Jailhouse or Nursing Home? Guess.

I always have a backup meal. I’m not feeding this to my diabetic mother.
And there was no staff available to feed her anyway.
katjoy63@reddit
I was going to say a nursing home since the hot dog was cut up
XCryptoX@reddit
I feel like cut up hotdogs is a choking hazard. Isn't like carrots and hotdogs the most choked on foods?
katjoy63@reddit
Hot dogs when they are not cut up down the middle The way these are, it's fine.
Kabambaclot@reddit
Tators look to golden to be jail food
HospitalSuspicious48@reddit
Nursing home. They usually don’t let you photograph your food in jail. (Yes I understand cell phones do get smuggled in, but it’s a waste risking your phone with food pics)
imnotpoopingyouare@reddit
You would be surprised, my tiny shitty county jail has tablets with headphones that can be rented daily and returned before lights out. They had cameras and apps to “FaceTime” with loved ones. (That you had to pay extra for obviously) It’s still a way for the prisons to make money but from what I’ve read it’s a thing in a lot of jails and prisons nowadays.
I only ever heard of it because I did a few days last year. Last time I was in was over 15 years ago for about 2 weeks and they didn’t have them then.
bouquetofashes@reddit
I was going to guess nursing home because the hot dog is cut up.
This is a diabetic meal?!? Um. I'm pretty sure they should be offering something that's... Not this, what the heck.
sunndropps@reddit
Those hotdogs have jaundice
Heathster249@reddit
This is definitely not a suitable meal for a diabetic. I wouldn’t feed this to any human.
imperfcet@reddit
They probably both use the same food service. Based on the crappiness, I'm guessing Aramark.
VisionAri_VA@reddit
Where I work, we used to have Aramark and the food was incredible. We’d have these big holiday meals that people would start lining up for half an hour before the cafeteria opened for lunch.
I’m not going to name-n-shame the company that runs the cafeteria now but their food is just mid on a good day.
Barracuda00@reddit
It was Sodexo for us on the east coast!
Express-Season-6116@reddit
I did 9 years with Aramark at University of Cincinnati. And yes this looks like their work.
Actually if the dogs were grilled instead of steamed or boiled, and the Tots were fried like another 45 seconds to brown a hair and hold form. This would look a lot better.
I left that job. But I do know Aramark got kicked off campus and replaced by Sodexo. Like two years ago.
JoeDonBaker77@reddit
My college cafeteria used Aramark. This was 2005-09. This seems about right. We had the extra bonus of having their staff on site cooking. These people had some….um, interesting backgrounds.
hawkeyes007@reddit
People with criminal records still deserve jobs
rarcham94@reddit
Fun fact, Aramark is a large distributor and food service operator for the private prison system. Many jails and prisons (dependent on location) provide “good time” to inmates who voluntarily take on jobs in their facilities (good time doesn’t guarantee an early release/end of sentence btw). Because the private prison system aren’t typically state or county regulated Aramark is notorious for unpaid/uncompensated labor. Also, I worked for Aramark during college at our larger local arena. They suck.
Over_Contact_5032@reddit
Prisons utilize inmates for most of the work force in the prison, from kitchen duty, laundry, landscape, hazmat clean up, and of course prison industries that manufacture furniture, license plates, eye glasses, etc. Any good time earned from employment (or programs) IS in fact a reduction of ones sentence, unless they are serving a mandatory sentence.
ShortIrishGuy@reddit
I disagree with inmates doing for profit work, but they should indeed be made to the primary workforce for prison upkeep.
honey__harlot@reddit
not to get too deep here but the concept of private prisons is actually such a low-life idea. anyone with any hand in making one is the douchiest loser on the planet.
JoeDonBaker77@reddit
They absolutely do. I apologize for insinuating otherwise in my comment. They did good work with shot food honestly. Johnny the omelette station guy knew his shit.
hawkeyes007@reddit
Wait, Johnny the omelette station guy? Oh fuck no he murders people
JoeDonBaker77@reddit
I’m not shitting you, he did tell me and my roommate he did time for stabbing someone. I’m not sure 1) if he was serious or 2) if the stabbing was of a murderous variety.
