Am I dying or just getting old?

Born in 83, and I swear I'm falling apart! Last December, I jumped up in excitement at the end of a Bears game (in the comfort of my own home) and ruptured my achilles. And it's not like I wasn't active before that...I was working out at least 4 or 5 days a week. And I swear, ever since then, something else has been hurting every day...the other calf, my chest, left back, right back, neck, shoulders, etc. And worst of all, in my head I'm still in my 20s...am I the only one or anyone else feeling their age these days?!
malibusoul@reddit
I threw my back out today bending over to pickup my cat. I’m 44. 😩😩😩
Chuecaslavaka@reddit
I strained my back picking up my cat too. Lower back - took weeks to improve, still not 100%. Cat complains every time she sees me because she’s starving. (She is 16 lbs)
malibusoul@reddit
Mine is 15 pounds and yes, he always wants to eat! Sigh.

Working out a few times a week in the gym doesn’t mean you are fit..

I threw my back out sneezing on the toilet a few weeks ago. So there's that.

I herniated my disc coughing too hard with the flu a couple months back. Then when I bent over to drink from the faucet I couldn't straighten back up for like an hour.
SpoonFullOfSugar1111@reddit
"Drink from the faucet" gives the old "drank from the hose generation" vibes... and I love that haha
curi0us_carniv0re@reddit
I had a similar thing happen to me. I was bending over the sink brushing my teeth and there was a pop in my lower back and then my legs just gave out. Then pain.
big_DINK_energy@reddit
The first time I threw my back out I was putting on my pants!🤦♀️ That was in 2018. I'm currently on through calender for my second medial branch block this month then getting an ablation. It's awesome. 🙄😒
maximilliontee@reddit
I gave myself tennis elbow shoveling snow. I’ve been babying my left arm for a couple of weeks to allow it to heal, otherwise my doctor says I may need physical therapy.
Caboobaroo@reddit
I threw out my back a couple months ago picking up sticks and leaves.... I walked around bent over for a few weeks. When people asked if I threw my back out, I'd reply "Nah, I just have a foot fetish"

Haha - are you me? Last year I pinched a nerve in my neck (which resulted in intense shoulder pain) getting up off of the toilet.
oblivious_nebula@reddit
Ouch! I know that pain. I did the same in my sleep. Just resting, dreaming and then BAM! Worst pain of my life. Lol
GlindaG@reddit
I threw my back out from washing a dish, because our dishwasher broke down. It took about 6 months to recover and I’m now terrified of moving the wrong way, triggering it again.
gdj11@reddit
Here’s the kicker. You’ll never recover all the way.
gdj11@reddit
I threw mine out standing in front of the bathroom mirror. Literally not doing anything.
MiniRems@reddit
My husband asked me a question as he walked into the living room the other night, and as I looked up to answer him, my neck spasmed. I spent the rest of the night alternating hot and cold between my husband trying to massage it and sucking down as much ibuprofen as my doctor recommended in the past for such things. If it hadn't faded to a dull nagging ache by morning I would have done a video appointment begging my doctors office for muscle relaxers.
cowgrly@reddit
Get the Advil Dual Action, it has Tylenol in it. Not (obviously) as much relief as a prescription, but way better than Advil alone. I’ve got inflammatory arthritis and my orthopedic surgeon told me this.
whitestrokes433@reddit
I threw mine out just standing up off the toilet. Woke my wife up with the sounds I was making. She thought I was jerking it before I went to work before she realized it was a pain sound, not a pleasure sound.
twobeeramir@reddit (OP)
I almost pulled a muscle laughing at this comment lol. Totally worth it!
Tylerdurden389@reddit
Threw out my back just from coughing about 2 weeks after turning the big 4-0.
AYearInOaxaca@reddit
Born in 84, leaned over to close a window two months ago and my calf muscle tore. I’m physically active, do calf lifts weekly. Cleveland Clinic, one of the few trustworthy online health sites, says this type of injury is common in “athletes or people over the age of 40.” Welcome to middle age, I guess.
Defiant-Variety-9473@reddit
Good chance you were overdoing the calf raises. Even if it was fairly light work, you need to take breaks the older you get
AYearInOaxaca@reddit
Possible! I’ve since switched trainers and have gone back to doing pilates reformer, which is generally less high impact
Defiant-Variety-9473@reddit
Nice. I'm older than you but found I really have to warm up before doing any type of running or other calf-heavy work. I now walk to the park where I work out and haven't strained my calf in several years until recently, only because it was cold out and/or was also not taking a break. The walking really helped.
As others have said, I did strain my Achilles tendon while taking antibiotics many years ago. Just another thing to watch out for
Indubitalist@reddit
Did they say why it happens, though? It seems to me like it had to be gradually tearing to be injured so badly by such a basic maneuver.
AYearInOaxaca@reddit
None at all. And I’ve known multiple people, always men, who have been doing activities as benign as simply walking down the beach who have experienced catastrophic tears to their Achilles tendon for absolutely no reason. It seems to just be the eventual decay of the body, I assume connected to the genetics and individual circumstances of each person.
My own injury wasn’t bad enough for me to go to rehab or see a specialist, so maybe someone with more specialized knowledge would have had a better diagnosis. I live in a part of Mexico where access to medical care is significantly better than in the U.S., so I texted my primary care doc in our town, an hour and a half later a sonogram tech met me at his office and did the imaging, and then the doc came in to read the results. No boot, no crutches, but two months of gradual recovery with no physical exercise beyond some very light walking. Took a long time!
saison257@reddit
I am 1982 and tore my calf muscle 9 years ago, so in my early 30s, and I was also actively doing leg strength exercises including calf raises and stretches. That injury is no joke. It took months in a boot and months of physical therapy after that. The doc told me if I had broken a bone it would have only taken 6 weeks. Fml.
Kellzy1212@reddit
I sprained an ankle so bad when i was 16, the doctor said it would’ve been better if it broke. That ankle has never 100% healed.
LozaMoza82@reddit
Ugh same, I was 15 playing soccer.
I’m 43 and that ankle is still more swollen than the other, and randomly gives out on occasion.
alett146@reddit
Same! I sprained the same ankle 3 times before the age of 20. Each time it was serious enough to be on crutches for weeks. I’m now 43. It has never been the same.
Yeebeegee@reddit
Same, so easy to injured yourself after 40 even when fit & healthy 😢 annoying af Seems like little minor injuries! I played tennis with my daughter and injured my hand never been the same even after physio.

