Savagegeese circling the drain

viewership down? off-topic videos not hitting like you'd hoped? running out of clouds to yell at?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tc__OgBZ_I4
Mark is missing his obligatory "rattly ass 4 cyl" and "appliance-esq" complaints, so sorry for those missing out on the bingo board. I swear, Jack is the only one keeping that channel afloat now.
india2wallst@reddit
They are just feeding the YT algorithm with fresh content. Gotta admire them for the fact that they don't do drag races or other gimmicks to get viewership up.
Multifaceted-Simp@reddit
I have to look up savage geese, whereas carwow and autodriver are littered across my home page despite me never looking them up
SavageGeese@reddit
Bunch of haters in here we are the Youtube equivelent of G-Force the movie.
yobo9193@reddit
>G-Force the movie
Why does that movie have such a stacked cast for such a shitty premise?
On a more serious note, I like the direction the channel has gone over the years. Much more mature reviews than in the past while still hitting the technical highlights
dattroll123@reddit
prius vs prelude comparison when?
SavageGeese@reddit
End of April
hellooverlasting@reddit
I guess being in the YouTube business, ya’ll gotta have some thick skin. Then again, r/cars like the rest of the subreddit are like salt mines anyways full of people with pHD in seemingly endless of topics
LBBflyer@reddit
I quit watching after I watched their E53 review vs the M5 review. Both are plug in hybrids that weigh within a couple hundred pounds of each other. The M5 review did nothing but talk about the weight and make weight jokes while the E53 review made basically no mention of it. I don't know if it was a bias or if they just wanted to pile on the M5 weight narrative, but I was out after that.
dustygator@reddit
I think BMW has gotten more criticism (not just from SG but from other content creators & traditional media) over the heaviness of their cars because of their historical brand identity.
Of the big 3 German brands they were always the one that focused the most on making drivers cars while Mercedes was more renowned for technological ingenuity and build quality. The expectation of an M car is that it will be sharp, communicative and fun to drive. The expectation of an AMG is that it will be rowdy, aggressive and luxurious.
When M cars turn into fast luxo-barges, people will complain about the weight. When the interior of every Mercedes looks like a club and is full of creaky plastics & tech gimmicks, reviewers will focus on that rather than say steering feel.
zoned_off@reddit
> Mark is missing his obligatory "rattly ass 4 cyl" and "appliance-esq" complaints,
You're whining about an annoying thing that he didn't do in this video? Do you have an actual criticisms of the content of the video?
half_regard@reddit (OP)
I only bring it up because he mentions it with every other 4-cyl that gets uttered from his mouth. But viewership is down, so he's got these "technology bad" esq videos now, and you can even see how fucking board he looks in this video, he's trying so hard not to shit on the car and it's eminently obvious. Just gritted teeth, the fake laughs, etc. He doesn't even put the car up on a lift, just does some engine pano shots and calls it a day.
Astramael@reddit
Unless it’s a Honda, then it’s an amazing 4 cylinder!
hi_im_bored13@reddit
i thought they shit relentlessly (rightfully) on the 1.5t
it's just the series hybrid system & type r portrait which are good, which is true, & likewise with the eCVT toyota systems, which they do praise almost as much
SavageGeese@reddit
You troll us so hard, what is it that you need to make it all good?
half_regard@reddit (OP)
buddy, this isn't trolling
SavageGeese@reddit
You literally only post to trash talk, it's the definition of trolling. Now is the time for productive discussion.
Puzzled_Region_9376@reddit
I know you won’t get actual helpful discussion. But I find it extremely commendable that you came to interact and were willing to listen speaks highly of your character.
The feedback I would provide as a longtime fan a reduction in the ai content (It’s current decisiveness aside, your production is so top tier that it counterintuitively makes anything AI generated stick out incredibly hard) and I’d urge perhaps looking into the automotive back catalog that exist. No enthusiast looks around today and is thrilled with what’s going on. But that doesn’t mean it’s over, plenty of amazing things have already been made I would love your deep dives into those “classics” or “hits”of a bygone era.
half_regard@reddit (OP)
No, that's just called shitposting, lord help me
DooceBigalo@reddit
just how board is he?
half_regard@reddit (OP)

xlb250@reddit
Aren’t 4-cyl rattle boxes though? I feel that it’s fair to mention. Just had an X3 rental with B48 and the engine definitely ruined the “luxury” experience.
