Appreciation Post : Thank you Romania for Laura Kövesi, the European Chief Prosecutor. Is she highly respected and feared in Romania as she is in Greece?
Posted by anon58588@reddit | AskBalkans | View on Reddit | 244 comments
Context :
The European Public Prosecutor’s Office is currently pursuing three major fraud cases in Greece
Europe’s first Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi is visiting Greece on Tuesday amid ongoing probes into EU funds fraud and mounting tensions with the country’s conservative government.
Strained relations with government
Kövesi’s visit also brings her strained relationship with Athens to light. Last year, she accused the government of obstructing the rail crash probe and criticised the Greek Constitution for shielding ministers from prosecution.
Under current rules, ministers’ immunity laws – backed by New Democracy’s parliamentary majority – have prevented any prosecutions in EU funds-related cases.
Kövesi even wrote to the European Commission urging a revision of constitutional provisions that protect ministers from accountability, drawing sharp pushback in Athens.

All the corrupt politicians aka 90% of all politicians fear hear return.
No_Individual947@reddit
She's very good looking
therealoptimoose@reddit
Romanian politicians had to promote her to get rid of her, so yes. She’s been the only one not mimicking the fight against corruption.
exmachinaadastra@reddit
Much love from Romania!
Smooth-Inspector-391@reddit
On behalf of a big proportion Greeks, I also want to thank her for her services in attempting to expose the corruption in our country, even despite our government's unwillingness to do it (because several MPs of her own are involved).
She didn't get intimated despite the insults that she received from several government officials and thanks to her reports, several MPs and ministers have already resigned.
I doubt that we will see any justice served, but its always refreshing to see someone from exterior unfolding all this rotten situation
InCloud44@reddit
Yes, she IS. And we romanians, hope that she will be the next PRESIDENT!!!
Otherwise-Badger1061@reddit
She has Hungarian last name. I don't know if she is ethnic Hungarian but aur would go nuts if someone with a Hungarian last name win presidency. I dont think that Romanians would vote someone in power with Hungarian last name. If you do you are much better than us. It doubt it woukd work vica-versa.
Polite_user@reddit
But they voted twice for someone called Iohannis
redxx14@reddit
She's ethnic Romanian from Covasna, her birth last name is Lascu. Her ex-husband is ethnic Hungarian and kept his last name after divorce.
Bright-Magician7863@reddit
she kept her ex husbands family name
enzo_1st@reddit
the president does not do what you think. what you're looking for is Băsescu.
ThanosZach@reddit
Hell, if she manages to clean even a little bit of the dirt that Greece is into right now, I am willing to vote for her as PM of Greece.
CyberHacker0x042@reddit
Guys, nobody thinks this, this guy is biased.
Most people dont even recognise her , and if they know her, they know her as a prosecutor that worked for the anti corruption department.
Some peope have a negative opinion on her because she ALLEGEDLY did some shady stuff with the secret services. ( I"m not informed on this subject, this talking point was pushed by televisions owned by oligarch and politicians).
Nobody wants her as president , just some minority from the progressive people , they get only like 8% in election polls.
IPutTheArtNFart@reddit
The alleged shady stuff is obviously coreupt politician fighting back with skewed lies trying to kill her image.
porculdeguinea@reddit
Lol, nobody knows her in Romania? The only reason to not want her as a president is that by constitution our president does not have that much power and she is action oriented. She will do good regardless where she wants to continue her career.
ArteMyssy@reddit
Thank for displaying the official POV of the Romanian Mafia.
Striking_Shock_6463@reddit
All the balkans know her, silly! Greetings from Greece where we regard her as the messiah. Please, Laura save us!
Scuipici@reddit
why? the president in romania doesn't hold that much power. We should focus on parliamentary elections way more than presidential.
green_panda_5345@reddit
Right. I'd like a president willing to put her in charge of the corruption agency instead. Right now we have a fucking tool.
cetrebe@reddit
no no, the romanian government is so putrid it needs to be completely destroyed and rebuilt before she gets in
or she will get eaten alive from inside
Glum-Original-120@reddit

