For those of you who haven’t gotten the shingles vaccine yet

I was going to get it regardless, but I managed to freak myself out after seeing all the posts and comments about the miserable side effects. I was DREADING it.
Now, I’ve only had the first one so maybe I’m in for a lot of hell with the second - but other than a sore arm I feel fine.
Just wanted to provide an alternative experience for those who haven’t gotten it yet. Maybe it won’t be so bad. ;)
fireflypoet@reddit
I had no side effects. Maybe slightly sore arm for a day.
Norfolkinchanceinh__@reddit
I'm still mad I need to get the shingles shot since I haven't had chicken pox and actually had the chicken pox vaccine as an adult.
eris_kali@reddit
You too? I'm the only one I know of in my family and friend group that never caught chicken pox. And I didn't react too well to the chicken pox vaccine (knocked me on my ass for days)
Norfolkinchanceinh__@reddit
My younger sister didn't get chicken pox either- I'm not sure if she got the vaccine though. I took my son to a chicken pox party and he didn't get them either. The vaccine came out a couple years later and he got it before entering school.
Bitter-Assignment464@reddit
I haven’t got them and won’t be. I don’t get sick really. Aside from dealing with hypertension thanks to family genetics I only have minor aches in my knee.
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
Did you have the chicken pox?
Bitter-Assignment464@reddit
I did mild case
kate__g@reddit
The same chicken pox virus can cause viral infection of the inner ear, which I had 7 years ago. I’m hoping the vaccine will protect against a reoccurrence.
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
Good luck
GoinMinoan@reddit
yeah, do it on a Friday so you can sleep the weekend away. made all the difference.
Aware-Owl4346@reddit
You know what has side effects a million times worse than the shingles vaccine? Shingles.
MienaLovesCats@reddit
Oh so you call deth a "side effect"? 🙄
MrsClaire07@reddit
…are you saying that you think the Shingles Vaccine will kill you??
MienaLovesCats@reddit
YES! I have a history of severe severe life threatening allergic reactions to vaccines. So does my mom and my daughter.
MrsClaire07@reddit
Sorry to hear that!
SamePhotographs@reddit
Aye. Two and a bit years from my first shingles infection (or third? Seems my additional bouts of the pox as a kid were technically shingles) and I'm still super medicated from the PHN. It's a lot. I keep being told I'm too young for the vaccine.
I will say, that my second, recent shingles infection was a lot less (maybe because of how medicated I was?) intense. I'm a year past it, and can only just tolerate wind/stray hair touching my face.
ayyabduction@reddit
Wow are people in this sub so vaccine crazy that you had to edit your post twice because you were getting harrassed so badly lol
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
I think people just don’t read posts 😂
UnregrettablyGrumpy@reddit
The first shot was no problem. The second shot was like the movies show when people withdrawal from heroin. I had the chills, sweats, and dry heaves for 2 days. However, I’d do it all again not to have the rash.
TracyVegas@reddit
You do you, but I’m not getting it. I did my doctoral dissertation about vaccines and I’m not getting it. I’m pro vaccine. Not alive ones.
TheBohemian1@reddit
Shingrix, which is the vaccine in the US is not a live virus vaccine.
TracyVegas@reddit
Fortunately I don’t have a weakened immune system.
MrsClaire07@reddit
This vaccine is NOT a live vaccine.
TracyVegas@reddit
Yes, I know that now. When I was looking into getting it, it was a live vaccine. I never looked back into it because I’m not interested.
lucid_intent@reddit
Things that didn’t happen, Alex.
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
Good luck then
MrsClaire07@reddit
GET IT. Yes, the side effects feel horrid for a day or two; I can ASSURE you they are NOTHING compared to the pain and duration of actual Shingles.
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
I got it. I got it.
ayyabduction@reddit
I had actual shingles. It wasn't that bad.
MrsClaire07@reddit
My Husband had Actual Shingles, they started on his chest and wrapped around under his right arm and onto his back. He was Miserable for two months, in the summer.
Acebobr@reddit
I had a crappy time either the shots, my sister didn’t. Happy for the both of you!
SteveTomaselli@reddit
Want to know what shingles is like? I got it on my face and it was like having ten demons take turns grabbing white-hot needles from a fire and stabbing me in the face with them. Over and over. In waves.
Get the shot.
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
Did you read my post? I got the shot.
Beautiful-Willow5813@reddit
I'm not old enough yet, but my husband just got his second shot this week. He warned his employees that he may be out and planned for a weekend of being sick. He was pleasantly surprised and only had a sore arm and a slight headache.
imalloverthemap@reddit
I recovered way faster from these than my Covid shots. Second shot went a lot easier.
StudyObjective4286@reddit
Just do it. I came down with shingles in my 20s and it was horrific. Like bubbly burns all over my body and out of body experience discomfort. Do not recommend.
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
I did do it. That’s the point of my post.
StudyObjective4286@reddit
Right - I meant for anyone still thinking - just do it.
freshrootveg@reddit
Second shot put me down. Judging by that, I'm grateful for that one night of controlled immunity building.
SoloRambler70@reddit
I got both shots a couple of years ago. I was expecting the worst for symptoms. After the first shot, my arm was sore around the shot area for a few days. After the second, I had no reaction at all, I seriously wondered if they even gave me the right one 😅
OldExistential@reddit
I did the first shot this past week, since it was a holiday weekend and I knew I’d have an extra day to recuperate if needed. Arm was a bit sore but I did some yard work to keep it moving and it was pretty much gone on day two. No other reaction. I’ve already scheduled time off for shot #2 in anticipation that it might be bad and if it’s not, I’ll have a nice little staycation and get some household chores done again.
Substantial_Door9120@reddit
Having had shingles outbreaks 3 times and neuropathy from it for the last 15 years, get the shot
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
I did
captain_222@reddit
You have to be 50 , right?
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
You do, yes
diamondsnrose@reddit
So I went the other route and got shingles. It must have been the world's mildest case bc it wasnt bad at all. I will be getting the shot, I'm not interested in shingles again, but I'd just like to add to the "don't panic" theme of the post! It was itchy for 10 days and kind of hurt for maybe 2. That's it.
badmommallama@reddit
Extremely lucky. It can be debilitating for many. My mother suffered horribly for weeks and was miserably the whole time.
9001@reddit
At what age did you get shingles?
diamondsnrose@reddit
My 45th bday. HBD!
9001@reddit
Damn, that's young
diamondsnrose@reddit
Thats what I thought - then I went in the shingles sub! I was SHOCKED at how many ppl were much younger than me. I def still associate it w older ppl, obvs the vaccine is for 50 (?) and older so it is associated w older ppl. But apparently it's not as uncommon in the 20s and 30s as I thought.
9001@reddit
I'm about to turn 55 and I see these threads every now and then, so I was thinking about it.
Turns out OHIP covers it but only between ages 65-70. That seems crazy to me.
diamondsnrose@reddit
It seems crazy bc it is!! 65, really? I would never have guessed that. Esp now that I'm such an expert from reading the sub lol.
ElizaJaneVegas@reddit
You were lucky!! My FIL was horrible, for a year, and ended up with laser treatment to destroy the nerve endings. Not me - never.
diamondsnrose@reddit
I totally agree. Sononce I was diagnosed I was like oh craaaappp lemme go check out the sub (as one does). I was terrified, just waiting for it all to come. It never came. I have no idea why. I started antivirals right away but so did a lot of ppl who had a terrible case. I wish I had some secret to share!!
AggravatingBobcat574@reddit
I just spent a day in the ophthalmology ER with my daughter because she’s just had a shingles outbreak on her face. Her left eye is swollen shut. There was concern that if it got to here eye, she could be blinded. (Looks like she’s gonna be okay). GET THE VACCINE. The side effects last a few hours. Blindness would be permanent.
badmommallama@reddit
Glad she will be okay! 100% agree on the vaccine!
badmommallama@reddit
Other than my arm being sore, both shots were fine for me. After watching several family members suffer with Shingles, it was a necessity.
athcliathabu@reddit
Presume it is covered by private health insurance in the US? Not covered by health insurance in Ireland and it costs €500 so that puts a lot of people off until they are 65+.
Ok-Commercial-924@reddit
