Is Romania considered Balkans or Central Europe? I just googled ”Balkan map” and google doesn’t seem to include Romania in the map anymore…

Balkan is a peninsula, in black sea and mediteranean sea, geografically speaking. If you just want to draw a line to see the limits , more or less is in the picture below. From culture perspective, Romania is all the way Balkan country, not only parts of it.
Macedonianboss@reddit
The eastern part of the line ends on the Ukrain-Romania border , not in Odesa
Antique_View7321@reddit
A peninsula is a peninsula. does not know about country borders. even the line is perfect straight is what balkan peninsula is. from the top of adriatic sea to the top of black sea.
Names-Are-Confusing@reddit
Culturally speaking Slovenia and most of Croatia also aren’t Balkan, then, but you seem to include them here.
Antique_View7321@reddit
I lived in 3 countries in Blakas, and those 2 above are included. and trust me....they are as balkan as they can be. From all perspectives.
raoulbrancaccio@reddit
Wallachia - Balkans
Transylvania - Central Europe
Moldavia - Eastern Europe
Remarkable_Cake_4735@reddit
Transylvanian here and I agree.
floare_salbatica@reddit
I agree with you. I'm from the region of Moldova and I always considered ourselves Eastern European, I was surprised when I first heard some Romanians calling us Balkans. In my mind Balkans= former Yugoslavia. It's true that we have a lot in common with the Balkans, but so de we with Eastern Europe ( the larger sense of it, not only Russia, Belarus and Ukraine). Sadly most people think of bad stereotypes when they say "Balkan" ( I refer to Balkan people in the first place), like poverty, corruption, drinking a lot etc. So they think Romania must be part of it. 😅
nurgleondeez@reddit
Even in Moldova we have more in common with serbians, macedonians and bulgarians than we have with russians, poles, belorussians or ukrainians in terms of culture and gastronomy.I live in Botosani and my life is more similar to a serb or bulgarian than it is to a ukranian or russian.
That kind of thing isn't accidental.
Our traditional clothes are more functional, like the balkans have, instead of the over the top kitsch that the eastern europeans wear
Our dances and music are closer to serbo-croatian ones
Our churches, even though it was under Moscow's rule untill Cuza, are more similar in design to the bulgarian ones in the interior than they are to the russian ones.Best examples of this you can see if you go to Moldova or western Ukraine, you can spot a romanian church easily
Our cooking is more flavourful and uses condiments that are specific to the balkan peninsula(like lovage, thyme, paprika, black pepper, etc).Just go to a balkan restaurant, get a cevapi and a serving of ajvar and tell me it doesn't taste like your romanian summer time barbeques
Even manele, the one music genre that everybody swears they ever listen to but it's somehow the most popular on YouTube constantly, sounds exactly like the balkan music from Bulgaria and the former Yugoslavian republics.
Geographically we are not balkans, but culturally it is beyond idiotic to deny that we are more balkan than we are eastern european
floare_salbatica@reddit
Funnyly enough, most of the things you mentioned don't matter to me at all. I guess we have totally different definitions of what culture means. 😅
nurgleondeez@reddit
Actually curious, what is culture for you,if clothes, art, architecture and cuisine are not part of it in your opinion?
floare_salbatica@reddit
Do you expect me to give you a serious answer when you have such a reductive view of Eastern European countries and make such shallow analogies? One thing is sure: mici and manele are not culture from my pov. When I think about similar cultures, I think about roots, traditions, literature, music ( and no, not manele, we all know it's not our traditional music), education system etc. We have a lot in common with both Eastern Europe and the Balkans due to our geographical position. You being from Moldova doesn't make you an authority on this matter.
nurgleondeez@reddit
I obviously wasn't talking about manele when I was talking about art,but leave it to snobs who think they are better than anyone else to twist words and meaning :)
And yes, mici are a part of our cuisine, and food is an essential part of culture. If you think culture is just books, theater and classical music you have a very warped understanding of what culture is.
Funny how me being from moldova and living half my life in the republic of moldova doesn't make me an expert on the matter, but you somehow are because "you feel like it" and because you hate manele for existing, like a good little racist.
floare_salbatica@reddit
Sure, buddy, go eat your mici while listening to manele and call it a day. I won't bother with you.
ClowningBad@reddit
You should look up the definition of "culture" because culture in this broad sense, means literally everything that a people do, which includes customs, food, all sorts of habits, the good and bad, everything and yes, we Romanians share a lot with the Balkans, this includes the food, the music, certain habits, in part also because our situation in history has been more similar to that of our Balkan neighbors: the great influence of the Ottoman empire + belonging to the greek side of orthodoxy + migration period. This is now reflected very strongly in our food(a lot of it with roots in ottoman/turkish cuisine and greek food + some austro-hungarian), party folk music and manele style, etc. So yes mici is culture same as boeuf salad, schnitzel and pig fat on bread are culture.
OkRepresentative4603@reddit
Sure we do have balkan influences as well but ALSO we are as culturally eastern european as we are balkans and we cant just deny that — i am saying that as someone who lives in Bukovina right next to the border of Ukraine. Dare i say the balkan influence such as manele and all that came to Moldova recently (as in in the past 200 years or so), since the union of Wallachia with Moldova. I am tired of hearing that we are more culturally balkan than we are eastern european, that is just straight bs.
nurgleondeez@reddit
