So, I'm 50 today...

Yesterday I received my first notice from AARP... sigh. What other fun things are in store for me now that I'm entering the second half century of my life?
NotEasilyConfused@reddit
They waited until you were 50?
RegularImpressive819@reddit
I was getting that AARP stuff at 30, but only because there was a elderly lady in town with the same name 😂 I prepared early.
StartKindly9881@reddit
61 and feel 40 - still have my hair and grew it past my shoulders and retired. Life is good.
CapaldiFan333@reddit
I guess when I turned 65 last September I started to get letters, actual letters on lovely stationery (and signed with a rubber stamped signature), from funeral homes and crematoriums. I had no idea there were so many crematoriums around here. Kinda creepy. We have everything written down and our lawyer has all of it along with our wills. From the "arrangements" to the music (no sad or hymns thank you). There's nothing else that needs done. Seeing as I am an organ dinir, there won't be much left of me to deal with!
As for the AARP, I remember getting those. I was averaging one a week. Each week's AARP packet, it was thicker than a letter, told me that, as a member, I would have premium offers like discounts for hotels, rental cars, and many other offers. Each packet offered a different freebie that they will send when they receive your paid membership. The freebies will have "AARP" emblazoned on them somewhere. I remember them offering a nylon duffle bag, a Jitterbug flip phone (you had to buy the service), an insulated trunk organizer, and a stadium blanket. You pay $15 - $20 for a membership, for a free gift that isn't worth what the membership costs. I contacted them through the phone number they showed. I asked the person who answered to please stop sending the letters. And... I kept getting them. Then they stopped for a month and they started again. I decided to write them an email. (My husband has kept a copy of it!)
"I have read through the information in the packet you sent me, but I'm not interested in being one of your voting block members. Also, for a non-profit, you ask your members for a lot of donations. I am also uninterested in being a constant stream of funds for your many projects you feel would be advantageous to the over 50 crowd. Thank you."
The email was ignored as I never received an answer to it. I had enough. I sent a change of address to General Delivery at a post office Chesapeake, not a post office in Virginia Beach. It took another month, but they stopped! I don't know if it was the COA or my email had finally got through to someone, all I know is they stopped. Hopefully, it will be easier to stop the letters from the funeral homes & crematoriums.
NMPapillon@reddit
I started getting informational mail from a cremation society.
GuitarHeroInMyHead@reddit
We get stuff from a local mortuary all the time 😂. Fuck those guys...I will be driving by their going out of business casket sale in 30 years!

Happy birthday. Started getting aarp stuff month prior to 50. I poop in a box and mail it.

Happy Birthday! I apparently don't actually exist as I'm 54 and still haven't heard from AARP.

50 is the big one. It’s hard to pretend you are young when you’ve been on the planet half a century. It’s sobering. But then you might only be halfway through your life. A lot still to go!

Not having the chicken pox does not preclude you from needing the shingles vaccine. I “never had chicken pox” however when tested for work my titer was up. Meaning I had chicken pox, but likely a mild enough case it wasn’t noticed (a couple of pox) and I had immunity. Unless you had a titer tested you should not forego the shingles vaccine. A provider telling you this should be referred to the CDC website or UpToDate.
azchocolatelover@reddit
I ended up only about 5 actual pox on my face, but still managed to ruin the family's camping vacation - we no sooner got to the campgrounds when I told Mom I didn't feel good, and we re-loaded the station wagon that we had started unloading, piled back in and headed home.
azchocolatelover@reddit
Time for that "free" preventive colonoscopy?

You may now be eligible to join your city's senior center, which is usually part of the parks and rec department. I'm turning 55 this month and have been eligible since I turned 50.
Useful_Humor_1152@reddit
Happy Birthday 55 gets you Seinor Citizens Discount in many places in the USA and you are now eligible to live in 55 and over communities!
Happy 50th! Birthday OP
librarykerri@reddit
I still have kids at home; can they live in a 55+ community with me? Lol. Actually, they're both young adults now. The honest graduates high school next year.
Useful_Humor_1152@reddit
Your kids can actually live in a 55 and over community in Florida. 😂 I don't know about other state laws. My now deceased parents lived in one. My parents were 40 years older than me. At least one person has to be 55 in the household. There are also inheritance laws. If your children are under 55 and they inherited your condo/house the 55 rule doesn't apply to them. They won't be forced to sell your property.
Empty nest usually means they will still show up at your door at some point. Even if it's just to do free laundry and get free food!