I was a little tired after the shots but that could be because I was only sleeping 2-4hrs a night before and after the shots.
Squidalopod@reddit
FTFY 😊
LovesDeanWinchester@reddit
All I had was a sore arm for a couple of days. No biggie!
xx_HotShott_xx@reddit
Mine was fine. No different than a flu shot.
_Erindera_@reddit
2nd shot sucks but not as much as shingles sucks!
IcyCryptographer5919@reddit
Never had Chickenpox and got the Pox vaccine. 🤷🏻♂️
NotEasilyConfused@reddit
I didn't have a problem with either one, and I got it at the same time I did the flu and COVID shots that year.
dmac66@reddit
my first shot was nothing. the second one got me good.
Livid_Bag_4374@reddit
Yeah, the second shot sucks, but man, the shingles suck more! I remember a friend of the family came down with it, and she was miserable for 6 weeks. Been a long time ago, but definitely get the pokes!
ElizaJaneVegas@reddit
Don’t be so sure it will be miserable. My first shot, absolutely nothing. 2nd shot, woke up at 3am with chills, bundled into a hoodie. Went right back to sleep; woke up in the morning feeling fine.
Go for it!
bookworthy@reddit
I’m dreading it but I know I need it
AnnabellaPies@reddit
First one arm hurt and tired and second the same just 3 days. I think this was quite mild and just spent the weekend chilling. Monday hit the gym and lift about 9000kg
five_two@reddit
I've had both shots and I was in the unfortunate group to experience chills, entire body aches, fatigue, soreness/redness around the injection site. I was pretty much down for 2 days. But, better than getting shingles.
parkerhalem84@reddit
I am nearly 50 and had never had chicken pox even when my parents tried to have my bros and I to mingle with other infected kids with chicken pox. I will check with my doc if I should get said vaccine.
CommunicationHappy20@reddit
If I were you I’d get the antibody test. I never vaccinated my son because he had the pox when he was 3. They gave me flack registering him for school about not having a vaccine on record so I had to get the blood test to prove he had the antibodies. Had to do the same for myself reentering college because they didn’t vaccinate us in the early 80’s and a vaccination is required.
Upper_Ad_4837@reddit
Ok I'm 56 , mum has no idea what vacs I've had or if I had the pox ,so I can be tested? She had shingles and it definitely was not pleasant.
CommunicationHappy20@reddit
Yes. It’s a simple blood test
Numerous_Bad1961@reddit
Just get the Shingles vaccines
CyberJaxWabbit-1312@reddit
i've never had chicken pox either, and after discussing the shingles vaccine in that context with my PCP, she advised that i still consider getting it, which i'll be doing later this Spring. i'll be 53 in a few days and am in excellent health, so i'm not concerned about side effects like a sore arm or feeling like shit for a few days, they're just a normal part of getting vaccinated jFc 🤷🏻
CommunicationHappy20@reddit
I’d get the antibody test first. I’m not an antivaxxer but I still don’t put unnecessary shite in my body.
CyberJaxWabbit-1312@reddit
thanks for the insight
Elegant-Pineapple-56@reddit
I had a sore arm and mild fatigue after first and second. It was a relief, as I set aside a full 24 hrs to recover, if necessary.
Gold-Fall3790@reddit
I had zero side effects from #1 except very minor soreness. That probably means I’ll be bedridden for a week with the 2nd one. I’m scheduling it in a couple of weeks when I have absolutely nothing going on.
DunkinEgg@reddit
I’m due for mine later this year.
Bastard1066@reddit
My boss is never got the shot. Got shingles.... is now telling everyone to get the damn shot!
endosurgery@reddit
Exactly. Shingles can not only be painful it can be devastating. Especially if you get it on the face. It can lead to blindness. I never had any issue with the vaccine side effects, but I don’t have significant side effects from any vaccine. People these days and the BS antivaxx rhetoric. There’s a reason we have vaccines folks. It is because having those diseases is a hell of a lot worse than a day of a sore arm and feeling under the weather.
Numerous_Bad1961@reddit
And Alzheimer’s later in life.
CompetitivePut9803@reddit
I had a very sore arm, it was quite painful. Still better than getting shingles!
ImAnOldFuckSoWhat@reddit
Had my first shot one month ago with no issues other than a sore arm. I’m hoping for a similar result with the second.
nietheo@reddit
My second one was worse, but just a day or so of fever and aches all over. Felt like having the flu for a day, not great but not horrible.
Mindless-Baker-7757@reddit
Mine was the same. I mixed in some other vaccines too but everyone tells me shingles is the one that took me down.
Mindless-Baker-7757@reddit
I just went ahead and got shingles 15 years ago.
Glass_Author7276@reddit
I wouldn't know, I don't do vacines.Last one I had was around 1980 or so. You can't refuse them in the USMC.
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
Thank you for your contribution to the conversation.
WeedBubby@reddit
Not one side effect from either shot for me (52f). And even if there were, rather that than shingles!!
BlakeMajik@reddit
I had no side effects either, but I'm also the type that has experienced only the most minor soreness from any injections.
BadEnucleation@reddit
I had no effects from the first one. The second one was the first time I ever had noticeable side effects from any vaccine, but overall it wasn’t too bad.
After those (it’s been a few years) I did notice effects after the Covid shots which were worse for me than the shingles ones.
YMMV of course.
SmartyFox8765@reddit
I had no side effects at all. It’s just not worth getting shingles, it can be horrible.
swentech@reddit
I think the effects are oversold a bit. For me the first one was a sore arm and the second was like having the flu for a couple days. Not so bad.
amy_lou_who@reddit
Is the risk lower if you had a horrible case of chicken pox as a child?
I know I’m paranoid but I’ve had horrible reactions to the covid vaccine (I’m registered with VSafe for monitoring), I’ve also had reaction to the flu vaccine.
I’ll probably get it when I turn 50 in July.
Angry_Tomato_@reddit
Your risk of reactivation won’t be any different than anyone else that contracted chickenpox.
Chickenpox is an alphaherpesvirus. That means once you have it you are its host for the rest of your life. It is lying dormant in you now, waiting for the immune system to wane a bit so it can re-activate and travel down your nerve pathways to erupt on the skin.
When I turned 50 I was beating down my doctor’s door to start the shingles series.
julesyhedgie@reddit
Are you asking if the risk of getting shingles is possible after a bad case of childhood chicken pox? If you had chicken pox as a child, you can get shinglesbat any time because the virus lies dormant in your nerves until something triggers it.
Electrical-Risk445@reddit
Got my shots the moment I couldn't them. The couple of crappy-ish days is nothing compared to actual shingles. Same with the flu shot.
Buckar00banzai2@reddit
This is going to be unpopular.
My take away from covid was that I am never getting another vaccine ever again.
BenefitAdvanced@reddit
Why? The covid vaccine was a success creating immunity and will continue to save countless lives https://www.yalemedicine.org/news/covid-19-vaccine-comparison
CrankyDoo@reddit
The covid vaccines were terrible at creating immunity and even the article you cite explicitly states “ people may still become infected even though they have been vaccinated, but the goal of the vaccines is to prevent severe disease”.
BenefitAdvanced@reddit
So then why does the medical community and CDC overwhelmingly recommend them?
CrankyDoo@reddit
That’s a really good question, and leads to other questions. Like why did they continue to recommend them for healthy children long after most of Europe had already stopped recommending them? The fatality rate for covid for healthy children is effectively zero. They are not effective at preventing infection. They do have side known side effects (one can debate their frequency but not their existence). Why recommend a treatment to a population which had very little to gain and some degree of risk, particularly after the rest of the world had already stopped? Hmmm…I can’t quite put my finger on why.
CrankyDoo@reddit
Same. I refuse to get any vaccine for a disease that is immensely unlikely to kill me. If there’s ever a lab leak and smallpox enters the world again, I’ll be the first guy in line for a shot. But I have no interest in preventing a disease that is nonfatal 99.9% of the time (and even the rare fatalities are almost exclusively in unhealthy people). Even with the severe side effects they like to scare people with, there is a clear relationship between severity of symptoms and overall health. I simply keep my body extremely healthy and don’t worry about it. So far it’s been a very effective strategy.
It’s incredibly odd how ubiquitous vaccines have been accepted and embraced by so many people with an almost religious level of fervor. It’s a little creepy honestly.
rip67@reddit

