my brother was born with trisomy 9 in 1981 after our mum was prescribed debendox (bendectin) for morning sickness. hes now 45 — one of the oldest known trisomy 9 survivors in the world.
debendox was prescribed to millions of pregnant women in the 70s and 80s before being withdrawn. our family has always wondered whether there was a connection between the drug and marks chromosomal condition.
were now doing whole genome sequencing on mark and researching whether debendox exposure could be linked to chromosomal abnormalities. this is a 50 year old mystery we finally have the tools to investigate.
if you or your mother was prescribed debendox during pregnancy — especially if the child was born with any chromosomal condition — wed love to hear your story.
