Simon676@reddit
With steer-by-wire this will likely work quite well
The_Crazy_Swede@reddit
April fools was a couple days ago, no need for the joke wheel anymore!
Fearless_Neat_6654@reddit (OP)
Mercedes looked at Tesla's Yoke and thought; hey that looks like fun
Mercedes is easily in the top 3 most cringe automakers currently
lordtema@reddit
Mercedes uses Steer by Wire though, the problem with the Tesla yoke is that they just changed the form factor of the steering wheel and did nothing else, a yoke will obviously not work in that regard.
ScienceMechEng_Lover@reddit
Does the Cybertruck not have steer-by-wire? Either way, I'd still be concerned about latency and steering feedback.
Kaiathebluenose@reddit
The Cybertruck drives amazing because of it
ComoEstanBitches@reddit
People can down vote but it does make driving much better at turning bc of the steer by wire. Turn radius on Teslas are frustratingly weak but the steer by wire addresses that even if it takes a bit to getting used to (like all things new)
CantThinkOfAnyName@reddit
Can you elaborate on why this addresses the turning radius? It won't decrease it since that's a physical limitation, do you mean that it creates an illusion?
ComoEstanBitches@reddit
The rear wheel is independent but works in concert with the front wheel upon turning
FastBlueAnt@reddit
The cybertruck has a steer by wire and and a non-circular steering wheel
mr_beanoz@reddit
It looks like a less extreme version of AMG GT3's steering wheel.
SussySpecs@reddit
Yeah Tesla has convinced manufacturers to do the most ridiculous unnecessary things like the yoke and glovebox controls in the screen.
ThatGuyFromCanadia@reddit
Wonder how long this yoke will last before it’s cancelled just like the Tesla yoke was
Chrodesk@reddit
kinda sad, obviously copying the worst part of tesla... didnt see mercedes as a blind follower.
Lauzz91@reddit
heheh
04limited@reddit
Mercedes had brake-by-wire on the SLR McLaren
Those systems had a hydraulic failsafe. I would assume they have some sort of fail safe on this steering system too
Chrodesk@reddit
its not the steer by wire that bothers me. its the yoke.
vtGaem@reddit
What's the problem with the yoke? If the SbW does it's job, you will never need to turn the wheel more than ~110°, meaning you never have to readjust your grip in the first place.
Chrodesk@reddit
no where to rest your hand at noon or 6. realize thats not "how to drive", but thats how most humans cruise down a road.
xstreamReddit@reddit
The whole point is the steer by wire system. The yoke is just a side note.
Fearless_Neat_6654@reddit (OP)
It's been a long time since Mercedes has done anything innovative tbh
ScienceMechEng_Lover@reddit
Hey, they put a 4-cylinder in a C63. Now that's innovation.
bauhausy@reddit
Eh, the first performance “C-Class” (the 190-E Cosworth) also had a 4-cylinder. It only became V8-powered in 1997 with the C43.
Not saying it was a good decision, after 25 years being V8-powered, but it was done before
BlueWingedTiger@reddit
I think the issue is calling it a 63, the badge loses meaning and people expect a V8, doing some naming to pull that cosworth history and make the car closer to that would’ve probably been more successful
SomeJayForToday@reddit
They did popularize tacky strip club lighting on the inside of cars.
makina323@reddit
Well they are known for catering to their main customer demographics pretty hard
Simon_787@reddit
That's not the worst part of Tesla though.
The worst part is a Yoke without steer by wire and touch buttons for indicators, especially when you sell it in countries with lots of roundabouts.
costafilh0@reddit
Fvcks given: 0
aprtur@reddit
Interesting on the steer by wire bit - they could have learned a thing or two from Infiniti with how badly customers hated that setup in the Q50 (direct adaptive steering option on those cars), but at least on those cars, it was something you could opt out of by avoiding certain packages.
leTrull@reddit
It's still an option on the EQS for 2500€.
aprtur@reddit
This article is not so clear - they're talking about this new system being the defacto setup whenever the refresh is done, and haven't said if it's optional or not.
leTrull@reddit
It seems like the author just didn't know at the time of writing this article. At least in germany/europe it's optional for 2500€. I don't think it's likely they're going to force other markets into steer by wire.
lordtema@reddit
I dont hate it tbh. The thing to keep in mind is that unlike Tesla, they are not just putting a yoke instead of a steering wheel and calling it a day.
Fearless_Neat_6654@reddit (OP)
Honestly, I think MB is just trying to save money.
MB is probably one of the greediest automakers, and they'll probably save a few cents per unit by making yolks instead of wheels.
lordtema@reddit
You are not saving money by doing this lol. You have to spend money designing the yoke, then lots of R&D on the steer by wire system that ensure you are not like Tesla etc.
ComoEstanBitches@reddit
Except the cyber truck is steer by wire even if it's a modified squircle yoke steering wheel. The decision to put the yoke on model s and x was downright stupid without steer by wire
Fearless_Neat_6654@reddit (OP)
Really?! You need to spend money to design something?! I thought it just showed up complete!!
Design always costs money; they'll regain it and more with lower material costs
xstreamReddit@reddit
This system is massively more expensive than a normal steering rack.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
No thx, keep yoke as race car thing.
stoned-autistic-dude@reddit
If it was in something cool, then hell yeah, I’m all for it. If it’s in a fucking EQS, the fuck am I going to do with a yoke?
vtGaem@reddit
Saves leg space, makes it so you can vertically place the yoke anywhere and not obstruct the gauges (or screen I guess), makes it clear the car has a SbW system so the driver doesn't attempt to turn it 360°. I say that's plenty of advantages.
mr_beanoz@reddit
Or make it an optional rather than the standard
coexee@reddit
Seems like an unpopular opinion, but from the review videos i saw online this seems to be a great system that they put in there. It's well thought through
EgorrEgorr@reddit
Do I remember correctly that steering yokes have recetly been baned in some country together with hidden door handls (maybe China)? I remember reading something about it, but not the details.
mr_beanoz@reddit
Stupid question time, but what makes yokes different to race car steering wheels that usually have their top cut off?
efads@reddit
Race cars can’t make tight turns like road cars can, plus they have much shorter steering ratios.
ScienceMechEng_Lover@reddit
Race cars have a much quicker steering ratio. Road cars don't have that as that would make them very twitchy for things like lane changes.
jrileyy229@reddit
Modern cars like this have variable steering ratios.
Salink@reddit
Race cars don't need to pull in and out of parking spots.
whittlingcanbefatal@reddit
結構です。
gimpwiz@reddit
I'm here to drink that haterade.
This looks like ass and Merc should be embarrassed.
Jaiden051@reddit
Its not as terrible as the Model S, more like the Cybertruck which also had steer-by-wire.
So the yolk is a much smaller problem because you don't need to turn the wheel as much to get full motion.
I do wonder If more steer-by-wire cars are going to use a yolk to differentiate from normal steering.
Scazitar@reddit
Wow they really hit the crack pipe on this one.
Lower_Kick268@reddit
As if the cars were shitty and poorly built enough as is
OR_Miata@reddit
Because the EQS wasn’t ugly/weird enough