Fuddle@reddit
Very few people post anything online when something is just ok or wasn’t a disaster.
PristineAlbatross988@reddit

TheTwinSet02@reddit
I asked my GP about it, he talked me out of it
Said the only cases he sees are living in residential aged care, I can get it for free when I’m 65 - I’m 56 now
I’m just off to get my flu and Covid vax and will think about Shingles vax later
depthchargethel@reddit
That’s crazy talk. I got shingles for the first time when I was 34. It’s not an old persons disease, and it’s not contagious. It’s lying dormant in your body, just waiting for an opportunity to take you down.
dieselgirlpdx@reddit
My mom got shingles and she lives at home with my dad. Never set foot in any kind of residential care facility. Why the hell she had not gotten vaccinated before this, I’ll have no idea.
Substantial-Spare501@reddit
Shingles is extremely painful and can cause permanent damage.
Normal_Weekend_2006@reddit
Had both shots. Zero side affects
MienaLovesCats@reddit
I haven't gotten it and never will. I haven't had a vaccine; since I was 18 months old. When I almost died; from a severe life threatening allergic reactions to vaccines.
SunshineAlways@reddit
Which is another reason why everyone else should get the vaccines, to help protect the people who can’t have them.
PDXisadumpsterfire@reddit
TLDR: Shingles is nothing to mess around with. The vaccine complications are real, but shingles is way worse and because it’s viral, the symptoms can flare up over and over.
When I entered my 40s, all of a sudden I became one of those “lucky” people whose immune system overreacts to getting most vaccines. I have to plan a vaccine for a Friday so I (hopefully) don’t have to take time off work to be sick. I don’t get flu shots anymore bc I’m willing to roll the dice on not getting the flu vs virtual guarantee of being down for at least 2 days after a flu shot.
However, I’d heard such terrible things about shingles and how painful the eruptions are that I didn’t hesitate to get the series of two shingles vaccines as soon as my provider recommended it.
I have a nasty history with herpes viruses. When the other kids at my babysitter’s got chicken pox, I developed a systemic viral infection that caused painful sores inside my mouth and esophagus. I was 4 yo and still remember it. Terrified my parents bc my pediatrician had no idea what it was and had to send them to a university hospital hours away for answers. They determined the symptoms were caused by a herpes virus related to the herpes virus that causes chicken pox. At that time, early 70s, anti-viral drugs weren’t what they are now, so my poor parents (who were in their mid-20s) were sent home with a diagnosis, sympathy and advice about managing the symptoms until the viral eruption subsided. Also a screaming child who wouldn’t eat or drink anything because of the painful sores.
Shingles are caused by a herpes virus, so given my history, I figure there’s a decent chance I’m especially susceptible to herpes virus-related illnesses. I used to get cold sores (also caused by a herpes virus) every couple months for decades, which was mortally embarrassing as a child and teen. When I was in my mid-30s, I went to a new primary care physician for an annual physical and happened to have a cold sore. He asked some questions and told me I’d never have to suffer like that from now on, wrote me an Rx for acyclovir, which completely changed my life. It prevents most outbreaks, and if I feel that awful tingle that signals a cold sore coming, I take a double dose and that usually stops it in its tracks. And the ones that break through are smaller and heal much faster.
The shingles vaccines were semi-painful going in. First one was a lot worse than the second, I think bc the Walgreen’s pharmacist administering it was in a hurry and the pharmacist at our local independent pharmacy who gave the second shot wasn’t so busy and took his time. They’re pretty big vaccines, volume-wise, so technique matters. And I have kind of scrawny arms these days, so not much meat in my upper arms to absorb the medication.
I had no reaction to the first vaccine other than a sore arm and an ugly bruise at the injection site. After the second, I had a vaccine reaction, felt like I had the flu for about three days, and the injection site swelled up painfully but did not bruise. Still glad I did it, though! Last thing I need is a painful, debilitating illness that can show up repeatedly.
julesyhedgie@reddit
Sorry to hear about your childhood herpes. i too have suffered from herpes reactivation sauce childhood which affected my eye. I eventually had a corneal transplant because the recurrent infections had scarred the corneal to the point I was legally blind in that eye. Now I have perfect vision with an excellent ophthalmologist. I take valacyclovir every day to prevent herpes virus activation. With my herpes history, it was a no brainer to get the 2 shot shingrix.
Jaydee----@reddit
I have always been an outlier with vaccine responses. Always on the bad side. In fact, I believe that I got shingles from the covid shot. This requiring that I now need the shingles vaccine. I drug my feet for ages on it.
reconobox@reddit
I got my first dose recently. It just made me kinda tired for about a day. I took a sick day and binge watched some shows.

