So far, I’ve visited Albania, Croatia and Montenegro with Bosnia in the coming days and this beer might be favorite beer so far. What is your favorite?
I am on a quest to hit all the Balkans within three years; just need more funding. Ha!
Every beer I have tried so far has been a winner including the craft beers.
Not to anger anyone, but thus far Montenegrin wine has been the best.
Love the Balkans!!!!
StariKrchmar@reddit
Niško and Niško Kalfa from Serbia
Young_Owl99@reddit
I only visited Bosnia and Serbia.
I also tried Mythos.
Mine favorites in comparison
Sarajevsko Tamno > Jelen > Mythos
If I compare standart beers alone, Jelen would win but I loved darl lager of Sarajevsko
Jazzlike-Moose3123@reddit
We loved that beer when we were in montenegro. My friend has a photo of him in front of a logo painted wall with Nikšićko!

Macedonia - Skopsko (classic) Serbia - Zajecarsko Montenegro - Nik Gold Albania - Tirana Beer Kosovo - Pecko Croatia - Tomislav Bulgaria - Zagorka Greece - Mythos Slovenia - Lasko Dark Turkey - Efes (don't know others) Romania - Ursus (don't know others)
Fabulous-Blueberry46@reddit
Its Birra Peja not Pecko correct yourself
Brilliant_Window8474@reddit (OP)
Outstanding! Thank you
Final-Nebula-7049@reddit
efes is legit good, having tried a ton around the world
Kindly_Scientist@reddit
yeah its really good. not the best ive tried of course, but agree. its just the default option to me. maybe because i got used to it?
Final-Nebula-7049@reddit
No the malt taste is very distinct compared to regular beers. My go to would be Belgian beers but when I come to Turkey I always drink Efes
dominus_23@reddit
This was my favorite during my road trip last summer in the Balkans..in every country i went i drunk all the locals beers...they were all tasty. As for the one in the photo,i was told you can have it only in Split...don t know why. Cheers!

Looks awesome!!!
Kernel_Panic_0x115c@reddit
Skopsko has a new Wheat beer and it's pretty good, but for me the winner by far for Balkan beers is Korça, especially the dark one.
S-onceto@reddit
Zlaten Dab is way better imo.
Fun-Quail-7959@reddit
zlaten dab is shit

I love Korca. Sorry, my keyboard doesn’t type Balkan. 😄

Based on my opinion Niksicko is indeed the best beer of the balkans. And for the best wine you should visit Macedonia, you can also find Macedonian wines in the other Balkan countries.
Brilliant_Window8474@reddit (OP)
Thanks!
MechoThePuh@reddit
For Bulgarian - i recommend Pirinsko. Overall favourite for the Balkans is Jelen (i believe i will now be lynched by an angry Balkan mob)
original_af_@reddit
Maybe I ruined it for myself from drinking it too much in highschool (it was the cheapest lol), but damn I couldn't make myself drink Jelen ever again. Piss in a bottle...
Hot_Distribution_131@reddit
Hey, I am going to Belgrade in a few weeks. What Serbian beer would you recommend?
danielthomasinc@reddit
I don't know about their current selection but don't forget to check out Samo Pivo in stari grad, pretty big selection of all different kinds of beer.
gotoinstead@reddit
IMO best go to Srpska Kuća Piva in Novi Beograd, just behind the Novak restaurant. Last time I went they had very nice local brews.
Hot_Distribution_131@reddit
Thank you!