Funny enough, you guys have more austrian and hungarian influence that eastern european. The old part of Vatra Dornei or Campulung for example look more like a mountain austrian town than a eastern european one.
OkRepresentative4603@reddit
Tbh the geographic relief really doesn't matter in this topic. In your opinion, can you also put Western Ukraine or other mountainous regions from Eastern Europe as culturally habsburg or Austrian? It doesn't make sense.
I am referring strictly to the local culture. The Bukovina region was heavily mixed (even before the "Descălecat" and the founding of the Principality of Moldavia) with Ruthenians and Vlachs (both populations being native to this land), then "spiced up" a little with Jews, Germans, Hungarians and other populations when Bukovina was ruled by the Habsburgs. But that still makes Bukovina to this day mainly culturally both eastern european and balkan. Well... if you ask my honest opinion, Bukovina also shares its local culture with other carpathian populations like slovaks, poles and ukrainians
nurgleondeez@reddit
And that's exactly my point. You guys, because of historical borders and influence, have less in common with eastern europe and more in common with central europe
Russia and other eastern europeans(everything east of Poland basically) had less influence on Romanian principalities than the ottomans, hapsburgs or the balkans. We are a melting pot,but even in the romanian Moldova we have more in common with the balkans than we do with eastern europe.
All our history we were involved in balkan events, from the Nicopole crusade to the Balkan Wars .But all of a sudden after Stalin took over us we are supposed to be eastern europeans just because the russians decided so?
If you want to see what Romania with true eastern european influence looks like take a peek at Rep.Moldova.Despite speaking the same language we have little in common with them culturally wise, maybe Chișinău being the only exception. And I say this as someone who has a moldovan parent and spent half my life on the eastern bank of the Prut.
floare_salbatica@reddit
What are you talking about? We have A LOT in common with people from Moldova! We're basically the same people, they just have a stronger accent and some Russian words in the mix. You must be tripping to deny this!
OkRepresentative4603@reddit
I am sorry but you really can't say Moldova and Bukovina "has less in common with eastern europe and more in common with central europe" and you certainly can't say that this part of Romania has less influence from eastern european countries than the Ottoman and Habsburg Empire and the Balkans because you'll just deny some historical important facts, which are the fact that Principality of Moldova was a buffer state between the South AND the east. We LITERALLY lived next to the Polish and Lithuanian Empires, Bukovina was part of Kievan Rus before the mongols arrived, there has been an intercultural mix between Moldova and Ukraine for centuries just because of that.
You can't deny that both the Balkan and eastern european culture had an EQUAL impact on the culture from this region. Idk but my opinion stands differently than yours which is fine, and that is that I believe Bukovinians have more in common with Ukrainians, Slovak and Polish people than they do with Macedonians and Bulgarians simply because Bukovina and Moldova are closer geographically to these countries and there has been a lot of cultural exchange between them.
The time Bukovina was under the Habsburg empire influenced the local architecture and the local population, but all the Hungarians and Saxons left anyway after ww2 so what difference does it make anyway lol
WolfGroundbreaking36@reddit
I'm fall in love in Bukovina (both parts UA and RO). Such mix of: Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Austria, Jews, Balkans, Turkey, Carpatian "koloryt" of Hutsuls and Armenia)
Mamalyga its gomething not from the Earth. IDK who invented but love it so much.
OkRepresentative4603@reddit
Oooh yes, mamaliga is traditionally eaten all throughout Romania. But here in Bukovina we also eat it with sour cream and strawberry or other local forest berries, we also have "holobâca", there's also mamaliga with "tochitura". But my favorite one is the traditional romanian and hutsul recipe called "balmoș" where you put cheese in the mamaliga admixture and we also eat that with sour cream haha
WolfGroundbreaking36@reddit
I tasted it with white cheese, and "shvkvarky", its looks like small pieces of grilled becon. In Ukraine that shkvarky are also a part and addition to "varenyky" - popular ukrainian food. Dumplings with potatos inside.
OkRepresentative4603@reddit
We eat it the same way here as well lol. We say "jumeri" to shkvarky and "colțunași" to varenyky. Food and culture don't care about modern borders haha
WolfGroundbreaking36@reddit
Give me a five man))) Im so happy you know it!) I love it, specially with "Smetana", it means Sour Cream)))
OkRepresentative4603@reddit
Omg we say "smântână" to sour cream:))) i love seeing all these similarities between bordering countries.
Hot_Accident196@reddit
Bulgaria and Greece are Balkan and not ex-yugo…
floare_salbatica@reddit
I didn't say that and I didn't say that Bulgaria isn't a part of the Balkans either. But there is a lot of stereotyping when people think of the Balkan area and that's the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about it: former Yugoslavia. They share a past I don't directly relate to. And I don't recall ever being mentioned in history or geography books that Romania is a Balkan country. Us speaking a Latin language makes us even more of an oddball.
thanasis87kav@reddit
Greece is also transregional since its majority is facing Mediterranean Sea and Aegean archipelago is only Mediterranean
Last_Auslender@reddit
Nah, you guys are Balkans 2 or East Europe.
When somebody says Central Europe in my mind is Austrians, poshy Cechs, Slovaks and thats it.
Worried-Buffalo-5770@reddit
And Hungarians
floare_salbatica@reddit
Who said anything about being Central Europe? 🤭
vaskopopa@reddit
Bad reputation for the “Balkans” comes from Western European jealousy. They look at us and realise there is nothing they can do to compensate for their inadequacy so they invent a “stereotype “.
