Breaking news: the Dacian Helmet of Coțofenești and the Dacian Bracelets have been found, but there is the issue of the compesating money. You think Romania should give the money back ?

Maybe a little context for non romanian ?
BiscottiExcellent195@reddit
in jan 2025 we sent this helmet, gold bracelets and other things to the netherlends to an exposition called "Dacia the land of gold and silver" iirc, that museum had some shit security and the artifacts got stolen, the helmet is from V - IV BCE
deviendrais@reddit
The thieves used the helmet’s ancient technology to dig Dacian tunnels underneath the museum and escape
BiscottiExcellent195@reddit
they returned it after they used it s power to meet Zamolxis, the god welcomed them with barrel of wine and told them to return the stolen artifacts and that they should only steal fron the Roman empire.

The Golden Helmet of Coțofenești, named after its find spot, was discovered in 1926 by Traian Simion, a farmer's child sheep herding in a meadow in the village of Poiana Coțofenești in Prayova County, Romania.
The enamored child initially treated it as a private article of play for some two weeks, after which it was used on the farm to water chickens, later being placed atop their coop. According to testimony, the top part of the helmet became detached from use after its discovery.
Subsequently, a local Romanian merchant, Ion Marinescu-Moreanu bought the helmet and corresponded with the head of the Romanian Ministry of Arts, Ion Marin Sadoveanu. In April 1929, the helmet was purchased for exhibition at the (now) National History Museum of Romania.
The remarkably preserved, ceremonial helmet is widely perceived as a masterpiece, crafted from an electrum alloy of 75.5% gold, 22.5% silver, 1% copper and a scattering of trace metals by a master Thracian goldsmith ca. 425 B.C.E. and is considered a national treasure of immeasurable value. It weighs 726.08 grams (25.612 ounces) and is 25.5 cm in height and 22.5 cm in diameter.
nastyreader@reddit
That helmet is as Dacian as the Netherlands is. No one knows who made it, but its age (is just a couple of centuries old) definitely disprove any claims of it being Dacian.

Currently, I'm working on the Neolithic sites in the Urfa region. Once I'm done here, I'll be focusing back on the Balkans and Thrace again.
We’re unearthing new Göbeklitepes as we speak. Can’t give any more details than that.
DrVital1s@reddit
Your country is one of the richest in term of archeological remains on earth, can't wait for you to discover more stuff. Btw, are there more ruins at Gobleki Teppe that haven't been dug yet ?
tomgatto2016@reddit
This is sooooooo cool, to think that we have such ancient remains of humans from the Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic, where agriculture wasn't even a concept yet, and people build such mega complexes. Sometimes I spend hours thinking of how they lived, what could their daily conversations be, how were they organised socially, what they dreamt of and which were their aspirations. Incredible really, you have such an important job and I admire all archeologists

The Thracian world was enormously rich civilisation on which base greeks created the whole “macedonian” fairy tale in 19 century

Thanks bro If you're interested in archaeology, let me give you an Instagram account to check out. In Gökçeada (Imbros), Turkey, structures dating back 8,800 years have been uncovered nearly contemporary with Göbeklitepe. It's incredibly exciting for the Balkans, the Aegean region, and even the whole world. You can do your research from there

Worried-Owl-9198@reddit
Yes but it remains undeciphered and the evidence is extremely scarce
No-Reach7166@reddit
Well there has been recent progress. But it doesn't mean the 15k-20k years old civilization was illiterate.

I like your idea, but unfortunately we can’t be such good friends because of their expansionist tendencies. Greece is an important historic and cultural ally, and Turkey is always threatening them. Not to mention what they did to Cyprus as well. Europe forgot about that a bit too quickly
REDscalemodels@reddit
Remind me which of greece and turkey has islands right next to the other's coastline
DeffoNotAnEngineer@reddit
And how is that a problem? Also not to mention.. the coastline used to be Greek until WW1
Hapciuuu@reddit
As a Romanian I don't judge Turkey for it's past because we weren't saints either, but after seeing how Tukey transformed Northern Cyprus into a Turkish colony reminds me of the Ottomans and makes me not trust the Turkish government. I think they would do the same thing to us if they could.

