Pulling the trigger on the Lectric XP4 today. Talk me into (or out of?) the 750W. I still can’t decide.

I made a post a few days ago that was a little more general in scope and I received some helpful responses which I am grateful for. Since then, I visited my local bike shop and asked them a ton of questions, in addition to test riding 2 ebikes: the 750W XP4 and a Velotric Tempo. While I did have a lot of fun on the Tempo, I'm going to have to stick with the XP4 due to reasons (but I'm fine with it, it's a good budget bike). Anyway, there's only one choice I still have to make: 750W or 500W. The 750W is $300 more and at the very top of my budget so that's why I want to be sure of this decision.
My needs:
* Commute to work 4 miles each way (8 miles total) 3 days per week, haul groceries occasionally from one of the 2 stores 1.5 miles away, occasionally longer trips. I don't have a car at the moment, although I do have access to a car I can borrow from time to time, so it's definitely possible I'll want to go a longer distance sometimes.
* I'll mostly be in the city/suburbs, but I might occasionally go off-road onto some gravel or grass.
* Where I live there are some "rolling hills" so they have mostly gradual slopes but occasionally they can be steep-ish. With some flat stretches in between.
* I'm a large rider (250 pounds) so I need something that can support my weight well with groceries in tow.
The 750W:
* Has longer range, but that won't necessarily come up too often where I really need that range.
* Has a more powerful motor and more torque. The guy I spoke to at my local bike shop thinks this is the big reason to go for the 750W version of this model specifically. He said a lower wattage bike can be just as good if it's tuned for torque, but the 500W version of this model isn't, which is especially useful for such a heavy bike.
* Better at climbing hills/starting from a stop. And I'm out of shape. Idk how bad the 500W would be because I didn’t get a chance to try it, but I don't wanna regret buying it if it's way more work on hills.
* Since I'd possibly be pushing near to the weight limit between myself + cargo, 750W might be less strained?
* Comes with the LevelUp Rack (like the 500W), suspension seat post (yay!), elite headlight (meh), bike lock (meh), phone mount (seems kinda low quality but I needed one anyway so I guess I'll use it for now), and maybe a comfort seat? I think it probably won't come with the comfort seat because I think the images in the listing are wrong. (I'm buying from Best Buy.) I’d probably wanna replace the comfort seat eventually but it could at least prolong my need to buy another seat.
The 500W:
* Is $300 cheaper.
* The range would be sufficient *most* of the time.
* Is technically still rated for 80 pounds more than my weight.
* Doesn’t come with any accessories I don't need but I'd still need to buy a suspension seat post and phone mount right away. And maybe a better seat too.
* Maybe I'm being overly worried about all my previously mentioned concerns and it would be good enough.
So which one would you guys go for in my situation?
A lower stakes bonus question: blue or white?
Thanks. 🙏

I'm looking at purchasing one of these myself. Here we are months later - are you happy with it?
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Well, I'm not entirely sure it's the bike I would've chosen if I had more choice (due to the payment method I wanted to use, Lectric was my best bet, though I could've gotten a different Lectric bike). Having said that, however, I'm pretty happy with it. I guess I'll just list some general thoughts as bullet points here:
I think there was something else I was gonna say but I forgot. 😅 but feel free to ask any more questions that come to mind.
ennuionwe@reddit
Thanks for this detailed reply! Have you had any reliability/mechanical issues? Do you ever ride in the rain? Did you spring for the extended warranty?
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Oh yeah, one thing I forgot to mention: don't believe the claim that you can ride it straight out of the box. The tires on mine were only partially inflated and to different levels. The nuts & bolts will need tightened too. You can take care of the tires yourself with a pump obviously but I would take it to a shop for the rest, unless you already have torque wrenches & Allen keys for it & you trust yourself with all that.
ennuionwe@reddit
Thanks again for all this info! There's someone near me with an XP4 for sale with about 3,300 miles on it, asking $800. No indication as to whether it's a 500 or 750. My thinking is that with those kind of miles it'd be pretty risky buying it off them even at the $500 I'm inclined to push them for but I wonder if you have any opinion on that.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Yeah I'm a little sus of used ebikes but I'm no expert. I'd say definitely push for lower with that many miles on it but you can probably learn a lot by checking it out in person, asking some questions and going for a test ride. I'd pass if:
That’s my intuition anyway. I bought my XP4 new so I didn’t have to consider this before.
ennuionwe@reddit
Thanks, that all totally makes sense to me. I was actually thinking of just offering them $5 to let me see if it'd fit folded in the trunk of my Avalon, which is another thing I'm wondering.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
I'd understand if they were hesitant to let you try, but you could probably figure it out by folding the bike on the ground and eyeballing it.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
1) No, not as far as I remember. 2) A couple of times. Only if it's a light drizzle, not a down pour. I got a dedicated hand towel for wiping it off when it gets wet. 3) No.