Feared? Nah man. I'll leave her with my imaginary kids any day.
Stavvy_@reddit
Here in Hungary we are looking forward to Ms Kövesi vs Orbán at some point. Please make it happen!
EZES21@reddit
What? In boxing? She's pretty tall and sturdy. I think she played basketball in her youth. She could body slam Orban.
enzo_1st@reddit
if they would go basketball he would be the ball. he's round shaped
Stavvy_@reddit
I would pay good money to see that :))
KouThan@reddit
Or you could make it so that Orban is no longer president, I know it’s stacked but it would be nice, and then she comes to help with the cleanup. Hopefully.
Stavvy_@reddit
We are actively working on it!
CataVlad21@reddit
Unfortunately not. People fell for the psd propaganda back in 2015-2018 or whatever it was, after she did a massive corruption hunting spree starting 2012-2013 or so, opening high profile investigations daily, that those mf crooks were crying in the parliament begging for their colleagues to grant them parliamentary immunity against prosecution!
Things slowed down in 2015 or so cause she was scened all sort of garbage and was more focused on her personal battles to prove everything they threw at her was fake and unfortunately in 2018 the psd government forced president Iohannis to revoke his support for her and sign her dismissal. Maybe if the brain rot nation didnt vote for the crooks back in power in 2016 we'd have had another course of action, but they gave them all the power they needed to stop her.
Man, it was the most hope i felt in my entire 40y for a semnificant change for the better! We were opening the tv in the mornings at one point and saw a new well known crook starting being investigated for something, out of the many he did, at least for something they could find on him, and then by the end of the day they would announce another one from some other part of the country. You could feel the duspair in psd/pnl at the time as all of them knew they were at risk and might end up investigated! And the hope in everyone's hearts that was honest! And it didnt last long... They put all their election influencing machine to work and got full power in 2016 and took them 2 years of fake allegations about her to save their asses...
Im glad shes doing a wonderful job for the EU, but we'd surely still need her back here. She had the biggest balls, basketball size balls, any prosecutor ever had in this damn country!
Careless-Situation68@reddit
some respect her in Romania. Most hate her because they are uneducated.
FlanInternational100@reddit
I'm curious, what are their reasons to hate her? Are they generally pro-government so she irritates them or?
SoulEkko@reddit
Long story short: she pissed off some of the people in power by jailing them/their relatives/their party members etc., so they wanted her removed ASAP so that they could continue doing business with the State (read: corruption) without Laura breathing down their neck.
This obviously led to some propaganda campaigns to tarnish her name (nothing new in Romania, it happens even now), and of course we have our share of people with lower IQ than bricks that fall for said propaganda.
floare_salbatica@reddit
Similar with Dana Buzoianu now. That woman is a force of nature.
Ka_Trewq@reddit
How would Romania look after 10 years of LCK presidency with DB prime-minister?
CataVlad21@reddit
None of them should hold either of those positions. She should get back to hunting down corruption under some parlamentary majority that supports it/her. Will never happen, people are too brain dead to vote USR or even USR+PNL with a confortable majority. Also, current PM, Ilie Bolojan, is the best man we could wish for for the job. No reason to look for someone else now. Just for a majority that would let him do the damn reforms and hopefully live long enough to even get us out of this shit and start building stuff all over the place, as he did in his city of Oradea and then the whole county of Bihor. Unlikely to happen, they have an agreement to rotate the PNL government with a psd one half way, so in 2027. Obviously the more capable PNL one, the only guy with the balls to stand up for the challenge, took the job in 2025 on the edge if bankrupcy, while the others will take it back in 2027 with another incompetent c***.
We could use a better president than Nicusor Dan. He's definitely underwhelming so far, but it could have been catastrophically worse. And Mrs Buzoianu is definitely a wonderful politician, as they all SHOULD BE, and i can only hope she can do enough changes in her current position before the swap they do next year that will be hard to undo by the corrupt fucks from psd who will form the next government. But she could indeed fit many other key positions, maybe even a PM one, but luckily for us we have the right man for the job now.
