Currently heading to Capraia. 25 kts of wind
murmurat1on@reddit
Pop a reef in, you'll go faster and flatter
sola_mia@reddit
Real question: can you talk me through the basics of " popping a reef in" at this stage of the video? Point into the wind to accomplish? (Student here)
TheVoiceOfEurope@reddit
On a boat of this price point: just let out the main untill there is no more wind pressure, push the button to reduce the sail, sheet in the main, continue.
dijon0324@reddit
I haven’t been yet to do reef in these conditions, the main halyard is at the mast so I have to go forward. When I do, the main just won’t nudge down easily enough to get to the next reef point. I usually end up pointing up, throwing the engine on, and feeding upwind
TheVoiceOfEurope@reddit
I actually prefer reefing off the wind: less flapping and 50% of the time the sail is away from the winch and clutch.
Our sail is with sliders, the battens have chariots with bearings. So it slides up and down easily. Add some graphite / dry lubricant to tthe mast track?
Mehfisto666@reddit
Cruisers reef off the wind not into it. You just go a little from a run, drop the halyard a bit, pull the reef lines in a bit, and repeat until you are there. At least with slab reefing. It's MUCH easier and less dramatic than pointing into the wind.
If it's really late, then sometimes i like to heave-to and reef the main while doing that. Used to do that a lot on my old 28ft that didn't i had to go up the mast to operate the halyard

Appreciate everyone's comments here. I held my breath that I might berated for asking. TIL 🤗
brufleth@reddit
Interesting. This isn't how I've been taught to reef. I could see it working, but you'd be heading the wrong direction the whole time you're reefing and potentially still need to spin up wind because of the tension on the main sail cars preventing it from sliding down.
No-Sail-6510@reddit
The boom can push out pretty far. It will usually have basically no tension if you do this.
1aranzant@reddit (OP)
We had already taken 2 reefs on the main
Powerful_Bluebird347@reddit
Plus isn’t it hydraulic in boom furling? There aren’t even lines at the clue or hooks at the tack.
Ps she’s moving like a freight train
1aranzant@reddit (OP)
It is. But when you reef it’s better to have the horizontal reinforcements of the sail (not sure how you say in English) well inside the boom, so we don’t reef in between.
anteup@reddit
those are called "battens" sir :)
1aranzant@reddit (OP)
thx !
Powerful_Bluebird347@reddit
Makes total sense! There are reef reinforcement zones/panels so you go to each of those and not between.
nerdycarguy18@reddit
So I knew about all these things but never thought about putting a reef in a furling sail. Do you just furl it inward a little or?
Turbo__Sanwich@reddit
Yes.
No-Sail-6510@reddit
That sail trim is spot on. Idk what you’re talking about.
Much-Hamster-2182@reddit
Jep. Even those tellies tell so.
Dopey_Dope@reddit
There's already a reef in lol And it looks plenty stable in the video. Some heel is not your enemy, as long as the rudder feels good.
murmurat1on@reddit
Then put another one in?
More hull in water, more drag, less speed, less comfy
MSgtGunny@reddit
Depends on the boat actually. In some they are designed to heal over to increase the waterline, which makes them faster. See old J boats and older Americas Cup boats.

So much fun!

Why would the dodger cover a whole 0% of the forward seating?

Angry_Sparrow@reddit
Not enough hulls.
tribal_mouette@reddit
58' with a courtesy flag at the stern? Anyway, fair winds.
turkphot@reddit
Care to elaborate?
tribal_mouette@reddit
I was beeing picky and was referring to flag etiquette in sailing.
A courtesy flag is a small flag of the colours of the country you visit, hoisted on the spreaders.
Your own national flag is at the stern of your boat and is usually a bigger flag. Often 1 inch per foot of your hull. So with proper flag etiquette, the National ensign should be about 58" ( or 4'10" or 150cm).
Some people might find it a shame to sail a 58' beauty and spoil it with a tiny flag. If you are happen to see superyacht you'll find that they usually have a huge flag
The flag is a french flag and the french rarely care about flag etiquette. Maybe it's not in our culture as much as it is in other countries.
turkphot@reddit
Oh now i get it, you think the national is too small. Different strokes for different folks i guess and some nations are just more obsessed with flag etiquette than others.
turkphot@reddit
There is a flag below the starboard spreader, no?
Plastic_Table_8232@reddit
Knocking seamanship and lack of flag halyard on the mast / spreader.
If I had to choose between rigging a flag halyard and going sailing I’ll take the latter. I’ve also been known to sail without stowing my fenders after a run fueled evening at the dock.
fuc_boi@reddit
proper sailing
Sh0ckValu3@reddit
Get to the damn high-side you scallywags!
Bulky-Internal8579@reddit
That doesn’t look fun, it looks scary, good luck.
Euphoric-Tangelo-633@reddit
Huh, this is basically the chillest sailing possible
27onfire@reddit
Most people on reddit are scared to go out on their porch.
jfinkpottery@reddit
But this is /r/sailing. It's a little odd seeing someone here talk about a boat in medium wind being scary. And that boat a Swan 58 at that.
Conscious-Soil9055@reddit
Yeah, there are pirates in porches these days...
Delicious_Young9873@reddit
One of the best sail boats ever made. I grew up on our Swan 68. Amazing boats.