OnlineIsNotAPlace@reddit
wrong.
pokerawz@reddit
I personally find myself watching less and less car content. Maybe it’s all the uncertainty in the world, not sure. Could also just be that’s cars themselves are getting less & less interesting. I do prefer savagegeese more than any other car reviewer, I enjoy their technical knowledge and have learned a lot about the mechanical aspects of these cars. I just don’t really care about $100k Mustangs and $200k Corvette’s, but I get it there’s only so many Sienna’s & GTI’s you can talk about.
Skensis@reddit
There are a few car channels I still really like, usually it's some sort of repair/DIY stuff with more normal cars and stuff.
All the super high end stuff is cool and all, but at some point I just sort of stopped caring.
walnut100@reddit
I watch a lot more car content now but I've shifted into repair/garage type stuff.
I can afford higher end cars now and, while I adore my EV sedan, I've come to the conclusion that this level of quality doesn't exist in an EV SUV and I'm going to pick up another ICE vehicle. The garage content covers the craftsmanship and engineering so I can see what I'm getting into.
madevilfish@reddit
I also have pretty much stopped watching car content. When I was younger it felt like if I can just do X, Y, and Z. I can afford a 911, M3, or whatever. Now that I have done X, Y, and Z, someone moved the goal posts. Those same cars are still out of reach and they don't interest me as much because I still can't buy them. Car content doesn't appeal to me if I have no chance of owning the cars.
On the other hand I understand the content to brings in the views are the $200K + cars.
WoodpeckerExternal78@reddit
I feel so seen! Was starting to feel like the only one.
AnonymousEngineer_@reddit
I think that this happens to a lot of car enthusiasts. By the time you can afford the really sweet cars you wanted as a kid, you have all kinds of responsibilities meaning that even if you could buy the car, the angel on your shoulder is telling you that you could do other things with it.
Either that or you're feeling so bummed out and burned out by spending several decades in full time work that the prospect of retiring earlier is more enticing than the M3 or 911.
madevilfish@reddit
Being “into cars” is a hobby, and when you’re priced out of the hobby you have to find something else :/
withsexyresults@reddit
It’s still possible no? It’ll just have be an older m3 911 etc
madevilfish@reddit
You’re not wrong. I could still buy an older 911 or M3. The prices are kind of hard to justify. 996s are creeping into the 50k mark and a best 997 is still 50k car.
withsexyresults@reddit
Atleast m3s depreciate a lot
boomerbill69@reddit
Even then, not like they used to. I had multiple friends buy sub-$10k E36 M3s, some of them even being decently clean. E90s and newer never got to that point and I sure as hell wouldn't want to try and keep a $10k E90 on the road anyway, while the E36 wasn't that intimidating to do so.
cubs223425@reddit
The lack of interesting cars is the problem for me. I found the TLX Type S, IS 500, and CT4-V Blackwing to be cars that I liked and wanted to see in action. I do not care that much to see a slew of hypercars, a few EVs that cost $70K+ to basically be a beta tester of a new platform, and SUV videos trying to convince me the future isn't THAT boring.
The stuff I want to buy id barely being made, and the few things I can pick from are either being retired to set to unreasonable prices as they progress. I don't care to see a $60K+ Charger built on an EV platform drag race a $70K+ BMW or Audi that much.
dk00111@reddit
There’s definitely been a lull in middle class enthusiast oriented cars. The most recent one was the Prelude, which was a bit of a bust, and there’s nothing really on the near horizon.
FeemBleem@reddit
Middle class malaise.
narcistic_asshole@reddit
The overall state of the automotive industry isn't great right now... Most OEMs are trying to weather the storm right now and enthusiast vehicles are a lower priority for most of the big companies at the moment
DarthJezza@reddit
GR is our only hope. Celica, mr2, new Supra, maybe new 86.
SizeableFowl@reddit
Fully agree, even when I play racing games I’m much more interested in driving cars that are reasonably attainable than hopping in a virtual Ferrari.
