4k vs 1440p

should i get a 4k or 1440p monitor? i have an rtx 5080, and mainly play single player games not esports shooters and stuff, is the better clarity of 32" 4k worth the big performance hit? or is 1440p better? thanks
BraevGhost@reddit
Personally I like 1440 getting high frames with out having to use fake frames that comes with input lag, ghosting etc is more than worth it imo.
MigatteNoGokuiVegeta@reddit
Recently bought a 4K Oled Best monitor ever!!!
lijo1990@reddit
1440p 27" is the sweet spot.
CommandShot1398@reddit
If I had a limited budget, I would go with 1440p and a better panel. Like OLED.

4k
hersheysquirtertime@reddit
4k try them both in store if able and you will understand
donut4ever21@reddit
I have a much weaker GPU than yours, RX9070XT, and I, too, play only single player games. I have three 27" 4k monitors, one of which is 120hz. It's the best decision of my life. I rarely even need to enable FSR. Always high refresh rate on the highest settings.
External_Safe_7787@reddit (OP)
ok thanks thats great to know! i actually considered the 9070 xt a while ago before i decided nvidia was best for my uses and found it reduced to just over msrp. what games do you play, and how much fps do you get at different settings + levels of upscaling? also what other specs does your pc have, because i likely have a better cpu too
donut4ever21@reddit
I play several single player games. God of war, tomb raider, Alan wake 2, Hogwarts legacy, Darksiders, borderlands 2, 3, crimson desert, the last of us. The only games that gave me low fps and needed upscaling were the shadow of tomb raider, and the last of us 1 and 2. They both pulled somewhere in the 30s and with upscaling they reach 50 - 60 fps. Other games start at 70 - 90 fps without fsr, and blow to 100 - 110+ with it. Older games can get 6000 fps if you had the monitor. LMAO. It's amazing and you won't regret it at all.
External_Safe_7787@reddit (OP)
ive got ryzen 7 9850x3d, you know gpu, 32gb 6000mhz cl30 ddr5 ram, windows 11 home, so much less cpu bound and faster ram so should perform much better, obviously amd on linux is better than nvidia on linux, but windows the 5080 is better
donut4ever21@reddit
You have a powerhouse, my friend š
External_Safe_7787@reddit (OP)
thanks :) i will decide between 1440p and 4k but probably 4k, unless prices go up then i might have to get 1440p
naturtok@reddit
People with 4ks will tell you 4k is the way to go. People with 1440ps will tell you don't bother with 4k, 1440p is more than enough and you'll appreciate the extra real frames more than the marginal boost to pixel density. I think 1440p is the functional endgame for 32", guess what sort of monitor I have.
External_Safe_7787@reddit (OP)
a 1440p monitor . . . ?
naturtok@reddit
Yeah, what else would I be talking about lol
External_Safe_7787@reddit (OP)
so you think i should get a 1440p over 4k monitor? it would be 27" 1440p vs 32" 4k . . . its hard it seems like an even split between people saying either, someone with a 9070 xt and am4 build said they love 4k, while another with a 4090 regretted upgrading to 4k from 1440p
naturtok@reddit
At the end of the day, you're talking about a monitor you're going to be a few feet away from, where the pixel density is going to be dense enough that you won't be able to make out individual pixels. Do you value slightly more pixel density for crisper edges, or do you value a decent improvement to performance (since 4k has over double the pixels your GPU would need to render)? If you're doing any sort of fast paced game personally I'd lean performance, but that's just me.
External_Safe_7787@reddit (OP)
i just play single player cinematic games really, i dont play any esports or shooters etc, and even if i did i would probably be maxing out dlss or even running it at 1080p on 4k to be super competitive, but i dont really play hardly any competitive games at all
Formal-Leather-8537@reddit
I was contemplating the same thing and I just went with the 4k monitor with a 5070 ti and I donāt regret it
wsteelerfan7@reddit
1440p ultra wide is the answer
Africa-Unite@reddit
Where does the Samsung G7 57" inch stand in all this? I thought that was 1440p but I'm hearing that it's maybe 4K?
elmiggii@reddit
I tried it at Canada Computers, before going for the 39in, but because of lack of vertical size, it felt really small. Plus, most games only support regular UW. Is there a new OLED version?