Op did you recently take any powerful antibiotics? There is one that can weaken tendens where stuff like this happens.. any of the ones from this family
Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) Levofloxacin (Levaquin) Moxifloxacin (Avelox) Ofloxacin (Floxin)
Badkitty1127@reddit
Ciproflaxin made me very, very sick. It’s way too hard on the body & has NASTY side effects.
Defiant-Variety-9473@reddit

Defiant-Variety-9473@reddit
My question too. Had it happen
trippingbilly0304@reddit
Came here to post this.

battlestargirlactica@reddit
Cipro did me in, back in 2015. I was given it for part of a heavy hitting HPylori multi-med treatment. I had a yet-to be diagnosed connective tissue disorder and shouldn’t have been given it. It kicked off an avalanche of symptoms, including spontaneous tendon rupture & ligament tears, and much more. My body has aged decades in just one.
trippingbilly0304@reddit
I can relate, unfortunately.
Hope youve found a way to adjust and manage.
bradbossack@reddit
Yikes. Right, more modern standardized chemicals that end up being a nightmare.
Chuecaslavaka@reddit
This! If someone is hyper mobile or has a connective tissue disorder, you really want to be mindful of these drugs.
Indubitalist@reddit
Damn, as someone who may be getting prescribed this in a little over a week, this is certainly good to know. I don’t suppose you know of any equally effective treatment that doesn’t involve these nasty ones?
GoodMourning81@reddit
Talk to your doctor about your concerns. They are valid as this class of antibiotics are horrible.
Defiant-Variety-9473@reddit
Are you taking antibiotics by chance?
Zandroid2008@reddit
My dad ruptured his Achilles just playing soccer in the yard with us at age 41. Then the next year went over his handlebars on a bike ride and broke his wrist so badly it required three surgeries to fix correctly.

You didn't happen to be on an antibiotic called Ciprofloxacin in the last 6 months did you?
purkeyt83@reddit
Last March I had a valve in my heart replaced, a month after that I suffered cardiac arrest and did die at 41. Spent 4 days in a medically induced coma, a week in the ICU after that, and had to have a pacemaker put in. Still here though so I guess it's just getting old.

redhandrail@reddit
Except that you can raaaapidly make things worse if you mess up even a little too wrong. I get what you’re saying. I do. But if you have a job or kids or other hobby that would be affected very negatively if you hurt yourself, it’s not an easy decision. I tried to start skating again a few years ago. Too much fear now. It sucks
squirrels-mock-me@reddit
At a certain age “skate or die!” becomes “skate and die!”. Still go for it though with certain precautions

qcthunder@reddit
This will sound like a conspiracy theory, but I never knew about it until last July when it happened to me. Did you by any chance take ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin or moxifloxacin for an infection last year?
Achilles tendon rupture (and worse) is a major side effect... and there are many if that medication is toxic to you. They call it "being floxed."
Apologies if this breaks any rules here.

Happened to my mom.
SnoozuRN@reddit
Nurse here and I can confirm. Our providers try not to prescribe it for this reason.
dude22blue@reddit
You work out but did you stretch? How's your posture? Everything is connected, you might eat right but never move, you might work out but not eat well. You might work out and eat ok but never stretch. As we get older all the systems need to be looked at. I've started stretching more and trying to correct my rounded shoulders before I get into my 40 because if I don't I know it'll get harder and become more of a hump back later in life. Does it suck do I look dumb does it hurt, yes. Also working on my flat feet so I can get better biomechnics for later.
You don't have to do any of it but that's usually the thing, if you don't do maintenance one day something we'll stop working. It's like house or car maintenance, sometimes you just need to clean and tidy up other times you need to change your fluids sometimes you need to take care of the foundation.
Oh not, we're all going to die just enjoy the ride.
TheAnarchyChicken@reddit
My husband is 55 and literally just broke a rib… rolling over in bed.
blazingintensity@reddit
I was feeling like that for a while, but I started going to the gym back in December and most of my "i slept wrong" aches and pains have gone away. But I'm very sedentary, so just the daily trip to the gym is a significant improvement over the absolute fuck all I was doing before. Mostly now I'm just dealing with circulatory bullshit like high blood pressure and cholesterol.
jtmonkey@reddit
Man. When you hit 40 you HAVE to take it easy. You gotta hit strength training a couple of times a week. You HAVE to go for walks if you’re not active. You got to get you colon checked sometime in the next 5 years. 40s are such a weird time because you’re mentally 25 but you’re physically not. Your 20 year old self wore you out.
resourcefultamale@reddit
Humblebrag1987@reddit
Yoga and cardio. Working out most often means lifting weights in the gym.
If I do 2 hrs yoga and 2 hrs cardio in a week, 90% of my pain goes away.
I wake up fucked up in my neck and upper back a few times a week and it's not age or my body. It's desk time and stress.
twobeeramir@reddit (OP)
I think you're right about the desk time and stress! I work from home and basically in front of the computer 8 hours a day. One of the positives of my recovery is that I'm now forced to get up every 30 or 40 minutes to walk around the house, which has really helped, and I've put my laptop at eye level. Once I'm back to normal, I plan on getting back to my cardio and will definitely look into yoga!

