In high school they asked you to cover the books with paper bag coverings. DOE books are expensive and they expect these books to last for about 15 years, then they buy new updated books.
AsideLost@reddit
I always liked to use the comic section from the Sunday newspaper. Didn’t hold up as long tho
LikelyLioar@reddit
Yeah, why don't they do this anymore? It seems like a good idea.
TeutonJon78@reddit
Do most kids even have textbooks still instead of tablets/Chromebooks?
LikelyLioar@reddit
Oh. I don't know. I'm child-free.
They could still wrap their phones.
gale_force@reddit
"Child-free" is so cringey. It's like how vegans tell you they're vegan.
koei19@reddit
They were responding to a direct question, it's not like they just showed up in the thread and announced it or something
gale_force@reddit
You're correct. Their answer to the direct question was "I don't know."
koei19@reddit
So you're mad that they volunteered a single iota of information beyond the bare minimum necessary to answer the question?
gale_force@reddit
Not mad at all. I cringed.
CantFindMyWallet@reddit
And now you decided to share that feeling by making everyone else cringe?
gale_force@reddit
I'm not alone. And statistically you're likely a bot.
CantFindMyWallet@reddit
This is how you get through your day, huh?
RalphWaldoEmers0n@reddit
My kid doesn’t have one book
Coriandercilantroyo@reddit
All their material is on the web?
RalphWaldoEmers0n@reddit
Yep
Chromebook better be charged
MajesticLow@reddit
😂😂😂😂😂 I think that is an amazing idea. 😊😊😊😊
Pretend-Menu-8660@reddit
This. It’s all chrome books and an occasional soft cover novel… but often it’s available to read on the Chromebook too
Electronic_Rope4178@reddit
They have chromebooks, my daughter is 17 and don’t recall her ever having actual textbooks after probably 3rd grade.
audiate@reddit
Books don’t have lifespans long enough to benefit from it.
GravyPainter@reddit
All my kids books are paperback
Lensgoggler@reddit
I still do this. I buy craft paper by the roll and wrap my kid's school books and notebooks
LikelyLioar@reddit
That's adorable.
Lensgoggler@reddit
Books are given by the school and returned at the end of the year so it's important they stay more or less nice. My mom was even more cool: she had a roll of old wallpaper. That paper lasted the entire year on the book, very sturdy!
LikelyLioar@reddit
For some reason we started using contact paper in my family. I could never get it smooth.

Now that the grocery stores all turned back to paper bags, they probably will soon.

This was crazy. So I did this from 1st to half of 3rd. At the time I was going to a catholic school on the east side of town where I walked to my sitter’s house after school. Come to a new town, public school and suddenly this practice stopped and throughout the rest of my years at school was never done again (even attempts to replicate were threatened with suspension (at the time a new concept, before, punishment meant detention) and fines for damaging school property).
Things like this was that culture shock I had moving to a new town going from my little Catholic school with its Dominican Sisters as principal and teachers and 10 to a class vs going to a public magnet school (with uniforms that literally looks like what inmates wear) and pushing 30 to a classroom. It’s like I stepped into a new decade overnight.
Internal_Praline_658@reddit
I usually used the comics sealed and reinforced with clear packing tape

Recently a 30-y-o said to me, “Remember like when your mom used to put those plastic covers on your school books and they had cool patterns on them and everything?” Umm fucking no ma’am I do not? Do you mean the Grand Union bags I put on my books myself at 10 pm the night before the second day of school?!
Top-Wolverine-8684@reddit
My mom had five of us in the house, and when I think about the amount of things she always had to save for school: shoe boxes, toilet paper rolls, grocery bags, cardboard, rubber bands... There were always endless projects.
BlehBleh5@reddit
Tower Records printed paper(?)
tannyduca@reddit
This wasn't a thing for my schools.
MajesticLow@reddit
I LOVED my grocery bag book cover. My grandma would do it for me until I got old enough, and her work was pristine. I’d customize drawings onto my books and doodle throughout the time I had it on. Memories 🥰🥰🥰🥰
No_Outcome_7470@reddit
I wanted one with graphics so bad, instead I got these fuckers!
--Jester--@reddit
Don't need book covers if you don't use books anymore.
Embarrassed_Quail910@reddit
We're you a neat use scissors and tape sort of kid? Or did you just do it the "fast" way by just folding everything?
Fuckitall2346@reddit
I could never get them on right and they’d crumple away within the first week of school 🙁
DustedGorilla82@reddit
My mom was a pro at it. Screw the clear contact paper they use now. Also what happened to paper bags???
Coriandercilantroyo@reddit
Paper is making a comeback in California with the latest laws on plastic bags
Perfect_Molasses7365@reddit
My kids still do this. It’s required by their school
Significant_Dog412@reddit
Never used the paper shopping bag, but did cover textbooks with cutouts from old magazines.
Aquatichive@reddit
They won’t understand the excitement either! Who will doodle on it?? What will they draw!! I wouldn’t wish growing up with smartphones on anyone. Give me the good ol days
