Do you have any earplug recommendations for the aging mosher?

As many of us do, I have come to regret ignoring my elders when it comes to caring for my hearing due to permanent tinnitus. So I now wear earplugs to gigs (and the cinema, theatre, pretty much any vaguely loud event). I've used Ear Peace earplugs which are pretty decent for audio quality, but I am the kind of almost 40 year old who enjoys a bit of friendly violence at a gig. With ear plugs, this generally means that instead of the music, I just listen to myself gasping. Are there any ear plugs that will allow me to spend a gig in the pit, whilst still enjoying the music, or is this one of those situations similar to wearing earplugs and hearing yourself eat at horrendous volumes?

You can get pricy musician ones that they mould to the shape of your actual ear but I think this is an innate issue - you hear more internal sounds as external is blocked.

Mack's earplugs are interesting. Little balls of silicone putty that you push into your ear. Not expensive.

If you really want the very best - volume cut without loss of fidelity - look at ACS They’re custom moulded to fit to your ear canal (you basically need to get the putty stuff poured into your ear so they can get a perfect mould) and give a specific volume cut (10dB, 15dB, 20dB). Got a nephew who’s a professional musician and wears them for every gig he plays or goes to - absolutely swears by them. As an ageing (and long bald) mosher myself, I wish they’d been around when I was younger! Maybe a bit expensive for the occasional gig though, unless you’re flush and determined to get the best possible sound quality

Loop seem to be the most popular. Is he pretty active on stage? It's mainly not being forced to listen to my desperate panting that I'm after over the Ear Peace ones, but I think this might be an inevitable byproduct.

Aye. He still plays once a week, but when he was younger it was a huge amount. He has terrible tinnitus too, was worried, so just picked these up for him and he says they are good. Reading the other replies, sounds like Loop are the optimal ones. Hope they improve things for you.

I've used eggz, loop, cheap commet ones off eBay, I'd probably say eggz were the best for live music, they kinda let some audio through but filtered. I currently use construction style overear defenders (I play drums) not sure they'd last long in a pit though

Ive tried Eargasm and Loop which are the two popular brands. Eargasm has slightly better audio than the loop but its uncomfortable for long periods due to the triple flange design Loop I can wear for hours without any issue, its incredibly comfortable and I dont get any ringing after the concert. Audio is a bit muffled but its fine

I think it's partly the nature of ear plugs - you're blocking external sound so you hear your own more. It's one of the reasons I hate them if I'm walking around or running and listening to music. I do have some Loops that aren't too bad though.