Extension-Service587@reddit
Good joke
vaskopopa@reddit
Not a joke at all. I have lived in Western Europe and USA most of my adult life and I can spot my fellow Balkan people from a mile away. Usually taller and better looking (men and women) and more confident, and yet not arrogant. The stereotype is something they invented to make them feel good about how they feel about themselves. Just like the stereotype of “lazy” southern Europeans who have their siestas all the long.
mao_dze_dun@reddit
I mean, most of the actual Balkan mountain is in Bulgaria, but sure... Also Greece and Albania are probably going: "Am I a joke to you?"
SOHONEYSAME@reddit
no,
we aren't. lol.
majority of Greeks do NOT consider Greece Balkan.
Western Europeans, Americans, (& even people like OP) also don't.
it's only online subs like here, (who also consider Turkey Balkan, lol) that do.
mao_dze_dun@reddit
You do realize Greece claiming not being part of the Balkans makes as much sense as somebody claiming Scotland is not part of Britain, right? My proof? A map. Any map.
IdealJaded9298@reddit
I can’t understand why Greeks,Croats and Slovenians are even on this sub if you’re not Balkan then why are you still here? And it’s not like you’re interested in the Balkans because I’ve seen your comments and they come off as passive-aggressive especially towards Turks which haven’t done anything to you, so on that note I wonder why this sub gets bombarded with questions about Greece and Greeks, you and your Greek friends go do that on askgreece and leave us alone
BankBackground2496@reddit
I grew up in Constanta with Vlachs, Tatars, Turks and Greeks, Geographically Balkans are up to Danube.
Some Romanians reject the Balkan identity (rightfully if they are not from the South), I don't.
floare_salbatica@reddit
You are a totally different story, I think Dobrogea is really the most intriguing part of the country from this pov, a real melting pot.
RestepcaMahAutoritha@reddit
Thank you someone with common sense. Just like Russia is a trans-continental country, Romania is a trans-regional country. I guess people don't like that idea and they want everything to fit perfectly in perfect boxes.
iSebastian1@reddit
In fairness people also fail to realize that driving from Nadlac (Romania) to Constanta (Romania) takes around 11 hours... Romania is big lol
Dear-Ad1582@reddit
It ain't that big... just shoot-up infrastructure :)
iSebastian1@reddit
The infrastructure is perfectly fine, you won't find maybe 5 small potholes throughout the entire journey if you take the standard Google maps route.
The problem is the 1000 villages you have to drive through that all have 50km/h speed limits, when many really shouldn't as you can safely drive at 70km/h as the roads are wide with enough visibility.
PhastasFlames@reddit
Romania isn’t big, it actually is the infrastructure that’s an issue. There is maybe one highway and its main focus is Bucharest. It does spread out a bit from Bucharest but it doesn’t go far.
ciobanica@reddit
Respecting the speed limit in villages... how unpatriotic.
FeelsLikeTrumanShow@reddit
BMW goes BRRRRR
iSebastian1@reddit
Indeed. My bad.
ProfitUpstairs687@reddit
..the infrastructure is ass; if you would drive the same distance from iasi to bucharest (6-8 hours) in a more developed country (still talking abt the infrastructure here, sebi) it would take you max 3 hours
USS_Nimitz@reddit
there is no war in ba sing se
randomthoughts66@reddit
The speed limits are also for noise reduction and pedestrian protection as many villages lack proper sidewalks and crosswalks and people just walk on the edge of the street and jaywalk.
Edges of the country just shouldn't be connected by regional roads that go through these villages, but rather highways or other types of express roads that go past the villages. This has been a major infrastructure drawback that makes Romania unappealing for production as transport takes longer and ends up being more expensive. Some years back, trucks would prefer to take longer routes than go through Romania which took way too longer despite the shorter distance.
Dear-Ad1582@reddit
Dude, have you been on A10? Them holes are rather concerning...
Savings_Pin749@reddit
Not concerning, but life threatening
Gstreamz@reddit
His point still stands that Romania isn’t THAT big. If Romania were a modern, properly developed country it wouldn’t take 11 hours to drive <900km.
There may not be potholes but not having major roadways and by far the slowest trains I’ve ever ridden on are still definitely under the umbrella of “shitty infrastructure”
And let’s not get started on the non-transport related infrastructure like the buildings and the plumbing 😂
Wooden_Practice_727@reddit
Ehh, you could've said that 10-15 years ago. At this moment and especially after 2026 & 2027, the infrastructure will be just fine.
californiaschinken@reddit
Bucharest to vama veche can take 9-10 hour in summer. It s the lack of infrastructure and roads.
If there a full season and festival time in costinesti it can take over 11 hours with a bit of "luck"
abluberrypie@reddit
What Romania are you from? 😂 To Vama Veche takes 3-4 hours. It took me 9 hours from Bucharest to Greece, it does not take that long to the beach.
Dense-Road2459@reddit
Indeed it is a big country but the 11 hours drive is not necessarily that long only because the country is big but because of the poor infrastructure
BWC_Python@reddit
Rusia is not in Europe/Eu. Ukraine is East Europe partially.
RestepcaMahAutoritha@reddit
What do you mean Russia is not in Europe?
BWC_Python@reddit
Exactly this. It s beyond the border of EU and Europe as we see it. If the romans would be still alive with their Empire, they would consider Russia to be barbarian Land outside Empire Borders.
DCSmaug@reddit
Dude, Europe is a continent that contains countries outside of European Union.
The Roman Empire wasn't a continent btw.
And calling someone a barbarian is just an insult that doesn't invalidate a country's place in a space. Btw, did you also knew that the Roman Empire refered to people of "Germania" which is modern day's Germany as barbarians? Are germans not in Europe just because the Roman Empire called them barbarians?
floare_salbatica@reddit