All I can say is eat right, see the Dr., take your meds and get as much weight off as possible
SnoozuRN@reddit
I had a patient the other day that got rid of all his psoriatic arthritis symptoms by eating a carnivore diet.
Majestic-Active2020@reddit
Everyone is different. The carnivore diet may work for a couple reasons. One of them is what did they remove. If they were eating like crap, or eating a lot of refined sugars…. Removing those known inflammatory foods could have done it.
But again, everyone is different.

I almost asked how you dislocated your jaw but then realized that literally last week my doctor told me my jaw subluxes so never mind.
Also that was quite rude of your shoulder and jaw. That coffee was important.
plonkydonkey@reddit
Thank you! The indignity of dealing with a dislocated jaw without having had my first coffee for the day really made it much harder to bare.
And ya, be careful with subluxing jaws. I guess the benefit is it hurts for us less than non-hypermobile folk to pop it back into place, but we have to be careful with yawning and pretty much... Everything now. It's a very weird feeling not being able to close your mouth. Also very drooly lol

apoplectic-confetti@reddit
Yeah, after I turned 40, I had to start doing yoga everyday to keep my back from seizing up randomly. I also get massages regularly, which has made a difference.
phoenix0r@reddit
Seconding those massages after 40. Life changing!
EvilCeleryStick@reddit
I've been going twice a month. It's helping but sometimes I feel like maybe it isn't enough. How often do you go?
kateastrophic@reddit
Massage therapist here— obviously, I agree with the massage recs. It can’t replace exercise, though. Together, they are a great combo. Twice a month should have you feeling pretty good. If not, you may get want to shop around for a different therapist. Maybe see two different therapists once a month each? We all have different strengths. Also, I highly recommend looking for a massage therapist who specializes in “structural integration.” It’s more about postural alignment and less about relaxation.
Furrymcfurface@reddit
Is structural integration aka rolfing?
kateastrophic@reddit
Yes! Rolfing is the original form of structural integration. Now it is a modality with multiple variations, but all with a similar intent to Rolfing.
Furrymcfurface@reddit
I was impressed, after I did the 10 sessions of rolfing. My back didn't hurt for almost 2 years.
Do you have favorite sources to learn structural integration?
IvenaDarcy@reddit
I get a massage almost every week. I notice the amount of tension my body stores and how quickly I get tightness (mostly in my neck and shoulders) when I go too long. When life is nice and stress free I can get away with twice a month but when things get heavy I return to once a week so even if my mind is on overload my body feels great.
smrtgmp716@reddit
I’m a 45yo massage therapist.
I had a string of injuries between 22-30 that lead to 3 knee surgeries, a back surgery, and endless pain.
I literally went to massage school to get a massage a day for 9 months.
Turned out I had a gift for it, and got my body back in the process of picking up a trade I love.

Have you tried Pilates instead of yoga? I have hyper-mobile joints and whenever I tried yoga, I would end up hurting myself (I guess I was already very flexible and yoga just made it worse). Haven't had that problem yet with Pilates.
siobhanenator@reddit

I used to have chronic low back pain. The best remedy I found was not sitting all day, which is hard to do because of work.
I found, just like you, that some sort of daily exercise regimen helped wonders. Additionally when things got awful and I couldn’t walk, sneeze, cough, go #2, or get up without pain shooting down my leg that chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture combined, were the quickest ways to get relief.
That said, now with daily exercise, there’s no pain.
Glad you found relief.
skitch23@reddit
What kind of yoga? I can hardly sit up straight right now lol
Quiet_Writer_206@reddit
I personally suck at self motivating to do yoga at home, but I do think the above-mentioned video yoga classes are good recommendations. However, I personally would recommend checking out a yoga studio near where you live, if possible.
Start with a Yin or Hatha yoga class - those classes are meant to be slow stretch classes that focus on doing the pose correctly rather than fast and the teacher will give lots of modifications to fit how your body is feeling that day. The teachers will also help with prop suggestions like blocks and blankets when needed so that you don't hurt yourself.
EyePeaEh@reddit
Yoga with Adrienne + beginner and just pick what you’d like to focus on from the results. She has multiple videos with different lengths too, so you can choose the shorter ones to start out with. Everything in your body is linked, so working one or two parts might help you overall with sitting up straight or eventually touching your toes! Good luck!

EyePeaEh@reddit
I honestly couldn’t either until recently, and it really is life altering! I went from a very sedentary life to over 270 days of yoga in 2025, and it’s made getting older way more manageable day-to-day.
That sounds awful, and I’m sorry to hear that. I hope you can find some that you enjoy and start to feel a difference. Here is a short one for lower back, and maybe one for upper back too. Eventually, you can find what helps you best and will find yourself incorporating some of the movements during a quick pause from work or watching tv. Best of luck to you!