Thing is, we probably always had enough good politicians to make a noticeable change for the better, it's just they couldnt gain enough traction or credibility because voting was always influenced by the former commies (psd). Rural was heavily controlled by them, low educated urban and administration was also heavily controlled by them with social funds and fear they would lose their current jobs if they dont help psd win, so you had mostly private sector and mostly highly educated people plus most of diaspora voting for a united right. And it was most times very close. Now this ultrasuveranist current hit us as well and we needed the entire "democratic" side of the spectrum to stay "credibile" for the rest of the world. They were forced to put their best men in charge of government positions to get us out of a big shit hole the former psd PM dragged us into with huge debts, we basically lived on debt for years, loan after loan after loan for even paying salaries and pensions, and the new government has to take drastic measures to get us back to shore... Therefore it's hard to believe the suveranists wont score even more next elections and all the good, highly capable people we talked in the begining will still be anywhere close to power. They might not even be in the next government, starting 2027, formed by psd. So we cant even enjoy their expertise and good intentions now, cause they have to take crisis measures, let alone ever seeing them working on building something sustainable... Thats where you end up when every negative iq xxxx has a right to vote and one of them, or more, end up running a government! Hard chain to break!
Monoctis@reddit
Without a party majority in parliament, not much.
domets@reddit
ok, but how are they tarnishing her name? what are the arguments?
Realistic-Ad-4372@reddit
Years of fakenews. And by years I mean since president Băsescu endorsed her, that was like 16 years now.
EdgyNationMemes@reddit
What are they saying about her?
Realistic-Ad-4372@reddit
I left a comment below.
Tldr: when she was leading the anticorruption campaign here in Romania, she had some help front the secret services (monitored phone calls, access to private text messages maybe other espionage capabilities). Thing that is not so democratic but it did the job and it was also endorsed by the president, the rulling party and of course the people.
ArteMyssy@reddit
"Because an Anti-corruption Authority should have no access whatsoever to sources proving corruption. Secret services are not there to help justice with information about corruption, they should abstain from these dangerous interferences."
Realistic-Ad-4372@reddit
You said that more or less already in another comment.
ArteMyssy@reddit
i think having repeated this about 4-5 times in this thread
every time mafiosi are complaining about secret services providing to the justice information on corruption, i ll be present with this Mafia - POV
Realistic-Ad-4372@reddit
Don't you think is counterproductive and spam like behavior? I mean you did this 3 times only under this comments thread...
ArteMyssy@reddit
This is absolutely not a simple repetition; each time it is a perfectly tailored response to the comment to which it relates.
Each time the Romanian Mafia will invoke the collaboration between the anti-graft prosecution and the secret services, i will provide the official position of the Romanian Mafia about devoiding the Anti Graft Directorate of any relevant means to fight corruption.
AnyChampionship2512@reddit
The mass media is just a propaganda machine for the big political partys. So the media has been portraying her tenure in the Anti-Corruption Police, like some sort of authoritarian regime that terrorized politicians. Basically, thieves are calling the police evil for holding them responsible for their actions. People know that politicians are corrupt, but when they get bombarded with that propaganda all the time, they start to parrot it even though they don't believe it. It doesn't help that she is a woman, which makes her an easy target due to the typical East European sexism, combined with the fact that she is professional and decent, and doesn't scream, insult and make a circus.
Careless-Situation68@reddit
its brainwashing by media payed by corrupt politicians.
Ok-Brief4250@reddit
She started an anti-corruption campaign, surely those she caught were corrupt but she caught only the ones that she was told to catch.
DanTheApothecary@reddit
Okay 3yo account with 200 karma. Definitely not a bot. 😅
Both-Budget-2734@reddit
She has been systematicaly lynched by most media outlets paid bt corrupt parties during her local tenure.
Their accusation? That she makes a "cufflinks show" with corrupt politicians and thus humiliates them... unfortunately a lot of brainwashed people believed that stupid narative.
Romania was super lucky to have her as general prosecutor, she moved the country from entirely corrupt to mildly corrupt.
FlanInternational100@reddit
I'm curious, what are their reasons to hate her? Are they generally pro-government so she irritates them or?