Geographically Europe as a continent stretches to the Ural mountains. The politics don't matter. Russia is a transcontinental country and a portion of it is in Europe.
Important_Ad_7537@reddit
Geograpghically, there is no continent as Europe. It is a cultural name given by Europeans to separate themselves from the others. The continent's name is Eurasia.
Alone_Detail_8994@reddit
Geologically yes, the tectonic plate is eurasia, but geographically, due to the harsh conditions in trekking the urals, the continent has that border. It's the same as there are no borders between countries but those set by people.

Even in politics, Russia is in Europe. They were a member of the European Council until 2022 (which is not part of the EU, it is another international agency, and includes all EU countries + others, line Norway, Switzerland, UK, Iceland, Ukraine, and extends to the amegins of Europe, to Georgia, Armenia, Turkey and formerly to Russia).

As someone who has lived in all big geographical areas of the country (i.e.: I was born in central Transylvania, moved to Bucovina during my teens, then to Bucharest at 18) I can honestly say that this is the most accurate description on the country. Obviously there are similarities between all provinces and also with neighbouring countries, but the bigger picture is that Transylvania is culturally and geographically în Central Europe, Walachia is more towards the Balkans while Moldova has a more Eastern European feel.

It depends on the granularity of division you apply .

But if you dive into he headache issue , oh boy :

GroundZeroMstrNDR@reddit
Yes, pretty much that. The whole pannonian region has a similar vibe, be it in hungary, romania, slovakia or parts of serbia, croatia, austria or slovenia. Wallachia feels different to that. I've never been to moldavia so can't comment
terra_GOD_404@reddit

TripluStecherSmecher@reddit
It"s anathor one: Dobrudja, they are Otomans
PomegranateOk2600@reddit
I would also think Wallachia to be Balkanic just to draw the map better, because otherwise it is actually eastern european or central european.
Mysterious-Put1459@reddit
It's not
PomegranateOk2600@reddit
because geographically, Romania was never a Balkan country, only Dobruja which I see is no longer included anymore. Actually we have a bigger part (Transilvania) which is in central Europe, than in the Balkans. I usually think about as eastern europe, but I have no problem in being included in the Balkans or Central Europe.
WolfGroundbreaking36@reddit
Everything are on the east of Italy, Germany and Ausrtia - are Eastern Europe (balkans too).
Geographically - you can check the map. If you claim that Romania is a Central Europe, it means than Uzbekistan or Kyrgystan are the Eastern Europe.
PomegranateOk2600@reddit
If we start seeing things like this then yes, Romania is a central European country. Go an look on the bordes of Europe and see how far from the west and east is romania

WolfGroundbreaking36@reddit
There's no Central Europe in classic interpretation. There's west, east, north and south Europe.
Whats the reason and mentality to shift definition? Everyone knows Romania is eastern europe, but only some romanians sure that no) And most funny started to discuss about basic things)
This is a same like Romania is linking their roots to Roman Empire. Another internal myth, it sounds to non-romanians like vikings are from african tribe mamamumba )
HARTIEXX_XXIGIENICA@reddit
Southeastern 🥰
Because it's true. Romanians are descended from Daco-Romans. The population mixed with south slavic people over the decades, but that does not change what it started as.
Don't wanna sound like a sissy, but that's kind of insulting for both romanians and africans.

Hungarians also btw have some complexes, Attila, Hun empire, which dissapeared 550 years before proto magyars crossed the Carpathian mountains)
HARTIEXX_XXIGIENICA@reddit
It is part of our official history tf? During the Roman period, the dacians were heavily romanized and iver the years they became daco-romans.
Literally nothing to do with Ceaușescu. The daco-roman identity was promoted way before this guy was even born.
Fact-check for yourself and you'll find out that romanians are descendands of daco-romans. Just because you think it's not possible doesn't make your belief factually valid in any way.
Btw, the Roman ancestry is in no way recent, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist at all.
WolfGroundbreaking36@reddit
Fastchecking told me in 271 year romans emperors finally left this territory, but locals continue the latin protolanguage. Then - Hun empire come, then - migration to the south balcans, then slavic migrations in, then - slavic migration out, then - migration from south balkans in, then - migrations or roms from India in.
With the development of agriculture in the 13th–14th centuries, a nomadic lifestyle was replaced by a settled one, and this mix eventually became fully blended.
If you follow the chain and timeline of this historical events?
HARTIEXX_XXIGIENICA@reddit
I get that you're not a native english speaker, which is fine, I ain't either, but I really can't make up what you're trying to say
WolfGroundbreaking36@reddit
Roman Empire and Romania is the same link like Tunis and Norway (Vikings). You can make the same link between each other ) Vikings has a colony in Tunis.
HARTIEXX_XXIGIENICA@reddit
I'm curious who do you think are the ancestors of romanians if not the daco-romans?
WolfGroundbreaking36@reddit
ahahaha i think its irony. Who are Daco-Romans, another invention of romanian historocians?
Dacia was province on the border where roman empire founded a colony, like germans in Sibiu. So why you are not ancestors of Germans?? Bulgarians owned ENTIRE modern romanian territory 700 years later after Roman Emperors which was ON a SMALL that piece of your land. So why you are not ancestors of Bulgarians?
The timeline: Roman Empire (small piece), then huns, then proto-Slavic, Bulgarians, then roms (gypsies), then ottomans. Okay, lets create the idea, where we come from.
And they decide: okay, we already have bulgaria, we have slavic around us, we will be not unique, we will distance from roms, becuase they are from India, and... you know... 1900 years ago 150 roman emperors made a border colony in our territory, lets become themselves. Lets quickly rename Dacians to Daco-Romans and put by ears this episode as our historical paradigm.
Youre are not alone. In 1800 Moscow Tsardom renamed themselves to Russia, to claim a link themselves with Rus and distance from tatars and mongols, because it was more prestigious to be europeans. No one cares that Rus dissapeared in 1241 and Moscow mongolian ulus arrived in 15th centure.
But, they create a link with 300 hundred gaps from completely another land, but you guys overperformed them: 1700 years )
HARTIEXX_XXIGIENICA@reddit
You genuinely believe romanians have roma ancestry?