Vaisiamarrr@reddit
Daca esti in Germania de ce ai pretentia de la ei sa iti vorbeasca in alta limba doar pentru a te acomoda pe tine?
enndre@reddit
Am pretentia sa vorbeasca intr-o limba cunoscuta de catre toti interlocutorii atunci cand contextul profesioal o cere. E problema lor ca vorbesc in ce limba vor ei in pauze, in discutii private la birou, in "caterincile" lor sau stiu eu ce. In sedinte, in discutii de lucru verbale sau scrise, asteptarile sunt altele.
Faptul ca au dreptul sa vorbeasca doar in germana in Germania nu inseamna ca pot fii nepoliticosi in mod intentionat, in mod deosebit in cele unde este vorba sa iti ia si banii, ca esti la magazin, la o frizerie, la un local sau kneipe la ce vrei tu.
floare_salbatica@reddit
Worried-Owl-9198@reddit
As a Turk I honestly agree with you. If I were treated that way I would react the exact same way. Those ignorant comments and that ghetto mindset are just as embarrassing for us as they are frustrating for you.
Vaisiamarrr@reddit

What have it to do with our government? I almost bet our government didn't know about the artifacts at all. It was an agreement with a silly museum and some parties in Romania. Blame the museum! (Yes it's in the Netherlands, that doesn't blame the whole country!)
Worried-Owl-9198@reddit
In Turkey these matters are handled through official correspondence between diplomats and ministries, not just the museum itself. I am certain that the Dutch government is aware of this; it's impossible for them not to be. If they really aren't, then God help the Dutch.
Roberwt87@reddit
I bet you are right and stand corrected. But the museum is still to blame. Not our whole nation.
Worried-Owl-9198@reddit
I dont blame the citizens my point is that the ministry and the security authorities are the ones responsible.

But now to answer your original question; I think a part of the money deal can be kept by the Romanians. Not all of it.

The fact that the insurance was on only 5.7 million euros, for a presumably irreplaceable piece of history is purely Romanian.
smurfk@reddit
Well, you can't insure for the sum of "infinity of moneys" just because you think it's "irreplaceable".
StevenAdamsInDallas@reddit
You can insure it for at least a couple hundred mil.
Magnum_Gonada@reddit
It would mean higher costs for insurance if the evaluation was higher.
Dear-Ad1582@reddit
Yes but the evaluation always use existing references - standard prices for same type of objects - it is not the owner who say the price for insurance. It is always the insurer that set those. Unless they used Carpatica or Euroins, that is the insured value of the damn thing.
TheWalrusResplendent@reddit
Didn't they not have it reappraised for like 15 years when the legal maximum is 20?
StevenAdamsInDallas@reddit
Exactly, they didn't want to spare more for what they deem as irreplaceable. Meaning the historical value of this piece, in the eyes of the experts is $6mil.
Dear-Ad1582@reddit
You have no clue how insurance works do you?
StevenAdamsInDallas@reddit
Sure I don't, bud. It's good that you're such a esteemed scholar on law, a modern day Planiol.
andreiim@reddit
perhaps some of it. But it's not really a matter of opinion. There's strict rules about it. The rule sounds something like this... if it's found within x amount of time, use this formula that includes an evaluation, etc., etc.
And in my opinion it makes sense. If it wouldn't have been found for another 10 years, no money should have been given back, but since it was found somewhat fast, then some of the money is fine to be given back. I'm sure the formula takes into account the damage done to the artifacts themselves, the damage caused by them being stolen, and the damage caused by them missing for x amount of time. If all these damages are less than the paid compensation, which is the maximum possible damage, then the difference should be given back. And I'm sure it's gonna be just like that.
Guesstimating I would say about 40% of the money, maybe a bit more, will be paid back. But that's not really important, the important fact is that these objects can still be studied for a long time from now on as that's priceless.

DarkBladeSethan@reddit
I presume this was covered by insurance? Normally ( like automotive) if a stolen good is later retrieved that doesn't invalidate the original claim or payout. Likely the museum will face increased premium for next few renewal cycles.
That being said I am no expert in this particular policy type.

