Everything is Greek until proven to be Macedonian
oh wait
Sad_Pickle8446@reddit
Lol. The people with minds on their own, we are friendly. On one online game I play I have a good friend Turk and we call each other brother.
But there are people who want to benefit for their own good and say bad words to the people about the other country.
RasyonelRumi@reddit
My experience in the U.S. was very different. Our relationship felt pretty cold and distant. There were four girls in one of my classes, we didn’t really talk much, but there wasn’t any conflict either. You could definitely feel that something was off.
slysmile@reddit
Greek and Armenian diaspora in the US is extremely turcophobic, while we get along pretty well around the neighborhood here.
lupi64@reddit
I've been seeing Armenians making fun of Greeks and Greeks not liking Armenians lately. But nothing against Turks. What's going on with Armenians and Greeks in Europe? In the US, they're usually close. Ex USSR effects?
cenkxy@reddit
Competition in Turkish hate hahah
lupi64@reddit
Oh wow, that's very interesting! Are you familiar with René Girard and mimetic theory? Thanks for answering!
saddinosour@reddit
This behaviour (as diaspora) is so fucking strange to me. I remember growing up I didn’t even know what happened between Greece and Turkey, I actually learned from reddit and then googling it for myself.
I worked through those emotions pretty quickly and maybe it’s because I hang out here maybe it’s because I’m not deranged but I have nothing against normal* Turkish people if they’re not weird to me or other Greek people.
Also a related story to just exemplify the ridiculousness.
A girl at my school who was Macedonian diaspora hated me because I am Greek and once again I didn’t know the “beef”. Her hatred alerted me to the beef because I googled it. I thought it was ridiculous so I’d go out of my way to be really nice to her and force interactions to mess with her mind. 😭. If we happened to be somewhere alone in school I’d compliment her and be very bubbly.
mantiklidusunenadam@reddit
Ahahahaha I LOVE IT!
slysmile@reddit
You're a fantastic human being.
FeelTheKetasy@reddit
To be fair the Greek diaspora is racist to even Greeks they’re just a special breed 💀
Beedlam@reddit
Can't think why... /s
Bilmemkineyapsam@reddit
Isn’t an excuse to be a bigot but anyways
Beedlam@reddit
Can i have my grandfathers land in Girsun back then?
slysmile@reddit
You probably could if you have a deed or any official document actually
int23_t@reddit
Yeah you can come and buy it, if it's a large piece of land you'd probably even get citizenship from buying it.
If you expect it to be free, do know that population exchange came with property exchange, you expelled Turks and brought Greeks which lived where expelled Turks used to and vice versa. So if you want it for free give someone their great grandparent's land in Crete or something for free.
slysmile@reddit
Not all population exchange came with property exchange. I know cases (on both sides) of the Turkish-Greek population exchange that have had legitimate claims to property ownership back at their home town and was accepted by both countries. Population exchange between our two countries was basically legitimized ethnic cleansing and both societies I think still feel the wounds.
slysmile@reddit
Not what I'm talking about mate.
CypriotGreek@reddit
You know what, man, I was gonna write a big reply about diaspora power dynamics, but you’ve got a whole different thing going on, I hope you got your wish.

I think Diaspora people are a little different.........greeks are my favorite nation, and I always had great experience with the greeks from greece & cyprus. one time i had weird experience was she was from germany - which i guess other fellow greeks would perhaps experience with a turk from outside
Bugatsas11@reddit
90% of the diaspora Greeks I have met are like a parody of what Greece was in the 60s.
We also make fun of them
PastMathematician470@reddit
How was greece in the 60s? Sorry i've never seen greeks in social media until few years.
onomatophobia1@reddit
Haha literally turks as well
Savings_Show_8499@reddit

Im a diaspora Turk, met many greeks also had a fellow student who was one. Never had any issues. So it really matters that bad people just excist.
ria_89@reddit
I’m a diaspora Greek and same here. Perhaps it’s because my family came here more recently than the “60s” referenced above. But regardless, met many Turks in the US and never an issue. Cheers.