Personally me? No. I love Romania and have been 50 times there (in Alba Julia too). And i love it. And i know the most popular stereotype outside romania and i heard it many times, but i never thought same - i like to visit country meet the people and feel the vibe.
Romanians are great people all of them (my personal experience and i don't care what other said). Honestly I was wondered such big country, with such variety of cultures sometimes follows the myphs and making selfidentification genealory in such strange way.
I was in Croatia, at Split, for example, it was non-border big emperor city, but they never claimed they are roman ancestry - they said, yes they was here, and goes away, while having 10000 more reasons to claim this. But romanians...
HARTIEXX_XXIGIENICA@reddit
Glad you don't believe in the stereotypes man!
WolfGroundbreaking36@reddit
Be realistic, try to check everything critically. This is my way. You a good polite person, the ploblems with corruption because you have a growth like a Poland and tragic modern history but everything in Romania will be better. But avoid everything from the past which are non-realistic. Some guys shows the maps from a school books of geography with wrong information - other laughning from it, so this is here, in reddit, but how many irrelevant information can be in other books? And then imagine intellectual reallife discussion, and guys sharing the information from the school which are not correct with serious face to non-romanians, and how it looks like from the side.
And, be ready, than in perspective, Eastern Europe will become more dominant from Western. Everything cames here. Just compare any town from west and east (France, Germany or Belguim with Poland, Ukraine or Romania). You have more clear streets than in Belguim or France, less homeless people, more security in society, much less migrants without job etc....
WolfGroundbreaking36@reddit
I don't wanna ruin your mood but deep dive to history will show that Roman Empire was like Empire - it was a metropoly-colony negotiations for several centuries, and the roman etnicity never existed. It was union of laws, econony, military usage of local tribes on western, eastern and south europe, middle east and north africa. There was not hundreds - but thousands of tribes with only common metropoly.
You guys put one of them (which was only partically on border btw) was used by empire like a frontier from the independed wild tribes on the north and east - only in devensive puprose - like a paradigm and bulding an ancestry from it.

nobody outside of romania has ever thought of you as central europe, look at a map
also the idea that romania is closer culturally to Czechia and Poland than to Bulgaria is ridiculous
ObsessedChutoy3@reddit
Everyone has always considered Transylvania as central europe, and it looks like Hungary Czechia more than it does Bulgaria Greece. That's what they are talking about, Romania is not geographically or culturally in 1 region. It's located in "Southeast Europe" that's about all you can say, but culturally for the essence of the country as a whole it is Balkan more than anything. Pomegranate is saying the geographical fact that there is more of Romania in central europe than there is in the geographical Balkans, which is true. But nobody says that Romania the whole country is central europe in any way, except that one memed textbook from 40 years ago
WolfGroundbreaking36@reddit
Hungary is eastern europe but Transilvania is no?
ObsessedChutoy3@reddit
Hungary is usually considered central europe, if you look up a map of central europe hungary is almost always there. Not saying it's correct or wrong

It is now a trend to be more west for anyone in EU, so Romania is called central Europe, but c'mon guys look at the map, Romania is Eastern Europe same as whole Balkans and that is fine
Macedonianboss@reddit
The whole Balkans isn't Eastern Europe but southern. Draw a line from the center of the balkans to the urals and then to portugal/ireland and the urals are a bit further than the western border of europe. Speak for Serbia, not for the entire balkans.
PomegranateOk2600@reddit
Yea, historically the only two countries in the balkans that never fought against one another probably. Some intellectuals here started actually proposing, which I start to actually agree, that because of the globalization and being part of the European Union, the old split of the Europe is becoming less and less present, and most of europeans and now switching towards a western hemisphere identity.
MlsgONE@reddit
But we did? Serbian jandarmerie troops took over hundreds of villages post-ww1 during the trianon land changing, we had to call the FRENCH army to help us drive them out beyond the newly drawn border.
Baly999@reddit
Also after Kosovo, the serbs were vassals of the Ottomans and were frequently called upon by the turks to fight in their wars as vanguard. In 1396 we fought against them at Nicopolis and Mircea fought them at Rovine in 1395 for example.
Even now, they are an aggresively pro-russian state and Russia is public enemy no.1 in Romania. We were friendly to the serbian people yes, but the serbian states have been either hostile or neutral to romanian state entities more often than not through their history.

That is also not true, our president is mega kurva for everyone. Although he is by nature right wing, but he would sell his ass for one more year in power, it doesn’t matter to who
Baly999@reddit
EU tries, and fails, to lure him to their side, away from the russians, because having another russian assett in this part of Europe is bad for business. Serbia has been pro-russian and lately pro-China since NATO did a woopsie in Kosovo. More proof of this is the shit-stirring he's doing with the arming of NATO members of Croatia and Albania. Little does Vucics character matter when his actions allign him clearly with the anti-NATO block.
Motor_Papaya5415@reddit
Bro he gave Kosovo away without a single blink lol other stuff is just a charade for his demented voters. Fortunately he will be old news within a year or so, just hopefully EU stops to praise him as a democrat and support election theft
Baly999@reddit
What? I'm talking about the NATO bombings in the 90s. Idk what you're talking about.
Motor_Papaya5415@reddit
It’s much different times than Milosevic’s regime. Back then it had something to do with political compass. Now it’s just transactions and ass selling Vucic does
Baly999@reddit
It's got nothing to do with anything you're saying. NATO gave Serbia a reason to be perpetually in the opposing side when they bombed them in the 90s. This is the stance of every non-reformer that has the power, little does it matter for what reason. Their voters hate NATO for that war so that's what they peddle.

