Macron : “no fair, didn’t they understand that I am the new De Gaulle? I am cool, I am fun, I run, I put on sunglasses, I spend tons of money on make up and coms setting, and everyone should want to be my friend… Why does the world say Sanchez is better? He doesn’t even have a little soldier on his desk nor nuclear power…”
Let’s see if the movement starting in Europe to close airspace and base access takes energy and grow…
No to war.
Prestigious_Ad572@reddit
France has no US base, does not allow US planes to go through its airspace, opposed going to Irak in 2004, withdrew from Nato’s integrated command in 1966, and developed its own nuclear deterrence then. Not a fan of Macron but France baise ouais!
blobofhope@reddit
1/ I said Macron not France these things would never have happened 25 years ago when we had presidents with spines
Prestigious_Ad572@reddit
Letting an ally use your base is very different from letting an ally set up a base inside your country. Look at a map of US bases in the world to see what I mean. French bashing might be a trend but it’s not the reality. Also you probably need to go back to De Gaulle for any leader with spine.
blobofhope@reddit
Well De Gaulle did see it coming… but Chirac with De Villepin were capable of saying no to the Iraq war.
You might be ok with french bases being used in an illegal war but I am not, and Spain is clearer on that, this isn’t french bashing it is simply the truth.
Finally, I never said France had US bases on its territory you are pivoting to a parallel topic to try and create ambiguity.. exactly the type of things which are exhausting from some politicians.
Thanks for making my point there.
Stubbs94@reddit
Apparently French ships have passed through as well
blobofhope@reddit
Yes that’s true apparently one boat did pass. Unclear on the conditions behind the passage. There was a supposition that they paid a toll fee, no idea of what is true there tbh.
Prestigious_Ad572@reddit
Probably because Iran wants to make a statement about diplomacy : it gets you safe passage to not be belligerent.
blobofhope@reddit
Or France just paid a toll. Or Japan did or something else. I honestly don’t know.
Ironlion45@reddit
It was a bit of an embarrassment for him when an infosec breach revealed France's aircraft carrier off the coast of Turkey just days after he vigorously denied that France would get involved in the situation.
But it was the only real option. Any appeasement of the Iranian regime is usually just rewarded with ore chicanery.
blobofhope@reddit
I missed this one, but let’s be honest his presidency is a string of embarrassments… how he manages to maintain such positive press and international reputation is beyond me.
Prestigious_Ad572@reddit
He doesn’t have good press in France.
blobofhope@reddit
Hence international.
HockeyHocki@reddit
Uhh which world? Maybe for the far left bubble world on anime_titties. European leaders certainly dont say it and within Spain Sanchez is despised. His socialist party have been on the take and are gonna be consigned to the dustbin in next year's elections
Luzita3@reddit
In the polls they aren't that far vehind the right wing party
Funnily enough Macron's party will lose hard next european's elections and presidentials in favour of the left; the radical left and sadly the far-right
But yeah tell me again how blowing up with one's country is way better than the help Sanchez has been giving its people...
HockeyHocki@reddit
They've been behind for 2 years straight. Additionally the third most popular by huge margin is Vox, a far right party that will form a coalition with PP if needed.
blobofhope@reddit
His poll numbers don’t seem to agree with you.. Spain is fiercely antiwar, and last I saw in case of an election tomorrow he would comfortably be ahead…
As for European leaders, yes indeed that’s a little bit what I am saying 😉
HockeyHocki@reddit
What are you on about, his party are trailing PP pretty much every single poll taken the last two years
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_for_the_next_Spanish_general_election
blobofhope@reddit
68% of the spanish people don’t want this war, he was at 26% in nov 24 and is now above 40% approbation of his actions if I remember well…
Paradoxjjw@reddit
Lmao, far left bubble, let me guess you're someone that considers hitler too far left for your tastes.
HockeyHocki@reddit
Good job reinforcing my point, the far left are famous for characterising anyone to the right of them as nazis
Paradoxjjw@reddit
Did i hurt your feelings?
HockeyHocki@reddit
You hit your head? I literally just told you those accusations are meaningless coming from the far left
Paradoxjjw@reddit
Yeah I definitely seem to have hurt them.
ChillAhriman@reddit (OP)
Sánchez has been on a tight position for a few years, but every time he opposes Trump, he gains another 1% in the polls.
If Trump ends up conducting a land invasion of Iran, Sánchez will win the next general elections by a landslide even if he continues to do nothing to fix housing prices, just by virtue of being the opposition candidate against Trump (you can't beat these many layers of irony).
PaoloCalzone@reddit
Funny anecdote: Pepe le Pew in France has an Italian accent. Now, it's time he changes to a Spanish one!
blobofhope@reddit
Great now I have to add “check Pepe Le Pew’s accent in a French video” to my list of things to do 😅
Upbeat_Commission124@reddit
the art of winning:
just being moral and having the backbone to say no to the epstein regime
I-Here-555@reddit
Funny how that works. Almost all other European leaders have bent over backwards not to anger Trump. They pointedly ignored the blatant violations of international law and well-established rules and conventions, the same ones they've been lecturing about loudly for decades.
glowinggoo@reddit
I don't want to hear a Western country talk about fairly mild stuff as human rights violations again in my lifetime.
I-Here-555@reddit
The hypocrisy is way over the top and undeniable after the Iran war... but stuff like human rights does matter, in a non-cynical sense.
loggy_sci@reddit
Russia and China were both against Israeli action in Gaza but did nothing. But they aren’t considered hypocrites. People in the sub will demand European nations literally go to war over Gaza but will lose their fucking minds if anyone even suggest China do anything besides talk.
cesaroncalves@reddit
Europe and Russia provide material and political support to Israel, China does not.
glowinggoo@reddit
Human rights mattering is exactly why the Western nations have lost all moral capacity to talk about it. We need a better framework for it, not that I think one can be set up in the current state of the world.
snowflake37wao@reddit
Better parenting is the framework, the state of the world frames it as parents work 1/3 of their life, sleep 1/3 of their life, do life 1/6 of their life, live life 1/6 of their life, and what do you mean you need a nap this was the parent 1/6 of your life part tho you cant nap when youre dead wait wait before you go out. have another kid would ya. we need more indentured servants to replace yall from things like exhaustion and murder by kids struggling to survive who YOU didnt parent good enough because you needed a nap! — signed current framework
JanB1@reddit
I do not condone the behaviour of other European leaders, but of course they also always have to keep in mind the economy in their country and things like energy and food supply. Some country leaders can't in good conscience afford (yet) to do or say what they would probably like to do and/or say in regards to the US because of decades of economic dependence or dependence in another way.
You have to keep in mine that those European leaders ultimately have to make decisions with their whole country in mind, and also international diplomacy in mind.
BasedBalkaner@reddit
I guess not being a genocidal freak has it benefits, better than other European Vassal states