We just got Shot 2.
So far, just a sore arm.
Spouse has some fatigue, as well but that's it.
Fingers crossed!
(No burdensome impact from 1 for either of us either)
YogurtclosetParty755@reddit
I had shingles and I’ve subsequently had the shingles vax. Shingles is by MANY orders of magnitude worse than the shot. It’s not any worse than the Covid vaccine. Just go get it.
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
I did get it. Did you read my post?
BlueFeathered1@reddit
If/when I get it, I'm sticking with one dose only. Will provide some protection anyway. But I get severe side effects from even the vaccines that are mild for most people, and I feel panicky about this one.
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
You’re supposed to get two. Do you know more than the doctors?
BlueFeathered1@reddit
There's some preliminary data saying it may provide some protection, though not enough data yet to confirm how much.

2nd shot sore arm & NOTHING else.

lunchbox91972@reddit
Both of them kicked my ass for a couple of days. I had shingles about 8 years ago and that sucked for a couple of weeks. I have no desire to get shingles ever again.
Icy-Map9410@reddit
I had both vaccines, 2 months apart. Like you, I was scared to death from reading about other people’s bad experiences and put it off. But all I had was a sore arm, both times. That was it. As a matter of fact, my pneumonia vaccine was much worse-I could barely move my arm for two days with that one.
Wactout@reddit
It will suck. For a few days. Better than a month, I was on fire when I was 30. I only had it across my chest. I’ve heard of people who got it in their eye and in their mouth. I still drank myself to sleep every single night, because nothing prescribed touched it.
powerhikeit@reddit
My partner had shingles about 8 years ago, prior to being vaccinated. They still have nerve pain to this day. The couple of days of post-vax misery is better than a lifetime of pain.
Quick_Dark244@reddit
I’m 51 don’t have shingles hope not to get whatever they are but did anyone look into any holistic remedies before taking a shot. I just don’t do vaxx for anything and will not. I’m going to look into alternatives b.
itgoesineasy@reddit
I had no problems with the first shot. I had the same experience as you described. However, the second one I had what felt like the worst flu of my life. Achy, fever and just miserable. It only lasted about 12 hours and I felt fine pretty quickly. Hopefully you won’t have it happen to you. I know a few people that didn’t have that happen after the second shot. It was totally worth it. I had a minor case of shingles and it was miserable. I’m fine being sick briefly to not have to shingles again.
rp_player_girl@reddit
Got my second one the other day. About 6 hours later I started feeling like i had the flu and definitely ran a high fever last night. It's the worst response I've ever had to a vaccine But I'd do it again. I had a (luckily) very small patch of shingles before and my mother had it on her thighs. I'll take this. Just wish I'd planned to be able to rest more. And keep the aspirin and ibuprofen near the bed!
Yummy_Castoreum@reddit
My friend got shingles and was like THIS SUCKS, YOU DO NOT WANT THIS. So I got the vaccination and I'm relieved that I did.
Hot_Fox_5656@reddit
First one gave me a sore arm for sure. Second one my head hurt behind my eyes for a few days. Not horrible.
Specialist_Cancel921@reddit
so i was in the boat of nah, i dont need a vaccine. then i guess mr f*ckyou heard it and i got the shingles. herpes zoster encephalitis. I have had gout for a while and it can be pretty painful but I realize gout is a walk in the park compared to getting the shingles. I put out a few attention to all in our company slack not advising but begging everyone to get shots if they qualify. for reference, im 55 and in relatively good shape. This put me on my ass for a couple of weeks and 13 pounds later... no matter what anyone says about the vaccine, get it. I was told to get mines after this episode. Good luck!
neverinamillionyr@reddit
I let my dr talk me into doing the shingles, flu and pneumonia shots all at once. They kicked my ass for a week or so. Never again
SuspectLarge@reddit
I had a sore arm and minor headache with the first shot. All my (male) friends told me the second shot was the absolute worst. Sweet silly babies.
I had zero side effects with the second shot.
And a friend who did not get the vax just got shingles... on his eyeball.
So, you know, weigh the consequences and get the shots!
neverinamillionyr@reddit
I wasn’t saying not to get the shots. Getting all of them at once is a bad idea.
ytse411@reddit