Kixclusive_1@reddit
I recently bought the 750 I’m about 220lbs. Happy with the decision and the cargo racks are great for groceries. My trip is about 12 miles, when I get home the battery indicator says 80% and that’s going through the Williamsburg bridge twice and a couple of uphills in my commute.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Yeah I bought the 750 too.
Strict_Second_1922@reddit
If your thinking about it that much you will probable never be happy with the 500w thinking the grass would be greener.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
But do you think it really is?
WearySignature4531@reddit
I have an XPeak and two XP 2.0s. They struggle past a 25-degree incline, maybe doing 12mph full throttle. I weigh 150lbs. They really bog down on a 45-degree hill, barely breaking 8mph, but that's just asking too much. Other than that, they scoot up hills just fine.
The phone mount is garbage. I also wouldn't trust that lock at all--I use a Kryptonite u-lock.
The Elite headlight -works- but is a projector that has a very small FOV--it's decent for distance but does not flood very much. It's still way better than their "premium" previous light.
I use three separate lights: Olight RN2000, RN400 (both vertically mounted to the stem), & a Seeker 2 w/ 3D printed bracket mounted to the front four (basket?) holes on the XP2.0.
For the XPeak, I just use the Elite headlight and an RN2000 mounted to the handlebars. Don't really have any other places for lights on that one.
The suspension post is definitely required. I hate all their seats/saddles and bought gel ones.
Superb_Raccoon@reddit
25 degree incline is rare. Even in SF you can go around that kind of steep.
chiphook57@reddit
No comment on 45 degrees at 8mph?
Superb_Raccoon@reddit
Hills of Unusual Size?
I don't believe they exist...
Seriously, the steepest road in the world is 35%, amd is only 350m long.
So 45% must be off road.
WearySignature4531@reddit
I didn't say a road. I said a hill.
Superb_Raccoon@reddit
So off road?
Then the watt limits dont aplly.
WearySignature4531@reddit
Well that is very out of context. The road is 6 feet away, I'm riding on the sidewalk. Where do you people live that hills and inclines don't exist?
There are people's driveways that are on a 45-degree (or greater) incline near me. I honestly don't know how they park their cars on them.
chiphook57@reddit
Please provide a picture of a CAR parked on a 45 degree, or greater driveway near you.
Superb_Raccoon@reddit
I don't know if they know what a 45 degree angle is.
I think they are confusing 45% grade, or 20 degrees, with 45 degrees which is 100% grade.
45 degree angle slope would be highly modified. A military HUMVEE is maxed at out at 55% grade, ideal conditions, far short of 100% grade
WearySignature4531@reddit
I know what a 45-degree incline is. You guys are acting like I'm saying the world is flat. My mom has a weird hilly neighborhood and there's an insane hill just to get to her house. My wife got stuck trying to get up the hill in the winter time and couldn't come visit us on Christmas because of the damn thing, so she just went back to her parent's house.
You guys are acting like I'm saying the world is flat or something. It's crazy.
Superb_Raccoon@reddit
You are.
That incline is not that steep. If it is CALL GUINESS WORLD RECORDS.
Because it ks 10 degrees steeper than the current record holder:
https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/62907-steepest-street-road
YOU WILL BE FUCKING FAMOUD DUDE!
chiphook57@reddit
34.8% grade is 19.19 degrees. Op swears by 45 degrees. Don't question the logic.
Superb_Raccoon@reddit
On Flat Earth, it is!
WearySignature4531@reddit
It's not a street though. It's their poorly built driveways.
chiphook57@reddit
No arguments from me on this one
Strict_Second_1922@reddit
There is no replacement for displacement. Just don't want buyers remorse buying second best when you can afford the best. Side note bought a am4 5600 instead of am4 58003d still regret not buying best i could afford.
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
Actually, there is, it's called forced induction: turbocharger and supercharger. Which can virtually double the physical displacement.
Strict_Second_1922@reddit
True, just an old saying putting down a base.
Hungry_Freaks_Daddy@reddit
I got a 10400f after watching YouTube videos showing like a slight difference percentage wise of frame rates between that cpu and each step up cpu.
I regretted it every day I played for years till I got the 10900k.
Habu93@reddit
The 750watt is the way to go. Well worth the extra money. My ebike has a 750watt motor and I am very happy with the power. I live in a hilly area and have no problems.
mickeyaaaa@reddit
according to another poster today here...ur gonna burn your house down. and many agreed with him so it must be true.
zkde@reddit
I test rode the 500w first and thought it was great. I did the 750w next and immediately thought it was fast enough to start doing dumb things with. I could have gotten a scratch and dent 750w for $1100 at the Lectric warehouse in Phoenix but they didn’t have a pair, so ultimately skipped. They do some silly sticky note reservation system. Ended up testing Aventon and Aima and was very happy where I ended up.