You‘ll have a hard time finding any european country without genocidal or at least deeply disturbing history.
Still, in this conflict Spain stands out for doing the right thing.
nicethingslover@reddit
Hard to find any country really if you go back long enough. Which one doesn't have huge bouts of violence somewhere in their history?
CoffeeWorldly9915@reddit
If it's just violence: none. If it's just about genocide: Cuba comes to mind. The only genocides known were ever done by the colonial side.
Blue__Agave@reddit
aka recorded history stops in the 1600's
loggy_sci@reddit
Once again I sincerely beg people to understand that European nations aren’t U.S. vassals, they just have overlapping interests and a shared history of cooperation to varying degrees. The U.S. doesn’t have vassals except for maybe states like Micronesia.

Meanwhile, Merz' strategy is being Trump's 2nd biggest fanboy, in the hopes that he gets preferential trade treatment from the US, which is a genius strategy because Trump is known for repaying favours, being consistent and generally caring for anything other than his own ass.
Let's see whose industry does better.
Taviii@reddit
Merz isn’t sucking up to trump.. they just both share the same handlers.
kaptainkooleio@reddit
Maybe Merz should gift Trump a $400 million plane like the Qataris since that worked out so well for them.
defel@reddit
Maybe american people can do a regime change?
YourFuture2000@reddit
And Germany too...
new_name_who_dis_@reddit

Does he want those coloured cue cards from Merkel's era? The ones that explained why you can't make a trade deal with just one European Union country.
knuppan@reddit
The 1st position goes to Rutte? What a fucking disgrace he is
aykcak@reddit
Unfortunately Wilders of Netherlands is doing the same
knuppan@reddit
Sounds like a typical feature of right-wing populists; thrash immigrants, suck Trump-dick
ComprehensiveProfit5@reddit
It's not Trump. It's Satanyahu. The German chancelor is a foreign agent, defending another nation's interests. He said it himself:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_support_for_Israel_in_the_Gaza_war
Jaquemart@reddit
Merz knows better than you that he cannot get any preferential trade treatment, since the EU negotiates as one.
Merkel had to explain this to Trump. Eleven times.
Anxious_Katz@reddit
Lol, the German economy is going down the drain as we speak. They lost the automobile market, everything indicates that we were in a recession last year and are now heading into an energy market with already high unemployment. It's gonna be great!
Meanwhile the population is aging rapidly, the birth rate have been abysmal since the 2000s and the braindead conservative government stated they plan on deporting 800,000 Syrians migrants. It's almost like a sociatal collapse speed run!
Curun@reddit
Good thing they rejected nuclear energy and doubled down on fossils
Anxious_Katz@reddit
Better yet, they were on track for a green energy renewal. Now all stipends and credits are getting scrapped because the economy minister is bought and paid for by the fossil industry!
Lifekraft@reddit
Tbf the cuck chair you can find in some hotel room was designed originally for the german government. They swallow american cock for already 30 years. It isnt going to change soon apparently.
Anxious_Katz@reddit
West Germany was designed to be bullwark against the Soviets. The current German state being a continuation from that also continued the traditional. At times they were on the cuck chair but right now they're not even there. They're told to wait patiently in the hotel lobby till Trump is done with their wife. The wife is the economy in this analogy.
What is your expert opinion on this?
Patentsmatter@reddit
Regarding the unemployment rate, that's not exactly true. There are 3 Mio people registered as looking for work (6%). The number has not significantly changed from last year.
But regarding energy, we have a minister or Economics who, being a former board member of a fossil fuel conglomerate, just wrings her hands and hopes that new nuclear power plants will solve our current problems in 30 years - while actively sabotaging renewables in the meantime.