Yippy - Time for your Shingles Vaccine!
anti-ayn@reddit
That’s one I actually want now two years away. Other benefits besides.
Hows-It-Goin-Buddy@reddit
Hbd.
Shingles suck. Had that from work related stress around 40.
Due to health mess around 2022 I had both oscopies (mid 40s). On my bday. Worst birthday ever. And that colon super blowout med to empty out made me feel so horrible. Hope you have less side effects.
I'll be 50 soon enough. Haha and sigh.
Enjoy!
Butterfly-Wing1120@reddit
I don't get how you think you don't need shingles shot if you've never had chicken pox...it would seem to me you're more vulnerable. I would get the vaccines as you never want to get shingles
Guilty-Tie164@reddit (OP)
My doctor told me shingles is caused by a dormant virus left after one has had the chicken pox. Since I never had the chicken pox, I don't have that dormant virus and cannot get shingles. I've actually had 2 doctors tell me this.
QuestnsEverything@reddit
This is technically true. But, unless you have had your titers drawn to prove you have not had chicken pox you should still get the shingles vaccine. If you test negative for chicken pox then you should get the chicken pox vaccines. Chicken pox ca be deadly in adults and often result in hospital stays.
Doc-Milsap@reddit
Me too.

liftguy111@reddit
Don’t bother with AARP! The discounts are not very good compared to AAA and you WILL get 3 pieces of junk mail every day as long as you’re a member. Even the magazine is 65% ads for more insurance or phones with big buttons.
leeannw60@reddit
Thanks for the tip… I cannot stand the amount of emails and texts I receive from AARP… ugh
kmanix50@reddit
Yeah so AARP is totally worth it if you ever stay at chain hotels better than military or triple a discounts from my experience with Marriott chains branded locations. Coll guard is the 3 year solution for non-Colonoscopy tests if you are low risk. Ear hair and nose hair was my bid downfall and greying beard.
SinD2315@reddit
Happy Birthday!!! A colonoscopy is definitely a life saver as it’s one of the leading causes of death? Look it up. You ABSOLUTELY NEED THE SHINGLES VACCINE ESPECIALLY IF YOU’VE NEVER HAD CHICKEN POX!! I’m an RN-I’ve had shingles twice-and I had chicken pox as a child. Shingles is painful and debilitating-get the vaccine. Or suffer the consequences that is not remotely painless. The internet can be stupid-protect your older self. Vaccines are great-don’t believe the lies
Skip_Intro0401@reddit
Embrace the discounts! Especially in this economy.

Happy Birthday! You’ve now reached the “eff it, I can do what I want” stage of life, which ngl is amazing! Also, you’ve already had a couple people here say it, but I’m gonna reiterate: consider getting your shingles shot, anyway. Two of my (much younger) friends have shingles & it looks like someone poured hot lava on their skin when they have a breakout. (Yikes!) Neither of them had chicken pox when they were little, either. Not worth the risk, imo. Anyway- hope you have a fantastic day & welcome to the club! 🎉🥳👏🏻

50 is the new 30! My 50’s were some of the best years. Kids were gone, college was paid for! It was like we were back in our 20’s but had money!
No 60 on the other hand…. 😂
I looked at a picture of me with my grandfather when I was 20. I then did the math and realized I am only 4 years away from the age he was at that time. But I thought it’s completely different now.
He was sitting in a chair watching TV for years before that picture. Sedentary, overweight, heart surgery.
My wife and I work out most days. I can still jog 3 miles a day. I still teach SCUBA diving. We just did a 5 month trip across the gulf coast and south west.
There is still a lot more to do and I’m 10 years ahead of you.
Happy birthday relax, worry about getting old when you 80. Until then start checking of the bucket list items. You’re far from done yet.

I just finished the fifth cycle of the Chinese zodiac too and I got my Advanced Open Water Diving certification.

NicolleL@reddit
I said to someone else that I didn’t know whether to feel impressed or insulted 🤣 But yeah, less junk mail is always a plus. I own a multigenerational house with my dad and my sister and I’m third on the lease/mortgage (we had just did in order by age) but I think that makes me slightly invisible to the junk mail people because a lot of places it only shows the first two names. I get a lot less than I did when I owned my own townhome.
Neat-Ad11@reddit
Good point. I don’t think you’re missing anything with AARP, especially at 50. Most of the “deals” and things seem aimed at much older people or people with medical needs. It might be good for some, but I never chose to become a member.
no1oneknowsy@reddit
I joined AARP early...you can join at 18 just some of the benefits won't apply.
ridinderty@reddit
Curious, what benefits from being an AARP member have you taken advantage of?
ItBeMe_For_Real@reddit
Not OP but it’s a little like AAA. A lot of hotels, car rentals etc offer AARP discounts. They offer some other services too.
Last time I renewed was because a car rental was cheapest w/AARP discount, even after the annual membership fee.
no1oneknowsy@reddit
Discounts mostly: hotel, food, etc...Went to a free movie too I think that one could be age limited but no one checked id. I mean i guess i looked old enough. I got the idea from an online article suggesting more young people were using it as prices were high. I also think it helps with ageism to have younger Gen involved in advocating for older gens.
They also have insurance which I haven't used but my mom was considering dental since Medicaid/Medicare often doesn't cover that.

