Turned out pretty radical!
infield_fly_rule@reddit
Guy in my marina did that. Was horrible. First season he reflected sun into someone’s boat and caused a rift. Second season the film had all died from UV and he spent hours scraping it off.
RDIIIG@reddit
Reminds me of this:
Chris_Christ@reddit
These windows are completely vertical. This is a complete non issue.
pdqlrc32@reddit
unless you're windows are facing south in the northern hemisphere
reeferjoe@reddit
He's in Canada, eh.
ImUrHklBry@reddit
That's the first thing I thought too immediately when I saw the pics. That's too hard to imagine for the rest of these judgmental dumb asses. I'd love to see what their boats look like. Probably a toy they use when their mom pours them a bubble bath.
svsonora@reddit
I have no opinion on the film but where does all this anger come from? lol
ImUrHklBry@reddit
No anger.🤣🤷🏼♂️ Just defining OP, adding a nice addition to his beautiful cat and others talking smack about how it's going to affect everyone else in the marina is silly.
granth1993@reddit
How is OP going to swim without his fins….. murderer.

Secret-Temperature71@reddit
Except when the boat rolls and pitches, so unless it is a dock queen, yes it is an issue.
LaSalsiccione@reddit
When it rolls and pitches it’s mostly going to be pointing at the sea or the sky.
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
And it’s going to be 5 miles offshore… I don’t stay in any marina.
Secret-Temperature71@reddit
So I am sitting on a sailboat at the intersection of sea and sky, I will see flashes.
Or I am on the bridge of a ship, I will see flashes.
Or I am on a distant or low flying airplane and I will see flashes.
vulcansheart@reddit
Agreed. The sun will all reflect down onto the deck

Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
All gear no idea? I built boats in Canada for 3 years, I restored one the very first j24 hulls single handed over the course of 2 years and been sailing in Canada and south east Asia for 25+ years.
I’m a certified captain and I’m on the water nearly every single day.
I’ve done multiple 500 mile+ passages in the last few years.
What is your experience?
BroItSnowedToday@reddit
YouTube bro. No one cares about your experience. Everyone knows reflective tint is a shocking idea.
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
We know nothing right?
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
YouTube? Funny you mention that. Was just talking to Colin from Parlay Revival and he was thinking of doing the same. But what does he know right?
PuppyGuts27@reddit
This really ruffles some feathers. I may do this when I get tint.
blowninheritance@reddit
I really enjoy the whole “I don’t care what anyone else thinks attitude” don’t worry we believe you, especially when you went though the process of posting this on Reddit and Facebook, then get super defense when people tell you it’s a horrible idea.

I actually don't have too much opinion on what you did but your comments (especially the 'boating' comments lol) sure make you look like a 'i motor everywhere dock to dock' n00b.

DarkVoid42@reddit

Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
At nigh? The helm is raised above the saloon pal. You don’t look through the windows to navigate in rain or at night.
Now go have a glass of water and think about your life.
DarkVoid42@reddit
yup good luck spending all night navigating from the helm without coming in to the salon in which case you can only see your own reflection. im suuure you have tons of experience driving a cat at night haha.
Now go have a glass of water and think about your intelligence levels.

I am only judging based on your comments above. Let me guess: the Ducati has a loud AF exhaust.
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
Why are you so invested in this?
dolampochki@reddit
I suppose, probably because dealing with someone arrogant, calls for attention.
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
I’m arrogant because I dismiss the claims of people who have very little experience in the field I work professionally in? naw.
dolampochki@reddit
No, you are arrogant because of your attitude. Disagreeing with somebody’s opinion is one thing, but you lack empathy and disregard everyone around you. A superiority complex could be a real obstacle in life. I would seek therapy if I were you, it could help immensely. Good luck, I really mean it.
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
Anyone around me? Is anyone in this sub around me? My boat lives on a mooring pal.

Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
I’m sure my customers are gonna love it, and our local boating group thinks it’s great. I’ve already sold it to two other catamarans.

wkavinsky@reddit
I'm amused at people saying "but those are vertical windows" as if they aren't aware that at the dock it's not uncommon for the boat to be at 5-10 degree tilts - and much higher tilts at sea or anchor.
A catamaran may not heel over to 45 degrees like a monohull, but they most definitely do heel.

I make sure to wear sunglasses at night so I’m not blinded by window reflections
DarkVoid42@reddit
you had better do so. any light source from chartplotters and interior lights will completely turn those windows into mirrors.
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
Yea my bowsprit mounted chart plotter is going to cause some serious issues. How could I have forgotten that?
DarkVoid42@reddit
its not the bowspirit mounted chartplotter you should worry about. its the one at the helm. you do know these films work on light pressure, right ? so what happens when the light pressure inside the window is higher than the outside. oh wait, i believe thats called a mirror. you know - the thing you stare at every morning. guess what you can see behind a mirror ? nothing. thats what youre going to see when you look through the windows at night, Mr. Logans Run from Thailand.
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)

Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
Loads of luxury motor yachts have reflective film on their windows.
_k3rn3l_p4n1c_@reddit
The thermal stress reflective put on the window is substantial, not all windows are designed to handle that type of stress. Putting such type of film on a boat is a risk, they might cause cracks or sudden breakage if they have a significant thermal shock.
This is one of the reason there are specific films which are made for this exact purpose, that are UV resistant, salt water resistant but also are non extreme on thermal stress as reflective films are.
It sounds like a bad idea.
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
This is particularly made for this task. The windows are also acrylic not glass. Thermal stress will be much less than the dark smoke tint they were before
SailingSpark@reddit
I do not see this working out well in bad weather and at night. It is going to really diminish your view out.
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)

