What’s the BEST place you’ve ever been on holiday?

I know we all love a moan, but I got a bit depressed reading that other thread about worst holidays. So where should I go on holiday?
Japan was the best place I’ve ever been - everyone was super friendly and everything was incredibly efficient. Even the buses ran exactly according to the timetable, which blew my mind. Beautiful architecture and nature too.
First_Folly@reddit
Japan was my best, too. That's why I'm heading back there shortly. The people are friendly and helpful, the food is great and diverse, and there's so much to do and see that I literally didn't have enough time the first time I went.
Optimal_Collection77@reddit
China before everyone had phones. It was bonkers. They hadn't seen many western people so they kept coming up to us amazed how tall we were.
I went back recently, and it was like going to the future. They've built and developed so much in 20 odd years
Moeen_Ali@reddit
I saw a YouTube comment of all things from a man who first went to China in 1978 and has been back a few times up to the present day. He said it was like he had been able to see 150 years of a country's history in just 50. I found it very thought provoking.
Optimal_Collection77@reddit
Honestly it's incredible. Its amazing how many people would have been lifted out of poor conditions (maybe not poverty) as a result
thedudeabides-12@reddit
I lived there for 7 years and it's amazing how much it changed in that time.. You could leave your hometown and go on holiday and buy the time you got back there would be new buildings, bridges and so on completed..a really lovely place to live in, visit or experience..
Not_A_Toaster_0000@reddit
There seem to be new metro lines and stations every time I visit. Which is wonderful, but also kind of depressing
Optimal_Collection77@reddit
Totally. Dubai was like this 15 years ago. I was in HK and Shenzhen last November and it's honestly astonishing. Not just building but nice architecture with amazing technology.
Plenty_Rabbit2074@reddit
China is incredible. The infrastructure, history and food are all some of the best I've ever experienced
5unzoo@reddit
China has rapidly advanced and developed more than the media has portrayed in the last decade.
apeliott@reddit
Australia was so good that I quit my job as soon as I got home then flew back out to live there.
I then flew to Japan, arrived as a tourist, and basically never left.
Cyprus was also nice. Corfu was a close second. I also enjoyed the USA but I was young and spent most of the time in Disneyland and Wet and Wild.
Germany was good as well but we went in winter so it was painfully cold outside.
Sorbicol@reddit
All the American subreddits will tell you that living and working in Japan as a foreigner is a terrible, terrible experience.
I take it that's some distance from the truth?
Moeen_Ali@reddit
Tbh I absolutely loved Japan and it was easily my favourite holiday but some of the poor sods you'd see going home on the Tokyo metro at 11pm after a day at the office looked absolutely exhausted. That said, surely people working in warehouses, cafes and other normal jobs don't put in wild hours.
apeliott@reddit
I'm not American but my experience has been great.
I know that for a lot of people it's pretty shit. Especially Americans. Most come over and work for "black" companies.
Follow_The_Lore@reddit
Nah this is definitely true. Also a very xenophobic country.
No_Doubt_About_That@reddit
Alsace Region in France.
Or Venice in the off-season. Has a unique vibe at night in particular.

Really loved California, beautiful place and so much to do. We spent 2 weeks for our honeymoon. Joshua Tree being the highlight. In an ideal world, I would retire there.
GuybrushFunkwood@reddit
First time I went to the Caribbean (St.Lucia) it wasn’t so much the place, which to be clear is breathtakingly beautiful, it was the fact I’m a HUGE Monkey Island fan and growing up in a shitty council estate I never imagined I’d ever see the Caribbean
Acubeofdurp@reddit
My eyes popped out when I read monkey island, now I want to go st Lucia 😫

Malta!! Beautiful weather, beautiful scenery, so much to do and doesn’t cost a lot. You can have a really good holiday and pack loads in on a budget. Get a rental car to easily explore the mainland and Gozo
SluppyMcPuppy@reddit
As someone who spends half of the year in Malta (perks of having a Maltese partner) I couldn't agree more! Plus the food is STUNNING

An apartment about ½ a mile inland on Ibiza about 20 years ago. Cheap, quiet and pretty. We could walk to the beach or we could go into the woods near the accommodation. Possibly the most restful and relaxing holiday I've been on

Iceland (the country, I have to add) Loved it, amazing experience.
analogueamos@reddit
What time of year did you go? I'm thinking of a trip in July but realise this isn't perhaps the best season
petiweb5@reddit
I went in November. It's beautiful in every season, and very different. There is a table in VisitingIceland sub about what you can see in the different months. You can't go wrong with either. Have fun!
cheesewindow@reddit
July is a great time to go. You can get around the island with no issues and pretty much guaranteed to have no weather issues.
I’ve been in summer and winter and it’s a different experience. It’s great in the snow and ice but you see what’s under that in July.
Vaniky@reddit
Same, expensive though!
levezvosskinnyfists7@reddit
Iceland is the bollocks. 100% lives up to all the hype! I’m hoping to go for the 3rd time either this year or next.