Sorry to say it, but brace yourself for relentless predatory junk mail (physical and email) and cold calls--funeral plans, step-in tubs, window replacement, home warranties, car warranty extensions (on 15yo cars), medicare plans...it never stops. The, um, other news: the AARP trunk organizer isn't super beefy or strong, but it did show me that a trunk organizer is a cool thing to have. Now I'm drooling over the Duluth Trading Company Trunk Commander.
If this happened already, your doctor will tell you that you now have to take a pill every day for the rest of your life because of a medical problem. This is actually good news, since the biggest problem your doctor sees in your health landscape is solved by taking one pill a day. The downside? There may be other issues your doctor finds later and you'll have more than one pill. (for the purposes of this paragraph, doctors are genuinely interested in your health as are the scientists who look to solve medical problems)
Also, whatever music you like, keep liking it. Nothing wrong with slapping a band sticker on the side of your CPAP machine; just don't block the intake.
Guilty-Tie164@reddit (OP)
I've had to take a pill everyday since I was 20 for my thyroid so that's not a biggie to me.
Koloyz@reddit
To be transparent: I started my daily pill in my 20s, too. Mine was for migraines. And it was a Red Green quote about having to take a pill daily that I paraphrased there--that quote helped me keep things in perspective.
ChessieChesapeake@reddit
I joined AARP on my 50th birthday. Damn right I’m taking advantage of the discounts. Can’t wait to get my lifetime National Park pass at 62.
Novagrl05@reddit
Happy birthday! Getting older is a privilege denied to many. Enjoy the ride!
tracerhaha@reddit
Don’t feel too bad. I’m named after my dad and when he turned 50 I started receiving mailers from AARP. Now I’m getting mailers for assisted living retirement communities.
Ok_Yellow1536@reddit
I’m 52 today, AARP mail gets trashed unopened.
Empty_Nestor@reddit
I’m 57 and recently retired. Just joined my local senior’s association because it has fantastic programs, an awesome gym ($20 a month) and a dining room run by a world-class chef serving up amazing meals for $12. Getting old is awesome!
Street-Technology-93@reddit
Steady physical degradation… you soon discover why it seemed like ‘old’ people always talked about their health. It’s everything.
OldSkooler1212@reddit
My brother who is 15 years older than me (in his early 70s) and in phenomenal shape pointed me to a group on FB called something like “Strong and over 70”. Unless you’ve got a disease that physically keeps you from being able to workout there’s no need to degrade enough to feel old. Eat right, exercise, and see your doctors regularly.
ljw1031@reddit
Happy birthday, welcome to 50. The quickness with AARP mail that showed once I turned 50 was mind boggling. I turned 50 this past Halloween and I swear by November 5th, I had stuff from them. I was not looking to turning 50 but I made it lol. It was interesting because I finally realized I needed to let stuff go. I found myself saying to my family, “look I’m 50 and I’m don’t have time or the patience to put up with this bullshit.” It was liberating and refreshing.
JediMasterKev@reddit
Age is just a number. NEVER let it get to you.
ELB74@reddit
Be positive! im 51 and here is what I am looking forward to:
Retirement planning
grandkids
financial freedom from my kids
more time/money for travel ( not paying for kids to join us and working around their schedule)
eventually sr discounts
staying active to be a fit older person so i can do all the above things :)
Emergency-Crab-7455@reddit
I notice they don't show them getting OUT of the clawfoot tub......there must be an engine hoist out of camera range.
Guilty-Tie164@reddit (OP)
Unfortunately I don't have kids or a retirement account.
ELB74@reddit
If you have access to a 401k at work maybe start that and take advantage of the catch up option that you can now contribute more since you are over 50.
Maybe find some hobbies . gardening, walking/hiking club, volunteer at local places that have a cause you are passionate about.
Early bird specials.. is that a thing really? But ill list it as people make it sounds like it is.
other then that you can look forward to more health screenings to hopefully help you prioritize YOU so you can be here longer and have a good quality of life.
What_if_I_fly@reddit
My neighbor was widowed at 36. AARP wouldn't stop pestering her for a while, until she wrote a very savagely pointed letter for their prepaid envelope.