PomegranateOk2600@reddit
Probably not, one serb guy was telling me back in the past how serbs got a part of Banat and we lost it. Some stuff about the american president or something, and he was so happy about it.
I didn't want to stop his happiness by telling him I don't remember us caring about Banat that much in the history. Also it would make no sense for us to have territory just across the capital of a neighbouring country.
Smart_Pomegranate825@reddit
I mean we did got part of Banat based on people who settled there and generally settled in part of what was before Austro-Hungary. Not only Banat but whole Vojvodina. We have huge connections to Timisoara, some of our historically famous people lived there, we have connections to the churches etc, but anyone being proud about that piece of land is just crazy. And I am saying that as a person who lives In Banat, it's just a shitty piece of land on both sides. Kudos to everyone who really love it, they are quite special folks 😁
PomegranateOk2600@reddit
we have some few people with serbian ancestry from there, but it looks like they care less than some romanians do. I had a woman colleague in university that said that her boyfriend is serb and stuff, he was romanian but with serb ancestry. Honorary balkan. Not by geography, but by culture
lipiancarlliam@reddit
Historically, there were two definitions of "Balkans". The first one was "anything southern of Sava and Danube", which means that Romania is not Balkan at all. The second one was "anything southern of the Trieste-Constanta line", which would include the southern part of Romania. Culturally, they are Balkan, but for all intents and purposes, they consider themselves central-european.
oocalan@reddit

Neutrinomind@reddit
Romania is balkan, but not as balkan as say North Macedonia, there are levels to this
WorriedGap6983@reddit
sure, ive been to bucarest and timisoara as well as iasi, the only truly cultivated place was iasi, bucarest is as balkan as it gets and no offense it genuinely is extremely nasty, i do not find it to be any less balkan to belgrade or sofia, hell id say belgrade and sofia are miles ahead of bucarest, yet they are as balkan as it gets, im from sofia, it has it’s rough parts but my god bucarest is so unmaintained it’s insane, ofc it’s not as bad as athens or pristina but those we don’t talk about
Neutrinomind@reddit
So you do not think Iasi and Timisoara are that balkan(i agree), but think Bucharest is because it is a shitty city. It is a pretty shitty city, still less balkan than Sofia and Belgrade, just by virtue of history and geography, if you do not find the city pleasant.
WorriedGap6983@reddit
my friend, all of them are balkan, idk what is with romanians and their inferiority complex of pretending they are something they are not and being ashamed about being from the balkans is quite weird but you do you i guess
Neutrinomind@reddit
I wouldn’t be here if i didn’t think Romania wasn’t balkan. I am saying however Romania is not a core balkan country which is to be expected, Romania is after all situated at the periphery and didn’t have particularities you guys south of the danube had. You being a bulgarian ot checks out however, you guys are always vexed we may not be considering ourselves Balkan™️
WorriedGap6983@reddit
this is simply not true tho, there is nothing differentiating romania from other balkan states, it literally used to be bulgarian territory for hundreds of years, you guys try to paint yourself as something different than what you really are, no romania is not central european nor us it this unique concept of different european cultures, arguably it’s more balkan than other places such as slovenia, you guys are just being weird about it
Neutrinomind@reddit
For once we don’t have any muslim legacy, something you and others from balkans have in abundance. Our urban governance was rather polish-hungarian in character, our architecture styles have different influences from yours despite being largely byzantine as well. We maintained a ruling class of nobles other post ottoman states bar maybe greece did not have and there are other differences i won’t bother with. Transylvania is not balkan whatever you may want to think.
Just let the bulgarian being butthurt however, lol. Your however many centuries, millenia or whatever spn you want to give to bulgarian rule here means jack shit when you didn’t do anything with our provinces

WorriedGap6983@reddit
i never said that, i mentioned that cities in a worse state than other balkan cities are painted as “more european” whatever that means when in reality Balkan cities are beautiful and places like cluj or bucarest have no standing on pretending to be something they are not

Names-Are-Confusing@reddit
Zagreb is not Balkan.
xVladdy@reddit
Depends on how you look at it.
Geographically? As someone already stated:
Muntenia + Oltenia = Balkan
Moldova, Bucovina = Eastern
Transylvania = Central
Crisana, Maramures = Central
Banat = Balkan
Dobrogea = Balkan
But culturally? It's all Balkans. No matter how hard you try to stretch it that noooo, we're Central Europeans, when you take a stroll through the South and Moldova, both big cities and forgotten villages, you'll find more similarities with Bulgaria and Serbia because we're all dirt poor with the most fulfilling social interaction being a two-legged trip to the local drunk hotspot with a four-legged return if you don't happen to fall in a side ditch.
Transylvania with all the other regions that were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire could, however, be considered Central European. Brasov, Cluj, Oradea, Sibiu, Sighișoara, Reșița, Timișoara, Alba-Iulia, Hunedoara, Sfântu Gheorghe, Miercurea-Ciuc are all soooooo different both culturally and socially to Bucharest, Ploiești, Craiova, Constanța, Iași, Târgoviște, Galați, Brăila, Pitești. Trust me, I've lived in Oradea and you could easily pass it for a city anywhere but in Romania.
freakybird99@reddit
Geographically romania is barely balkan with dobruja being its only region in balkans
Culturally romania is very balkan, showing a lot of similarities with the other countries in balkan regions. More than central or eastern europe.
Where balkans start is a debated topic. All i can say is it ends in çatalca(in istanbul)
PomegranateOk2600@reddit
haha, when did Istanbul stoped being part of the balkans? Balkans end at the bosporus straight, or what where is Istanbul? In Asia Minor?
Except for that, yes, because of the ottomans ruled in 2/3 of the country, we are for sure part of the balkans culturally.
freakybird99@reddit
Culturally, istanbul really lost its balkan identity. Its more middle eastern than balkan culturally. Some anatolian cities like İzmir and Bursa are culturally way more balkan than İstanbul. Geographically its still balkan though.
My city, Bursa has significant balkan influence from balkan turk migrants coming here. I wouldnt call it balkan but i'd call it a city with a significant balkan influence. Im not gonna talk about izmir because im not as informed on the subject
dies-IRS@reddit
This is not true. Most Istanbulites definitely do not follow a Middle Eastern way of living. I go to my neighborhood bakery for a croissant for breakfast, and then to the pub in the evening. I don’t think that is typical for the Middle East
samvarr@reddit
It’s definitely not more middle eastern than Balkan culturally lol
PomegranateOk2600@reddit
I'm pretty sure there is no consensus regarding this, when I lived in Istanbul, some people there felt more european than even balkan. Actually asian side felt more european than the european one which looked like a ghetto in some parts.
Now when I look on their stories they travel and live in Europe. But maybe it was just my case because I studied in a private university.
To me Istanbul felt more like mix, but certainly didn't felt like Ankara or Adana which really felt like middle eastern
Dear-Ad1582@reddit
It's Balkans ... we have no stinkin' "Consensus" in our vocabulary.
freakybird99@reddit
I wouldnt be surprised if theres a lot of french influence in istanbul mainly due to ottoman era. But the city is barely balkan. Fatih(historic city) is definitely middle eastern. And even though parts like beşiktaş can be surprisingly close to western european parts like bağcılar can be really terrible regardless of culture. But those places have a lot of eastern migration which culturally effect the city significantly.
Tricky-Original6168@reddit
in that sense İzmir is as bad as İstanbul and can't be called culturally balkan, which is not anyways

