie@reddit (OP)
Bless you creepy barber…
Harmonica_Tollivar@reddit
I have no guilt about enjoying downtime. I work to live, not live to work. The only reason I have a job is to keep myself in books, cross stitch supplies, and an internet connection.
Ok-Lingonberry-8261@reddit
Stellaris or Assetto Corsa.
Abpoe77@reddit
Spent some time hanging a sun sail on the back porch. Chilling under the sail. Eating TV eating some more. Listening to music on vinyl. Making a dinner together about to head to bed
ave427@reddit
Reading with maybe spurts of housework (blasting music in the background). No guilt if I don’t even do the housework. I have an intense full time job, so when I get downtime I chill out.
rosesforthemonsters@reddit
Animal Crossing and napping.
Imverystupidgenx@reddit
Likely just watching a show I usually can’t with the family. I’m incredibly lazy. Beer would probably be involved.
theghostofcslewis@reddit
Boat stuff.
Sufficient_Stop8381@reddit
As little as possible. Watch tv, look at some naked adult cinema, spank the monkey, fall asleep.
Same-Inflation@reddit
If I have a book I read it.
CDubs_94@reddit
I wish....I think I hit that age now where I can't read more than 5 pages without falling asleep. Any book that I want to read...I'm forced to get the audiobook. Plus....for some reason I have to constantly go back and reread a page because I missed something important.....!
SGReject@reddit
Smoke some pot and doomscrolling.
OldHead1776@reddit
Guitars. I love completely butchering 80s metal riffs. I absolutely humiliate myself playing Van Halen stuff as well. Plus, shopping for new gear is the best way to procrastinate from practicing.
Lefthandedsp00n@reddit
Couple of bong hits and go play online.
NoCartographer3974@reddit
crochet.. while a bit high.. and watching bad tv.
I am slowly learning that I do not have to be busy all the time nor am I expected to be busy all the time. in fact my bf encourages me to chill out.

A never ending list of chores, yard work, projects, etc. I am the worst at putting stuff away after working around the house. So I spend oodles of time looking for tools!
Grand_Taste_8737@reddit
I walk the dog.
Deadhead_Historian@reddit
I went for a long bike ride this afternoon with my free time. Felt glorious.
GenX50PlusF@reddit
I might treat myself to a meal at a restaurant I like, even though dining out has become so expensive.
middlingachiever@reddit
I love doing this when I have time alone!
gmkrikey@reddit
Absolutely I have no guilt whatsoever about some me time. For decades now, I have made time for me in my schedule to do whatever I want.
All work and no play is a bad thing. You wake up one day and life has passed you by.

Wine. Repeat. 🤣

grateful_john@reddit
Why can’t you smoke a joint then hop on a project? They aren’t mutually exclusive.
strangedazey@reddit
Agreed. Weed and projects go together like peas and carrots 🥕
earinsound@reddit
my work schedule is the same every day so things never wrap up early but am out the door by 3:30 so…
i usually work on art, listen to music, read, cook, watch something (movie, youtube sub.) only i like, maybe go have a drink somewhere…..take a nap!!
UrsaMajor7th@reddit

A nice nap ,with a 50s B sci-fi movie playing in the background
Independent_Arm_4444@reddit
Honestly, however the current mood strikes me. I have ongoing projects, dogs to play with, gaming sessions and a next collection of quality herb to spice it all up. It is funny because the wife just texted she is taking the kid to a movie tonight (quality mother/son time). So I need to figure this out straight away myself.
Unspicy_Tuna@reddit
What free time?! LOL
Quick_Discipline_432@reddit
I watch the dirty stuff with the sound on. 🔊
Nervous-Rooster7760@reddit
With no spouse and kids grown (empty nesters) I do whatever the hell I feel like. My hit my run early if weather is nice, go for a walk, run and get supplies for dinner. Just depends.
I am loving the empty nest. See both kids regularly and they know they are always welcome to swing by even if I am not here but do not miss having the kid calendar rule my life!
refuzeto@reddit
I head out to the woods and pick mushrooms and walk my dog.
Rocklobsterbot@reddit
i can read, or do a puzzle, or games on line. Or go for a long walk.