wsteelerfan7@reddit
Idk but personally that width goes too far
elmiggii@reddit
1440p ultra wide OLED is the answer. My 39in LG was a gamechanger for me
wsteelerfan7@reddit
Same for my Alienware. It feels so cool that I don't move my PC to my 4k TV anymore because it's just a worse experience
Tequilazu@reddit
There's no reason not to go 4K, currently on MPG 321URX + 5080 myself.
wellings@reddit
I just picked up my first 4k monitor this week at 27''. I have read that some text clarity is lost at 32'' and that 4k 27'' provides the most pixel density. I use my computer for office and gaming so the text clarity was important.
I have a 5080 on my gaming PC and it drives 4k very well. I opted to stay away from OLED due to needing it for office use and went with this: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1916450-REG/acer_um_hx5aa_501_nitro_xv275k_p5biipruzx_27.html
Amazingly it was on sale from B&H for like $380 earlier this week. Maybe it will go on sale again.
I play mainly single player games and right now I'm playing Spiderman Remastered at ultra settings, ray tracing, etc. with only a Ryzen 5700X3D and it works great.
Toast_Meat@reddit
With a 5080, I personally recommend 4K 32-inch if it's in your budget. It's exactly what I've got and it's peak.
My upgrade path: 27/1440p -> 27/4K -> 32/4K.
Each of these steps were worth it, especially while I also upgraded to faster hardware between monitors. With the 5080 it's fairly easy to achieve high frame rates at 4K and looks best on a 32-inch, in my opinion. You might have to utilize features such as DLSS and Frame Generation in some games that are demanding, but those features have gotten really good in the past little while. Worth it.

Electronic_Desk_3170@reddit
hi, do you have a budget? also what is the refresh rate of the monitors youre considering? also, have you considered getting an OLED? that will make the experience so much better, but 4k oleds are really expensive so you might want to get a 1440p high refresh rate oled.
External_Safe_7787@reddit (OP)
it will be like 4k 240hz oled/1440p 240 or 360hz oled, both oled, budget around £700 full price (not reduced), for 4k it would be 32", 1440p would be 27"
Electronic_Desk_3170@reddit
id go witth the 32'' 4k 240hz in that case.
External_Safe_7787@reddit (OP)
ok thanks i will, if the 4k goes over £700 then it will be too expensive, but if its under then i can afford either
xLemonade@reddit
1440p needs to die honestly. It was just a stop gap between full HD and 4k. With the hardware available now and DLSS/FrameGen etc⦠itās never been a better time for 4k
FusionIsTrash@reddit
if you can afford 4k, then yeah
i prefer stable fps with high in game details, so i went with 1440p on the 5080
WohoBoho@reddit
Please look at game benchmarks with 5080s and 4k resolution if you're play7ng FPS games. Most people here are probably happy with 60 fps.
Kakirax@reddit
I started at 4K but went down to a 1440p ultrawide. The 4K clarity was nice but I much prefer a higher refresh rate
SteakandTrach@reddit
I use a 42ā LG C2 OLED TV as a computer monitor and itās freaking glorious. I donāt think I can go back to a normal size monitor ever again. I couldnāt find anything in the monitor market that checked off all the same boxes as a mass produced TV. (4k, OLED, 120Hz, Gsync compatible, HDR, etc) And on sale it was even cheaper than anything comparable. Iāve been using it for 2 years now and itās just been great. I was worried at first about it being too big and having to move my head but I sit probably 36ā back and itās very comfortable to use.
ecktt@reddit
I went with a 4K 32 qdoled + 5070ti and I cannot say I am disappointed. Things look amazing. Mostly from the true blacks of the QDOLED, but the added resolution is noticeable.
At the same time, 4K is challenging, in that I am nowhere close to the 240fps that the 240Hz monitor could support, and FPS dips are worse.
If I had to make the purchase over again, I would still go 4K over 1440p. My use case is a little different, as I also watch TV/Movies on my monitor, and the added desktop area is very helpful for productivity apps.
You're getting 5080, so that added 15% performance should make your experience noticeably better.