I had a sore arm and a bad headache for about 48 hours. I get my 2nd in August.
ContributionDry2252@reddit
After the first shot, sore arm for a couple of days, and one day like catching a flu. Two days from the second.
Just that one day difference, otherwise just like after the annual flu shots.
Dry_Tap_169@reddit
Sore arm but that is it for both shots. It’s is so worth it not to get shingles.
QueenScorp@reddit
Same here.
102aksea102@reddit
Same! I actually didn’t know people had such severe side effects. I just went in and got it as soon as I hit 50. Then got the second 90 days later. And only after that did I read all of the deathly ill comments on Reddit.
QueenScorp@reddit
I vaguely remember hearing about side effects at one point and so when my doctor brought it up I asked her about side effects and she said it's usually just a sore arm. Just like with any vaccine, there's a small faction of people who have worse side effects but it's not as common as people are worried about. I would liken it to the sore arm I had with the covid vaccine.
Unfortunately the people who have bad side effects are the ones who talk about it so it seems a lot more prevalent. Like I don't go around on forums talking about how I had nothing but a sore arm with my shingles vaccine unless someone asks because it's a non-issue.
jetpack324@reddit
I had shingles about 10 years ago and recognized the symptoms early. Went to the doctor that afternoon and got some shot to lessen the severity. It helped tremendously but the shingles still sucked. I got the vaccine last year when my insurance would finally cover it. I don’t know if a person can get shingles a 2nd time, but my grandmother had the same case of shingles for years and it flared up once or twice a year. I want to avoid that if at all possible so I got the vaccine anyway. Side affects were nothing compared to my mild case of shingles.
Bryanmsi89@reddit
Plus side? In addition to effectively preventing one truly miserable disease (shingles) you may be lowering your chances of another truly miserable disease (Alzheimer’s).
Cort1973@reddit
This was my main reason for getting vaccinated. While I don't want shingles, I'll do anything I can to possibly stave off dementia. Pharmacist just called me the other day to say I'm ready for my second shot - I'll go on a Friday and spend the weekend being pitiful.
mostlycatsandquilts@reddit
Yes let’s upvote this!
The study regarding dementia was done on the previous (much less effective against shingles) vaccine, so no data for this two-part vaccine yet (as far as i know)
And this two-part vaccine has better protection against shingles sooo….
Still seems like a great idea to get the two-part vaccine!
— for some people shingles is just a mild rash that’s slightly irritating for a week or two
— and for others it’s months and months of excruciating pain… and possibly worse if it’s on the face and affects the eye or ear
ronwabo@reddit
I had a sore arm and 24 hour headache for the first shot, basically nothing at all for the second shot. I was scared too from this sub and a former coworker who got laid out from his second shot.
deedeejayzee@reddit
I never had chicken pox, so I'm not at risk for shingles
gothfru@reddit
I don't think that's actually true. I didn't have them either, but I made damned sure I got my vax at 50.
deedeejayzee@reddit
It is true. You can't get shingles if you've never had chicken pox. Shingles is a reaction to the chicken pox virus that's already in someone's body
gothfru@reddit
Interesting. Unfortunately I did test positive for the antibodies in my twenties, so maybe I was just asymptomatic.
deedeejayzee@reddit
My childhood doctor told me that he thinks I have a natural resistance to it, which would be genetic. I have been exposed many times but never got it and have no evidence of the antibodies that deveop as a result of prior infection. My father never had it either, although he was sent to a few pox parties as a kid
Dismal-Mastodon-8359@reddit
I had zero side effects with either, fortunately.
Phobos1982@reddit
Get it!!! I got shingles before I was eligible. Nothing you might experience as a side-effect from the shot is as bad as shingles itself.
Boom_Gate_Lady@reddit
Op says in the post they are getting the second one.Just trying to pass on that they had minimal sides effects.
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
Did you read my post?
Pitiful-Visual-4510@reddit
I’ll never take another shot.
cracksbacks@reddit
You get sick for a day or two, and you don't even get that sick. Your arm will be sore. That's about it. It's like a bad flu shot reaction. No big deal.
Middle_Difference_95@reddit
Exactly! So much fear mongering
Basserist71@reddit
I’ll share my shingles vaccine story, because it ended up helping me.
I had shingles, and it affected the nerves in my lower back. The pain there was pretty severe. When I turned 50, my doctor recommended that I go ahead and get the shingles vaccine, so I did.
I didn’t have many side effects, just some lethargy and malaise for a short time. But after getting the vaccine, the area in my lower back that had seemed weakened started feeling normal again, and I haven’t had that pain since.
That was my experience, and it was a very positive one. Good luck to anyone else considering it. It really helped me.
Awe3@reddit
Stop procrastinating and get it. Having the shingles is much much worse than feeling a little sick after a shot.
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
Did you read my post? I got the damn thing yesterday.
Awe3@reddit
Weirdly I didn’t see anything after the first paragraph. Now I see all of it.
mtguy93@reddit
I got the first shot, then went out and got shitfaced. Was pretty sick the next morning, but not sure it was all because of the shot!
firegrrl@reddit
I just got my second shot today and so far zero side effects.
theePedestrian@reddit
I’ve had both, had zero side effects except the usual sore arm.
Potential_Sundae_251@reddit
I’ve had both and no side effects. I was scared too.
Phreedom1@reddit
I've had both shots with zero side effects.
toblies@reddit
I've done both, and had near-zero side effects from either the first or the second...
But maybe im just lucky. I've generally tolerated most vaccinations well.
Tuxswimmer@reddit
I am a member of the 1% of GenX that never had chicken pox. I got the vaccine for chicken pox when it finally came out. Have heard that the vaccine for the pox can cause a milder form of shingles though. Not sure if I need the shingles vaccine or not now.
cat_headstand@reddit
I had zero problems with both shots. And I was super nervous after reading a lot of posts in this sub.
Subject-Stuff-2829@reddit
As soon as Im eligible to get it, I will. Eagerly. I dont give a whooping funt about what others have said about so called side effects.
kobuta99@reddit
I got my vaccine and it was sore arm and pretty mild overall after both. I generally have been lucky with not experiencing much discomfort after vaccines.
My experience with shingles before that was relatively more tolerable than many of the stories I've heard, but still way more annoying and painful than the vaccines. And you can still pass on shingles to others, especially if you are around who are unvaccinated or pregnant. As always, vaccines not only help you, but it is protection for others around you who cannot get the vaccine themselves
Open_Mortgage_4645@reddit
As soon as I'm eligible for it, I'll be getting it. I've seen what shingles does to people and there's no way I'm dealing with that. It's a safe and effective vaccine that protects you against a horrific viral outbreak. The fact that side effects are possible doesn't make them likely. Don't be an anti-vaxxer.
New-Sheepherder2239@reddit
I honestly think if I was going to get shingles it would have happened with my college sophomore. I’m serious. He’s fine and doing well but holy shit. The last three years have been quite a ride
Unfair-Ad2664@reddit
Had both shots. A little soreness which I will trade any day, all day to avoid getting Shingles...
It's a no brainer for me and my wife

In Australia. Can't afford the $300, terrified of shingles.
imnoteunice@reddit
I just got my second dose of shingles yesterday and woke up this morning with a sore arm and mild body aches. Felt better after ibuprofen and a hot shower, and now I’m fine. Well worth it for protection from the dangerous complications of shingles.
CurrentFew6275@reddit
My arm got slightly sore after each injection. My hubby is about to turn 50, so I have an appointment set up the day after to get his shots started. I'm a retired nurse and I have treated sooo many folks who suffered with shingles. No me, Satan! Not me!
Coffeeyespleeez@reddit