He made a great western omelette though.
The more problematic guy was the 40-year-old ginger who used his job as cafeteria czar to hit on undergrads.
Small_Green_Octopus@reddit
"Cafeteria czar" sounds like one of the most unnecessary glorified titles ever.
Should have called him the slop superintendent instead
jraymcmurray@reddit

Maximum_Surprise_103@reddit
I’m in college right now and they switched to Aramark mid year!!! Oh my God it’s horrible, they fired all the lovely food staff, now the food is twice as expensive and shittier. The fridges are always empty and when I went to check the soup there was no soup. I asked for a coffee and they were like “we don’t do coffee”. SMH
Bfab94@reddit
Funny story. I went to culinary school from 2013-2015. I'm no where, PA.
We had an externship with Aramark.
Out of the 80 students I graduated with.
1 went to Aramark. They had that same reputation then and continue to do so. They literally only make money because they fill contracts in institution cooling that no one will fill.
So that's Schools, Prisons, and everything in between.
ebolashuffle@reddit
The company I worked for contracted Aramark for everything. This was an international biotech who could definitely afford better.
turalyawn@reddit
Are they cooking the tots in a tumble dryer?
Same-Suggestion-1936@reddit
For some reason that's how all hospital tots are. Probably because they're not good quality but more likely they they bake them in a pan and portion them with a scoop. Hospitals don't really have fryers, that's why you almost never find one that has French fries, just potato chips and tots
So crumbly to begin with, drier than if you fried them in oil, plus being manhandled while served.
megamisanthropic@reddit
Prisons use prison labor. I've worked in one. Everything cooked in steam vats and stand up ovens.
Majestic_Parsley9156@reddit (OP)
Ummm … no. It’s in house. With whomever they hire and can ask to heat up things or boil a bag. I wish Aramark was within the budget.
ShowMeYourTents@reddit
Get those hotdogs on dialysis
Cythiriya@reddit
At the end of my grandmother's life, she developed Parkinson's and had to move into a nursing home. She also developed diabetes at this time too. I remember visiting her during lunch one day and I was horrified at what they were feeding her, it was criminal for someone with diabetes. This is so so sad and infuriating. Our elderly deserve SO much better than this!!! Especially with health conditions!
PRIS0N-MIKE@reddit
100% nursing home. No jail gives u a wrap of silverware. Or condiments lol.
When I was in jail we got a spork and a tiny cup and we had to "wash" them and re use them for our entire stay. I used to buy a ton of hot sauce and put It on everything because the shit either tasted like nothing or tasted horrible and that was one way to make it palatable.
donut-is-appalled@reddit
Jailhouse nursing home (nailed it!)
photo_bug_mama@reddit
It's on a plate, dead giveaway that it's a nursing home. Jail doesn't give plates because they can be weapons
HERMANNATOR85@reddit
Jail doesn’t have paper plates
Tranquiltangent@reddit
I've never been in a nursing home that didn't feel like hell on earth. Even the expensive, high-end ones. I wouldn't feed this to a raccoon, never mind a human. I'm sorry you and your mom have to deal with it.
CoconutxKitten@reddit
Really? High end one I volunteered at had beer, wine, & snack time
PetiteBonaparte@reddit
My grandma in law is in a nice one. Ive gone and had dinner with her. It was like olive garden quality which is leaps and bounds better than a lot of places. Im not sure how much it costs(probably a boat load) but she's happy there. Shes got her cats and can get her hair done once a week.
CoconutxKitten@reddit
One near me (in a low income area?) has a whole ass salon & gym & the food is apparently amazing
Shame it’s probably $$$$$$
PetiteBonaparte@reddit
Not all homes are bad. Its a shame they are so expensive. My other grandma in law begged to be put in a home. She wanted to be around people her own age. She wanted friends and activities. Her daughter had the money but refused because she was worried what people would think of her.