Uvijek je bilo smeće, a sad već godinama ni ne koriste ječmeni slad. Odron od piva

mr_dexter_x@reddit
Jelen and Nikšićko have same owner.
mad_monk3y@reddit
From all the Bulgarian beers that are easily accessible from almost every shop I'd choose Stolichno next in line is probably Pirinsko as it's rather cheap and ok tasking even though there is corn in it.
MechoThePuh@reddit
Ok that explains a lot. I love corn beers
Brilliant_Window8474@reddit (OP)
Thanks!
WorldlinessRadiant77@reddit
Serbian has the best beer, Bulgaria the best wine and Greece the best spirits imo.
But since you asked specifically about beers… … Serbia is doing something right. From the big standard mass market stuff to craft breweries.
Present-Abroad-7884@reddit
Just wrong. Most of the beer produced in Serbia can not legally be called in countries like Germany. Many companies substituted malted barley for glucose syrup and corn grits.
Here's a website listing pretty much all beers available in Serbia and their contents. It's in Serbian so you should use Google translate if you're interested.

Greek Mamos is by far my favorite balkan beer
the_drljashin@reddit
Don't forget to visit Sarajevo Brewery and drink some of their beers there.
Brilliant_Window8474@reddit (OP)
Will do. Be there tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!
Zapp_Brewnnigan@reddit
It’s a really beautiful brewery. They have a gift shop and museum next door, too!
Brilliant_Window8474@reddit (OP)
Fantastic! Thank you
the_drljashin@reddit
Always! Sarajevsko Dark is my favourite.
BorisLeLapin33@reddit
We also liked the Tuzla brewery if you happen to go! It's a good place to eat too

Thanks!!!

Birra Peja Crudo I believe it’s one of the best beers I’ve ever had. Even in US couldn’t find something that good.

StreetYak6590@reddit
I know we are not Balkan but I just wanted to say our commercial beers fucking suck lol
trigonom5@reddit
I recommend you to try Peja Crudo, probably the best one in the Balkans!
Echolomaniac@reddit
In Albania definitely try out Puka and Korça
Brilliant_Window8474@reddit (OP)
I love Korca. Sorry for the misspelling.
a_bright_knight@reddit
most of Balkan beers are crap. Bought up by large western corporations and then lowered the quality so they can sell their original brands as higher quality.
Brilliant_Window8474@reddit (OP)
That sounds sad. Ugh.

My reccomendations for Serbia are Valjevsko/Niško or Zaječarsko, Niško can be a little hard to find outside of Niš, but the city is also well worth visiting. Other than that, lots of craft breweries everywhere and I'm yet to run into one that sucks.
pohanii_isus@reddit
i heard a lot of recommendations for Zaječarsko but it quite dissapointed me, but after 2 of them klizi kao voda
original_af_@reddit
The best beer is a cold beer, the second best is whatever you have available xD. Zaječarsko has gotten a bit worse over the years but I still like it. It might be nostalgia from my studentska sirotinja days tho.
pohanii_isus@reddit
understandable
karlowolf05@reddit
Velebitsko is most probably the best non-craft, lager beer in Balkans, altough it's pretty hard to find.
My personal favourite is Osječko tough, altough most people frown upon it, but when you really like beer and like to drink it in very big amounts in one sitting it's definitely a way to go.
It's "zidarsko", pleasantly bitter, not that mellow or aromatic taste, really suitable for drinking in large quantities, "ide ko u sudoper". Only experienced drinkers understand.
Brilliant_Window8474@reddit (OP)
I loved Osjecko. A tiny bit bitter but that works for me Cheers
Hobo5000@reddit
Mamos in Greece is an all time great beer. Zlatan Dab in Macedonia is excellent as well. I live in Bulgaria so for me the best easily available Bulgarian beer is Zagorka Retro.
Mackan36@reddit

Ich mochte immer das Peja Pilsener aus Kosovo sehr gerne, als ich dort gelebt habe.

As a beer enjoyer, Nikšićko is really great. Might almost be better than Laško, although I will never admit this in real life.

Dark Zaječarsko would probably be only domestic beer I think is worth it. Maybe Valjevsko (some people recommend it, but I never tried it).
I'm much more of a wine enthusiast, and I would very much recommend you to try various wines grown in Serbia like Sila, Probus and Prokupac. Special shout out for Beli Bermet from Sremski Karlovci loved that thing.

In Greece, Nimfi and Corfu-red are great