Inquisitive_Owl2345@reddit
Yeah, yoga is really dangerous if there is a history of hypermobility or any connective tissue disorder. People swear by it, but flexibility without stability is not good in the long run. Yoga can be part of a healthy routine provided that the body tolerates it, but many people tend to venerate it as a near total wellness solution which it most certainly isn't, and it should always be approached with caution with injuries or any hypermobility present.

I'm 65. Every year I get older, something breaks or hurts more than the day before. My body is out right yelling at me. You are breaking down. I don't even want to bring up the topic of affording to retire. Health insurance! 'Murica! About 6 years ago, I told my 2 daughters I have an expiration date. I do not want to live past 78. If I do? Don't be surprised what happens next. I'm sure there are plenty of spry, sassy people who think they are viable. Good for you. I'm not in any of those clubs. And to answer your question. I don’t know what it is about turning 40, but once I did I really started feeling my age. I went from 20/20 vision my whole life to owning two pairs of reading glasses. I used to be able to slam a case of beer and sleep for 12 hours, but now I drink nothing and get up in the middle of the night and pee at least once. My knees hurt, my back hurts, I can’t see shit, and I’m starting yo understand why old people yell at kids to get off their lawn!
No-Count3834@reddit
Born in late 82 and my optometrist had the eye glasses talk with me last year already lol. Told me I should consider them in 5 years, and it’s pretty normal. At 40+ everyone should invest in the best bed they can. Same with sleep as well, and waking up 2 times a night or just getting 5 1/2 to 6hrs on a work day. I just make up extra sleep on weekends or a slow work day lunch sometimes. I cut all caffeine for a year now and went down the supplement rabbit hole.
shagy815@reddit
I had 20/10 vision most of my life, at 43 it started deteriorating. I am not happy about it.

Close to your age the only thing ive really noticed since 35 is injuries take longer to recover from. But I have a low bar i basically didnt do cardio from 25 til my early 30s (and never ran) then I started running. Always lifted weights which I attribute to not having back problems.
I think around 40 is where things can fall apart if theres holes in your game. I've never understood people saying "im 30 now so im out of breath after going up a flight of stairs", thats got nothing to do with age lol.

Yeah I knew people who started to get "old" in their 20s or 30s and like...you started sitting around all day and you eat/drink too much.
No-Count3834@reddit
It’s pretty common by 42 or so to not feel great, unless you eat good, at least do yoga or some cardio. I don’t even drink caffeine anymore, spicy foods and alcohol is very limited. Mostly because I will sleep like crap, could get a stomach ache…my body grew sensitive over time to all that stuff. If I want to feel like my late 20s/30s, I have to put in the work and keep it up.
To me a good day is 8hrs of sleep, some stretching, good meals and a relaxed day. In my 20s/early 30s, I could sleep anytime for 8-14 hrs on command. Now I have to cut out foods, and push exercise higher up the list to have sleep stability closer I got to 41/42 I’d say.

41/42 hit me like a freight train. The way I treated my body in 20's and 30's makes me think of that movie the Substance. I was writing a lot of checks my body is now cashing. Can no longer enjoy chocolate, coffee, added sugar, or alcohol without immediate consequences. Have precancerous keratosis on nose and ears. Joints crack if I take a big breath. Not great, but I never expected to live past 30 so I try not to complain.

Jan 83 here. Metaphorically, we are all dying…. But I’ll be the one to say it. I do CrossFit and feel great. At this age, you have to actively fight back hard, if you want to stay mobile without pain.
Regular exercise and targeted recovery stretching afterward. Only stretch while skin is dewey from sweat. Think bubble gum in the refrigerator versus warmed up... That's your muscles.
Lately I found that stretching with weights really helps get my brain out of the way of the movement, like when you sit Indian meditative style and put light weights on the inside of your knees, for example.

Whiskey_Water@reddit
There is a theory that there are two years of life where the body ages faster than the rest: 44 (or mid forties) and around sixty. The concept is that aging isn’t linear, and changes in different cellular/molecular classes, as well as gut biome and immunity, have two sharp peaks in the course of an average lifetime.

