Driving to Chelmsford

My job needs to me drive to Chelmsford 4 days a month (non-consecutive, will pay travel, be there for 8am). Any one do this journey regularly or at this time? Whats the M25 like or do you go Cambridge and M11?

You can do it in less than 2 hours if you leave around 5.30am but coming back after 4pm would be 2.5 hrs most days. I worked on a project in Chelmsford and had to go 2 - 3 days in a week for about 2 years. I would consider a hotel and combine your days in the week if at all possible

Thank you, good to know about the timings for home as well.

What time are you driving home more importantly?

hoping to be leaving to head home at 4, but on occasion that will be 5 or 6 . . . how bad 🫣

You'll want to wait until the Black Cat roadworks are finished next year to consider the Cambridge route- once those are done and there's a continuous dual carriageway the entire way from MK to Cambridge it might be more comparable time wise

I’m hoping that might really help as well, especially as I know the Cambridge drive really well

The M1 from. Luton to the M25 is the worst part. M25 in that direction is usually OK.Â

Good to know about M25 as not really driven it much.

Traffic isn’t too bad at that time. Ive done the trip and needed to be in Chelmsford for 9am and actually got there early.
I’d say it’s not too bad but hard to say when you get more chaotic weather and seasons

Thank you, that is good to hear.

I go down the M1 then clockwise around the M25 to the A12. The M11 only has 2 lanes and it can completely slow the journey down when lorries start overtaking. The traffic on the M25 during that time is always flowing nicely unless there has been an accident. If you leave before 05:30, the Luton junctions on the M1 won’t be as bad either. You could try both ways to see what’s best for yourself.

Thank you, this is good to hear. Only ever heard horror stories about M25 so wanted to hear from real people!
