Seems to be based on the previous gen transaxle C190 rather than the current porker, interesting for Mercedes to make the GT/Pro & the Black completely different cars. Side exit exhausts, active fender louvres, active rear wing, going to be a very cool competitor to the GR GT, GTD, etc.
Its going to homologate the new AMG GT3, pictured in red towards the end
>Seems to be based on the previous gen transaxle C190 rather than the current porker
The rumours say it's a bespoke platform build around a carbon chassis, primarily created to replace their venerable C190-based GT3 car. Following a race-car-first approach similar to the Ford GT, the new Black Series, as you say, is said to be a homologation version of the GT3 car.
The previous GT3 car was designed and built by their long-time partner HWA. The new GT3 car is being created in-house by the newly formed Affalterbach Racing GmbH (AFB) under the AMG roof.
i dont normally care about upper market consumer products, but i was distraught when i found out that the new GT wasnt a C190. the perfect car, reliable and repeatedly breaking records everywhere it went. even held "mountain demon king" (touge mao) on hot version japan, then they went and screwed it all up :(
>then they went and screwed it all up :(
Well, the new AMG GT is a genuinely excellent grand tourer.
The previous GT, on the other hand, wasn't really a grand tourer at all—it was more of a true sports car, with its mid-engine layout, transaxle, dry-sump engine, and strict 2-seat configuration etc.
Yeah not to mention the DCT, hydraulic steering, hood so long you'd have to back into like every parking space to know where you're going, I had one, the transmission blew (common issue), replaced it with a GT3, much happier. Lots of revisionism on that gen
It's a fantastic track platform but the current GT was made specifically w/ customer feedback in mind (on the layout at least, idk where the interior came from), and it's a much better GT. Looks fantastic too
I don't disagree that the new ones probably "better" at a lot of things but I feel they took away what made it truly special.
The front mid engine, transaxle, the looks. Just on paper was a bit more special than an AWD, platform shared, 911 looking GT car.

The new AMG GT also makes sense from Mercedes' perspective. They can build the AMG SL/Maybach, AMG GT Coupe, and Sedan on the same platform-and even supply it to Aston Martin for their V8 Vantage.
P sure the the v8 vantage is an Aston Martin platform & they're just borrowing the engine + formerly some infotainment bits but yes its muuuch cheaper to build for them
Kinda crazy they did a transaxle GT(R) + proper v12 s-class coupe/cab + dedicated SL in the first place
grand tourers are absolutely cool yes, when they're from lexus or jaguar or someone similar, imagine if porsche replaced all of their cars with panamara derivatives but kept all of the monikers the same
Mercedes, the hyper-sporty definitely-not-luxury brand of the germans..
Really the SLR/SLS/GT were the exception for them not the norm. The previous SL is much closer to what a Mercedes AMG has been
>Really the SLR/SLS/GT were the exception for them not the norm.
Even the SLR is widely considered more of a "Super GT." It was definitely the most luxury-focused of the original "holy trinity" (SLR, Porsche Carrera GT, Ferrari Enzo).
thats exactly right, they were the exception. mercedes' entire lineup was luxury touring cars with those exceptions, why ruin the exceptions and compete with your own product lines?
There's nothing else in their product line for the GT to compete with. Their only other coupé is a C/E class mashup. The S-class coupé is gone. It makes sense for Mercedes to make the current GT somewhat split the difference between the previous one and the discontinued S-class coupé.
The C and E class coupés were discontinued. Only the CLE exists. The SL is a convertible only. It being on a separate chassis from the GT wasn't a good use of resources. If for no other reason than brand identity, Mercedes need to have a flagship tourer just like Porsche need to have a flagship sports car. Luxury tourers are far more important to Mercedes' identity and the people who buy their cars than sports cars are.
Yes, but their public road tuning was always focused on luxury intiriors, featuring relatively soft suspension and large displacement engines—essentially grand tourers or classic luxury sedans.

That immediately makes this ten times more interesting
Big fan of all the AMG GT3 Motorsport iterations we’ve had over the years. Love seeing the aero inspiration on this thing
What makes you think it's based on the C190?
I was curious on how they were going to top the previous Black Series AMG GT and homologate the GT3 car after moving to the objectively worse powertrain layout for lap times.
It would be pretty wild if the answer is pretend like they never made the C192 at all, making an implicit confirmation they watered down the C192 to appeal to the geriatric SL crowd.
Its a bit of speculation on my part, but mercedes said "the concept car serves as a technology platform for no fewer than two exceptional performance models", & it may very well be that they've changed enough from the c190 to call it all-new
but I think they've derived it from the c190 at the least unlike the current GT which is derived from the last gen c-class coupe
It would've had to have been a tier above a Z4M to compete with the Black Series, but even the Z4 would probably be a poor choice against the AMG Black series.
Z4M, which would be a Z4 with an M4 powertrain, IMO wouldn't have been on the same tier really.
The 8 series/M8 was an opening - but they doubled down on the age old "Front Engine V8 Automatic Grand Touring Car that isn't as fast as a 911 but is more comfortable" thing that basically everyone has tried and then discontinued, usually after a single generation.
For anything as quick as the previous black series, much less this upcoming one, including storage & transportation costs? Not really, especially considering race cars depreciate like bricks while the black series have largely held its value if not appreciated
& thats if you find somewhere to actually run the thing, its not like you can run a cup car on a nordschlife tourist day
Basically agree with everything you said.
I will say though that any current gt3 car is faster than the last black series, I'm pretty sure 911 gt3 cup cars are faster too. That being said a new gt3 car is almost a million dollars.
Yeah I think the equivalent to the black would probably be somewhere between a cup car & a gt3, p sure the amg one just about matches the gt3 on certain circuits
But pretty sure a cup car on its own is like $375k now so if you actually get a black series for msrp it's ... good value? Obviously the unrestricted power is doing it some favors there