IPutTheArtNFart@reddit
Romanian media went after her reputation. The corrupt politicians pushed to open a fake investigation of her on basis of coruption trying to kill her image. Politicians would bitch and moan that they were afraid to do their jobs because they were scared they'd then have to go to jail.
So yeah, she is who it seems she is.
lunaskarp@reddit
Yes she is in Greece both highly respected and feared.
apoprosanatolismos@reddit

I once had her walk by me on the street and I timidly said "good day". She nodded. It's like I was blessed by a goddess.
Sadly she said from the start she is not interested in politics so don't hold your breaths on that.
AlexAxStefan@reddit
She may seem like a very good prosecutor — if you still believe in fairy tales and heroes. In reality, she hasn’t accomplished much in Romania. Ask yourself what she actually investigated in the Pfizer case, and who was held accountable for the lack of transparency and the allegedly manipulated contracts linked to Ursula von der Leyen.🤫

I believe educated Romanians respect her and would wish for her to come back as much as they wish to continue her fight in EU. The other part see her as a negative figure due to aggressive lobby against her and they’ve been manipulated to believe lies of her work. Sadly a common tactic in our country that still manages to brainwash people.

well known imposter, she plagiarized stupidly in her PhD thesis. of course, he received a pass from a commission of Romanian professors, on grounds that she plagiarized `only` 4% of the text. on the other hand, her policy as a Chief Prosecutor was riddled with accusations of unlawful collaboration with intelligence agencies and partisanship

DryDatabase169@reddit
The truth is: ND like all politicians are pieces of shit but they are the only somewhat capable of ruling Greece. Im a Belgian living in Greece. The moment PASOK is elected the streets will be dirty again, foreign investment stops and its back to 2018. Yes you Greek champagne socialists can down vote me but it's the truth. Every educated Greek I met never complained strongly about ND. On social media and Reddit they make them look like its the worst of the worst but in reality they are the best of the worst with a plan for the future. Greece has being doing better outside external factors but the moment ND loses power this country collapses again like during Syriza. Yes I know the recent history. In my opinion, you want real politik to save what is left of Greece.
insitnctz@reddit
No bro. ND is similar to maga. Nothing good has come from them the last years with mytsotakis as a president. They are crooks, with many scandals on their history going years back. The only thing koulis is better than trump is external politics which is not a big achievement anyways. He is a traitor, a thief and a conman along with his cronies like marinakis, georgiadis etc. Who is gonna pay the billions that they stole from opekepe? We will, and that's just a small example. Not to mention all the scandals the banks have been involved recently that have influenced the housing problem and the big rents that are unattainable for most people, that koulis and his cronies are also involved in. Or let's mention how spied his political rivals and other businessmen. The people that he killed in the tempi and took 0 accountability? The fact that the average Greek gets poorer and inflation gets bigger and has his usless mate georgiadis publicly laughter at it?
And I highly doubt that you talked with any educated people that support ND. You probably talked with bootlickers or people that have benefitted from the corruption or other stick up artists or crypto bros. Cause ain't no way a person with a slither of education can support that criminal.
metalboogaloo@reddit
Ah yes, SYRIZA, the one party that didn't mismanage and steal public funds and was in government for 4,5 years was what caused the financial turmoil. The country was doing incredibly well under Samaras and Venizelos with 27% unemployment and 200,000 shutting down in the span of 4-5 years. Of course the future belongs to them. They just owe €500m in loans as a party, have numerous scandals even after 2019 related to billions of euros from EU and government funds (OPEKEPE), spy on political opponents, businessesmen and even their own ministers and have a huge propaganda network all across social media with fronts acting as legitimate news sites (Omada Alithias, Manifesto, Ellada 24). Speaking of which, why don't you show us your post and comment history? Don't be shy.