NJRougarou@reddit
The only reason I'm thinking of getting it is because there's some evidence that can help decrease future risk of dementia.
Freyja_Valhalla@reddit
We waited the full six months for the second one and it wasn’t nearly as bad as the first one. This time no fever, just tired and aches for 2 days and the third day just felt a bit tired but ok. The first vax reaction was 102 fevers and more flu like for a full 3 days and another 2 days feeling off; not bad just tired.
ytse411@reddit
My Dr told me get #2 between 2-6 months after #1. I'm waiting 3 months. Wonder if that makes a difference?
Freyja_Valhalla@reddit
I read many posts where people that had a strong reaction to the first one having a better outcome by waiting the full 6months, so that’s why we waited vs doing it earlier. Of course everyone is different, but definitely getting it regardless of timing is the most important part.
Kickingandscreaming@reddit
Whats the deal with the hard push to jab everyone with this vaccine? Never had chicken pox. Absolutely certain. Mom also verified. She even kept me hone when other parents threw a chickenpox party in 1972 to intentionally get their own kids sick. CVS keeps pushing vaccine on me. When I got Flu RSV. and Covid shots Pharmacist was giving me the hard sell even suggesting i could have been exposed as a child without knowing. Google AI even pushes it when I asked if i should get it when I never had chickenpox, even suggesting I should get a blood test to verify I never had it.
NewMexicoJoe@reddit
Shingles can do permanent, life altering neurological damage to people.
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit (OP)
Then this doesn’t apply to you. Move on.
spackletr0n@reddit
Most people had chicken pox, and shingles is an outright awful experience. A lot of people don’t know about the vaccine.
You’re rare and lucky if you’re not at risk. So politely say no and get the fuck on with your life instead of resentment bragging on here.
Practical_Adagio_504@reddit
You should talk to your Doctor about getting the chicken pox vaccination then. It actually is a form of Herpes virus that lives forever on the nerve sheaths once you catch it and then reappears latter in life and is called shingles then when it erupts back out the skin at the ends of the nerve sheaths it previously infected as chicken pox.
Crusoebear@reddit
Gave you spoken with people who‘ve had shingles? Every one of their stories was the only “hard push” I needed or received.
Zorrha@reddit
Got the shingles vaccine because I saw just how miserable my brother was when he got sick. It's not abig deal to get the shot. Sore arm & a little under the weather was all that happened.
Falcifer13@reddit
I got both other than a sore arm I had zero sides... my mom's got shingles twice and yeah. Glad I got the vax.
demona2002@reddit
I didn’t have any issues at all with shingles vaccine. However anyone Ive known with actual shingles suffered greatly.
Ryokurin@reddit
I got it when I was 42. I was on antivirals within hours of the rash starting and it still felt like my arm was on fire for 2-3 days. I also know someone who got it around their face and they ended up losing vision in the eye on that affected side. For anyone just reading and on the fence, just do it on a long weekend you don't have any plans for. You don't want it, I'm still a couple of years from 50 and recently found out that some Dr's will do it early as long as you are willing to pay out of pocket. I'm very much considering it.
Any_Flamingo8978@reddit
I tried to get mine a year or so early from a local Rite Aid or whatever. I was willing to pay out of pocket because I know I deal poorly with pain. The pharmacist came out to talk to me to convince me to wait a year till I was 50. Her reasoning was that I was very close to it not being super expensive, and I was not have a preexisting condition like diabetes or crones. To the point that she told me she would need a justification to files in her paperwork. I just felt mortified and gave up, I almost felt like they suspected me of having some freakish compulsion, it was weird. Like ffs someone actually wants to get vaccinated and pay out of pocket, and you turn them away. Perhaps she didn’t want to deal with extra paperwork, but it felt crappy. Going soon, as soon as I kick this cold!
Crusoebear@reddit
It wasn’t that bad for me either. And from what I’ve learned from people that actually had shingles …a thousand times more preferable.
Sea-League-5911@reddit
As someone who’s had shingles 4x? Suck it up and deal with the side effects for a few days. I went over 15 yrs between the last 2 episodes and figured I was in the clear and I’d “get around to getting the jab”.
This last time it got in my eye - it’s been over 6 months and I’m still dealing with it. I’d give anything to be able to get the jab. I now have to wait a year from when it’s finally cleared. Like I said, it’s been 6 months and I’ll likely be on meds for the long-term.
If you’ve never had shingles, do your best to avoid that ever happening.
coffeemagic_11-11@reddit
I go Thursday for my poke. What’s the schedule for the 2nd dose?
ridbax@reddit
2-6 months. Best to schedule it in the middle of that spread in case you have to postpone it for whatever reason, you want to stay within that 6 month window.
coffeemagic_11-11@reddit
Gotcha, thanks
Any_Meeting_4082@reddit
6 months after the 1st shot
coffeemagic_11-11@reddit

dreaminginteal@reddit
The first one put me to sleep for a day. I was dreading the second one.
The second one? My arm was sore, as if someone had poked it with a sharp metal implement. That was it.
Curtiskam@reddit
I had general lethargy for a few days. Nothing awful.
Ok-Abbreviations543@reddit
First, a very good research study came out showing that the shingles vaccine dramatically lowers your risk of developing dementia.
It comes in 2 shots. First one was no problem. The second one, I was down hard for three days. I don’t regret it. I would just plan for it and discuss how to deal with the symptoms. I would equate it to having a bad flu.
Nicole_Bitchie@reddit
This!!!! The vaccine lowers your risk of dementia. I’ll take feeling crappy for a day or two to be protected against both a painful virus and dementia.
Acrobatic-Message840@reddit
I felt like death after the second one for two days, however it's still better than getting shingles, I hear. Also, I got a letter last week from my kids' school that they had been exposed to chicken pox. I am not at all worried because my kids have been vaccinated and I have had the shingles vaccine. I'll take two days of feeling bad over that hell any day.
Catnip_75@reddit
I’ve had shingles on the back of my neck. It was very itchy and sore, but not that bad. If you get it on your face that’s when it can be bad as it can cause vision loss.
Catnip_75@reddit
I’m still not getting it this young. My doctor said it only has a 5-7 year effective time, so you likely have to get it every 7-10 years. He told me to wait till I’m 70 or 75 and just get it once.
Neat-Ad11@reddit
I didn’t feel any worse than the Covid shots. Basically I felt like I was getting the flu (achy mostly) after the first shot but knowing that it was just from the shot I sort of dealt with it. When I got the second shot I asked the nurse if I could take Tylenol every four hours and she said it was fine so I started right away and didn’t feel a thing and felt fine in a day. So much better than getting the real thing.
spartygw@reddit
The first dose rocked me hard. I never got the 2nd. But I also never had chicken pox so I’m hoping there’s some natural immunity.
jaydog22_watching@reddit
This is confusing on so many levels
spartygw@reddit
Why?
jaydog22_watching@reddit
Why would you get vaccinated against shingles if you never had chickenpox. You get chickenpox after your first infection with VZV. Shingles is a reactivation of the initial chickenpox infection, so you can’t get shingles if you’ve never been exposed to VZV
spartygw@reddit
If you’ve had the chicken pox vaccine you can get shingles, whether you have had CP or not
bobs_big_bob@reddit
Why would you get it if you didn’t have chicken pox tho?
spartygw@reddit
Dr said I should.
Daienlai@reddit

EnricoMatassaEsq@reddit
For those who are hesitant because they might be down for a few days I would say it’s worth it. I got both doses but still ended up getting shingles on my right temple. However, it was a spot about the size of a large cashew and I never really got the nerve pain. Just an occasional discomfort more akin to an itch for a couple weeks. It never spread and was barely noticeable on my face. I’m convinced that had I not been vaccinated, it would have certainly been worse.
60PersonDanceCrew@reddit
It definitely would have! I know someone who had it on their face and it spread close to their eye. It can cause blindness, so it was pretty scary.
EnricoMatassaEsq@reddit
Yep! It was suggested by my PCP to see my eye doctor just to make sure it wasn’t messing with my optic nerve or anything. Any time it’s in the neighborhood of your eye you don’t want to mess around.

Maybe it depends on how along between the 1st & 2nd shot the level of severity/side effects- because other than that, there’s no rhyme or reason why some people get it worse than others save for perhaps a weaker immune system- I heard you have to wait a certain amount of time after the first shot but no longer than 6 months after the first shot

jax2love@reddit
I was basically fine after both. Had a mild headache and was tired, but that’s it.
Naive-Garlic2021@reddit
Sometimes I think the people saying the shingles shot was awful have never been sick in their lives.
Was it unpleasant to stay in bed with aches and chills and fever and a general yuk feeling? Yes. But I have been much sicker with the flu and COVID, sometimes a full week in bed with more intense symptoms followed by a 6-week lung recovery. So, perhaps the reports depend on past experience with illness.
It's about the trade off--is it worth it to risk not feeling well for a couple days with the expectation of reduced or no shingles in the future? I thought it was. And in between my first and second shot, I saw my first shingles case, in someone who never gets sick. That was the first time I had seen them lying down during the day!
MaligatorMom2@reddit
Just had my first shot a week ago. Other than a sore arm for several days, I was perfectly fine. I will plan to do my 2nd shot where I have nothing planned for a few days just in case, but it is infinitely better than getting shingles.

