How do you Brits do Easter weekend?

Wondering what to expect Easter weekend. Will shops be open.
Is Easter a big holiday in the UK?
Any fun facts?
devensega@reddit
When I was young I'd go out with my mates and get proper fucked on a bank holiday bender.
Now I'm old I'll mow the lawn and cook a roast. Maybe lamb.
I'll eat some chocolate.
Demostravius4@reddit
I've done some gardening, cooking a roast this evening, and eaten a chocolate egg.
Simple!

Same. We (late 30s-early 40s) were discussing and reminiscing on the Easter weekends of yore when we'd hit the boozer asap after 5 on a Thursday straight from the office and fight through the crowds 10 deep at the bar to get served and just go until Sunday afternoon. Everyone was the same, atmosphere was great. Now with remote/hybrid working and teams based all over the country, that doesnt seem to exist for the younger folk. Even the pubs we'd go to 10 years ago are either closed or dying a slow, pitiful death. I dont even drink anymore
Kind_Ad5566@reddit
Good old days.
4 days in Gt Yarmouth.
Pubs shutting at 2pm, opening again at 5.
Lucky if we ate a KFC all weekend.
Now, just looking forward to a quiet pint with the Mrs and maybe a family meal.

Sunday drinking on a bank holiday weekend... Ah good times.
smokeyjoe03@reddit
Friday and Monday are bank holidays, which means a lot of people get two extra days off work (RIP hospitality and retail workers). Being the first bank holiday weekend after the clocks have gone forward, it also means people will try and get their BBQ going but it will inevitably rain.
Wallygonk@reddit
So we basically just eat a shit tonne of food indoors whilst watching telly for 4 days straight. A bit like Christmas really but without the decorations, presents and songs.

Roast lamb with rosemary and mint sauce, red wine. Visit daughter and sil and give Easter eggs to the grandkids As it looks like stormy weather laze about on the couch or potter at home. If it was nice we might go out to a National Trust house or plant something in the garden. Chocolate orgy Possibly a video call from other relatives.
Zahgurim65@reddit
Easter Sunday usually consists of chocolate, breakfast, chocolate, massive Sunday roast (sometimes lamb but this year it happens to be a turkey crown) with all the trimmings, watching TV, more chocolate, bed. This year will probably be no different. I can't recall Easter being much different when I was a kid except in the 70s when my mum was feeling churchy we'd be dragged off to church in uncomfortable clothes (checked worsted trousers which itched like hell) and suffered through an interminable service, go home and resume Easter Sunday as normal. It was a bit better when I was a kid though because at least someone else was doing the cooking.

Saturday is a normal Saturday. Friday and Monday are bank holidays, some lucky people don't have to work. I do. Its not special any more, it used to ve a bug deal. Its just a long weekend now. If tge weather's ok, there may be some bbqs happening. That's about it.
ThatSamShow@reddit
We will eat some chocolate eggs and do the same thing we do most Sundays. Oh, and there are a few extra days off work.
We don't "celebrate" these religious events like other countries do. Actual attendance at religious services over Easter is low, with only about 5% of adults attending church weekly, and they estimate just 10% observe Easter entirely religiously.
It's just not a thing over here and is used for extra days off and gobbling chocolate eggs.

It depends on whether you're a practising Christian or not. It's similar to Christmas now in that it's more about the chocolate eggs and fluffy bunnies than Jesus. It's still 'tradition' for us more mature people to have a roasted dinner.
For my family, as non-practising Christians/Agnostics it's no meat Friday evening meal - usually Fish and Chips, or home cooked fish or non-meat based meal (Cheese and Onion Flan with Baked Potato, Beans or Coleslaw. Saturday is a pretty normal day. D-I-Y if there's any to be done. Out in the garden if the weather is good. If we're very lucky with the weather a BBQ, or we go to the cinema. Easter Sunday is usually roasted lamb (we can't afford that now so we have chicken). We usually have a cheesecake or lemon based dessert as there's too much chocolate around already! Easter Monday is usually a visit to a Bank Holiday Market or Car Boot, depending on what's on and whether the weather is good or not.

I have my annual diabetes check next week, blood test on tuesday, diabetes nurse bollocking at the end of the week, so easter eggs put off for 7 days
smnthb90@reddit
Or, hear me out here, eat all the easter eggs, raise that hba1c up a bit (it'll take some serious effort to raise it all that much in a few days but if any time of year is the time to try it, easter is), get the bollocking but then next year, save the easter eggs and look like you've made a nice improvement

I don't 'do' Easter now my kids are all older, we still have a roast lamb dinner though. We just chill together. It hasn't ever been a huge deal for us previously either, the kids got eggs and took part in Easter activities at school. We are not religious so feels a bit wrong to go all in tbh
braiding_water@reddit (OP)
Do you color eggs & Easter bunny stuff?
BarefootBagLady@reddit
They made cards and took part in the Easter bonnet parade at nursery and early primary school (v competitive lol) Made cards and did the colouring. The dyed eggs, painted eggs and learned about the Easter story, and also what other cultures and religions (historical and present) celebrated and their traditions etc
I went with new beginnings and spring being the time that most animals were having babies and all the trees and plants started to awaken, but also to respect others in their beliefs.
There are a few events where I live, there is one huge egg rolling locally. Various Easter egg hunts etc.
AdorableEmu5386@reddit
Little kids paint eggs, make easter bonnets (using card, tissue and crepe paper, or make little baskets from card and tiny fluffy chick ornaments, and roll their eggs (chocolate) in the park, with adults organising easter egg hunts for the kids or at least when I was growing up. I don't think there's a one size fits all way to mark the occasion these days.