I'd love to do New Zealand again. Truly the most incredible place I've ever been by far
-Po-Tay-Toes-@reddit
Agreed, I went for the Lord of the Rings stuff (which was absolutely worth it) but all of the other stuff was absolutely fantastic as well. Can't wait until I can get back.
They also have very good chocolate, I put on like a stone. Just don't bother ordering curry.
Monbro1@reddit
Whittakers chocolate is almost perfect. And I agree to pass on the curry
-Po-Tay-Toes-@reddit
I miss it so much. You can get it in the UK but the shops that have it don't seem to stock the best flavour Hokey Pokey.
whucares000@reddit
I've only heard good things about New Zealand but what about the ppl? Are they good to you?
Robzillor@reddit
I spent two months traveling across both islands and found the Kiwis to be the friendliest, most welcoming people I’ve encountered in all my travels—including in Canada and Fiji.
bishibashi@reddit
I’ve always said I’d love to live in NZ if it was 2 hours from Europe. Australia was a great place to visit, stayed and worked about 6 months, but far too much macho bullshit for me to ever consider staying.
Dunny2k@reddit
Finland/Norway during the winter. Absolutely stunning with snow up to your knees. Plus Northern Lights.
garlicmayosquad@reddit
Even now, Lviv in Ukraine is the most beautiful city in Europe. Still ok to go to for a week, I was there for months last summer and will return this summer
João Pessoa and Recife in Brazil are both amazing, absolute paradise.
ClydeB3@reddit
Tough to decide between Denmark and Norway.
I loved Copenhagen - it felt very safe (even alone at night), everyone was friendly, public transport was great.
FoZzIbEaR@reddit
I'd recommend Copenhagen purely for the pastries alone.
0hCrumbs@reddit
Australia was beautiful, spent six weeks driving around \ hiking, crashing in motels , the wildlife, long empty roads, deserted beaches, coast lines was really something to remember, spent a week driving around Tasmania also, didn’t really do any cities and everyone wet met was friendly and helpful along the way
Iceland in the winter was top tier also, definitely want to go back
Not really into cities but Amsterdam has a really nice vibe and feeling to the place, watch out for them bikes though
And for holidays here in UK, you really can’t beat Scotland, such amazing hiking and views, absolutely stunning place and great people also
Hefty_Peanut@reddit
I liked my holiday to Naples, Pompeii, Capri, Sorrento and the Amalfi coast.
As a staycation I'm a sucker for north Wales too.

North Yorkshire moors, sun, sea, giant chocolate cannonballs and plenty of walking.
DeirdreBarstool@reddit
I like different places for different reasons. Hong Kong/Macau for the food, nightlife, luxury hotels and amazing casinos. Taiwan for the lovely people and incredible night markets. Still dream about the food.
If I had to pick one place I’d have to say Iceland. I feel in love with it on my first visit and went back 7 times in 3 years to experience different areas in different seasons. I had never experienced such unspoilt wild nature in my life. The volcanos, northern lights, hot springs, waterfalls, glaciers.. everything. We did a super jeep tour in winter where the guide said ‘oh let’s do one more stop’. It was a hole in the ground with no signage and nobody and nothing for miles around except snow. It was the famous cave from Game of Thrones where Jon Snow had sex with Ygritte. Anywhere else it would have been chargeable with hundreds of people milling around and a gift shop.
Iceland is my happy place.
punky63@reddit
Japan for me as well. It's so different, culturally, that i was always fascinated whether I went. I'm also a sucker for big cities, so Tokyo was a fantastic experience. It's the ultimate metropolis. I don't think I would ever get bored living there
On a sidenote, 7/11, familymart and Lawson's are amazing. If I happened to be walking past one of them I would nearly always go inside, sometimes for ramen or fried chicken, or just to have a look

