My uncle Mike, my cousin Petey, my godfather Mike, my uncle Frank, my uncle Paulie, my other cousin Petey, and my wife Maria are all on their way to buy one right now. This is a game changer for us! My husband is prior service and before he bought me my every day carry handgun (constitutional carry state) he hammered into me:
Treat every gun as if they're loaded
Never point them at anyone unless you intend to shoot
Keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot
I always clear my gun before handing it to anyone & drop the magazine because that's what I was taught, even though it's empty. My gun has 2 safeties, one on the grip and a standard, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Decent choice of a first time gun purchase. Bad choice on finger placement. I would suggest you go and get some range lessons. Learn the principles of gun ownership and handling.
Have someone teach you to clean it, and from there just have some clean honest to goodness fun. Once you get comfortable with it, then learn to carry it. We don’t need you shooting your 🍆 off on the 2nd day.
Get a good holster for it. That looks like a TLR6 or a copy of one, so there are plenty of options out there.

There is absolutely zero reason to touch the trigger, until your target is acquired and you are ready to fire. Until that moment, keep your finger OUT of the trigger guard. This will preserve your life, along with the lives of those around you... because you are responsible for every single bullet that leaves that gun. And once a bullet is set in motion, there is no taking it back.

DanBrino@reddit
Great, now take a gun safety class before you load your first mag. That finger on the trigger is a big no-no unless this image was taken after you had identified a clear target you were willing to destroy, and it's surroundings, you had your sight-picture aligned, and you were ready to fire.
Trigger finger discipline is crucial, because accident or not, you are responsible for the results and ramifications every single time that thing goes off.
Cross-Eyed-Pirate@reddit
Get your booger hook off the bang switch.
Welcome to America!
Lost_Drunken_Sailor@reddit

tgracchus19@reddit
1) handgun safety, dude. There are rules to keep you from hurting yourself and others.
2) fkin congratulations! Welcome to the land of the free. I hope you understand the responsibility that comes with owning your own safety and those around you
3) honestly... to each their own, but take that bitty little guy to the range and train. Consider purchasing something a little larger amd a little more comfortable to shoot! That one's gonna br uncomfortable in the long term!
4) Don't stop with the gateway drug. As much of a responsibility as gun ownership is, it's also a phenomenal hobby and a great way to meet people. Don't buy your first and decide it's enough! Keep training, keep meeting people, and don't be afraid to engage with a really awesome community!
Radvous@reddit

ZucchiniSad790@reddit
one_who_reads@reddit
1- treat every firearm as if it is loaded 2- keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you are ready to fire 3- do not point a gun at anything you are unwilling to destroy 4- be aware of your target, what is around and behind your target, and the ballistic implications thereof.
You typically have to break multiple of these rules for things to go catastrophically wrong.

treat every gun as loaded (and always, yes, always, check the magazine and chamber for for the cartridge),
finger off the trigger (unless just prior to the actual shooting of a gun),
always point the gun to "safe direction" (the direction where there would be least or no damage in case of accidental discharge).

nukey18mon@reddit
This is clearly a parody of an April fools post made yesterday. An image of a finger on a trigger doesn’t indicate unsafe firearm handling.
22dinoman@reddit
Bro, literally the first thing you learn when receiving firearm training is to not ever pur your finger on the trigger if you don't intend to shoot, accidents happen and one wrong squeeze could end up with someone or something getting shot, it absolutely is does indicate unsafe firearms handling and if you think otherwise you shouldn't be here
nukey18mon@reddit
Never dry fire again
22dinoman@reddit
If you're dry firing you're still intending to pull the trigger so I don't get your point
nukey18mon@reddit
Are you intending to shoot and put a hole in your wall?
HemHaw@reddit
Yeah it kinda does though.
Keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot
Habits like this photo op are how negligent discharges happen.
ammonthenephite@reddit
He was clearly ready to shoot....the picutre.
scoubt@reddit
What if he was ready to shoot?
TundraSR5@reddit
His ceiling was attacking him
PrincessRut0@reddit
Exactly, you’re not practicing trigger discipline because you don’t know the difference between a loaded and unloaded firearm, OBVIOUSLY. You’re doing it to build habit and reflex so that you never find yourself in a ND situation just because your dumbass had to take a bunch of irresponsible photos and videos that no one even cares about.
HemHaw@reddit
Thank you.
A photo op is not disassembling a glock nor is it dry fire practice.
Even then you are making sure that the other rules are followed (being sure of what you're pointing at and what is beyond it and not pointing at anything you aren't willing to destroy).
nukey18mon@reddit
The list I gave isn’t meant to be comprehensive. The point is to show that you can safely violate that rule of firearm safety. If safe firearm handling is practiced (ex verifying clear, safe direction) it doesn’t matter what you do with your finger on the trigger, whether it’s dry fire or a photo.
Superb_Extension1751@reddit
Imagine being scared to ensure your gun is clear and safe and then dry fire in your own home.
PrincessRut0@reddit
He’s not dry firing though and going through proper motions for a purpose, is he? He’s taking a dumb photo with his finger on the trigger that no one cares to see.

nukey18mon@reddit
How do you know? Didn’t know taking pictures somehow makes something unsafe
nukey18mon@reddit
Have you ever dry fired? Have you ever disassembled a Glock? You just broke your own rule. The rules of safe firearm handling are not God’s 10 commandments, there are plenty instances where it is safe to break a rule.

