SS: When this was drawn in 2019, the glacier was on an upswing; it was doing better than in previous years. Now the results are showing and the glacier is on terminal decline. It really struck me that this kid, probably a teenager, almost adult, by now, will inherit a world with crippled nature. I have a 5-year-old here in Iceland and he will be my current age in the year 2060. I have no idea what the world will look like in 2060, but I doubt he will be enjoying glaciers the same way.
TeaPrimary1147@reddit
Then why force him.into this wretched existence? I feel so.sorry for him
maddiweinstock@reddit
The world has a 0% chance of improving if there is nobody left to try.
My goal is to bring 2-3 kids into the world, raise them to be upstanding, self sufficient citizens, with the education and drive to do meaningful work for society, whatever that means to them.
It’s a privilege to be able to provide that, and some of us are willing to take that chance for the betterment of humanity.
TeaPrimary1147@reddit
Hey, why not raise yourself to be upstanding and self sufficient, doing meaningful work for society instead of offloading the burden of a doomed world on a new generation? Do you think they'll also appreciate your family mental and genetic illnesses, addictions and trauma..? Very very selfish and egotistical you are.
maddiweinstock@reddit
you know nothing about me or my life lmao
TeaPrimary1147@reddit
You can't even pay for your cats.. your children will suffer and be wage slaves for decades. Don't do that to someone. It is a hell to be the kid of a poor family on top of all other evils of this world.

He will be fine. Icelanders have survived much worse.
HansProleman@reddit
I hate to make this point, but Iceland is infamously highly dependent on food importation.
banned4violence@reddit (OP)
He’s s rural kid, family has a sheep farm and access to a lake with trout. He already knows how to fish. They also grow potatoes. As is, he’s largely not reliant on food imports.
flower-power-123@reddit
I can understand how you can be concerned for the state of the planet and humanity but you personally, living in Iceland, benefit from rising temperatures. Has it crossed your (anybody's) mind that the world might collectively be better off as a result of rising temperatures?

Midwest USA here. We thought we were a climate refuge for the longest time here. Then Canada has wildfires literally from coast to coast just a few years ago. The wildfire smoke here got so bad that our air quality was on the same level as India. We had to stay indoors for our own safety first the longest time. The only other time we had to stay indoors was during those covid lockdowns. I see that you are trying to remain positive. It is good to have a good mental head space. With that being said, we are all doom eventually when it comes to climate change. I think it might be way too late to turn the ship around? You know? Thoughts? Thanks.
TheCrazedTank@reddit
It is absolutely too late, runaway processes are already feeding into themselves. We couldn’t put the brakes on now even if there was the political willpower to.
The only possible outcome we might be able to affect now is if any sort of Human life could exist or not, and with each day the “not” gets stronger.
bendallf@reddit
You read my mind. The outbreaks with wild animals in the tundra point to previous unknown diseases show they we are already in a losing battle. Also, co2 emissions kept going up even during Covid lockdowns. So the feed back loops regarding the tundra methane leaks are already happening. I just wish the press could start to tell us the truth for once? Maybe then people might start to believe them again but probably not? Thanks.
TheCrazedTank@reddit
They can’t do that, the second the general public realizes how bad it is the guillotines will come out.
The billionaires have a vested interest in keeping everyone in denial…
bendallf@reddit
What is the billionaires act like they seen the light and try to make it look like they are trying to fix the fixable problem. Otherwise, all the land they are buying and shelters that they are building are scaring everyone. It is like they know something that the rest of us do not know at all.
flower-power-123@reddit
I always wonder that I am supposed to do about this. Is it indeed a crisis? I guess I can drive an electric car. Elon wins in the end.
bendallf@reddit
Sometimes there is nothing that you can do to help make things better. So you try to enjoy your life as best as you can. I learn that from the hospital hospice patients. Take care.

A 2015 Nissan leaf is much more affordable and get you around for most rides.

I was speaking hyperbolicly. I don't plan to buy a Tesla.
mityman50@reddit
I buzz in and my name plate lights up
Ken: mityman50?
Me: What is Dunning-Kruger effect?
Ken: Correct. 100 points to you.

Im in San Diego and it was 80 something degrees in fucking January
banned4violence@reddit (OP)
The temperatures may not rise indefinitely, there is a possibility that the winters will be much colder if the AMOC collapses. This winter was super mild in the beginning, and now it’s been snow storms for most of the past month. Winter technically ends on the 15th of April, and that’s when we’re supposed to change from winter tires to summer tires, but I think I may need to keep the studded tires on the car up until May.

Progress comes at a cost. Sorry but I don’t want to live as a caveman.
Besides, estheticism is a pipeline to fascism.

You defend AI, of course you wouldn't give a fuck about the natural world or what we're doing to it lol
This_Estimate_7635@reddit
Actually I care a lot about the natural world. There are so many usable resources that we can use to make neat stuff.
adherentoftherepeted@reddit
So . . . "progress" vs. the entire biosphere you'd choose "progress"? Such a pathetic straw-dog argument "we have to burn all the fossil fuels increasingly forever OR we go back to eating grubs."
How is that "progress" if all the species we care about (including our own) cannot inhabit the planet any longer?
CerddwrRhyddid@reddit
Good old Iceland.
adherentoftherepeted@reddit
Kind of ironic that this is at an airport.
verstohlen@reddit
Someone once told me, nothin' lasts forever, kid. Especially glaciers and the sun.
Direption@reddit
Reading this was a sad, albeit normal, start to my day.
At least it's unseasonably warm today lol

Narrator: The glacier, in fact, did not last forever.

unfortunately the systems that we humans have bestowed upon ourselves is destroying our home and the natural beuties that come with it.