Immorpher@reddit
'83 as well! I don't know how I survived. I am feeling alright, but I probably shouldn't? Sorry for the big post; I didn't realize I had so much to say when I started haha.
Grew up mostly on doritos and mountain dew. Backyard wrestled for 10 years against guys bigger than me. A lot of getting slammed, jumping off sheds, getting hit with random objects until my ears rang.
I have had my own share of injuries too. Broke my right arm when I was little, so I am left handed now. Got hit on the head hard enough by a baseball bat that it you could feel a hole in my head (turns out internal bleeding caused the bone to go soft). I popped a rib in jiu jitsu. Then last year a car accident caused multiple injuries... broken ankle, bone chips in my wrists, and a concussion on top!
Maybe it's my troll-like Finnish genetics that helped a bit? But both my parents had back issues by my age, so I have always been careful to keep my posture good. My family has a BIG history of depression, so I worked hard getting creative hobbies (musician / game modder), and getting into a profession I love that challenges me (science). So although I have felt that depression, it never became enough where I had to be medicated. I seen how people at my last job got carpal tunnel from setting up so much glassware, so I moved onto my current job which has a lot of variety, where I am walking a bit, office work a bit, fixing things a bit, teaching a bit, networking a bit, and that's every day. Also I made sure to get a vertical mouse (but at home I have a normal mouse).
Although my diet in my teens sucked, it's better now. I believe I only have one life to live, so I eat a big variety of foods, from many cultures, and mostly cook at home. When I am out I try to order the weirdest thing on the menu and go to ethnic restaurants. Nutrition is such a confusing science, but I believe having a variety is the best way to go to get your body what it needs. Now I am overweight by general standards for an average sized guy, but I am not over 200 lbs. I have been cutting out processed food and replacing them with fruits though. But I wouldn't be surprised if deficiencies in diet, due to picky eating, results in rapid aging of certain systems.
I do not go to the gym; my mind just protests the entire time with repetitive tasks. So coming from backyard wrestling, I did do jiu jitsu after a while. But due to injuries, moving, and covid, I don't do that anymore. Fortunately my work keeps me moving for at least half of the day every day. And I do know I need exercise, so I try to get some of that with yard work. I live next to a forest on a hill with frequent storms, so I get to throw a lot of (sometimes big) branches over fences during the year. So although its not gym work, I do try to keep active during work, and atleast break a sweat during the weekends. Could probably be doing more though!
I do have some minor persistent issues. During my teens due to school work and video games, my eyes got shot. But since then they haven't changed much at all, I am at a -5 prescription. I have always had persistent allergies, perhaps even a small amount of autoimmune disorder. It got the worst in my late 20's where it was like having the flu. But now none of that happens; I still sneeze like 6 times a day though. My ankle hasn't fully healed yet, I am at like 95% to where I was, and it is getting better everyday. Also I am not on any medications, which apparently is uncommon at my age at least according to the doctors who looked after me when I was recovering from the car accident.
Is the aging wall coming for me? Probably. If I remember, I will let y'all know when that happens haha. I am hoping though my preventative measures will ease its onset.

Are you getting leafy greens, natural sources of fiber, avoiding processed meats (bacon/salami), 3-4 fruits/veggies a day, complex carbohydrates like beans/sweet potatos) Or is your diet rich in simple carbs like processed breads/pastas/cereals. Do you eat fish 2x a week if have an adequate intake of Omega 3?
I had fatigue and headaches and joint pain (bursitis/arthritis) and did an elimination diet and nutrient testing. Once you hit your 40s, your body naturally is less good at nutrient absorption so you really have to pay attention to make sure that your food is nutritious. That and so much in our diet can cause inflammation.
When you say “every day something is hurting” I think of a few things: - possible potassium or magnesium deficiency, this can make muscles feels sore - joints - inflammation in the body (highly processed foods, lack of nutrients and foods that fight inflammation like fish/greens)
There’s so much more to dig into but feeling good and alive at our age can be helped by treating nutrition like what is feeding the machine.
Born in 83 you’re only 43, you can absolutely feel great at this age. But what we used to do doesn’t cut the mustard.
I’m 48 and just dialed in my nutrition in the last year. No more joint pain no more headaches. I did functional testing and worked with a nutritionist. It was hard at first we did a 3 month elimination diet (sugar, dairy, gluten, alcohol) but it was a game changer. I’ve just started doing higher impact exercise again - I have the energy for it and my joints don’t ache
ViseLord@reddit
I turned 44 and everything stopped healing and or working.
Tweak a knee before that? 2-3 days and I've already forgotten about it. Now? It's a serious condition that needs to be planned around and potentially a Dr visit scheduled for.
Why cant I ever get that last dribble of piss out?
Suddenly, the importance of consuming the proper amount of fiber daily is all too clear.
By this time of year, in my 30's, I would have already dropped 10lbs of "winter weight" by doing spring yard work. Now I can only do 75% of the work and am somehow gaining weight?
AUCE05@reddit
Psoriatic arthritis hit me at 22. You have no idea what pain is. Getting g old is a breeze to this shit.
blondeviking64@reddit
Kind of. I played soccer (vs 25 year olds...i domt really keep up but i try) and after I was sore. Not muscle sore though. My hips, knees, and ankles ALL hurt after the game. In fact, its been since Sunday and today they still hurt. Not muscle sore. Joint sore. That is getting old roght there.

Reading these comments I feel a bit nervous because somehow I don’t have any aches and pains at all. My body doesn’t feel any different than it did when I was in my 20s. Is the bottom about to fall out? lol. I do walk long distances every day and have done so for years. I don’t know if that’s what has helped me but I want to keep this going as long as possible!
winteraeon@reddit
I used to walk a lot. I was a full time pedestrian averaging 21-28 miles a week just walking to commute around back in 2017-2018. I was invincible feeling back then for sure. I swim now, don’t walk much, but I’m als not suffering.
scattershotdreams@reddit
I feel better than I have in years between vitamin deficiences being corrected and yoga sorting out some other physical issues.
wafflespuppy@reddit
I'm a year older, and have walked for a living for the last 8 years and I'm always in pain. My left foot is buggered, knees and hips randomly hurt and make me limp. Lower back aches often. But then I'm walking with dogs, lots of bending, lifting, twisting and pulling so more wear and tear and I've got an autoimmune condition so that probably doesn't help I guess 🥴 I am jealous but long may you continue to be pain free!
Plus-Pomegranate8045@reddit
Thanks! I’m sorry you have those pains. My mom started getting joint/back problems and arthritis pretty young, and has had 4 joint replacements to date, so I’m surprised I’m holding up this well. Trying to ride it out as long as I can.

winteraeon@reddit
Am I the only one NOT falling apart? Also born in 83 here. Worst I’ve had is a period where if I stretched my leg out at night in bed I’d suddenly get this awful calf cramp. But that hasn’t happened in a while now. Sometimes my calves get painfully tight from walking for a while but if I sit and let them relax I’m fine for the rest of the day. My biggest health issue is asthma, obviously not age related but I got it later in life.