And he was rather transparent about him being in favor of the US
RichardsLeftNipple@reddit
I mean if the Germans gimped themselves out for Putin all those years under Merkle. Why wouldn't they gimp themselves for Trump?
Anavarael@reddit
Not possible for countries neighbouring Russia - we will need to switch away from US military tech before we can start doing something similar. And considering how many of our politicians (at least here in Poland) are stubborn old bricks who cannot comprehend that US is not a reliable ally anymore, it will take some time...
I-Here-555@reddit
Nobody is blaming Estonia for not standing up to Trump. France or Germany, on the other hand...
nosecohn@reddit
The first countries to recognize that a US-led NATO is already a dead concept will benefit the most coming out of this war. The ones who fight to maintain the status quo will end up without both oil and security.
Eventually, the Europeans are all going to figure out that they themselves, perhaps with Canada, will be responsible for their defense, and that the US cannot be counted on for that any longer. Spain is the first domino.
NezumiAniki@reddit
Fence sitters trying to be neutral don't deserve good things, so it's great.

Trump manages to make EU countries more aligned with Iran than with US.
Just Wow.
words1918@reddit
It will be interesting to see what happens to them if indeed Iran wins this thing. Suppose they decisively humiliate the US. Do you think they go back to the old Iran or do you think they decide if we can beat them we can beat these around us? I guess I wonder how benevolent Iran will be with no real opposition in the region.
kieranjackwilson@reddit
To do that they would have to win militarily, and that’s not happening. And even if it did, they would be sacrificing a political victory by becoming an aggressor. Looking at the propaganda strategy, it looks like they think this is a free chance at rehabilitating their image.
SanityZetpe66@reddit
Definitely, no one likes Iran nor their actions, but everyone understands that whatever they're doing is justified due to the clear aggression of the US and Israel, who are arguably as hated as Iran right now.
And so far after the initial strikes to infrastructure they have mostly restrained themselves after, you can't even criticize them for not negotiating since the US has attacked them in the middle of negotiations before.
No one likes the situation nor any player, but they know who started this shit and who's just answering back against aggression, before this Iran was just funding a failing proxy network and almost succumbing.
keepthepace@reddit
Why would Iran change anything if they win this? Hell, even if the US 'wins', the POTUS and the sec. of war even insisted that they did not plan any regime change or nation building.
EU does not like the regime of mollahs, and this is unlikely to change. It is a violent theocracy that crushes its own population. But EU and Iran have competent diplomacy and are able to recognize that they can have transactional relationships even if they don't like each other.
blobofhope@reddit
Trump is definitely managing to unite the world, not with Iran but against him, and hopefully soon against these illegal wars too…
keepthepace@reddit
EU officials were joking that Putin deserves a statue next to the founding fathers of Europe, maybe Trump should as well.
glowinggoo@reddit
Isn't that the joke in China, that Trump is the greatest nation-builder (of China)?
blobofhope@reddit
If he hears about it he might demand it under threat of tariffs!
Ironlion45@reddit
As much as Tehran wants to continue making everybody else suffer because the US is bombing them, lets not slip into the trap of sane-washing their regime. Remember just weeks ago they were in the news for executing teenagers for protesting. Publicly.
So many comments here treat it like some kind of good-guy, bad-guy situation but man it's never the "good guys" or the "bad guys" who suffer the most. The Iranian people deserve better...from everyone.
Realpolitik: Iran wants to take advantage of the high prices they helped create to generate badly needed cash.
Dracogame@reddit
What’s your point? Trump is retarded and just caused an insane global crisis while fucking over his own country.
This is true regardless of Iran’s regime.
Kubocho@reddit
Yeah Iran is executing people for protesting, your USA is killing US citizens broadlight without reason by shooting them in the head (yeah those ICE agents killing that woman on their car) so I dont know man, those protesters were doing some protest, what was doing that woman who got executed just by going to work? Or that nurse guy who got shoot like 4 or 5 times defending someone, you americans have your head so deep in your ass that, dont see that you are killing more innocents than Iran regime.

Well that was the only move to play ever here. Even for the US.
It’s wild that the current admin thought they could pull this off. Previous admins since fucking Carter had considered this and always came back to the cold reality that it’s just not feasible.
Spain, and frankly all of Europe’s and Asia’s only interest was keeping the strait open and the oil flowing. Their best option now is negotiating with Iran. They’ll likely be paying tolls but it’s that or no oil so it’s not really a choice.
