How to drive with low profile tyres, any tips?

Last week I just bought a new Audi which has huge aluminum wheels and very small sidewall tyres (225/40 R18) if compared to other cars I've driven, my old car mounted 195/60 R15 tyres
Also I'm living in Italy so there's plenty of speed bumps and stone paved roads in particular, on top of potholes which can be found everywhere
When driving over not so good roads I'm still comfortable because the car is just awesome to say the least, however I'm always afraid of damaging the tyres or even worse bending the rims which would cost a fortune.
I always try driving as slow as possible and attacking the bumps at an angle or avoiding potholes whenever possible, what other tips can you give me?
