I prefer the Better Than Ezra and Red Hot Chili Peepers versions of that title

A near perfect movie if you take out the video game scene. May have to watch this again soon.

Moby is a doofus but I love this song and I love The Beach. I watch it frequently during the winter when the weather is at its coldest and grayest. The soundtrack is amazing and takes me to a peaceful place. Porcelain, Pure Shores, Spinning Away and Voices? Bangers, all of them.

The Beach actually inspired me to study abroad. The line where he says, "Everyone talks about doing something different, but they always end up doing the same damn thing. This is our chance to actually do something different." That line was the clincher for me. My semester abroad completely changed my trajectory in life and led me to where I am today, an ESL professor. In short, let's just say that I have fond memories of that movie.

Yep yep, i'm a practitioner of separating the art from the artist. Because no amount of socially unacceptable faux pas, missteps, blunders, or even worse things, that a person may commit (and we all do, because who can claim to be infallible?) can undo any of the positive aspects of what they offer the world at large. Plenty of artists, scientists, and philosophers through the ages have been horrible people in their personal lives, but the amount of people that have benefited from their works vastly outnumber the relatively few that had to put up with them directly and only for as long or short as their individual life lasted. Anyway. There's no reason to blame Moby for being the doofus he is, as if he could help it, unless you know of a way of being someone other than you are

How far are you willing to take that stance? A certain Austrian artist comes to mind.

Obelisko78@reddit (OP)

Strawman argument, and false equivalency How many people did that failed artist actually throw into the acid baths and ovens himself? And he's not, and will never be, considered an artist, scientist, or philosopher, because he was a politician; a politician being only a self-promoting charlatan, mouthpiece, and a tool, who claims to be a servant of the citizenry while really only seeking self-enrichment. The atrocities done in Europe during WW2 were the will of the populace, who were complicit, and it was they that committed all the actual crimes against humanity whether in a military uniform or not. Yet their government made sure to call what they were doing "good" for the fatherland, and even wrote laws to make sure it was all legal. Not unlike a certain other nation, which is currently working on doing the same thing

Lol, ok bud. It's cute you learned some logical fallacy terms, but you may want to learn what they actually mean before referencing them. I'd also suggest refraining from making logical fallacies (no true Scotsman) when accusing others of doing so, it instantly undermines your argument.
View on Reddit #82291327

Obelisko78@reddit (OP)

It's cute that you use "lol", and that you googled some terms that you likely had never encountered before kiddo. You keep on arguing with yourself and the wind though, it's likely the only argument you'll ever win

Oh boy, does it. I have the VHS of The Beach still, and can recall the exact last time I popped it in the player. That's a bittersweet pain, but painful nonetheless. Also my shoulder *still* hurts from lifting the box holding that tape, all my other VHS tapes and my tape player last weekend.

Waking up sucks but about the emotional pain, there are movies that define a generation. For me is this, y tu mamá también and Garden State.

This movie holds a special place in the heart of all those who experienced the Khao Sanh Road in the 90s or 00s. It was an era, now long gone.

Yet another thing that social media ruined?
View on Reddit #82280148

superdookietoiletexp@reddit

Yes and for a whole host of reasons. Back in the day, people traveled for the experience. Now people travel for social media clout. And a good part of the experience was haggling and avoiding being scammed. Rideshares and e-bookings have put a stop to that. But more so, traveling used to expose you to different worlds. Now people’s world is their phone, which they carry with them. How they spend their day and who they interact with doesn’t really change, regardless of where they are in the world.

Within reason. Creepy behavior is one thing, and politics is a shrug, but deviant criminal behavior is another. I can't watch the Cosby Show anymore. It use to be a top 10 for me, but I can't look at Cosby and not think about all of the raping. Same goes for R Kelly and the problematic behavior of Kevin Spacey.

I went to a Moby show in DC during the mid-2000s. Halfway through, he launched into a lecture about his winning strategy to get DC statehood. It was horrendous. I usually want artists to talk more during their shows - particularly when it’s off-the-cuff - but the show would have been much better if he’d just shut up and played his records.

This film prob tops my list of most watched over the years. Anytime I couldn’t sleep, I’d pack a bowl, put in this dvd and I’d be out 1/2 way through it. My wife absolutely hates it, because of how many times she’d wake up to the dvd menu music looping over and over and over again. The scene where they get to see the beach for the 1st time and porcelain is playing, is such a great combo. Say what you will about Moby and how overused in commercial media this album was, but I think this was the best use of it. Great track by UNKLE at the end, also (Lonely Soul) The book is a good read, also. I believe it’s Alex Garland’s 1st. I don’t love how the production left Maya Bay in bad shape & the irony of this island being shut down to tourism for years at a time to let nature recover, is not lost on me. Definitely on the bucket list to visit some day and listen to Porcelain while I’m sitting in the sand

DiligentDaughter@reddit

It's super self absorbed of me to admit, but it's not on my list because how many people I'd be sharing it with. A large part of the magic and beauty of the place was the lack of people. If I were rich/famous enough to close it for personal use for a weekend, absofuckinlutely. Plus swimming is banned, and I doubt my ability to follow that rule. The heat and that crystal water calling out for toesies... I really can't stand when people think nature conservation rules don't apply to them, and I'd hate to be one of them. (I live in a place with some stunning natural sites, one such attraction features subalpine wildflowers. Staying ON THE PATH is incredibly important to conservation, yet there's always some jagoff who needs the perfect insta photograph)

Remember how Eminem hated Moby because Moby was like don't be problematic and Eminem took that really personally and said nobody listens to techno? In hindsight I think it was a bad breakup.

The Beach! The part where he was trippin acting like a video game, came out of nowhere compared to the rest of the esthetic of the movie. I'm not a fan of Moby as a person, but damn I love a lot of his music.

Made more sense coming from the book. Richard had spiraled, became antisocial and was obsessed with the game boy. It helped show how he was able to kill the Swede by compartmentalizing violence into a video game action. After killing the Swede he was able to renter the fractured/failing community.

A few great ambient tracks on that album / the expended B-side edition. The sky is broken, downside , Inside, rushing.. memory gospel.. novio (was that on play?.. ) Much of "Play" was very liberally licenced commercially. Every other advert used music culled from it for a time, film soundtracks, call waiting music. Those who were around at that time probably treat most of that album with a jaded familiarity. Great though otherwise.