FlyingHogMonkeys@reddit
So sad, I hope that daughter took her out a bunch before passing. Poor thing just wanted to be happy again.
PetiteBonaparte@reddit
She sat in a chair in the living room for almost a decade. It was very sad.
kingamara@reddit
My grandma in law is also in a nice one.
Tranquiltangent@reddit
I should be more specific. I'm talking about memory care, the kinds of places that house older people with dementia and so forth. Think "lying in your own excrement all night because the staff can't or won't do anything to help you"-bad.
Unipiggy@reddit
You must be in the south
eugeneugene@reddit
My grandpas spending my whole damn inheritance on a $7000/month nursing home and he's eating like a king lol. They even have a little subway style sandwich bar that's open from 7am-7pm. Last night he had lobster.
dopamine_dream_@reddit
You mean his money?
I’d rather my parents spend all of their money to live out their days in comfort than live in misery so I can cash in a bit more.
eugeneugene@reddit
lol the sarcasm is lost in text but I don't expect any money. I'm just joking about him being in a bougie home
notabigmelvillecrowd@reddit
A lot of people do feel that way and are surprisingly un-shy about saying it, so I'm not surprised someone took it at face value. The stuff my mum's husband says about his mother is gross, but he kisses her ass in the hopes of a payout. He viscerally hates her because she wouldn't buy him two houses when he was younger. He begrudges her every penny spent and every day she lives, and then he goes over and mows her lawn to stay in her good books.
JessicaOkayyy@reddit
Your sarcasm wasn’t lost on me =) If it makes you feel any better. Sounds like he’s living it up in there!
eugeneugene@reddit
He is and I'm happy! He worked on cargo ships his whole life so I like that he gets to kick back and watch them float on by and he doesn't have to lift a finger lol
Same-Suggestion-1936@reddit
Those tots actually aren't that bad, they just always look like that
The bad food is when they try to give you "the good stuff" like one detox place they had an option for an open faced roast beef sandwich with gravy, it was literally just a slice of white bread and a Salisbury steak looking thing on top.
Always go for the simple stuff, eggs, potatoes, if the meat sounds fancy it will be frozen dinner quality so watch out for that, the pizza is somehow worse than Little Caesars too so avoid the pizza, there's better stuff on the menu, you get to know what actually should be on the menu versus some genius who's never been in that kitchen saying "hey wouldn't it be cool if we offered a vegan lasagna so they can have some good food?" No sir, first of all it wasn't even lasagna it was something else and it was the worst thing I've ever had in a hospital
Zealousideal_Box5339@reddit
My grandmothers was $10K a month. They had amazing meals and actives that I would want to live in one!
ClawGrave666@reddit
I can vouch for this. I’m currently the cook at a nursing home. And it’s pretty shite most the time lol I try but god dam gimme something to try with lmao
Xarius86@reddit
I've been the Culinary Director for assisted living. As unappetizing as it may appear, it's probably done this way so she doesn't choke and die based on doctors orders, and there isn't much you can do to make this particular dish look any more appetizing.
The hot dog was only steamed (rather than grilled or cooked in a oven) so it didn't develop a hard outer skin, and the tater tots were even mashed a bit to intentionally keep them from being hard/painful to chew.
Think about if you had teeth that hurt, or were missing significant teeth, and basically had to eat hard food by crushing it with your gums. A crispy tater tot would hurt, and you'd never be able to mash a crispy hot dog skin with your gums.
(My experience has been in fine dining, country clubs, from-scratch kitchens, and the assisted living places I've worked at have had luxury culinary programs.)
All of that said defending them - that is a low quality, non 100% beef hot dog, and it hardly makes sense to serve it with the bun when they are cut to that size.
It would have been more appropriate to finely dice them so they could still be eaten easily on the bun if she has the motor skills to do that. But, it sounds like she requires assistance to eat, so again, having the bun there without also being cut seems pointless.