Moonunitswing@reddit
I think the extra 300 bucks would help you buy accessories but 750w would help with commuting and hill climbing. I like to buy the most powerful bike that I can get. I’m coming off of a very powerful motorcycle so I went big. Either way you’re going to love the freedom!
theoriginalchrise@reddit
750 hands down.
_matlock_@reddit
Get the 750. You think you’ll only need the 500, then as you use it more you’ll want to upgrade. Save your future self the price of a new bike and get the better one now.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Done. 🫡
Old-Pomegranate-7730@reddit
I saw a lot of posts about the 750 having problems. Have they corrected this? Or is it still a problem? I read many posts here about the Velotric being superior in every way, but not sure I want to spend that much. I think I have resigned myself to going with the Aventon.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Yeah I've heard from multiple sources that the QC issues they had been having were fixed. Including from the guy who works at the bike shop that sells Lectric and Velotric bikes.
Old-Pomegranate-7730@reddit
The problems have me concerned. I live right by their company store. Was going to stop by and pick one up but the horror stories have me cold feet. Even for a budget bike I don’t want headaches. And it only has a 1 year warranty.
ASTROTHUNDERRRRR@reddit
Same. Im leaning towards velotric at this moment. Im just waiting if I get chose for the washington ebike rebate. Still have 2 weeks to decide
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
I’d probably get a Velotric if I could but I can’t.
Old-Pomegranate-7730@reddit
Not sure what to get, but I think Lectric is out of the running. Really considering the Aventon Pace 4.
PanamaCelery@reddit
You will never have an opportunity to upgrade that bike from the 500w features to those included in the 750w bike for $300 dollars again. No brainer, get the 750.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
True.
Superb_Raccoon@reddit
Its practically a dollar a watt!
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
lol I hadn’t thought about that but you’re right.
_KeepOnTrucking_@reddit
My bike requires 1500w to make it up the bigger hills around here.
I started with 500w and it just stalled on the hills.
SheepherderHumble440@reddit
I ended up getting the 750 because of my weight (230 lbs) and potential cargo weight (work stuff, groceries, cooler/drinks, ect). I was told I would regret the 500. I’m SUPER happy with the 750 and agree that the 500 may not have performed as well as the 750.
gtr187@reddit
I'd go for the 750 myself - I happen to also hail from KC and have been eBiking around since last Sept, so knowing the area and what you shared re: your size, I think your ride experience will be definitely enhanced by the extra power.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Oh hey neighbor! What bike do you have out of curiosity?
gtr187@reddit
I bought a budget bike online from Aipas - it's treated me well so far. I do plan to upgrade - I like Velotric so something like this might be my next one Velotric Discover 3 | Upgraded Comfort Commuter Ebike https://share.google/RKxhGjoclZW8mGvD3
CaterpillarKey6288@reddit
If you were 150 lbs the 500w would probably be ok. However at 250 lbs the bike will have a limited range (believe the 750 comes with a larger battery) and going up hills would be a struggle for it. I have a 750w bike and I'm only 200 lbs (not a xp4 though) and it does does ok on small hills but steeper hills with me on it, it will only go 15mph. My 140 wife can make up the same hills at closer to 20 mph.. The range with me is 20 miles on full power, the wife gets 25 miles. The small 500w are made for light crusing around and are not meant for daily commute.
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
I'd go with the Lectric Xpress instead for the fixed frame and larger, more stable, wheels. And just remove the front wheel when you need to transport it inside a vehicle.
Prestigious_View_401@reddit
750w is the way to go. You’re welcome
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Any reason why?
Prestigious_View_401@reddit
Bigger battery and noticeably faster motor
don_stouder_photo@reddit
No brainer, 750w. Worth every penny.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Why is it a no brainer?
Daboujieboo89@reddit
20x3 tires seem more expensive than 20x4 for some odd reason idk...

The $300 is almost cut in half by a new seat post, phone mount and seat, depending on what you're looking at.
You'll feel that difference in wattage the most on hills. The more hilly the area, the more I'd be leaning toward the 750.
The range you get is dramatically impacted by speed. If you expect to be using this at or near top speeds, know how much less range you're really going to get. I can quadruple the range if I stay in PAS 3 vs PAS 5.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Yeah I live in the Kansas City area. Depending on where you go it can be pretty hilly. The house I live in is built into a hill.
Neat_Clothes_248@reddit
Do you need it? Absolutely not. Xp4 500 will go more than 20 to 40 moles per trip and will be powerful enough.
If money is a big issue go with the 500. If money isn't a problem who wouldn't want more range and power?