I little over a year ago I started walking everyday. I average about 3 miles a day which is better than the 0 miles a day I used to average. Went in for a check up today and for the first time ever, I have high blood pressure. I started walking for my freaking heart health.

I have weak knees. I started walking first to build strength, then started running. When I was running regularly last year, I injured myself a lot less. Less back pain, less knee pain.

I'm also '83. I'm super active - about 2 hours a day, but one of those hours is active warm up, cool down, and recovery. Otherwise, I'm likely to wake up unable to turn my head and have to keep a standing appointment with physical therapy.

I was talking on the phone with my mother and decided to put on a cardigan. I jacked up my shoulder while putting on a damn sweater. Felt something in the joint scream at me. I'm still trying to figure out WTAF I screwed up. Had an x-ray, went to PT. Had to buy front close bras because putting on and taking off regular ones is really difficult now.
I have a theory that once you hit 30 your body starts to fall apart in five year incriments. Next year I turn 50 and I just know my arm is going to fall off of my body or something.
squee_bastard@reddit
Look up frozen shoulder, it’s a fun little body experiment that rears its ugly head as our estrogen declines with age. Yay!
Forsythia77@reddit
So the symptoms literally sound like what is going on. Ugh. But at least I can follow up with my doctor and get a solid treatment plan going.
squee_bastard@reddit
This happened to my friend last year and it got so bad that her husband had to put her bra on and help her get dressed. She ended up getting injections of some sort to help but is now considering surgery.
Forsythia77@reddit
Oof. I don't think my cats can help with my bras. Got no husband. 😱🤣. I did six weeks of PT and that definitely helped. I should be more diligent about doing the exercises. It's the pain at night that's the worst though. Like ma'am, can you stop throbbing, I'm trying to sleep. I'm already not a good sleeper due to perimenopause.

Research from Stanford has shown that we age in bursts, once in our mid 40s and again in our early 60s. Anecdotally, I have noticed this, both personally and socially (you being the latest to validate the idea). So I think you’re right on time with the rest of us, and I hope it brings you some peace to know you’re not alone.
twobeeramir@reddit (OP)
It actually does, thank you...because on top of everything, the anxiety of the unknown makes things even worse. And that anxiety is a whole different beast that can really have a physical impact on the body, especially when it affects out sleep. I think since I haven't been able to sleep through the night at all (due to having to sleep in a boot) my body has also started feeling everything.

20 years ago I tore my ACL and had it fixed. I still feel it every day. I had a bike wreck 15 years ago that I still feel in my hip when I walk. Basically, I now live life like any injury I have will affect me for the rest of my life.

Most of the pain describing could be related to the Achilles rupture. If you have been walking with a different gate because of the injury, you have been twisting your back neck and shoulders to compensate for the injury.
By chance, were you on any antibiotics prior to the injury?
twobeeramir@reddit (OP)
I was not actually...I read someone else's comment about that as well. I honestly think it was a freak accident and a matter of wearing bad shoes. I was wearing Converse Chuck Taylor high tops, which I clearly had no business trying to be "cool" at my age lol

It’s possible you could have some sort of chronic disorder. About 3 years ago I stopped being active after an injury and then suddenly my whole body was hurting. Turned out it wasn’t just normal aging wear and tear and I have a muscular/ nervous system disorder.

Have you been treated with antibiotics in the last year? Fluoroquinolones are tied to tendon rupture, ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin etc.
Silentlaughter84@reddit
84 born here and I won't even chase a bus because the last time I did that, I ended up belly flopping and fractured a rib. Surprisingly, that didn't hurt as much as when it did when I hit my tailbone on the ground.
MadlyToxic@reddit
You sound just like my spouse who is your age. He’s always been pretty fit, running and lifting weights. Not overweight. Memorial Day 2024 he raced our teenage son in a sprint. Boom, ruptured Achilles. He didn’t do surgery but he did PT with protracted recovery. Late last year he started having shoulder pain of unknown origin— boom torn labrum. Had a couple cortisone shots and PT which did help. His shoulder did get better after a few months. He also has intermittent GI issues— he’s had appendicitis, esophagitis, got an endoscopy and they discovered a hiatal hernia, so he has to be a lot more careful with his diet.
I’m two years younger, and I do feel stiffness in the mornings that I assume is the beginning of arthritis, and perimenopause symptoms. It sucks getting old, but there are positives too, like being wiser, being better at managing our life, getting better at coping with stress, watching our kids grow up. Hang in there and try to focus on the good things, and definitely invest in self care.

BigDaddyUKW@reddit
You're in your 40's. This is all normal. I used to be able to bench (max) well over 300 lbs in my 20's. Now my workout schedule (4-5 days a week) is mostly cardio, with circuit training, yoga, and core workouts sprinkled in. Setbacks are common, and skipping a body part due to nagging pain is normal. Oh, and as a father of an only child who is 7, I coach sports and play with him constantly because I'm the de facto older brother. Just keep fighting the good fight my friend!

In my thirties I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Everything that hurt was blamed on that for years. I was in physical therapy for si joint dysfunction and the therapist mentioned I was hyper mobile. sailphish@reddit
Yep.
There is data that people don’t necessarily age in a linear fashion, but instead there are big changes around 40 and 65. Early 40s hit me hard. Hitting the gym, losing weight, cutting alcohol, eating better all helped. IMHO, focusing on mobility training, which is functional strength, is a big benefit.