5cozi@reddit
Maybe people from like Focsani which is not that far from Bucharest, but I doubt u will find fcsb supporters in a city like Timisoara, Craiova etc. Kavala is 150 km away from Salonic it will make more sense for them to support a team like Aris or Paok
Vaisiamarrr@reddit
Timisoara and Craiova have a long standing footballing tradition but I assure you there are Dinamo supporters in Dej for example or in Iasi, I know becaue I go to the stadium pretty regularly and they have their own fanclubs and even come to home games in Bucharest

Greece is so hypercentralized most people support clubs in Athens or Thessaloniki, even if they live nowhere close to these cities. If it wasn't so sad and reflective of our country's sore situation it would be very comical. Local clubs sadly see little support and this creates a cycle where Athenian and Thessalonikian clubs, owned by "legitimate businessmen", dominate the Superleague forever, to the detriment of the rest of the country's football.
frn8@reddit
The saddest part is that this phenomenon boomed in the last 20 years. Local teams died along with the crisis, when the hypercentralization started. I see videos from small teams up until 2005 and the stadiums were more than full
Keanu990321@reddit
Local teams were already long dead by the time of the crisis.

I wouldn't say so, I am from Thessaly and even the smallest village had its own active football team and attendance was always full and lively up until 2010. Today nobody cares about amateur leagues
Unable-Pie-8158@reddit
She is very respected in Serbia, we need her here....
Candidatu@reddit
She is actually very controversial public figure in Romania, but reddit (for Romanians is a mainly progressive crowd) is a huge fan of the lady.
The reality about her is that she has been appointed by the President at around 33 years old as General Prosecutor of Romania without being a proeminent investigator. She was working as a anti-mafia prosecutor in a medium sized city in Transylvania which is known for being quiet and peaceful. But her father was one of the oldest and most important public prosecutors in the same region, so that is why she was selected.
Afterwards she signed a protocol with the secret service (that the public found out later and was ruled to be illegal by the Constitutional Court) in order to put actually all the businessmen and politicians under surveillance of the secret service. In this period the number of people under surveillance indicated as "dangerous to state security" increased exponentially, she being the one that officially asked the supreme court judges to approve that. Other than that, she had no investigative powers so she practically did nothing.
When her mandate expired she was nominated by the same president as the Chief Prosecutor in the Anti-corruption National Direction. She then used all the intel gathered illegaly by the secret service to put a young and inexperienced set of prosecutors she recruited to prosecute hundreds of political opponents of the president's party, then, when the power shifted, she switched sides. In the following years the rate of acquittals obtained by DNA prosecutors were 10 times higher than the average of the rest of the Public Prosecution Office.
For me she never proved to be a respectable investigative prosecutor, and nothing else but a very good organizer playing dirty, sometimes illegal (which is why she was feared) and benefiting from a very good PR in the press.
ArteMyssy@reddit
"Because an Anti-corruption Authority should have no access whatsoever to sources proving corruption. Secret services are not there to help justice with information about corruption, they should abstain from these dangerous interferences."
Anyway, thank you for taking your time to present the official POV of the Romanian Mafia.
Candidatu@reddit
In terms of secret service involvement, providing Information is one thing, providing proofs to be used in trial cases is different. If this is Romanian Mafia's point of view it means they know the law and rules of democracy better than you
ArteMyssy@reddit
Exactly.
"Because an Anti-corruption Authority should have no access whatsoever to sources proving corruption. Secret services are not there to help justice with information about corruption, they should abstain from these dangerous interferences."
Candidatu@reddit
Perfect then. Look up ANY other established democracies in which Secret service is involved in ordinary cases other than national security matters, and you might understand something.
On second thought, maybe you won't so don't bother anymore
ArteMyssy@reddit
You hit the nail on the head.
The Romanian Mafia has a vital interest in definig graft as an ordinary criminal case, precisely in order to ruleou any involvent of special services and means.
Except, in Romania, corruption pertains to the National Security, is matter of special services, by law as ruled by the CSAT.
Bad luck to you!
Candidatu@reddit
In which contries exactly does this happen explicitly?
ArteMyssy@reddit
I should do a research about the role of the secret services, who does phone listening, digital seraching, etc. It s quite a vast field of research. I am not willing to do this, only to feed a mafia-troll.
Fact is, corruption in the civilized world is far from being irrelevant, on the contrary, it is quite present, but only in higher white collar circles.
Nevertheless, law enforcement and justice cope satisfactorily with corruption.
In Romania corruption is devastating, so there is need for special means to special conditions.
The romanian predatory circles invoke the example of western democracies every time it fits their interests.
I think, it s enough of mafia-trolling today.

