Fermented meatloaf. Fermented meatloaf.

To be clear, the meatloaf itself isn't fermented, it's that it has an ingredient called fermented fish.
the1stmeddlingmage@reddit
Fish meatloaf…
thelectricrain@reddit
I mean, it's pork and fish in a meatloaf shape. When you think about it, is it any weirder than surf & turf, or pork & shrimp dumplings ? Not really.
the1stmeddlingmage@reddit
For more people than you obviously expect, fish in a meat loaf, even if mixed in with pork, is a foreign and unexpected combination so yes very different than your examples 😉
thelectricrain@reddit
Personally I find the concept of eating steak with lobster way weirder than a fish and pork meatloaf. Pork and shrimp dumplings are kinda like tiny meatloaves in pasta, so it doesn't shock me.
YourDadThinksImCool_@reddit
I mean . . You're not mincing the steak and lobest together... That would be weird..
Sounds like a personal problem.
thelectricrain@reddit
Why is eating a mouthful of steak and then a mouthful of lobster not weird (also goes with steak with lobster sauce) but a meatloaf with pork and fish weird ? And what about pork and shrimp dumplings ? It's not consistent ! Either pork/beef with seafood is okay, or it's not.
YourDadThinksImCool_@reddit
I literally just explained...
Play stupid. Or maybe it's not an act, u/thelectricrain.
❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
thelectricrain@reddit
Why is it weird when they're together ? You haven't explained beyond "because it is."
YourDadThinksImCool_@reddit
I literally just explained...
It's not just you're eating them in the same bite.. minced together.. then fermented..
Stop playing dumb!
..Or maybe it's not an act, u/thelectricrain.
❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
the1stmeddlingmage@reddit
Some people are just too blatantly stupid to see anyone’s worldview than their own
YourDadThinksImCool_@reddit

the1stmeddlingmage@reddit
Oi, shit for brains, I was talking about u/thelectricrain not you, turn off your auto reply bot fucker
thelectricrain@reddit
Yeah, this discussion is pointless. You're barely more cognizant than a bot.
jadbronson@reddit (OP)
Okay I hear you and see you. This concept was kinda difficult for me at first but I was thinking, wouldn't a burger with fish be terrible? Salmon burgers are delicious. So yes. They can totally get down together.
YourDadThinksImCool_@reddit
Yes it is weirder.
There you go.
Gay_Void_Dropout@reddit
Yes lol
KineticKris@reddit
That does not make it any better.
thelectricrain@reddit
Of course it does. Worcestershire sauce is literally a fish-based fermented sauce and I've never heard anyone whine about it.
highesthouse@reddit
Yeah, but this is from a different culture and is different to my own culture’s food, so it must be strange and gross!
TheeJohnDunbar@reddit
No it’s because the thought of fish in meatloaf is nasty. Get offline
YourDadThinksImCool_@reddit
Exactly... Meatloaf is a very American term .. didn't even know other cultures ate something still called "Meatloaf" so it makes sense why an American would find a completely different version of it with seemingly random ingredients weird.
If it were fermented fish and pork dumplings.. we wouldn't bat an eye!
bustercaseysghost@reddit
And I put it in my meatloaf 🤔
thelectricrain@reddit
Fish sauce, worcestershire sauce or anchovy paste (depending on the recipe) is fucking amazing in meatballs or meatloaves ! Really ups the umami flavor profile.
bustercaseysghost@reddit
I had not thought of anchovy paste and I have a can of them handy. Thanks!
thelectricrain@reddit
I always have a tub of that in my fridge. It's also great in summer to make quick homemade caesar dressing.
KineticKris@reddit
Because 99% of people don’t know what washyoursister sauce is.
Sad_Hospital_2730@reddit
It takes a special person to know what's in Wimblybimbly sauce and still eat it.
canolafly@reddit
It's a favorite of Benadryl Cabbagepatch.
Capt_Gremerica@reddit
This comment is too damn good
TulpaPal@reddit
Where are you from that most people don't know worcestershire sauce? I don't think I know many adults that wouldn't
KineticKris@reddit
Phrasing I guess. I meant what it’s made out of/what’s in it.
TulpaPal@reddit
Not so much the phrasing as seeming not to know the name.
Tru3insanity@reddit
Dude its so good.
Gay_Void_Dropout@reddit
Cause a sauce for flavor is different than it being made mostly from the fermented fish lol. Are you joking? Yes they are very different.
thelectricrain@reddit
It's not "made mostly from the fermented fish". It has a lot of pork and eggs, and I suspect the fish isn't that pungent; I see it referred to on English language recipes as "ground brined fish" or something like that.
GarboseGooseberry@reddit
Surströmming is literally fermented fish, and I've heard a lot of people complaining about it.
thelectricrain@reddit
This just in, not all fermented fish are created equal.
SharkPicnic@reddit
Probably because it doesn't smell like stank ass fish.
Oh-Yah-You-Betcha@reddit
God I love rotten and decomposing fish sauce on everything, especially vermicelli noodles
Tasty_Lead_Paint@reddit
How could I make wine out of it? It’s not grapes it’s fish!
Walter_Padick@reddit
^giggle
TheGrandExquisitor@reddit
It actually does. Fermented fish sauce isn't fishy. It's just a ton of umami.
AdamBlaster007@reddit
So it's surströmming meatloaf?
Pass, but I'd try just a bite if given the opportunity.
thelectricrain@reddit
Not surströmming, no. I haven't tried it yet (planning on it thanks to this post !) but it sounds like the fish comes in glass jars and is more brined than really pungent.
ShakeSignal@reddit
This clarification does not make it sound better
ATG_19@reddit
MalodorousNutsack@reddit
That's too bad, I don't eat fish but I'd probably try fermented typical meatloaf