For real though, we're at that age, and the biggest problem is it takes years and decades for poor form and posture to get to the point where your body can no longer compensate. Tom Morrison on YouTube had helped me quite a bit with shoulders. Maybe give that a look?

If you aren’t doing mobility focused work 2-3 days a week you should be. Hip cars, shoulder cars, neck cars, sundials, cat/cow variations, wall slides, etc. If you’re lifting make sure you are doing functional work as well like: farmer walks, dead hangs, kettlebell work like swings and get ups, wife leg squat sits, Asian squats, etc. Working stuff like this into your routine will make you more resilient to injury especially as you get older. Goes a long way.

I’ve become a yoga instructor for fun and teach once a week in my local community. It allows me to set up classes for myself as well. Stretching and yoga (with some meditation) is life! I also used to do taekwondo, that helps with a major element we lose as we get old: Balance. I need to add something for improving muscle mass and I m good for a little while.
Dramatic-Box-6847@reddit
It could go past the body - our mind influences our body tremendously, so letting go of stuff in our mind can heal the body as well.
HoneyBadger302@reddit
I'm a woman, so YMMV, and not everyone can do the same things, but I was pretty sure life as I knew it was over, no matter how hard I was willing to try, or how much work I was willing to put in, the pain was unbearable, the exhaustion, the aches, you name it...
Then I finally got my hormones balanced (which, in my case, it was my testosterone that had completely tanked on me, probably had been decreasing for some time...and yes, women very much have it and need it), and ever since starting to get that back into the "normal" range, I've felt like - well, ME again.
Which has led to more and higher quality activity, which is bringing my blood pressure down (despite some high stress situations right now), many of my niggling aches and pains completely subsiding (not my old injuries or things of that nature, but even those recover and are better managed), better sleep (which helps everything), better eating, combined with the activity means losing some very stubborn weight...the list goes on.
Not everyone can go the route of HRT, but it's been huge for me at least. Just one person and one case, but very, VERY thankful the option exists because it's literally been life altering.

I’m a 44 yo male and 5 years ago, I felt the same way. Everything hurt, it was hard to bend over, my lower back had a huge knot that refused to release for what seemed like years, and overall, I was a huge mess physically even though I worked out.
Then I started doing yoga. I found an intro style class on YouTube and couple of days into it, the knot in my back magically released while doing some cat/cows. From that day on I was sold. I now do studio classes 2-3 times a week and I can honestly say, I probably feel better now than I ever have in my entire adult life.

Just turned 40. Had one hip replacement 5 weeks ago and scheduling the other hip in a few months after this one heals. Pelvic tilt and back surgery to follow.
Source: I did a lot of sports and Xtreme sports as a kid up through my late twenties. The young adrenaline made me believe I was fine and it was just bruises. I'm talking about back country snowboarding, snowmobiling, mountain biking, longboarding etc...i took bad spills on all of them doing massive jumps.
The worst part is I would complain about back pain, got numerous X-rays, and was told that I have random compressed discs. When I moved to Europe from the US and got free universal healthcare I started going to see all the specialists instead my local doctor in the US. My specialist said I have the worst hips (shattered) that he has ever seen. He is the leading surgeon in my new country and asked if he can use my X-rays in his lectures at the local university. He was genuinely surprised I could walk at all even with a cane.
All that being said the new hip is life changing, and I can't wait for the other one to be done. So there is hope for all us!

‘83 here, almost two years ago three arteries in my neck suddenly decided they were tired of sending blood to my brain in a normal manner and tore internally. Almost killed me! Oh hi there fellow random artery explosion person! I was born in '77 and two years my carotid artery decided to dissect on me randomly. It's definitely a challenge to not think about it all the time though, as I reeeeaaally don't want it to happen again. I still have some anisocoria, but I just call it my witchy eye now🤣.
Glad you healed up!
Apprehensive_Map64@reddit
I've always been relatively fit going in cycles of a few years at a time. I've pretty much leveled off maintaining muscle and not adding fat but it seems I haven't been maintaining the muscle as much as I had thought. I used my electric mower to chew up an overgrown near vertical 2m high section at the end of my yard and my arm hurt for almost a week. In my 20's I would hurt for a day, in my 30's I accepted that I then needed two days to recover. Now at 44 it seems three days isn't even enough.

Ruptured Achilles sounds horrible! And you were active? God damn. So sorry. Hope it healed fast.
I don’t go to the gym but I’m a decade older than you and so far so good. My advice is get on the floor at least once a day if not more. I eat off my coffee table and just lounge on floor pillows a lot so that keeps me up and down most the day. Don’t be that older person who can’t get on and off the floor easily! Use it or lose it.
For me that’s main one but I also get in my daily steps and ride my bike. I need to start jumping rope or something like that to hop because I heard hopping / jumping is important as we age. I guess I live blocks from the park so could just go hop around there but might look cray cray but who I cares I suppose. It’s NYC no one will pay me any mind that’s for sure lol

‘83 baby as well. A couple months before my 40th I went into AFib (spontaneous, persistent). A couple weeks after my birthday I was cardioverted and have been mostly okay heart-wise since. Discounting the damage the military did to me, for the last 3 years it feels like there is always something new hurting or some new concern.
I think some of it is somatic because we’re living in the worst timeline but also physiologically I think mid-40s is a major shift in humans and we are hitting that phase.