There was a time when this lady was chief prosecutor here in Romania and back then the counte- corruption had a not so democratic collaboration with the secret services.
Which was indeed kind of true but to be honest it was more of a gray area than dictatorship stuff. Back then, there were breaking news each afternoon with a new corrupt politician as backimage.
Of course this was the fuel for a fakenews campaign and denigration against her. But this tools were granted to her when she started on that position and endorsed by the president (and his party) at that time. She found corruption in that party too btw.

No, the issue was that there was no third party involved in issuing warrants. They're were tapping phones and bugging offices (if these are the right terms) on hunches. Which were most of the times true 😂😂

She was a monster (in the good way) in Romania. The politicians and the media they control still speak of her time, as if it was the regime of Stalin. The entire system was afraid of her. Now, ever since she left, corruption is out of control, justice became a political tool, and the politicians are looting us while laughing in our faces.
As to what Koversi is up too. Honestly, I don't know much. They hated her so much, that they aren't even mentioning her name or work in the media, outside of the past.
GreatWolf_NC@reddit
Just out of curiosity, is she of hungarian descent?
Has nothing to do with anything, just curious about that, I haven't been following EU politics for a while now and even though we're neighbors I barely know anything about romanian politics.
ArteMyssy@reddit
No, her birth name is Laura Codruta Lascu, very typical Romanian Transylvanian name.
Kövesi is her husbands name, which she gratiously kept after divorce
chillbill1@reddit
She is feared and respected. However, she also has her skeletons especially regarding the involvement of the secret services in her job as an anti corruption prosecutor.
ArteMyssy@reddit
"Because an Anti-corruption Authority should have no access whatsoever to sources proving corruption. Secret services are not there to help justice with information about corruption, they should abstain from these dangerous interferences."

ArteMyssy@reddit
Thiefs and crock definitely don't.
tractir13@reddit
She was feared indeed. Let's just say before her there were no indicted corrupt politicians, and neither after she left.
Just in 2015 alone her Directorate indicted over 1,250 defendants for high and medium level corruption crimes, including 1 Prime Minister, 5 ministers, 16 Deputies, 5 Senators and a Mayor.
Because of that, she was the target of a huge media attacks, and not all were baseless, many voices accused her of over-using the intelligence services & surveillance and also using the Judicial system as a political weapon (targeting specific elites and above this high profile suspects were brought before cameras handcuffed, with press leaks from the prosecution, things like photographs, private conversations which created a trial-by-media pressure, they were "guilty" before the court ruling started)

BluejayOk6705@reddit
People with common sense do respect and support her a lot, because she was not afraid to piss off the wrong people. She put together many corruption cases with solid evidence, which is why the ruling parties tried to tarnish her name, by accusing her of being corrupted, without any evidence of course. They just paid off the media to say whatever they needed to. Romania has many uneducated people, who cannot even speak or write correctly in their mother tongue, which believe everything they see on the most shitty tv programs and what they see scrolling on tiktok. That's how they tarnished her name, with lies and accusations with no evidence. I personally would love it if she came back as the head of DNA. She wasn't allowed to clean up properly and since she left, the institution was led by other corrupt prosecutors, who would tip off the right people about any ongoing investigation.

