I’m going to melt, any help available?

TLDR. It’s freaking hot. I live in Memphis, this no AC is for the birds. I’m too broke to be forced to pay for a full diagnostic before I even pay for the repair. What can I say or where can I go to get the overcharged refrigerant let out, and have them refill it so I don’t have to mess with it, without them saying they won’t do it before they run their $200+ checks. Cause that’s the obvious problem and fix, and is already gonna be expensive enough to cause problems.
Also is there some gadget or something like an interior car AC I could use in the meantime so I don’t act out the end scene in Wizard of Oz every time I drive?
OKAY. So. My car AC has gone out. It’s overcharged. I didn’t do anything to cause it, but I did read the pressure because I was going to recharge it myself (done it before, was taught by mechanics). Prior to now, I’ve had zero issues whatsoever with my car, never needed to mess with recharging it in the 10 years I’ve had it. (Had to on my first car though. Thing was STRUGGLING lol).
Now to the problem. I. Am. Pooooor. I’ve been calling around for months on and off when I am no longer frustrated with previous places I’ve called, and have time to to try and find somewhere that will let off the pressure and refill if necessary so I don’t have to mess with it anymore. That’s going to be enough money, but so far the 6ish places I’ve called won’t do that unless I pay them around $200 to do a full diagnostic first, THEN I’d have to pay them for the repair. I GET wanting to check for anything else that could be wrong, but the condenser is fine, fans are running, and the compressor has the sensor shut off, so it’s not going to run with over pressure anyway. Economically, it would be smartest and cheapest I would think, to fix the obvious problem first, which is entirely likely to be the fix needed, versus doing a whole ass diagnostic first.
To the question. Is there a way I could phrase things to either have someone bypass the diagnostic, or a specific type of place to go that will let off the pressure and refill to see if that’s the fix before trying to make me pay a billion freaking dollars? Cause I’m stressing, melting, and sick of being asked stupid questions and getting a condescending attitude from these men when I answer.
Also is there some type of - hell idk - interior AC fan or something I could use in the meantime so I can breathe in my car while I wait to get the AC fixed. I know I can roll down the windows and all that, but I live in Memphis. That. Does. Nothing. May as well be walking into a steaming hot shower when you walk outside and try to breathe as it is lol.

No one is going to do it without testing the system because if they do, many people will then try to blame them when it breaks later down the road. AC systems are too expensive for labor and parts, so they can't afford the risk.

I totally get it 100%. They should have waivers to sign for stuff like this. Cause I know the need for caution, but I am too broke to be able to go that route unfortunately and living with I do with no AC in the height of summer is really not good. And I don’t mean uncomfortable. That I could deal with. lol
RemoteVersion838@reddit
I doubt any waiver is worth the paper its written on if pressed in court.
NeedsPaint@reddit
It snowed here last week lol
agdshaver@reddit (OP)
Whaaaat the fuck 🤣🤣 it’s not anywhere near top of our average temps yet, and has dropped cool here and there, but that’s why I need to have this fixed now. The height of summer here with no AC is far past just “uncomfortable” and just rolling down the windows isn’t a fix as much as I wish it was lol.
NeedsPaint@reddit
Oh it'll still hit 105F ish in summer with the humidity. A car without ac is tough tho
agdshaver@reddit (OP)
The humidity is what does us in down here. North MS and West TN, especially Memphis region is ROUGH with it. I never thought too much other than that’s just how the summer here is, until a friend who lived out further north sent me a news article talking about “wet bulb heat” which is what we get in this region, and asked if I was okay 🤣🤣 I didn’t know there was a name for “hell’s soup”. It’s all I’ve known so I’m used to swimming in the air during the summer. I just can’t do that in a car with no Ac 🤣 plus it’s a black car, and I’ve got 2 young kids.
All that to say I think I’d take the hot over snow. I hate the snow. So much. 🤷🏻♀️
NeedsPaint@reddit
Haha its all known here too so snow is normal to me. Id definitely miss it

AC for people in your situation is rolling down the windows.
agdshaver@reddit (OP)
Yes, thank you for the helpful advice, you totally fixed my problem. How stupid of me to not just roll my windows down, of course that fixes the whole situation for the time being. You obviously read my whole post, and me living in a region that absolutely doesn’t allow rolling down the windows to make a difference is a nonissue, I don’t know why I’d even bring it up. 🙄

AC pressure readings are high if the compressor is not on. You'll need to jumper the pressure switch to force the compressor on. Then you can read it and add pressure accordingly.
BigYesterday6059@reddit
They want to do a full diagnostic basically because they know that it's not overfilled. They need to figure out why it's not turning on. Most likely, it's low on refrigerant which is causing the pressure switch to say "hey don't turn on, you don't have enough refrigerant".
It could also be any number of other things: bad clutch, wiring fault, etc.

Oh I totally get it. I would also absolutely sign some waiver or something to get them to try the easiest fix first. Desperate and poor at this point, while I would love to be able to pay to do things “the right way”, I can’t and especially can’t pay for unnecessary things.
agdshaver@reddit (OP)
Thank you for an actual answer instead of being a smart ass 🤣Educated about all things cars, and on point with the terminology? Absolutely not. Totally clueless? Also no. But I’m also poor as shit, so here I am trying to explain what I figured out and had confirmed by someone who knows what the hell he’s talking about to get advice and I get “roll the windows down”. 🙄
I shall forward to my mechanic friend cause I’m not fucking with it myself, thank you!

It seems like you don't fully understand how air conditioners work.
It being overcharged doesn't really make any sense...
Indiscriminately messing with charge levels without doing a leak down test first also doesn't make any sense.

Nothing makes sense, but aside from me looking being the “I was forced to learn the essentials from a dad who works in the industry before I could drive” I also had a mechanic buddy look at it, who came to the same conclusion. Just doesn’t have the equipment to fix said problem. 🤷🏻♀️