I think the real issue is twofold:
First, car prices are insane; new or used. When Ford first launched the coyote v8 in the mustang you could go get a stripper spec V8 mustang for $30k iirc. Now that amount of money doesn’t even buy a base model Mustang. Or even a miata, and that’s not a dig against the miata its just the reality that cars, in general, feel relatively more expensive and everyone who cares is feeling that and that makes it hard to justify the purchase of something (especially when buying new, so you can vote with your wallet) that sacrifices utility.
The second is that manufacturers, in the last decade or so, seem hellbent on pursuing performance accessibility at the cost of all else. In a vacuum, this is a fine concept, but for enthusiast vehicles it’s the antithesis of what enthusiasts actually want, which is to be involved in the process.
SnowDucks1985@reddit
I like your take and I agree with most of it, I only watch SavageGesse and Sarah-N-Tuned for this reason. Sarah especially gets into the nitty gritty engineering mechanics that make me feel like I’m learning something about a car, as opposed to feeling like a sales pitch a dealership paid for.
But yea, we’re definitely in a new era of cars. One that’s way more bland and uninspiring than even a decade ago. The really fun cars are simply out of reach with how expensive everything is
DarthJezza@reddit
I agree with this. I used to watch these videos often. Topher, savage, even straight pipes. I haven’t watched one of these videos in probably over a year. I don’t give a shit about another 911 or c8 iteration, or about another $70k fwd-based family hauler with two big screens and squeaky plastic. I’ll be excited when Toyota comes out with some new GR products. Who else is making anything interesting now though? It’s all the same
Hnry_Dvd_Thr_Awy@reddit
You okay, bro?
Mimical@reddit
I watched the review,
It was concise, straight to the point in the technical stuff and the commentary on the vehicle was what I would be looking for if I'm in the market.
It's a good review.
half_regard@reddit (OP)
It's okay to have opinions, bro
mandatoryclutchpedal@reddit
I enjoy savage geese...unless its "we sat down with the engineers and now is 15 minutes of boring "I dont care" conversation and charts. It's essentially marketing material and not useful.
Mark and Jack work well together and I appreciate their approach.
I think they put together the most polished amd comprehensive car reviews.
Throttle house wins over entertainment.
Sarah n tuned does it great job covering mechanical bits at times.
Doug demuro used to be awesome going over interiors that no one has been able to replicate. What it's actually like to sit and live with a car. Then it took a nose dive. The cars covered were dull, it seemed repetitive and I rarely visit. It was the great when he cover quirky and interesting cars. Generic luxury and hypercars are not that interesting.
Topher and Tedward are for relaxing enjoyment of the driving experience.
RCR...it had its moment in time and I do try and go back but damm
RAM_AIR_IV@reddit
Really, to me the engineer talks are my favorite part because almost no other channel goes as indept as them
mandatoryclutchpedal@reddit
I get it. I understand the appeal.
Lorenzo_Blow@reddit
Mark's sexual attraction to Honda products and the AI slop has got so old.
hellooverlasting@reddit
Remind me what is their connection with AI slop?
IllustriousSteam@reddit
I guess it’s just that time again when r/cars turns on another car YouTube channel. Doug and RCR used to be popular on here a while ago.
BrandonNeider@reddit
Subreddit is just a giant soap box now, less car enthusiasts and more armchair car guys
TheReaperSovereign@reddit
Guess throttle house is next.
IllustriousSteam@reddit
Quite possible once their season of the Grand Tour releases. Maybe not right away, but Reddit often shifts opinion when [insert thing] becomes too successful.
cubs223425@reddit
It's not just about success though. Doug had a tendency to get a lot of details wrong as he grew, then he decided to prop up a car sales platform. Once the channel turns into a big brand and starts operating with big brand scale and ideals, it's usually doing so in contrast to what the core fans liked to make them popular.
762_54r@reddit
No I still think they're great and are one of my go-to sources when I need to research a car or soothe my cortisol flooded brain with the dulcet tones of middle aged men while I eat doritos and monster energy on my lunch break in my 1997 Toyota Camry.
half_regard@reddit (OP)
i feel attacked
Bradymyhero@reddit
Tell me where SG touched you
RodRAEG@reddit
I like how OP is driving the narrative so there's no discussion on here about the actual car in the review. Bunch of crotchety grumpy people in here. I like the current Prius, though. Never thought I'd say that about a Prius.