UsedHotDogWater@reddit
People who get the vaccine have a significant reduction in Alzheimer's. That should be enough reason.
I've had Guillien Barre Syndrome which means any vaccine could trigger an immune response and I could be paralyzed again. But I fear Alzheimer's more than being paralyzed and having a decade of recovery again.

I'm 55, I got one.
Large-Delay-1123@reddit
50 In the US.
hair_10@reddit
Didn't have any issues (other than sore injection site) with either.
Rare-Maintenance4820@reddit
It wasn’t bad at all for me. A little arm soreness for both shots. Now the Covid shot lays me out with fever and chills for 3 days, but shingles was a snap
strngejones@reddit
Like a lot of others here, had both shots. Only had a sore arm for a couple days. Get it.
a65sc80@reddit
Got it at 53. It was not bad at all. Slight soreness. That's it.
hazeldazeI@reddit
I’ve had both doses and both times my arm was a little sore and I was a little tired but that’s it. No biggie.
hamstercaster@reddit
Well, it’s time for “I know a guy.” Let’s just say a manager for the company I worked at previously said he received 1 shot. Unfortunately, he came down with shingles on his face, it entered his eye, then to his retina. It scared his retina and he lost half his site in 1 eye. Get the vaccine. I had shingles, it is no fun and it gets worse with age.
Huge_Road_9223@reddit
I'm in my late 50's myself, and I was told by my doctor to get the shingles (Shingrix) Vaccine which is 2 shots.
Honestly, shots mostly don't bother me ... the Shingles shot, either one of them never gave me any side effects.
I also got my covid shot and flue every fall around the same time when they first come out, and again ... none of these shots has ever been an issue for me.
Cookiecakes71@reddit
It's been said before but the shots are still better than having shingles.
BranchFickle568@reddit
my arm was sore for the first shot, but no other side effects. none at all with the second shot.
missblissful70@reddit
Just FYI, I got both shingles shots in December and had shingles - a mild case - the following November. Just know that can happen too!
New-User9585@reddit
They are supposed to be separated by two to six months. If you got them both in the same month you might not have had full coverage.
missblissful70@reddit
I had them nine weeks apart.
New-User9585@reddit
I got my first two weeks ago. My arm was very sore for like four days, but otherwise no nnegative side effects.
spargel_gesicht@reddit
Oh it mildly sucks when you’re in the thick of it, but for me, the first one was nbd, the second one I spent the next day on the couch feeling like I had a flu. 90% back to normal the second day. As bad as any side effects are, remember it’s better than shingles!
Yamanevets@reddit
I got shingles two weeks after turning 50. Still have PHN and it's been a few years. Get the shot.
Murder_Teddy_Bear@reddit
Holy Hell, me too! What the fuck, like the virus is just waiting there for the big five-oh..
Murder_Teddy_Bear@reddit
I had my first ever bout of shingles a year ago, of course a month after turning 50. It was fucking awful. About to get my first shot in a few weeks.
beccabebe@reddit
My second was AWFUL. I’d do it again. Shingles are bad!!!
Scifidelis@reddit
No issues with mine, just do it.
Repulsive_Dig_133@reddit
I'd consider it ( if we have it in the UK ). Never had chickenpox as a kid, but caught it off my kid in my 40s and it was horrible ( kid was ok :) ). Not sure if I can get shingles now - but I dont want to.
Rafterman2@reddit
I had no side effects at all, other than a slightly sore arm. Both shots.
old_motters@reddit
There's no way I want to experience shingles so I took the vaccine. I had a sore arm for a few days but that's about it.
AccountNumber478@reddit
My late mom got shingles rashes all over her shins. FWIW she found using freshly-used, warm tea bags soothed the pain somewhat.
GreenerMark@reddit
Sore arm only for me with both shots. And I know people who've had horrific experiences with Shingles that go on for years. Temporary side effects from the vaccine pale in comparison.
One_Barnacle2699@reddit
I had no issues for either dose, except for a mildly sore arm for a day.
This-Assumption4123@reddit
I just finished my second one a couple of weeks ago. My mom, a pharmacist, refused to get it and now she has shingles. She’s miserable. I tried to tell her.
Uncle_Brewster@reddit
I got both shots a couple years ago. Zero issues.
Eatmore-plants@reddit
Not only dots the shot prevent you from getting Shingles, the new research shows that it slows down dementia.
chouinkimm@reddit
Get the shot. End of story. Shingles is horrific. way worse than any vaccine
Big_Nas_in_CO@reddit
Got the first, sore arm nothing much. Second one is due at the end of the month. Will report back with my experience.
Russian_Doll_888@reddit
I had no issues except for a sore arm. I read that your response will be similar to what your chicken pox reaction was. If you had a mild to moderate case, then you'll probably have a mild reaction to the shot. If you had a severe case, then you might have a more severe reaction. Not sure there was a study, but it seems to correlate for a lot of people.
ChronoMonkeyX@reddit
My first shot had no effect at all, not even a sore arm. We'll see what happens with the second.
One of the first 2 covid shots really knocked me down for a day, I was expecting that. It is unpleasant, but it's hardly anything to dread, as long as you know its coming and are ready for it. They said 24 hours later you'd feel it. I got it at around 1pm, woke up the next morning feeling fine and went to work. Around 1pm that next day, it hit hard, and I realized they were were being rather literal when they said 24 hours.
digawina@reddit
Anyone not getting it, and risking getting Shingles, because they may feel icky for a day after that second shot, is a dumbass.
silvermanedwino@reddit
The shot is better than the shingles.
Street-Technology-93@reddit
💯
joeyGibson@reddit
The second dose of the shingles vaccine kicked my ass. It was awful. But you know what was 100x worse? When I had shingles. That was the worst pain I've ever experienced in my life.
Ok-Concert-6475@reddit
I got shingles when I was pregnant. It didnt clear up for a whole year. I couldn't take anything because I was pregnant/breastfeeding. Worst pain ever.
joeyGibson@reddit
Jesus... that's awful. Mine just lasted a few weeks, but it was agony.
siliconsmiley@reddit
Did you go blind?
Fortunately my case was very mild. Just a single patch along my ribs.
The scariest part for me was the face everybody made when I told them I had shingles and the andictdote they told about how somebody they knew went blind. Fuck me. Pure panic. Not many blind software developers out there in the wild.
joeyGibson@reddit
Uh... not that I'm aware of. But I did have the blisters on my face around my eye, and we were worried about it getting in my eye.
ptm93@reddit
Sore arm and extra tired were my symptoms.
ConnotationalRacket@reddit
I got the shingles vaccine. Last summer I got shingles IN MY EYE and I couldn’t see for days. If I hadn’t gotten the shot I could have lost my sight.
I thought it was pinkeye but it didn’t get better so I went in and urgent care sent me to the ophthalmologist immediately. I got high dose antivirals for like 10 days. Don’t fuck around, get the shots. If you think you have shingles go in ASAP for antivirals.
Silly-Shoulder-6257@reddit
Some people say that the second one was the bad one. That’s why I’m putting it off. Hoping that one is better than none.
BecauseISaidSo888@reddit
I just got my 2nd shot a couple weeks ago. All I had for side effects for both was a sore arm for a few days.
ConnotationalRacket@reddit
It totally depends. Some people have a mild reaction both times. For me the first one was rough but the second was a breeze. Get both shots for sure.
RightSideBlind@reddit
I had absolutely no response to either shot, so it's not guaranteed.
BecauseISaidSo888@reddit
I just got my 2nd shot a couple weeks ago. Sore arm was all I had for side effects.
atclew@reddit
The first one had me feeling pretty rough for about 36 hours, but at least I knew the vaccine was the reason why. Second shot is scheduled for July, no clue what’ll happen based on so many varied reactions.
ThatStarkGirl@reddit
OMG I need the shingles vaccine! I had chicken pox as a kid, and do NOT want shingles. Shit, I didn't realize I was old enough to worry about it until now! 😳
abstractraj@reddit
I only had a sore arm both times, but it was fairly painful
Historical-Composer2@reddit
My arm was pretty sore for a couple of days, but that was it for me!
GonnaGetRealWeird@reddit
Same. Even after the second.
Chief7064@reddit
I was fine, my wife was shivering and shaking all night. You never know.
Moody_GenX@reddit
I got shingles twice in my 40s. I was incredibly lucky that both were minor. Still got the vaccine at 50 and the 2nd shot was pretty bad the next day.
everydave42@reddit
As bad as the 2nd shot for me was, it was still FAR better than what I imaging shingles could be. I even have a personal point of reference: In my early 20's I had a very isolate case of it just above my eyebrow. There was slight concern that it might affect my vision but being isolate and me being young it resolved itself after a few weeks. But even that very limited experience was enough to convince me that a more traditional outbreak would be SO much more miserable than recovering from the vaccine that it was a non choice.
Even if the 2nd shot kicks your butt, you'll be through it in a few days and likely have far better changes of never having to suffer through shingles, which is a very easy trade off to make.
Melodic_War327@reddit
Honestly, I felt like crap for about a day. Nothing like what I'd have gotten if I had shingles. And that might be because I took the pneumonia vaccine at the same time.
lottadot@reddit
Go talk to someone whos' been through actual shingles once or twice. You'll be running to complete your shots.
MrPhyshe@reddit
I had the second jab last week and was a bit worried as the first one laid me low for a few days - kind of like a fast flu. This one was better, sore arm and I felt a bit rough and had an early night on the second day but then I was OK.
I do have a slightly compromised immune system due having undergone ASCT for cancer treatment; so I normally have some reaction to vaccines.
markallanholley@reddit
Between the two shots I was down and feeling like crap for a total of 5 days.
Would do it all over again. I was in line at Walmart Pharmacy the day after my 50th birthday. Shingles is no joke.
BenefitAdvanced@reddit
You are crazy NOT to get the shingles shot. It will be the biggest regret of your life if you wake up with it one day.
Scimmia_bianca@reddit
Sounds better than getting shingles. My mom said that was worse than childbirth or kidney stones.
macaronsandmurder@reddit
Please do it. I work in infectious disease and research is growing that the shingles vaccine can protect against dementia. There is some evidence that amyloid plaques in dementia and Alzheimer’s are driven by an immune reaction in the brain from the herpes zoster viruses that we all harbor. You’ll have a sore arm and feel flu-y but people are not showing ongoing vaccine injury and the protection is significant https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-026-69289-0
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
Mine wasn’t any worse than a flu shot.
ArtisticDistrict6@reddit
I never have vaccine side effects but I did with both shingles shots. I have taken care of some pretty gnarly shingles patients, including one who is probably the most horrific patient death I've ever been the nurse for- after autopsy was diagnosed as shingles in her brain. I'd get that shot every 6 months to avoid shingles
furbalve03@reddit
I was fine. No side effects.
OldSkooler1212@reddit
I got the first dose about a month ago on a Friday. It made me super sleepy. I went to bed about 8 PM and stayed in bed till about noon the next day. My arm was a little sore but not much.
salty_in_the_south@reddit
I had zero side effects
EstimateAgitated224@reddit
I was fine too. Piece of cake.
truthm0de@reddit
Had shingles at 30. Holy fuck did that suck. Thankfully i got it on my rib cage. I actually worked with a woman that got it in / around her eye. And I’m sure there’s some people out there that have gotten it around the genitals.
Pleasant_Studio9690@reddit
I heard horror stories about the second shot, but the first one hit me much harder. Second one I was just run down for 2 days.
AltSpaceCake@reddit
Just had my first one! I have lupus and am immunocompromised so I was very worried. But my doc would not relent. Shingles could actually lead to death for me if I were to get it and have to come off my meds to fight it. All I got was a very sore arm and weird bruises and red marks on my upper arm. I'll take it! Even if the second shot sucks, I'll deal. Also all the new info on the vaccine possibly reducing heart events and dementia makes it a no brainer
Remote_Read836@reddit
I had the Shingrix vaccine (2 doses). Aside from a bit of pain in the injection site for a few days, I didn’t have any side effects.