If gaming is all you do, with 1440p might be the better choice.
Afude@reddit
DLSS 4,5 is so good that 4k is the answer for single player games
badman12345@reddit
I'm the wrong person to ask. I still use a 1920 x 1200 16:10 60hz dinosaur.
Personally, I could never really see the allure in sitting 2 ft in front of a 32" screen. 24" is the sweet spot for me.
fray_bentos11@reddit
For 2 feet. 27" is better. 27" is very cramped especially for work.
badman12345@reddit
Note the "for me."
I do engineering and CAD design. I have 2x 24" 1920 x 1200 monitors and have been using them for almost 13 years now. Plenty of real estate across the 2 monitors.
If it was a single monitor, yes 27" might be more beneficial for me.
I used to work for a guy (president of the company) that required all of us to use 32" 1080p TVs (not even monitors) on our desks. I (and everyone else in the design department) HATED that. He was never in his life a designer but insisted that he knew what was best for us to use, and he was a real "Type A" personality that would not bend.
Cleyland96@reddit
4K, 100% it isnāt even a debate and as others have said you can play 1440 on a 4K screen you canāt play 4K on a 1440..
Your GPU will smash 4K too, I have a 4080 Super and it does extremely well, a 4080 or 5080 is wasted at 1440p in my opinion unless youāre playing competitive games like COD and want the frames, that said I get 110fps on the absolute max settings when playing MW3 (2023 version) which is more than enough as I only play on zombies.
fray_bentos11@reddit
You sort of can play 4K on a 1440p screen. DLDSR or DLAA makes a massive difference to image clarity/sharpness at 1440p in some games.
Cleyland96@reddit
It does but itāll never be true 4K so if I was the OP and needed a monitor Iād go for 4K, especially for single player games.
But the other caveat is 1440 on a 4K monitor doesnāt look as good as it would on a native 1440 screen, but with a 5080 Iād just jump straight to 4K, Iāve only got my 4080 Super this week and before that I was using a 2080ti and still somewhat āmanagedā
TheShiningDarkOne@reddit
You can just play in 1440p on a 4k screen.
cha0ss0ldier@reddit
Why would you do this when DLSS exists? It accomplishes the same thing and looks way better
1440p on a 4k screen looks terrible because it's not 1:1 for scaling
cheeseypoofs85@reddit
Rendering down and not using upscaling always looks worse than native on the lower res screen
_--Yuri--_@reddit
As someone who used to play 1600x900 on 1080p displays, it's really not a massive difference to the point where you should downgrade your overall experience for one or two games you can't run at native or upscale
And on the extreme end that feels worth noting in any competitive game for years pros have gone below native for frames
(CS and stretched res obviously, and fortnite pros playing at 1600x900 was fairly common)
PeytonWatson14@reddit
Lower quality but more frames?
Offline86@reddit
I would look for a good 1440p with solid ppi.
EstablishmentSad@reddit
5080 with DLSS will do 4k with great framerates. Every so often there is a game that you NEED a 5090 to be able to get that smooth performance on max settings, but 99% of the time you are g2g...and it will be like that for years. The only thing will be when the next gen consoles come out and really start getting more demanding, or a major PC release comes out that wasn't dumbed down to run on weaker hardware.
Upper-Mixture8643@reddit
4k for sure, got a 42in and canāt go back now
prinzeugn@reddit
4k if you don't care about super high refresh rates. I have a 4k OLED and a 5080 and it works great.
Fearless_Parking_436@reddit
32ā go for 4k, with smaller screen 1440p is also okay
Calx9@reddit
For a 5080 I went with 4k for once and omfg I thought I wouldn't like it. But it's game changing honestly.
DiarrheaPope@reddit
If it was my choice I'd go 1440 an spend a little more for OLED ultrawide, unless I had a 4090 or something. You can definitely run 4k tho no problem.
ThereAndFapAgain2@reddit
At 32" you really want the extra pixel density of 4k. I have a 5080 and a 32" 4K OLED and it is great, older games run at native res no problem, and with newer games you can just use DLSS to get you up to a framerate you are happy with and it looks extremely good these days.
StunningPush8421@reddit
just go 4k you can always use more upscaling