JBoy9028@reddit
It seems like OP just wanted them to shit talk the car and was angry that the main talking point of the video is that the Prius is a fine well put together car.
half_regard@reddit (OP)
False. The Prius is an amazing car technologically speaking, and an excellent vehicle for most people. I'm shit talking Mark, mostly.
flugherbutter@reddit
I just stopped watching them after the 50th unfunny ai generated joke segment
Mogwire@reddit
Savagegeese is proof that high quality video and audio won't make up for boring content.
Mark is an extremely tough watch, in my opinion. I often found myself skipping his parts to get to Jack.
Mark has never been compelling and made me want to come back. I often think he would be someone I'd regret having a conversation with.
noSSD4me@reddit
Mark just looks a bit burned out. After over a decade of top tier effort putting out such incredibly thought-out and high quality videos, I can see one getting tired and losing the motivation to keep going with the same level of effort. I still watch them, but the theme of their videos even for me is getting a little bit boring. I agree with another commented that Jack's enthusiasm is what's keeping them relevant right now. If Jack leaves, I don't think the channel survives for long...
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
I completely agree with everything you're saying. I commented with something similar elsewhere in this thread. I've noticed a difference in the last 4-5 years with Mark.
jrileyy229@reddit
Who cares? Why would you ever watch a review of a Prius unless you're seriously considering buying one?
You already know everything you need to know about it before watching the video.
half_regard@reddit (OP)
Because it has some actually interesting tech that's worth talking about.
humdizzle@reddit
its alot of 'old man yells at clouds' type stuff. And i think most people could care less about a deep technical dive on the new hyundai or honda whatever. i mean its great if you are actually purchasing a vehicle, but for just general car enthusiast type stuff its a bit drab. It seems like alot of car youtubers are turning away from car content / filming and doing podcasts where they answer viewer questions and discuss headlines
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
It's couldn't care less.
DoublePostedBroski@reddit
I stopped watching him years ago. The insufferable attitude and whining was just too much for me.
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
I still watch his videos, albeit not all his videos these days. But I will say that 5+ years ago his reviews felt more genuine, more in depth, and less goofy. If you watch a review of his from let's say 2019, you can easily see the difference compared to the stuff he does today. It's quite noticeable.
Altruistic-King199@reddit
Their best pieces are either super enthusiast centered or engineering deep-dive focused, but in order to pay the bills and maintain relationships, they have to pump out content from the usual press fleet like any other auto-youtuber.
When they review everyday non-enthusiast cars their content is boring elder-millenial cringe because they don't really have to do much work to be journalists, and I think they know that too.
Mark needs to yap way less when asking people questions and give them more room to talk.
If they are circling the drain, it's a symptom of a greater macroeconomic conditions and greedy auto manufacturers slowly killing off the entry-level enthusiast car market (which died with the Civic type R being 50k)....
RoyShavRick@reddit
Their big car reviews are still awesome but some of their more common car reviews end up being a little bit one note and all seem to have the same type of complaints.
But I don't think they are circling the drain. The channel is still pretty fun to watch now and then. It's a little long occasionally but they have solid content.
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
Wait I’m confused are you happy or mad that they didn’t say that?
Seems like you’re complaining that they didn’t do the things you dislike…
Carfr33k@reddit
If I have to hear jack groan on about CVTs again...haha like 10 years ago.
OwnPermission95@reddit
This channel has always been a pretentious poopooer
Brazen-Badger@reddit
Algorithm says we need another video on how tech is ruining cars. And another on how cars are too expensive to lust after.
half_regard@reddit (OP)
meanwhile at SG HQ: here's another $100k+ sports car we're going to blow our wad over, do multiple in depth videos, having the mfg fly us out to do track days, etc. for a car that 95% of us will never set foot in, yet here they are with some fluff piece about a 5 year old prius
"we're still relevant guys! guys?!"
SledgexHammer@reddit
The guy makes some real high quality content but I just cant sit through his boring ass super mellow fart sniffy soapboxes. I respect what he does but its like putting on a 4 hour nature ASMR video.
machosalad06@reddit
This is exactly how I feel. If they have something I’m interested in, I’ll fast forward and watch the 2 of 30 minutes that’s actually interesting to me.
Lamborghini4616@reddit
I'm tired of the AI slop "joke" segments they do