Colonoscopy, shingles vaccine, skin cancer, sudden lactose intolerance, arthritis, sore back, losing the hair on your legs where your socks are (WTF is up with that), going to bed at 9:30, getting up at 5:30 with no need for an alarm, dinner reservations at 5:00, home by 6:30, I could go on and on. I’m 53 so I’ve been doing this for a few years.
TheFightens@reddit
Spot on. Don’t forget about the readers I needed to see what you typed.
Secret-Function-2972@reddit
Ugh. The readers. A must when I wear contacts.
Can't get away from glasses anymore whether my prescription progressive lenses or readers with contacts.
BlueAndMoreBlue@reddit
57 here and same except for back pain thank goodness. My ankles hurt almost all the time though so there’s that — I’m considering getting a cane. Perhaps one with a sword but definitely one with a stash spot :)

I’ve signed up with AARP in my 30s. You get access to the discounts just by being a member - no age requirement. You cannot get on their insurance policies until X age but everything by else is useable.
Emergency-Crab-7455@reddit
Junk mail for: test your hearing/hearing aids......"we buy homes/property" (I get 5 to 6 each week).....life insurance "for just pennies a day!".....free dinner to listen to estate planning (every single one, you must have at least $50,000 just sitting in a drawer).

Colonoscopy, and shingles shot.
You don’t want colon cancer or shingles.
mj6174@reddit
Get your colonoscopy done if not done already. Also Shingles shots.
Guilty-Tie164@reddit (OP)
Do I need the shingles shot if I've never had the chicken pox?
mj6174@reddit
Talk to your doctor. They will guide you but it's common protocol to have the Shingles vaccine after 50.
Guilty-Tie164@reddit (OP)
He said since I haven't had the chicken pox, I can't get shingles.
No_Age_8414@reddit
I didn’t think I had chicken pox as a kid, but wasn’t certain so they did a test and it turns out I had. I have chickened out on the shingles vax so far, but need to schedule one
Secret-Function-2972@reddit
As a 50th birthday gift my parents gave me an AARP membership. It's saved me some $ on rental cars so I renewed. *shrug*
Get a colonoscopy. And the Shingles vax. (Per a couple of people I know who have had Shingles, it suuucks.)

Sufficient_Stop8381@reddit
I got the axe two months after turning 50. 26 years service, steady promotions, never a bad review or even a write up of any kind. Corporate office started bouncing long termers in corp middle management for no reason because “at will employment state”. Over a couple years a few here a few there, I wasn’t the first but we were all over 50.

I was able to sign up for AARP somewhere in my mid 40s so that I could start getting hotel discounts! That's my advice to other people who haven't turned 50 yet here.

I got my AARP notice the day before turning 50 too! They really know how to demoralize us huh?! Hard pass on them though.
Your pcp will be badgering you to get a colonoscopy now.
If you don’t already own a wide variety of readers, that’s the next new fun thing to get.
Happy Birthday!
NicolleL@reddit
I turned 50 last October, and I’ve yet to see anything from AARP. I’m not sure whether to be impressed or insulted! 🤣
(I do have my colonoscopy scheduled and already got dose 1 of my shingles shot. I’m lucky enough that my prescription is so drastically different between my two eyes that I’ll probably never need readers [but I do have to hold whatever I’m reading up close but alternative would have to be prescription readers]. Maybe that’s how they find us—through our reading glasses purchases!)
earth_shine40092@reddit
You may be on to something! 😂
Fishyprediction@reddit
So the big question of the day! At what age do we actually join AARP?
doandroidsdreamx@reddit
I don’t know. I turned 50 and decided to get in shape. Now I’m 55 and in the best shape of my life (better than most guys in their 20s). I started making music again and writing a novel. I bought my own home and live alone. I have an excellent job in healthcare. For me personally, my 50s are by far the best decade so far. I plan for my 60s to be even better. I think it’s all about perspective. You can either take on the “oh I’m old now” mentality and accept a gradual decline in your abilities and joy. Or you can throw out the stereotypes and social constructs and live your life how you want.
therickfield@reddit
I turn 50 this year and actually have been a member of AARP for years - most of the travel discounts are not age restrictive so the membership pays for itself if you take advantage of the discounts.

Oh you’ll suddenly work out more because you realize you should have done so years ago and/or get a new regime because what you’ve been doing destroyed a part of your body.
The same thing goes for eating better.
Neither will forestall some part of your body basically breaking down over the next ten years. It’ll be unexpected just what malfunctions.