The Dolomites or Switzerland, for the scenery
Beautiful lakes set amongst mountains, great walks and hikes, some really lovely towns to stay in - Thun in Switzerland in particular is a great place to stay, a river flows right through the centre so you can sit at the waters edge with an ice cream every evening. And staying in Thun you have the means to travel to Lake Oeschinensee and Lake Blausee, as well a Grindelwald to get the cable car up to Grindelwald First and either zip line or travel back down by mountain cart
Coc0London@reddit
I agree with all of this 100 percent, the scenery is spectacular. My most favourite place on earth is Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland, then followed by the Dolomites in Italy, but overall Switzerland is my most favourite country in the world
ChancePattern@reddit
I absolutely adored Armenia and Georgia. The history, food, people and scenery cannot be beaten. I understand things have changed a bit since the Russian invasion of Ukraine but would still love to go back for a holiday there
zazabizarre@reddit
Peru! Jaw-droppingly beautiful, incredible hikes, great food, really interesting culture and history.
Octoboy1@reddit
Kos in Greece. I emailed the hotel saying it was our honeymoon (it wasn't) and they gave us a free upgrade to the honeymoon suite. Private villa off the main site, private beach, pool, hot tub in the room. It was fucking rad
Coc0London@reddit
Hahahaha that's amazing
FitSolution2882@reddit
Athens and maybe Cyprus.
Absolutely fantastic both of them.
sjw_7@reddit
If I could only ever go on one holiday again it would be to the Maldives. Went there for two weeks many years ago and it is an incredibly beautiful place.
We have always said we will go back one day but the cost is astonashing.

Porto, Portugal and Hawaii.
Portugal was a surprise to me because it's a bit under the radar (at least in my family they revere France as the best place in the world to visit). The food is phenomenal. Lots of hotels and air bb. Gorgeous architecture.
Hawaii is sublime, just like the pictures. I wanted to stay! Very expensive, though.

Banff and Jasper in the Canadian Rockies. Nothing else comes close.
We picked up a rental car in Calgary and drove all the way through Banff National Park and on to Vancouver. Every single view felt like you'd wandered into a postcard, and having the car meant we could just stop whenever something caught our eye, which was constantly.
We spent the days hiking and exploring, and the evenings winding down with good food and a cold beer. The perfect balance.
The wildlife was something else too. Spotting a brown bear in the wild, from a very respectful distance, is something I'll never forget. You just don't get moments like that in many places.
We were also lucky with timing in ways we didn't realise at the time. We visited just before the devastating fire that hit Jasper, so we got to see it in all its glory. That adds a strange extra layer of gratitude looking back.
If you ever get the chance, go.
carlovski99@reddit
We had a great holiday to Croatia, specifically Zadar a couple of years ago. Probably because didn't really have any expectations, i'd booked it purely based on somewhere different they flew to from nearby airport. Apartment i had booked with minimal research turned out great (I'd stay there again), organised stuff I booked was brilliant. Really good food (apart from the first night) and everyone was friendly and helpful. Croatia is beautiful too. GF was crying when we had to go home!

The ancient city had been #1 on my bucket list since I was five and saw a photo in a book about volcanoes, so going as an adult was very special. Bit I didn't expect the modern town to be so lovely - drinking limoncello in the square at night is one of my favourite memories
EngineeringCockney@reddit
In no particular order; Vietnam, Canada, Rome, San Marino & Andorra
adhdontplz@reddit
The Brasov area of Romania is truly magical - seeing bears in the wild and rescued ones in the sanctuary nearby, hiking through beautiful mountains with crystal clear streams running through, surprisinfly gorgeoys weather - 20/23 degrees end of April - and a lovely medieval town with museums in the centre.
I also loved Malta, Ravenna and Florence and Glasgow.
TheEnglishNorwegian@reddit
Honestly, Florida purely for the theme parks, weather and fun activities everywhere when I was a teenager, was a great trip, was out there for 3 weeks, had a holiday romance, had a few friends with me and we did all the parks. Too young to legally drink out there so we kept it light with just an occasional beer and honestly it was just a wonderful time.
As an adult, Japan, Hawaii and a road trip across Europe have all been highlights for me. However I'm looking forward to taking my kids to Disney when they are a bit older.

I’ve only been on one holiday abroad, but I will say Arizona was lovely. Went mid February so wasn’t too hot, but also wasn’t cold. For me though, it wasn’t necessarily the place that made it amazing, it was the people who I spent time with.
Mr_Coastliner@reddit
I'd say Australia. Did 3 weeks there on a road trip across the East. Driving across the beach at Fraser island with Dingos everywhere then staying on the island in tents was cool, the lake in the middle was stunning.
South Africa very close IMO.
I've not been Japan yet to avoid the risk of not returning as I imagine that would take the top spot for me!
Working_Bowl@reddit
For pure family fun and how much we all enjoyed ourselves - Florida.
Also had an amazing holiday to Brittany a few years ago. Beautiful, sandy beaches. Plus I just love France, so always a winner.
Lake Garda was also incredibly pretty.

Brazil (Natal and Rio)..been 3 times fcking love that place, the food, surf, people, party atmosphere, weather..they actually have a nightlife that exists probably the most 24 hour city I've ever visited was Rio.. Saying that I did visit all those times in my younger days and although I'd still love to go I certainly wouldn't be doing any partying.. My new favourite place is Barbados, surf, weather, calm, quiet and it's only an 8 hour or so flight which is not too bad.. special mention to Shenzhen as well that place it's so fcking cool..