Not a great name, but it's excellent. Have some with rice
jadbronson@reddit (OP)
Maybe next time. This was brand new to me. And to anyone accusing me of culture shaming: kiss my ass. I poke fun at my own food all the time so piss off. It looks absolutely abhorrent. People are constantly looking for some reason to be offended and it's gotten old.
danfish_77@reddit
Meatloaf doesn't look great no matter who makes it lol, but hey! Looks can be deceiving
KobayashiWaifu@reddit
This is just cultural shaming, not shitty food porn.
Square-Body-790@reddit
as we all know, there are foods that belong to no culture and can be made fun of, which is why this sub exists. and as we all know as well, what people call cultural foods can unilaterally never be shitty.
thelectricrain@reddit
Sure, but this isn't as unappetizing as balut or those boiled lamb heads you see sometimes. It's, well, a meatloaf.
Square-Body-790@reddit
so some cultural foods are okay to make fun of and some aren’t then?
thelectricrain@reddit
I think there's a difference between "even within the culture itself it's a tough sell" and "ewww this flavor profile is arbitrarily weirdddd to my foreign palate that must be disgusting"
Square-Body-790@reddit
newsflash: people are allowed to think things look or sound gross. especially when it’s things they’ve never seen or heard of before. i’m sure even some people within the culture this is from think it’s gross, but god fucking forbid someone ever dislike something.
thelectricrain@reddit
Those people will always exist I suppose, but Mam chung is completely within the standard flavor profile of Vietnamese food and I've seen it referred to as a comfort food, so I highly doubt it's considered a "controversial" food in the same way as Casu marzu or natto in their own cultures.
Also, you've literally created your account to seethe about people being called out on the culture shaming of a normal-ass meatloaf, which is hilarious to me.
Square-Body-790@reddit
doesn’t disprove a lick of what i’ve said
i created my account like a year ago at least, try harder
thelectricrain@reddit
Lurking for a year to seethe over this is even funnier.
GeshtiannaSG@reddit
It’s the difference between “this flavour is different” and “this egg is staring at me”.
Square-Body-790@reddit
sounds like a poor fucking excuse
tiedsoda@reddit
Half the sub is people culture shaming
TBoopSquiggShorterly@reddit
This is a traditional Vietnamese recipe and is quite tasty. You still have time to delete this embarrassing post, OP.
jadbronson@reddit (OP)
No. I'm leaving it. This looks awful but I'll get it next time. This trip was all about balduk.
Otherwise, scroll on.
thebeatsandreptaur@reddit
This is like being weirded out at the concept of fish meatballs or something lmao. Like why are people acting shook that basic forms of putting meat together, such as in loaf form, are found in various areas of the world with various different meats and flavor profiles? This is goofy.
thelectricrain@reddit
It's Asian and has the word "fermented" so the picky eaters on this sub freak out at it.
thebeatsandreptaur@reddit
I'm not even going to blame this on picky eaters tbh, you can be a picky eater without being ignorant.

I'm very intrigued. I wish I lived in a town where this kind of stuff was available to try. It's so small and podunk where I live, I absolutely love the mountains and my house, but I hate the lack of culture
xergog@reddit
otherwise known as expired meatloaf.
DieselMan271@reddit
Idk what I'm looking at and it's my culture. Perhaps it's mislabeled?
After googling it, I remember what it is. The flavor is quite salty and pungent. At least the one my grandma made was. It contains fish, pork, and eggs. Must be eaten with plain white rice. Wash it down with Heineken. Brush your teeth or chew some mints before socializing.

Couple of people in this thread running defense as if "fermented meatloaf" isn't an objectively vile translation. Guys you're allowed to find the idea of something from another culture unappetizing lmao this isn't a serious sub
