Every time I see a taco with a camper like that I start to wish I went that route instead of a topper and RTT. I wanted to be able to take the tent off, but in all honesty⦠how often am I gonna do that? lol why not just get the camper jacks and pay $40/mo for a storage spot down the street during winter. š¤¦āāļø
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
I started with the cross bars in the bed and an RTT and quickly didnāt like not having my gear underneath in the bed more secure and more protected from the PNWās moisture. I have a buddy who had one of these on his truck and got to check it out first hand, but the cost was a barrier. I found a guy down in SoCal who was selling his at a very significant discount from new and picked it up. It never comes off of my truck and hasnāt been an issue to using my truck in other normal ways so far for me. Iāve had the camper on for almost 2 years now and do not regret it at all, itās been perfect for my needs!
SignificantOption349@reddit
Glad to know itās not an issue just keeping it on. Thereās a smaller company near me that has them for about $5500 and they seem to be pretty good quality, especially at that price. I just got my topper from them and already wishing I had just done the camper. Iāll have to see what I can do with swapping stuff around. Kinda annoyed I didnāt just get the better option right away, but for now my stuff is secure and dry, and Iāve got what I need. Definitely going to upgrade though
PonyThug@reddit
See if you can trade in yours for the better one. They could sell it used
SignificantOption349@reddit
True. They donāt have the exact one I want in stock right now, otherwise Iād sell it on marketplace really quick and go get it lol. Weāre going on a 3 week trip in June that Iād love to have that for!
Iāll probably sell my setup right after and go with the full camper tbh. It just makes more sense. Like honestly, how often am I going to take the tent off? lol and with the topper and cross bars, etc itās a taller setup than a camper. Kinda silly imo. Especially when we use it as much as we do.
Iām just now transitioning to a RTT from bed camping. The wife is claustrophobic and tbh I got annoyed with her tossing and turning in the bed lol. A taller tent should at least help. But now I went with this set up and pretty sure Iād be happier if I just spent the extra money. Especially with getting a dog into the tent lol
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
It looks like you still have to use a ladder to enter the tent. Something to consider. When I have my AT Overland Habitat open I can stand up in my bed to change, etc as the tent folds open vs the clamshell, no ladder involved. This may seem like a big deal but itās a feature I really like. But I think it looks like you can remove a panel in the Wonderfox Lair to accomplish the same thing, is that right?
SignificantOption349@reddit
It has a pass through. You just have to select the model to see it. It might come with a ladder for side entry if you wanted to go that way, but it has the bed pass through
PonyThug@reddit
Pass through is the reason I want a camper style. I sleep in my truck topper/bed and itās great 95% of the time. But Not having to move all gear out of the way would sometimes be really nice. Usually I donāt mind and prefer the hard sided sleeping enclosure
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
Itās a great feature for sure!!! From the pics it does not look like a bad way to go.
SignificantOption349@reddit
Oh yeah having that room and access would be great! Iām not super excited about trying to get my dog up there either. Going through the bed would be nice for everyone involved haha
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
My buddy has two that jump up there with himšš¤£
SignificantOption349@reddit
It would be a lot easier if he wasnāt old with busted up shepherd hips but thatās what Iām workin with. Heās not staying behind. I would just get him those ladder inserts but he has a tough time with actual stairs. Heās getting up either way but it would be another bonus to the pass through
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
I get it
SignificantOption349@reddit
Oh hey nice 1/4 sticker š¤ at least I assume itās yours. I was just a basic bitch 0331 but it caught my eye
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
I was an 0331 with Alpha 1/4 back in the late 90ās. We were a boat company back then, before MARSOC was a concept.
SignificantOption349@reddit
Your set up looks super spacious! That thing really packs a lot of stuff in there!
Iāll admit when I pulled up to the wanderfox shop and saw the lair I immediately texted my wife and said I shoulda bought the bigger setup lol. They look nice in person too.
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
Do it bro, sounds like you are already there.
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
Def dude! Just donāt settle if you are going this route, check reviews of all of them and see what works for you. You for sure donāt want to spend a lot of money on these and then not be happy. Whatās the company near you named.
SignificantOption349@reddit
The company is Wanderfox. They have some mixed reviews but my experience with them so far has been great. After putting my current topper together and having it on for a minute I think most complaints have just been them working through the early stages of QC, and some customer laziness lol. If you donāt want to do the work of putting it together you can have them assemble it the right way.
Customer service is insanely good in my experience and the topper itself is great! Id just rather have the camper set up.
Iāve kept my eyes peeled for others online and havenāt seen many that would match the price/ quality ratio. Or they donāt fit a 6ā tacoma bed
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
Those arenāt bad looking, kinda of like a Smartcap set up plus the tent.
SignificantOption349@reddit
Yeah theyāre honestly a pretty good setup. Definitely a smaller company and still growing but all the more reason for me to buy from them⦠especially when their customer service is how it is. I got the wrong panel in my package and they had one waiting for me when I pulled up the next day. Made it super quick and easy for me. I have faith theyāre willing to fix any issue on their end without question

How do you like off-roading in AZ compared to the PNW?
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
Hmmmm. Iād say iām pretty equally satisfied. I grew up in Tucson so Iām pretty familiar with desert off-roading and what to expect. Like AZ the PNW has a lot to offer and variety that Iām still exploring. It can def be more wet and muddy and Iāve done more water crossings in the PNW but the experience really isnāt that much different, maybe more greenery. The biggest difference Iāve personally experienced is the coastal dunes and beach runs, itās a lot of fun. AZ def has wash runs for the sand play but itās not like the big dunes, I suppose you can get that in Yuma though.
AceOfClubzs@reddit
Sick build dude!
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
Thank you!!! Itās been a great and fun truckš¤š½
Greedy_Street_891@reddit
Noice. We camped near area I think. Picacho Peak. Amazing. Kept saying: āHow is the sky so big compared to home?!ā
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
I saw that on the gps map but canāt remember exactly where it was. Yeah the sky really opens up in the desert. I grew up down in Tucson and as a kid we would lay in the back of the truck at night and be at awe!
Greedy_Street_891@reddit
Iām front Toronto, Canada. When I look up I see buildings lol.
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
Hahaha, urban overlandingš¤š½
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
Note, there is another Picacho Peak between Tucson and Phoenix.
Greedy_Street_891@reddit
Ah. That may have been it. Either way it was magic.
CrayonMayon@reddit
Ever been to Montana? Turns out "big sky country" is incredibly apt. I'm not sure how it works, but it feels huge!
Greedy_Street_891@reddit
Itās on the list Montana and Colorado. Forsho.
FrostyPause3610@reddit (OP)
I have several times and the name matches the sky there for sure!!!
Narrow_Garbage_3475@reddit
Which lights do you have? Those look exactly what I would like to have on mine. Thx