It's just as Balkan as Turkey, Kazakstan and Azerbaidjan are European. 2 counties out of 41 are in the Balkans proper. Culturally, it's more or less the same.
Then, we have cases like Armenia and Georgia which are entirely outside the continents limits yet are considered Europe based on culture alone.
gottliebtmich@reddit
Sometimes I see a map of "Central Europe" whose area is awkwardly extended to Romania and Bulgaria. I wonder what the logic behind is. Sure, you might argue they're not Eastern Europe cause they are not former Soviet, but that does not mean you have to forcibly squeeze these countries into Central Europe.
CorrectAssist1211@reddit
Technically central since Europe ends at the Urals, that's 2700 km away compared to Ireland which is 2500 km away. So the most western part of Europe is closer than the most eastern.
Culturally, it's referred as Eastern, since some people like to endlessly repeat nonsense they heard from others left over from a time when there was a political divide.

Geographically, the northern border of the Balkans stands at the Danube and Sava rivers, which would make only Dobruja a part of the Balkans in Romania Geographically.
JazzlikeAsk8039@reddit
Does Eastern Europe not even cross your minds anymore?
Substratas@reddit (OP)
I thought “Eastern Europe” meant European countries that were part of the Soviet Union.
In a broader definition it includes Visegrád countries (Central + East) & the Balkans (South + East) too.
JazzlikeAsk8039@reddit
It refers to countries that were under communism in Europe that's how the term always was, but it got associated with "poverty" and everyone wants to be anything else than Eastern Europe
in simpler terms: if countri has communist apartment blocks, it eastern euro
TinyAsianMachine@reddit
Im about 30 and I remember when Greece wasn't considered part of the Balkans.
Any_Interest2789@reddit
I use the 45th parallel as a rule of thumb, works for my headcannon, south of it balkan, north of it not balkan, easy to remember, exactly half way between the north pole and the equator https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circles_of_latitude_between_the_40th_parallel_north_and_the_45th_parallel_north#/maplink/4
echonia@reddit
This map basically is wrong as part of Turkish Thrace is also part of Balkans and parts of Romania also. Google maps prioritises the countries apparently per Balkan surface.
External_Let230@reddit
Central in the streets, Balkan in the sheets

New-Weekend-8189@reddit
Romania is so F-ed that not even the Balkans will have us.
skibidi_blop666@reddit

ComfortableGlad6766@reddit
slovenians are not included cus they are sexy femboys😍
Astro_Onyx@reddit
Romania can't be considered as a part of central Europe, at all . If not Balkan then Easter Europe. However Romania is still Balkans 💯
RoleFine1372@reddit
If you ask our history: we are central Europe (quite a lie, but not entirely). If you ask our history we were soviets (half a lie). If you ask others about our music and style, we might be balkans (1/3 lie, because less than 10% of the country is UNDER the Danube, most of the Danube reprezents the border).
So what are we? We are not latins either, Romans conquered just a little bit.
You can consider whatever you want about Romania. There are many things to say, but few are concrete: not everyone is a thief, we can be polite, have a great hospitality with great food included 😋, we have different styles of architecture that don’t always blend, but makes us unique, we have some smart people, we have a huge IT industry, we produce cars, which are best sellers in Europe. We are funny and we know how to have fun, only the jokes kept us together during the hard times.
So yes, you can still hear some balkan hits coming from România. You can eat some balkan food too. You can feel like in a fairytail on some cities. And you can find charming and interesting people.
Greetings from România!🇷🇴
outofhom@reddit
How dare google exclude Turkiye
BerlinSam@reddit
I have never considered Romania as part of the Balkans. Same as Greece which is often labelled as such.
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
I often wonder about that too.
So, the Banat region is definitely not part of the Balkans. Because Banat was part of Austria-Hungary and once a German settlement area for the Banat Swabians.
Although Ada Kaleh, the Turkish island, probably didn't belong to the Balkans either.
What definitely has a Balkan character is Dobruja, where the Muslim minority of Tatar Turks and Muslim Roma live.
aalex5070@reddit
They are Balkan.
Every country in that region was under ottoman rule or austro hungary so they all share some kind of similarities ,even if geographically it isn’t “correct”. I would consider Republic of Moldova balkan too.
Efficient-Job-2858@reddit
Why do ppl say Austria-Hungary and not the Habsburg Empire?😆 The latter spans over 6 centuries while the former is its 50 year finale. Also weird from a Hungarian perspective as we spent more time being under Habsburg rule than being allied with them.
Extension-Service587@reddit
Would you have prefer to be under Ottoman boot?
Dear-Ad1582@reddit
That's a good point ! It is weird to consider , but somehow those 50 tried to erase the previous 600.. Insisting on duality ... and Hungarian kingdom and such.
CallmeChapybara@reddit
Oh, nice, I didn't knew this difference. Cheers for the info
timisorean_02@reddit
Well, sad to hear that.
PomegranateOk2600@reddit
probably because it's more recent.
PomegranateOk2600@reddit
So hungary and slovakia would also fit here
Responsible-Door-634@reddit
It looks the same to me too.
emuu1@reddit
I would argue that anything north of the Sava river in Croatia and Serbia isn't geographically Balkans anymore (the mountains end) but they're still culturally 100% Balkans.
JohnVonSpeedo@reddit
Eastern europe
Spahix95@reddit
Well this google map is dumb because it does not include Thrace either.
pepozinho@reddit
Only Romanians think their country is central Europe, it's 100% eastern Europe.
Shajrta@reddit
I had the same thought, after I went to Transilvanija I think it is quite central european. The cities, that is.
pepozinho@reddit
I'm talking in a geographic sense.
Dear-Ad1582@reddit
you came to Balkan sub to talk about sense or geography?
Balkan is a state of mind!!!
GoodMoney888@reddit
The way I see it Romania is a latin eastern european country between balkans but not balkan.