Nyancide@reddit
why do people say keep your finger off the trigger in the most jokingly way possible?
quandjereveauxloups@reddit
If you yell at someone, they tend to notice the yelling more than the message.
Saying something in a funny/joking way is more likely to stick in someone's head. Turns it into something they can laugh about while being safe.
As an example, I would forget to turn the oven off about half the time I cooked anything. Saw a recipe video where the person called the oven an onion, thought it was funny, and started calling it that myself. I almost never forget to turn it off because "turn off the onion" pops into my head.
Nyancide@reddit
fair enough!
gconsier@reddit

No-Mechanic3931@reddit
We try to not fully embarrass while teaching the lesson. A little fun and a little embarrassment tends to teach it faster.
gconsier@reddit
Blah yeah it’s all fun and games till you mod a small motorcycle sub or two and everyone just gets all hateful. I got better shit to do than parent people I don’t knows manners (I know we wish all mods gave as little shit as I do)
quandjereveauxloups@reddit
Oh no! People get up in arms about...checks notes...safety!
And by the way, not all ATGATTers are "religious about their cause". If you want to dress for the ride or to show off, I'm fine with that. Just do your stunting behind me so I don't get caught up in it if some fucktard spills.
gconsier@reddit
It’s one thing to be all about gear. I’m all about gear. Obviously not all but some people in everything take shit too far and just start name calling and I’ve seen threatening etc. I’ve seen a bunch of I hope you crash and get fucked up and killed stuff. I just assume it’s adults and let them argue it out. Both sides of argument report shit and like I said I’m not their parent. Reddit isn’t a safe place people will be mean to each other. Just annoying sometimes getting pulled into childish bickering. Like the other guy said, that doesn’t convince people. Being funny and or supportive etc tends to get people to wear a helmet. Honestly a “I buried my friend” IMO goes a lot further than “I hope you crash and die” if you want the to wear gear. Honestly IMO I think a lot of people don’t care they just want an outlet to be cyber bullies which is as adorable as it is funny as it is annoying.
gconsier@reddit
It’s ok. He’s from Germany. Finger is finely tuned piece of get engineered appendage. It’s safe. Finger is also safety.

hope this is a rage bait post but if not:
1) Always Keep Firearm Pointed in a Safe direction
2) Treat All Guns as Though They are Loaded
* !! 3) Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger until You are Ready to Shoot
4) Always Be Sure of Your Target and What’s Beyond It
Lawrence_skywalker@reddit
You come from Germany and bought a fucking S&W shield? Wheres the walther? Where's the HK.
But in all seriousness the shield was fire. Back in the days. There are better options these days.

Rule #1. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded
Rule #2. Never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot
Rule #3. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you’re ready to fire
Rule #4. Keep the weapon on safe until you intend to fire
gp_plus@reddit
4 Know your target and what’s beyond
While it’s certainly good practice to keep the safety on, that’s generally not one of the main 4 firearm rules.
secret_alpaca@reddit
And not all guns have a safety
5cott@reddit
When handling a firearm, YOU are the safety. Never rely on any mechanical safety.
Bfizzle62@reddit
This is the correct response
sorrybutidgaf@reddit
I can tell, but you have a fun time with it and just because you may be in a constitutional carry state doesnt mean you dont have the responsibility to learn EVERYTHING you can about that thing before using it! And while using it ofc. Have fun, shoot straight.

spambot_mods@reddit
Awesome .
Now,
Treat. Never. Keep. Keep.
TREAT every weapon as if it is loaded.
NEVER point a weapon at anything you don't want to destroy.
KEEP the weapon on safe until you are ready to fire.
KEEP your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire.
TPK_MastaTOHO@reddit
Another k, know what's behind your target.
tgpussypants@reddit
KKK? I don't think so! I'd rather accidentally shoot someone than be an accidental racist.
TPK_MastaTOHO@reddit
Hope there's not a minority behind your intended target I guess..
spambot_mods@reddit
Oh shit. Somebody better check on Carl
HybridP365@reddit
That is absolutely the worst mnemonic I've ever seen. And isn't even correct. Tons of guns don't even have safeties.
The 4 rules are DANK:
Don't put your finger on the trigger until you're ready to shoot.
Always treat guns as if they're loaded. Never point a gun as something you don't want to destroy.
Know your target and what's beyond it.
Safe-Assist-9866@reddit
