Chinese EV giant BYD faces ‘forced labor’ investigation at Hungary factory - The World from PRX

but all the technology subs told me BYD didn't benefit from extremely cheap labor and no regulations for workers, almost makes me think that maybe there might be some unethical business practices that help them out price everybody by such a ridiculous margin.

This article raises many alarm bells. First who is CLW? US based labor organization that specializes in the investigation of China?
Why is this raised by a US based labor organization run by a political refugee and no an EU Labor organization.
Very suspicious. Likely either Falun Gong or CIA behind this.

No animosity here mate. I just encourage you to, once in a while, think critically about where you are getting your information from.

Best I can tell it's not Falun Gong, though I can't really tell what it is. Looks like a pretty generic China-watch org. This profile of the founder just sort of says he's a political refugee by virtue of having been a labour-rights protester in China, I can find very little else.
I do see some of the usual sus Falun Gong / CIA tell-tales like a prominently-located Manhattan-based HQ which has me hesitating a bit. My guess — real org with FG/CIA supporters but a genuine mission. The Hungary report hasn't actually been published so there's nothing to review first-hand yet, but here's a similar report from them. Honestly not sure what to make of it.

What? It’s common knowledge that in China they practice the 9/9/6: from 9 to 9 6 days a week
Mountain-Rope2782@reddit
It's not common knowledge for certain types on reddit where they praise anything non-American, but especially China, when they have never even stepped foot in China even just for vacation, and have now clue how anything in China works.
Or they actually have heard about it but refuse to believe it due to their own biased world views.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
Their car making is really more automation than legacy automakers, there are some videos from some guys proven.
Anyway, it still never means they not slaving labors.
bippos@reddit
Oh no the big Chinese company is no different than any other big chinese company? What a shocker
daandriod@reddit
It kinda is tbh. The reddit hivemind had elected BYD as the "can do no wrong second coming of Jesus" company. Reddit gives them the same guack they were doing Elon and Tesla a decade ago.
Even just questioning this company would get you hate. I'm not making a call yet but I will await the investigation
bippos@reddit
lol I know they hate me over at the electric vehicle sub, it’s worse this time though because people are praising every Chinese EV company. This sub glaze Chinese cars too while hating any tech in western cars
drunkandslurred@reddit
100% percent it's a Chinese propaganda sub. Chinese brands are all perfect and no criticism allowed. Any non Chinese brand is just a desperate attempt to play catch up and sucks compared to the #1 Chinese cars.
adotang@reddit
Just reminding you now that some time in the past few years Reddit's userbase pretty much tripled with no apparent explanation (this was post-COVID). Now, that may have coincided with LLMs and a ramp-up of foreign influence operations, but who's to say, really?

I love seeing all the people in Chinese EV comments trying to pretend that Chinese EV companies are just so much smarter and advanced than the others.
Theyre definitely not taking shortcuts ANYWHERE else

Who would have thought that their labor practices of cutting corners and basically using slaves extends to most of their industries.

So, cheap labor, heavy subsidies, devalued currency, lower price, good enough product.
And people actually believe anyone have a chance to compete without heavy tariffs?

>Chinese migrant laborers hired to construct the factory, according to the organization, have consistently faced excessive hours, seven-day work weeks, withheld wages and fear of retaliation.
>According to CLW, the factory has brought roughly 4,000 jobs to Szeged, but many of them haven’t gone to Hungarian residents; Chinese migrant laborers, rather, have been flown in from rural parts of the country on temporary visas to construct the plant at a fraction of the cost of Hungary’s minimum wage.
>Hungarian officials have celebrated news of the plant. In a statement issued shortly after BYD’s announcement that it had chosen Szeged as the site for its new facility, the country’s foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, said the factory “will be one of the largest investments in Hungarian economic history” and provide thousands of jobs in the region.
Europeans are committing suicide
Thoseguys_Nick@reddit
By still allowing Hungary to be in the EU without consequences? Yes I agree. Orban isn't anything we should associate with but sadly there weren't any precautions built into the EU for when a country elects a anti-democratic dictator.

No, by allowing the Trojan horse in with open arms
Thoseguys_Nick@reddit
Hungary loves Russia too, do you think that reflects all of Europe?
Aranka_Szeretlek@reddit
That has relatively little to do with Chinese forced labour
Thoseguys_Nick@reddit
Perhaps, but something happening in Hungary isn't cause to say something overly dramatic like "europeans are committing suicide".
Aranka_Szeretlek@reddit
I think the commenter was referring to the perceived ucompetitiveness of European labour, which is a common talking point for the likes such as CDU.

not a big surprise, from my office i can see the factory and the pace theyre building it is incredible.

I thought that was the only case in their Brazilian factory… All right, I’m going to get attacked again.
Specially, the company has gotten business loses and layoffs 100k employees, they’re clearly in bad time. Their fans don’t want to hear these bad news.

The EV sub people are about to come in and tell you it’s a sacrifice in the name of progress

Just to be clear. The EV sub is overrun by Chinese bots/shills. And yes one of them is already defending BYD in here.