jugozomboid@reddit
She tries to do work in Croatia but it doesn’t mean much when everyone and everything works against her, she can only do so much without going against constitutional law
Fred_Neecheh@reddit
Example to be followed
I dont expect her personally to fix the Serbian state. Thats up to us. Most she can do is pursue that investigation into misuse of EU funds
slavujkaaa@reddit
I look forward to the day she pursues that investigation and something actually comes out of it. So far we've had only anti-regime sensationalist headlines and social media shares about Covesi in Serbia, but no tangible benefit IMHO. So, it's hype based on nothing, so far...
Fred_Neecheh@reddit
I dont expect anything groundbreaking from that inveatigation. She is limited to investigating rhe uses of EU money, and I dont think any of it was spent on the railway station, as opposed to the rail itself. But even then I dont think there was much of it.
I see her as an example to be followed with respect to what she did in her home country. In the end, it will be us who ll have to fix Serbia, not the Europeans, Kovesi, Chinese, Indians, Martians...

bravejohn1@reddit
In Romania the most watched televisions are controlled by the most corrupt (and bragging about it) people imaginable. So, they tried to tarnish her image as much as they could but nothing sticked outside conspiracy land folks.
But yes, she was super effective in her role, the politicians were literally desperate to get rid out her. After she was ousted by them and due to nicely timed legislative changes there was a sudden drop in high-profile prosecutions, particularly shocking among magistrates (were the number dropped to 0).

I can't speak to the job she did in other countries, but in Romania, well, her history is one of glamorous arrests, dawn raids and perp walks - which eventually resulted in extremely little in terms of convictions and actual results.
In short, she was the perfect political killer. Someone needed to be out of circulation? Inevitably, the DNA (National anticorruption department) would find something to make a dossier out of. Crash, boom, bang, great arrests and then, the dossier would exist, but would be technically flawed on purpose, so the person would inevitably get off, sooner or later.
Her promotion to the European PPO was essentially an escape for her, governments come and go and her person was tied to the person and patronage of the former president, Traian Băsescu. After Klaus Iohannis got elected as president, she became a liability, since she managed to take out of circulation so many of his associates, go figure. So, for her, staying in Romania was out of the question, but as luck would have it, the PPO needed a bloodhound - and she is perfect for the role.
HornyJutsu40K@reddit

Hats off. She has been a ray of hope in Bulgaria (albeit via the EPPO) for a long time. I think we're finally stepping on our democratic feet now, but she pursued and continues to pursue some of the most major cases involving the mafia and their political puppets.
Hot_Distribution_131@reddit
I haven't heard of her, but I also don't watch the news often. What has she done in Bulgaria?
floare_salbatica@reddit
Here's a pretty well done documentary, in case you wanna learn more.
Strict_West_911@reddit
Well of course her jurisdiction is limited to crimes concerning European funds, and also heavily dependent (limited) on the functioning of the Bulgarian Ministry of Internal Affairs (which btw is finally operating well).
But among others, the Chiren Gas Storage case would be the most notable, which consequently led to the recent uncovering of affairs between Teodora Georgieva (Bulgarian Europrosecutor), Petar Petrov- Evroto and Emilia Rusinova (Chief of Sofia Prosecution), and then there are other major cases like the fake Varna port and I think a bunch of other infrastructure and sustainbility-related projects that utilized EU funds on paper, but in reality were funneled to oligarchs.
I just checked and, per latest status, the EPPO apparently has over 250 running lawsuits for fraud totalling nearly 2bn EUR in Bulgaria.
methodinmadness7@reddit

She has been investigating corruption in Croatia for years. She had a huge army of investigators and managed to catch marginal characters. Not because there is no corruption here, but because Greeks and Romanians are amateurs when it comes to hiding traces of corruption, unlike Croats. She leaves disappointed because she didn't arrest anyone important in Croatia.
Natopor@reddit
We are amateurs becausr our standards are low. Something that could be seen as an absolute no in Croatia would be seen as meh in Romania. Hence croatian politicians need to be a bit more carefull.
jajebivjetar@reddit

I'm gonna be honest, Kovesi is someone who I haven't tought in a long time. Mainly due to me being rather young when she was attacked by the crooks in Romania.
I can say that after she left, the media about her stopped almost instantly. It took them 0 sec to fix the "damage" she did
As for how popular she is, here in reddit she is rater well liked. Sadly, I fear the average romanian still dislikes her due to old PSD propaganda.