There is an entire system in place to help those that are having problems with eating. https://www.iddsi.org/standards/framework
notabigmelvillecrowd@reddit
The presentation seems like way less of an issue than the fact that this has zero nutritional value. This is like hurry up and die food.
Xarius86@reddit
If they are in assisted living, there is an "always available menu" (at least everywhere I've worked) in case they don't like whatever is on the regular menu for that meal. This usually includes basics like hot dogs, hamburgers, deli sandwiches, PB&J, grilled chicken breast, salads, soups, cottage cheese, fruit, yogurt, etc.
There is a good possibility something was being served she didn't like or couldn't have.
There is also the possibility she will only eat hot dogs, regardless of what her family wants. I have had many residents over the years who will straight up refuse to eat anything except the exact same meal, every meal, for years. (And I'm not talking about residents with dementia, I'm talking about residents who are mentally 100% fine.)
Just because someone is in assisted living doesn't mean their autonomy gets taken away. They have a right to refuse to eat things they don't like. They have the right to eat the same thing every day if they want. We can only suggest they eat other things, we cannot force them.
You also can't truly judge what a resident is eating throughout the day based on a single meal or especially a single picture. Where I've worked, she would have already been offered an appetizer prior to this in the form of a soup, side salad, fresh fruit cup, or something like a cucumber/tomato salad. She'd also be offered a dessert afterwards, and in this woman's case, a specifically sugar free one.

limetraveler83@reddit
And mustard packets. And they definitely aren't giving you a roll of silverware.
NationalVisual8172@reddit
!!!mustard packets and condiments are usually commissary, exactly
arnber420@reddit
That is so messed up. Our tax dollars can pay for ICE but they can’t pay for inmates to have ketchup and mustard?
NationalVisual8172@reddit
My boyfriend was locked up for a month and a half after he accidently missed court for a misdemeanor driving without license during the hurricane the year prior. I spent $1000 dollars while he was in there ALONE on food, phone calls for him. It was horrible. I had to buy him paper, a pencil, everything possible. They dont give you anything in florida but a Bible.
FuckIPLaw@reddit
I bet the bible wasn't even from the prison, but a gift from the Gideons.
grrgrrtigergrr@reddit
In Chicago, we give them ketchup for their hot dogs.
(I of course am making that up, we’re not animals)
NationalVisual8172@reddit
I did talk and video chat him MULTIPLE times a day, all day and night because I have the money. But most inmates dont get any calls because they have no money. We used our credits when he got out and gave all his friends a 3 way call to use them up so they could call their loved ones. It was heartbreaking.
arnber420@reddit
Yeah, I’ve had a close family member in jail before and the costs were staggering. They felt bad for their other inmates too so they let them borrow their phone all the time, which cost us even more money. It sounds like literal hells
Soulbossanova9@reddit
And if you need assistance eating, how are you supposed to open the condiment packets? Much less squeeze them. Shoddy and unfortunate
ShortIrishGuy@reddit

Lordofdogmonsters@reddit
You don't sit at tables like that in jail. Plus you've got a mechanical chop on the hotdog. Nursing home for sure.
Racine262@reddit
They cut the hotdogs to prevent choking. They did a sloppy/bad job doing that.

Wow that’s terrible. I used to work in a not for profit nursing home run by the Lutheran church here in Canada and the food was SO GOOD. Like amazing good. The kitchen even made pizza once a month. It made the residents quality of life so much better and it kept me from starving in nursing school because staff got leftovers. Meanwhile at for profit facilities the food was crap. Not this bad though, I’d be complaining about this especially when your mom is diabetic. It’s sad how greedy certain facilities can be to the point they treat their patients like they aren’t even people. I’d like their management to explain this meal and if that’s something they find appetizing and would feed to someone they love. Elderly people already have problems with appetite, at least feed them food that’s edible. Sounds like they don’t put much money into staffing either.