I dated a Greek girl a long time ago. We kind of loved each other and It was nice, but I didn’t continue because her family wouldn’t accept a strong masculine Turkish man like me 🤪

I didn’t know Greeks had such strong family ties. I learned it from her. Her mom said, “You can see him, but don’t get serious.” So I ended it right away. I didn’t want her to have to choose between me and her family. But we had created many spicy memories together🔥🌶️
casual_philosopher02@reddit
I mean they are more open to dating foreigners here in Greece than in diaspora
officer996@reddit
Yes, dating and sex are okay, but as far as I understand, they don’t want their daughters to marry a Turkish man.
Young_Owl99@reddit
Turks and Greeks generally get along well in real life. I never met a Greek myself, except for a really brief English conversation in Serbia but from what I heard, people who went abroad for living or doing Erasmus often say Greeks and overall southern Europeans are best to get along.
Bugatsas11@reddit
I have witnesses a number of romance between Greeks and Turks when students abroad. They rarely last but they are quite funny.
I have also had many good Turkish friends during my time in the Netherlands
CypriotGreek@reddit
I used to date a Turkish girl. During the fires in Turkey a couple years ago she called me and blamed us for the fires while calling me a Greek dog. Good times.
Young_Owl99@reddit
She just wanted to hear your voice again how lovely lol.
CypriotGreek@reddit
What a beautiful way to express love. It’s up there with “orospu cocugu”
Fiery_Flamingo@reddit
You made me think… I’m fairly certain the people who love me swear at me more than the people who hate me.
My grandpa used to call me “eşşoğlueşeğin evladı” when he got angry, which translates as “son of son of donkey”. I miss him…

I'm a Turk living abroad and my closest friend here is an Italian so this checks out i guess :D
Unfortunately, there's only 1 Bulgarian and shit ton of Italians where I live but they're the only people where I can joke around freely as they won't get offended unlike most Americans I've met tbh.
Optimal-Broccoli6063@reddit

Guys you can downvote me but from the outside Greeks look like Christian Turks and Turks look like Muslim Greeks
dallyan@reddit
I’ve traveled a lot in Greece and spent a lot of time in Greek neighborhoods in the diaspora and never had a problem. Not ever. To the contrary.
levenspiel_s@reddit
That's true for all nationalities, as far as my experience goes, but you bond much more easily with Balkan people. I am not sure exactly why, but you just enjoy each other's company better.
Maybe because we don't see each other as country flags or history books, but as persons. We definitely talk about tricky topics such as the history or the politics, but it's never heated (at least in my experience).
Puppet_Fz@reddit
I had a Greek teacher while I was in Germany for language school. At the first day he said he was greek and he was my fav teacher there. We Turks were getting really well along in the class and he often made jokes abt saying “tamam”, “haydaa” and other Turkish words. I miss him so much but in general also in Greece Turks are mostly welcomed according to my experiences

the gonzo style comment is underrated, but honestly in my experience turks and greeks get along fine one on one. it’s the politicians and nationalists on both sides that keep the tension alive. regular people just want to eat baklava and argue about who makes better coffee, not fight a war over it

I think it would be a very passionate relationship but a relationship hardly a two person thing in our cultures. The families, the burden, the past, the things going on now and future all will be a problem.
Women are always right, Turks are always wrong so a Turkish woman in such a relationship might cause system crash in balkans.

So what you're saying is that any resemblance to actual persons is purely coincidental?

Yeah I think the whole Greek-Turk hate just exists among old people or very nationalist people, everyday interactions aren't hostile at all, they're quite friendly.

I once had a really funny, jolly greek friend in a game called Lineage 2 on a private server. My hometown is also a port very close to Greece so I’ve always seen Greek people irl as well, sometimes even met them irl.
I learned that some Greeks hate us later when some Greek dude saw me typing in Turkish in a public chat and decided he doesn’t want to associate with me. He asked me where I am from when I asked for party invitation (or a trade) and when I said Turkey, he said “no thanks”, I was like “what? Why?” then I realised he is Greek. We also have such people, clinging to the past as if they lived back then and went through the horrors of war themselves.

I was refering to people of Assyria, not the empire

well still same since they re ethnic native to northern mesopotamia which is vey close border to anatolia.