Big supermarkets have to close Easter Sunday. It is a big holiday in terms of people off work / school but not really with anything specific that people do. Some like to have a big roast dinner. Or go away for the weekend. Visit family. Eat chocolate eggs.
kimlesim@reddit
Big supermarkets don’t have to close on Easter.
Spare-Egg24@reddit
Easter is a big one for impact on shops/services. Supermarkets etc will be shut on Sunday some might have reduced hours on Monday.
I think they legally have to close for 2 holiday days a year and most do this on Christmas day and Easter Sunday
kimlesim@reddit
The big supermarket next to me is only closed Christmas Day
DaddyStoat@reddit
Most of the bigger shops will be closed. Corner shops, takeaways, Tesco Express, garages, etc will be open and doing business as usual.
braiding_water@reddit (OP)
Ah! Good to know. I was wondering & I did pick up some things from the market today in case Sunday was closed.
MrBarberella@reddit
Whether or not the shops are open depends where you are.
In Scotland, basically everything is open roughly as normal, there’ll be exceptions. Supermarkets will be open their usual hours, except Aldi and Lidl. Other shops will be open as normal for the most part. Places that shut public holidays will be shut Friday and Monday I expect.
The first time I found myself in England on Easter I found out it was quite a different story. A lot more places were closed.
I have no experience of Wales at Easter so I don’t know about there.
kimlesim@reddit
I was looking for someone to comment on Scotland. All the English people saying shops are closed in the UK when it just simply isn’t true 😂 Easter just isn’t as big of a deal here basically like Valentine’s Day again.

Easter Egg hunt for our children. They are in their late thirties. The concealing of eggs and tiny, fluffy chicks in our garden has become an art form. What is worse, when they have recovered all the hidden objects, they then hide them for their unfortunate parents to seek.
There is usually a substantial meal of some kind, but this year it will be fish pie rather than roast beast, as Child #1 is going to fiance's parents for Easter Sunday and I doubt they will want two roasts in a row.
BertBlenkinsop@reddit

UK Easter Bank Holiday - chocolate, DIY, gardening, go the pub a couple of extra nights since it's a bank holiday and curse the crappy bank holiday weather (which looks like it's going to outdo the traditional crappy bank holiday weather by a considerable margin this year) be glad it's a 4 day working week next week, count down the days until the next bank holiday at the end of the month.

I can't believe how ignorant you are .
The actual story is that He was stuck in a cave and the Easter Bunny was out delivering chocolate eggs and heard his muffled cries for help before rolling away the rock blocking the cave entrance and freeing Him .
That's why we still give chocolate eggs - to remember the bunny and the rock and the freedom of Christ .

Eat roast lamb on the Sunday. I am not looking forward to this because my mum died and I am likely the person nominated to cook the lamb.
Some religiously sincere people go to Church (and probably some insincere people as well. Schools affiliated with churches have a weird - probably unearned - cachet and getting an affidavit from a priest/vicar saying that you're a nice committed parishioner is part of getting your child in. My friend achieved this with a bottle of alcohol, which is a lot less bother).

I've got the Triduum masses to attend (Catholic), and will have a big meal to break the fast - then join fellow Brits at the pub. A lot of people also visit family over Easter, so the roads will be busier than normal. If you're going on a route that's already disrupted (e.g. by roadworks), find another way to travel.

More of the same on Easter Monday. Shops are closed Sunday and hours reduced on Monday.
New_Line4049@reddit
The Friday and Monday around the weekend are bank holidays, this means banks are closed. Traditionally this meant all buisnesses would shut down too and everyone got 2 extra days off work. These days a lot of buisness does shutdown, but some retail, particularly supermarkets/grocery stores still open, just on reduced hours. Its pretty common for restraunts, pubs, and other entertainment establishments to be open too, but you may pay increased prices, and may have to book ahead to guarantee getting in, lots of people go out for the day, or for a meal etc. Many attractions you might go to for a day out will run special events over the weekend, often aimed at kids. Easter egg hunts are common. People, especially with kids, paint boiled eggs and eat lots of chocolate (in the shape of eggs, but bigger)

Friday & Monday are bank holidays so shops will either open late & shut early, or be shut completely (same on Easter Sunday).
Some people will see it as a religious holiday & so will attend various church services, & might follow various religious rules l/traditions around things like food (lent, etc)
For more secular people it will be treated as more of a social holiday & they’ll either be off on a short holiday for the long weekend/visiting family/having a family dinner (often something like roast lamb/chicken) There will also be a lot of people out for pub lunches or community events (fairs, etc) or family walks & things if the weathers at all nice
And of course there will be an absolute s**t tonne of chocolate consumed, usually egg themed

Friday is for fish & chips, and Sunday is for lamb roast and chocolate. Otherwise, you’ll probably find that more shops and other things are closed on Sunday and have shorter opening hours on Monday, but it’s not as shut down as things are on Christmas Day.

Stuff will be shut on Sunday.
We will be drunk.
People might eat a chocolate egg

Pub, get pissed and sleep it off

Easter Sunday shops are closed generally. It's when most people have their Easter roast and egg hunts for the kids.

What shops do you want?
If you're a tourist, yes, everything will be very very open.
You asked "is it a big holiday" - I don't know how you define that.
It's a holiday.
Some people do stuff. Some don't.
Banks and stuff might be closed.
