Do you class your local pub as the one you visit regularly or the one closest to you?

Your local is whichever one *you* frequent the most. It has nothing to do with proximity.

I'd be inclined to disagree, there should be an element of proximity involved. If there are lots nearby then can choose from them, but it would seem silly to class a pub miles away your local because you happen to go frequently, I think.

This is my local, it is shit. That one is my favourite but it's further away.

I would say it still needs to be local to you. *A* local pub is one within a reasonably "local" proximity to you. *Your* local pub is your preference within that category of "local" pubs. If you're travelling to the next village/town over and passing several pubs on the way, I'd say that's no longer a local pub.

I think Proximity is a key factor just not the only one.. a Local is local to you. There is a pub i got to in ireland a lot when I am travelling and people know me and more than i visit other pubs that are nearby - but its not my local..

That's a fair point. I have locals in Manchester and Blackpool, and I live nowhere near either.

The one you go to most, I'm sat in mine typing this. https://preview.redd.it/kb3ivmnx3ssg1.jpeg?width=3060&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=75c93ea8967048a887c18d23438648256238feae

I don't have a overly close local. I consider the pub I go to the most my local. I know the names of a lot of the staff and they're pretty good by me. Even got me a wooden spoon when Wales finished bottom of the six nations last season which was nice of them

Local to me is the one I visit regularly it’s the one if we are debating where to go that’s where we head… if I went to the nearest one to me I’d probably be lucky to only be stabbed the last thing that happened in there was the landlord smashed someone’s head in with a metal bar surprisingly this pub doesn’t come with a flat roof

Kind of a mix of the two. I'm very fortunate to have 2 pubs within a 2 minute walk if me and one is slightly closer but I prefer the one slightly further away so I refer to that one as my local.

My nearest pub is a fucking shithole. My local is a 17 minute walk away. If my local was as close as my nearest pub is, I would be the size of a house by now. And destitute.

The one I visit most regularly where I live. For example the one I visit most regularly in central London (where I work) I would classify as my work local. There are at least 10 pubs closer than this one but it is my favourite in the area. It is the same as my 'home' local. It is one of a few pubs and not the closest, but my favourite in the town.

DreamingofBouncer@reddit

Your local is the one where they know what you normally drink and your name. This doesn’t always work though as my local is a micro pub with an ever changing selection of drinks
View on Reddit #82279899

GabberZZ@reddit

It used to be the closest and the most visited until it went all fancy and super expensive. Now it's between the next closest and a local sports club.

Doesn’t have to be the nearest but does have to be…local The pub I probably visit most is in the city centre. But I’d never call that my local, I don’t live there.

crampsfanuk@reddit

To be your local it can't be miles away but doesn't have to be the nearest. I suppose that does change if you're more rural. If your village only has one pub surely that must be your local?
View on Reddit #82273238

Lukeautograff@reddit

Luckily mine is both and of the best in the city

The_Barnabarian@reddit

Combination of proximity and preference - it has to be reasonably close to be a local. But there are 3 pubs in my village, all similar distances away, but only one is my local.

DameKumquat@reddit

The one you visit regularly. Which probably isn't much further than the closest one, or you'd just go to the closest one. My local is about 10 minutes walk, as opposed to the nearest which is OK but now serves overpriced food and has no pool tables and was redecorated and had its name changed. Staff never last long. Whereas half the staff in my local have been there years.

baldeagle1991@reddit

My regular pub is the pub I go to the most. My local is one of the closest pubs to me. If there's a few a similar distance it's my favourite out of that selection. My local is 10 minutes down the road from me, I often pop in on my way to my regular pub.

my local is a walk or bus ride away as its basically were I used to live till I moved I haven't been to my new local yet.... but it does look rough as fuck lol

My Local burnt down almost 20 years ago now. But it's still my local! Well, not just mine, anytime it gets brought up we all call it "the local". What I guess is technically the "new" local, and has been for those 20 years, is still just "The Pub".
View on Reddit #82267924

Ballbag94@reddit

Imo it's the one closest to you, otherwise it's not really local by the definition of the word Lots of people saying "the one you visit most", the pub I visit weekly is 19 miles away, I don't see that it would make sense to call it my local

My local is a 10 minute drive away. It used to be a thirty second walk, but that one went downhill when it changed hands.

10 minute drive there, 20 minute drive back!
View on Reddit #82264957

TheDisapprovingBrit@reddit

Nah, only five minutes back because you don't need to worry about red lights. (for the avoidance of doubt, I mean 10 minutes in a taxi, I only drive there when I'm not drinking anyway)

The one i visit regularly. I walk past a pub to get to the one I consider my local. The one I walk past is a chain pub, built in the 1930s. It's fine. Beer and food is cheap and acceptable. The one I consider my local was built mid 1700s, isn't tied, has an excellent range of beer and fantastic food, a large beer garden, does regular events like beer festivals and family fetes, and is a genuine asset to the community. And the staff are all really friendly. To be fair, one is 10 minutes walk, the other 15 minutes walk, so neither is far away.

This is so good to hear, I'd love a local like that. What part of the UK, if you don't mind me asking?

The closest But in my case the pub I visit most often is the closest to my house, so the academic in my case

I visited a local one a few weeks ago with a friend for a quick catch up, being a quiet time of year before the tourists descend on us we thought it would be a good time to sit somewhere quiet. A few locals at the bar but plenty of places to sit. £13.something for a Guinness zero and a lager shandy. Not something I can afford to do regularly.

Hmmmmm its actually a mix.  I would use it for both

One I go to the most. The closest is just "the nearest". The one I regular, is the local.
View on Reddit #82265306

Salty-Sink-1853@reddit

I'd say its nearest, provided you go to it. However it depends how far the one you go to is. Your favourite pub (provided its within your village/town) is your local I'd say
View on Reddit #82264986

cgknight1@reddit

The nearest. If a pub becomes my local because the landlord knows what I drink and information then I am spending too much time in there.

Or maybe they're just good at their job? Perhaps your drink of choice is one they like too? Or one they absolutely detest?