theyanardageffect@reddit
It is considered balkan because it was under Ottoman Empire rule.
liberalskateboardist@reddit
yugoslavia+romania+bulgaria - big balkan federation, it would be a powerhouse of europe
nikolapc@reddit
These are countries fully in the balkans, except Voivodina is not Balkan. European Turkey is Balkan, half of Slovenia, and Romania and Hungary are honorary.
Esdoorn-Acer@reddit
Half of Slovenia is Balkan? How?
nikolapc@reddit
Sava River.
Esdoorn-Acer@reddit
The Sava River is not the only defining boundary. The most commonly cited borders follow the Kupa, Sava and Danube rivers. That’s a delineation supported by multiple sources. Relying on a single river is geographically inadequate. Moreover the Sava itself originates in the Alpine region which is not considered part of the Balkans.
nikolapc@reddit
Slavoj Zizek explains it best :)
Esdoorn-Acer@reddit
Oh yes, the famous geographer and historian. Balkan women get beaten and they like it, right?
ozneoknarf@reddit
I would say not consider Walachia as Balkans
Dazzling-Session-181@reddit
Romania is Balkan. Strictly geographically speaking - only Northern Dobrudja. The rest is Eastern Europe. But that is only geographically. Culturally it is 90% Balkan - excluding some Hungarians, who culturally are more Central-European.
Also, Turkey (or at least the Western and Middle part of it) is also Balkan by its cultural traits. Also Slovenia is like 1/3-1/2 Balkan geographically and culturally kinda Balkan as well - stop trying to pretend otherwise, Slovenians. We love you, despite you being femboys. Even a very very small part of Italy is geographically part of the Balkans. So Italy is also a Balkan country.
Sure-Way-2409@reddit
I consider everyone balkan that fits within the peninsula so the whole europe is balkan 3 parts of it is water and 1 part attached to their continent (Asia) lol
Sasayego@reddit
Ask the Turks, they know, they named you (the Balkans). Lol
Mehehelu@reddit
See a map of the former Ottoman possessions and vassals, that would be it. Of course Hungary wouldn't be considered Balkan by default but there are nuances.
Born-Statistician817@reddit
Romania is eastern europe
BillGates121193@reddit
Theoretically we are not a Balkan country.
We are located in Central Europe geographically

I don't think Vojvodina and part of northern Croatia is in Balkan.
RammRras@reddit
Having met a lot of them and being also friends with Romanians although never been in the country I'd say they are fully Balkan! Hearing stories of their villages is like hearing of my country highlands.

Extension-Detail-258@reddit
Man even Hungary is balcan. The fancy name is SouthEastern Europe, to avoid the naming.
The peninsula goes up to Ukraine from the other side.
AttemptFirst6345@reddit
Regardless of geography I would include Romania as a Balkan culture.
AdversaryNugget2856@reddit
Vojvodina is not balkan

1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = Central + Balkans + Eastern. We are truly multicultural without the engineers and scholars.

MIMADANMEI@reddit
Central🤣
StevenAdamsInDallas@reddit
Culturally, in Transylvania, there's no Balkan or Eastern influence (at least not as much as I see in Wallachia and Moldova), feels pretty close to what I've seen in Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia.
1 word with an emoji response. Transylvania alone is larger than Serbia.
MIMADANMEI@reddit
Never heard that romania would ever be consideret central
StevenAdamsInDallas@reddit
Not as a whole, but certain parts are more predisposed to be called central based on culture.
You call Hungary central Europe but somehow the border ends at Oradea/Nagyvarad.
muecugem@reddit
Not balkan geographically, balkan in spirit.

I remember in school we were taught that because of the border with the Black see, southern Romania is indeed balkan. But then again, the king in the balkans is Florin Salam and the anthem is Saint Tropez so who am I to judge if the people are balkan at soul.
BatGloabeCuPiciorul@reddit
I think geographically the Balkans are considered to stretch up to the Danube, so maybe that's why it shows up like that. Culturally though, Romania is pretty balkanised.

I'd consider it Balkan. I believe it's also a Turkish word and Romania was under Ottoman rule for 4 centuries so therefore I see it as Balkan.
Culturally I think it is more align with the Balkans than anywhere else.
Central Europe I always viewed as Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Czechia, Germany, Poland and Luxembourg.
PomegranateOk2600@reddit
Poland is eastern european all day. I actually feel like we are a mix between east, center and south. But on a regular discussion we refer to us as being either balkan either latin