I studied massage - which involves a lot of anotomy and physiology - and it makes perfect sense that you're experiencing a full-body knock on effect from this Achilles injury. Our body structure and stability often works from the bottom up (feet > head). If something is unbalanced or compromised in the foundation of our posture (feet, toes, lower legs, knees) then it's going to cause other parts of your body to rebalance or compensate as a result.
If you have resources, it's well worth getting support and guidance from a remedial massage therapist or a physical therapist to help bring things back into balance. If you don't have resources, you might be able to self-help your way out of it via YouTube, etc.
Importantly, excess stress about this and feeling like parts of your body are a threat or liability is going to work against your goals, and may cause you to feel helpless rather than empowered (glass half empty vs half full).

I went to my optometrist after turning 45 for a checkup. I have never needed glasses and always had excellent vision. I actually had a few issues and was basically told I was fucked and that it is all downhill from here. Eyes quit healing in the 40s and you will need to start looking at glasses in a few years. Good luck with that.
Now I wear readers and actually need them. Fuck.
guyincognito121@reddit
Also 45, but I've needed glasses or contacts since I was 10 or so. Got my annual checkup a couple months ago and was told that I'm showing the first signs of presbyopia. My optometrist told me to hold off on getting reading glasses for as long as I feel like I practically can. Once you start using them, you stop exercising the muscles that help you focus on near objects, and that accelerates the process of degrading you near vision. He said at the very least, go with a weaker lens than what makes you feel perfectly comfortable so that those muscles are still getting some work.

Did you play sports in your teens or twenties? People in their 40s that have these problems played sports and those injuries are coming home to roost.
BingErrDronePilot@reddit
Born in '80. I'm an old Dad. Running with my kid to catch the bus last September. Right after my sciatica started hurting. Then my back, then my leg, then my foot. Pretty soon I had a permanent numb spot on the bottom of my foot. Pain everyday in my back and leg and felt like I was walking in a rock for months. Saw a doctor and PT and no relief. Finally started seeing a chiropractor and after about 5 sessions was feeling mildly better but then he recommended insoles off of Amazon. Wore them for a week and felt a lot better. A month later all the pain was gone.
We are getting to the place where a short sprint debilitates us, but the right pair of shoes is like heaven. It's sad but the human body doesn't last forever. I'm taking this to heart now and eating less and losing weight. Eating more veggies and fiber and less processed foods. Just use every injury as a wake up call.

47 here. 8ish years ago I went roller blading with my kids for the first time in a long time. The day after my lower back was fucked up. Never had back problems a day in my life until then. I proceeded to have lower back problems for the next few years until I started working out regularly and lost a bunch of weight. No more back problems, but I still have to be careful. Strained my hamstring doing leg curls at the gym, which prevented me from running for 6 weeks, and then a very slow and deliberate return to running. right when I was training to attempt my first marathon. Had to cancel it.
We break easier, and take longer to heal when we do. We need to stay active, but avoid doing more than our body is CURRENTLY capable of, NOT what is USED to be capable of.

Yup, turned 40 amd everything hurts, on top of being female, which already blows goats, I hate being a mid life woman. Thinning hair, teeth drifting, too skinny, something people used tp compliment me on but now I'm just this weird skinny old lady amd all it took was like 3-5 years. I'm active, healthy, steady career, male killer money, own my own home but still feel so inadequate constantly. People treat me differently, it sucks. Now I have a fucking carunkle cyst, which I've never had any health problems before. I'm so fucling over it all. Like why am I even doing all this? I just get more useless by societies standards every day.

‘78 here. Ruptured my plantar fascia during a hike summer of 2024. Had to hobble a mile and a half back to the car on it.
I had to rent a wheelchair to go on a long-planned cruise November 2025. It made me realize how much I had become a shutin from an inability to walk, so I bought one when I got back.
It’s still not all better … but
A. In hindsight I had misinterpreted signs in the months prior to the injury and reacted by exercising harder, which backfired
B. It turned out my autoimmune disorder was out of control. If something else is keeping your entire body inflamed, you won’t heal.
It had really never occurred to me my gastrointestinal disorder was hurting my foot.
3 months of infusions to reduce inflammation and I’m finally healing. I would have struggled making it to the infusions without the wheelchair, and I wouldn’t have begun healing without the infusions.
I went on a school tour for my niece yesterday without the wheelchair. It was the most steps I’ve walked in months and I’m only a little sore today.
If you’re not healing get a doc to run some labs to check stuff. My CRP and sed rate were the highest they’ve been in 20 years, and it was the podiatrist who suggested I get cleared by my gastro, when I had been solely focused on making the stupid foot work.

'80 here, when I turned 40 everything started going to shit.
Hysterectomy at 42 threw me right into menopause (kept my ovaries but they packed up and jumped ship), ended up with glasses full time for the first time in my life at 44, and most recently tore a tendon in my elbow because our 1 yr old dog doesn't know how to walk on a leash, and every walk is like she's a sled dog pulling a full load 🥴 still recovering from that six months post PRP injection and PT.
I for sure thought my knees would shit the bed first since I was diagnosed with patellar tendinitis at 15 yrs old because I was growing too fast 😂 but it seems as though the joints above my waist are suffering worse right now.

My right shoulder is has been kind of achy for the past year. I think overdoing by “ego lifting” with chest presses and shoulder presses has caused chronic bursitis. It has been gradually getting better the past few months now that I keep the weight lower and focus on form, no range of motion impacts, but there were days last year where it was an intense dull pain every so often.
Other than that, I feel fine. I just have to make sure I stretch every night and get up and walk around the office during the day.