VirusOrganic4456@reddit
I had zero side effects from either shot. My husband was knocked on his ass for about 2 days from both of them. You never know, but either way it's better than getting shingles.
takotako577@reddit
That's the thing. Everybody responds differently. Some have no side effects at all and others are miserable. The first shot absolutely kicked my ass. Pretty high fever and all I could do was lay in bed under a ton of blankets shivering because I was so cold. Second shot. Not a damn thing. But no matter how you respond, it's nowhere near as bad as actually getting shingles, so get your damn shots!
Fresh-Anteater-5933@reddit
People are so weird about this. If you feel sick after, you have a fever. Take your favorite fever reducer and you’ll feel better
Darth_Bane-0078@reddit
No problems for me on either shot except sore arm.
jaynewreck@reddit
I was the same as you, I listened here and got myself all worked up. I got a sore arm with my first dose. No big deal.
I got anxious again as the second one approached. I made sure I did it on a Thursday evening of a three day weekend. I stocked up on soup, pulled out the heating pads, made no plans for the weekend other than suffering and... sore arm.
I wonder if it's because I've already had shingles several times? Whatever the reason, it wasn't a big deal for me.
SC_Elle@reddit
Same here, it was a big nothingburger. Like a flu shot. And I have never had shingles.
PubKirbo@reddit
I went in knowing nothing. I had zero reaction to the first shot and a terrible day of flu-like symptoms after the second shot. But I'll take a day of being horribly ill over getting shingles all day everyday.
My husband had zero reaction to either shot. Hopefully you'll be like him.
lovegood123@reddit
It kicked my ass but I was prepared. I got it the night before a non work day, made sure I had Tylenol and any goodies/books I I wanted and made a list of movies I wanted to see. I stayed in bed the next day and napped, snacked, read and watched movies. One day of feeling flu like is beyond worth not getting shingles.