So, what were those peacekeepers meant to do? It was either give over the bosniak men or die along them. I'm not saying what they did was right, but looking at it logically, they were outgunned and outnumbered. They could have never held that safe area.
Elderberry-Mediocre@reddit
They alone provided the strongest deterrent. Even if they had chosen to defend Srebrenica butt naked, the Serbs would have hesitated to attack.
stefz0r777@reddit
The Serbs showed throughout the war that they were not going to back down from a gunfight with UN peacekeepers. I really think those Dutch soldiers were going to die there if they chose to fight. Best case scenario imo, a few get killed during the gunfight, then they surrender, and the massacre still happens. The whole war was a very complex situation that is probably too hard to grasp for us nowadays, but I can't in good conscience call those soldiers cowards.
Elderberry-Mediocre@reddit
Dereliction of Duty! Does it sound more soothing now?
stefz0r777@reddit
This would have applied if they were given the resources needed to fulfill their duty. I see this mostly as a fail from the UN, who was supposed to ensure that Srebrenica was an actual safe zone, not just a few Dutch soldiers who had no means to defends those citizens. The Serb forces knew the peacekeepers in the area were not equipped for the task. I feel like I have made my point quite clear, if for you they re still the ones to blame, nothing I will say will change your mind, and that's fine.

Roberwt87@reddit
And how about the Kurdisch and other minorities in Turkey? I know this is whataboutism. My point is to point a finger to someone, that means at least 3 fingers pointing back.
Stormrage44@reddit
Whataboutism is not a crime. It's a rare weapon we can wield against double standard and hypocrisy. And what I originally meant was Germans and Britons stealing hundreds of historical pieces from middle east and north africa.
Although your comment is absolutely not related to the topic, I will make it relatable.
Oldest written Kurdisch text is from 17th century. Kurds didn't exist in history before Seljuks' invasion of Persia. Their existence from that is proven both by Arabic and Ottoman sources but still so thin. It is very simple, because most Kurds (even today some do) lived as semi-nomadic herders. That doesn't mean they didn't exist. But that also doesn't mean they were ruling entire middle east and Anatolia for thousands of years.
Ever since the British (another Germanic entity) sat foot in middle east, they have been publishing non-evindential papers that base on speculation to tie them to antic age empires to give them claim. Then never ending terror and unrest followed the middle east.
Because of your (DE, UK, AU, NE, SW, DK) pro Indo European views, their ethno-fascist ideologies are supported in your countries. They can chant about dividing my country, a free national identity, freely in your streets (but any small word against Israel, your freedom of speech somehow vanish) and they honestly do believe they are the aryan race and Turks are mongols and all that nonsense. Being partly Kurdish I met many of them and experienced this firsthand.
There are many PKK sympathising diplomats such as Cem Özdemir or Dilan Yeşilgöz. No people form no other ethnic background had gone as far as them in politics.
I don't know what you meant about three fingers but I am very used to all fingers in west being towards us and I generally show a single finger back.

If anything, Romania should get back compensation, not Romania to give
RedMdsRSupCucks@reddit
Should we, yes... Will we, probably no

From my understanding after the press conference they recover only 2 bracelets out of 3 that were stollen. Anyway it's the lawyers. diplomats and historians problem now how much will give back.

Romania will give the money back if the artifacts are in good condition. If they are damaged, the money will cover the restoration. Romania should not keep the money because from the outside it will look bad. Really bad.
Key_World_3796@reddit
Money should be kept for the damage caused by not having the objects in custody all this time. It's not like absolutely nothing happened. When you rent out a car or an apartment, you still keep the money when you get it back.

Any source for that?

Turks should send us money for not using deodorant in public transport

Best-case scenario, Romania will repay the money in monthly installments over the next 20 years, provided it submits 500 pages of bureaucratic nonsense.
Usually, they will keep the money as a credit for future compensation in similar events.

What are the reasons to keep the money if you have the items back?

What money? Give us the hat back and it’s ok.
Whole_Obligation_776@reddit
I think it can be compensated but there should be some consequences. Not compensating anything would cause future thefts to be taken less seriously, like the victim already compensated so why bother.
But there should be some consequences. Romania should demand some assurances from the artifact hosting party, this can be about increased security, a public admission of failing responsibilities, or things more professionals than me can think of.
Either way it should be about elivating and better preserving the heritage of humanity.
So a midway between compensation and non-compensation seems a better option for me.

Pay back some of it, keep the rest.
UnhappyBreadfruit607@reddit
From what you have written they didn't properly guard it so they shouldn't get their money back (I don't know if there is a clause for returning back the money if they found it if not money is fair game)