Genuine question for those advocating this will fail: why would this (or in general) window tint fall?
Context: I had to spec out commercial windows for a few construction projects and learned the window tint commercial windows use lasts 20+ years before failure.
Thank you for your experience and answers!
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
My main concern is #1 the intensity of the UV rays here in the tropics.
2 fenders / lines rubbing against the hull windows and damaging the film
3 general wear and tear.
With that said it was $500 so if it lasts a year I’m happy.
Ixxtabb@reddit

This seems surprisingly controversial. Can you talk about why you did this ( heat, bright sun, good looks), and did it solve your problem? I think it looks good, and the concerns about reflecting distant navigation lights seem a bit overblown.
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
I live in Thailand. It was 35°c today with 75% humidity.
Prior to this my windows were a very dark smoked acrylic. It was also pretty UV damaged.
I’m finishing about a 1 month refit and I wanted to both cut down the heat inside and cover up the crazing on the windows.
It gets soooo hot here and the purchase of the film and install was only about $500 USD so I pulled the trigger.
It looks awesome in person, and there’s absolutely nothing to worry about in terms of blinding people, confusing other boaters or setting boats on fire with reflection- this sub is just full of wildly inexperienced people.

Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
Wish my windows were covered from day one- then I wouldn’t have such an issue with the crazing.
I’m currently replacing all my deck hatches because of it.
mwax321@reddit
You mean the lenses? If you take the lenses out you can use a router to template from the old lenses. Will save you a fortune compared to replacing the lewmar hatch lenses from lewmar. It's just plexiglass/perspex
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
It’s not that easy.
I thought about it- but even the replacement parts for 8 hatches were over $4000 here in Thailand- lewmar wanted $12k+ for brand new complete units.
I actually just ordered three Hanse hatches from the manufacturer in China. They are about $160 a pop from the factory and almost the same size.
Will test fit then next week when they arrive.
mwax321@reddit
Nice. I too am an Alibaba-er. I have 12v marine air cons that sell for $6000 in US. $1000 each direct from manufacturer. Bauer Jr dive compressor: $7000, but the clone (which uses german compressor parts) was something like $1500.
But as for the hatches, it was that simple for me. I just cut out new lenses and installed them. The gaskets were still good. I had to drill out a few screws. I still have a few more hatches to go. Some of the friction hinges need service, but it doesn't bother me too much.
Let me know how those hatchese work out. I guess my only problem is supply chain. You might want to just order a couple handles/hinges/gaskets and drop them in a box deep in the bilge :). While lewmar is pricey, I can walk into Budget Marine and buy a new gasket today.
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
They are the supposed to be the same size as lewmar (off by a few mm)- I ordered one of each size I need to change and will check fitment. I don’t mind if I need to trim or add a bit of glass to make them fit.
If they work I’ll order all of them and a box of spares for sure.
mwax321@reddit
Nice! If you don't mind (and somehow remember) could you post an update if the hatches work out?

FWIW, there is a guy in the UK that sells kits to replace the lenses in Lewmar hatches, I did it on two of mine, worked well and was a few hundred dollars each if I remember. Not sure if he is still around.
Land_of_smiles@reddit (OP)
I’ve got a bunch of the gasket materiel and a few pin and set screw sets. But cutting the rectangular holes for the locks is a super hard, and the hinges are super expensive
chuckb6174@reddit
Is that diy project or is it a pro u need to hire. Could i ask about cost?
mwax321@reddit
You could easily DIY if you can sew a little bit. I had it done in Guatemala. Cost about $600 I think. Mostly material. The COL is very cheap in Rio Dulce, so the labor is also very cheap.
cymen@reddit
Another option is this stuff (just linking to Amazon for ease, you can find it at other places apparently in bulk and locally which might be easier):
https://www.amazon.com/VViViD-Perforated-Window-Prevent-Strike/dp/B071P8THCY
It's the same material that is printed on and put on the side of buses for ads. The upside ot this material is that it beathes and some plastic windows can't be sealed behind a film as it causes some kind of failure (I don't recall what, apparently our cockpit windows are like that).
pdqlrc32@reddit

reggae_muffin@reddit
This boat? I don’t think you know what that word means.
ElegantAd4946@reddit
Just because there are othe boats and vessels with different designs doesn't mean that this one isn't beautiful.
Where one finds beauty is completely subjective, I know exactly what the word means.
reggae_muffin@reddit
Gemini lmao? Now your comment makes sense. Not everyone has good taste.
ElegantAd4946@reddit
Taste is subjective. Maybe a concept that is incomprehensible to someone with a closed mind. Suppose you can't teach a old dog new tricks.
reggae_muffin@reddit
Not a closed mind, I just don’t think this boat is objectively “pulchritudinous” - that’s a very strong adjective for a basic charter cat lmao. Go off though.
ElegantAd4946@reddit
I chose the word to use as I subjectively find beauty in the design, that doesn't mean I don't find other vessels more beautiful.
It was a compliment nothing more, nothing less. My favorite ship at the moment, the most pulchritudinous of them all imo is the T/S LEADER. One I've sailed on many times.
