Evo Cuatro Rental Car in Spain

On vacation in Spain, and this was our rental car. Chinese made. The brand is Evo, the model is Cuatro. Gotta love that color! 1.5 liter gas engine, 4 cylinders, 5 speed manual. 117 horsepower and 100 lb/ft of torque. It's a very weak engine - have to downshift a lot to stay with traffic. But other than that is perfectly comfortable and nicely equipped.
We were the first renters for this one and it still had a lot of the shipping plastic and little foam blocks on the body.
Apparently they sell each model in only one trim level - no options are available. Not available with an automatic. It's about $19,000 to purchase new - cheap by US standards.
We've had absolutely NO problem finding it in parking lots lol.

Definitely a Chery Tiggo 4 aka dR in some European countries

It's not 19k$. I swear all Americans convert € to $ the wrong way around. 20k€ >= 23k$

Lighten up, smarty-pants. This American lives in Italy. Evo has a promo price on its Italian website for 16,900€, which today is about $19,500.
Pleasant-Swimmer-557@reddit
Promo price is like "if you come to us when full moon lines with Easter, bring your car for a trade-in and get financing from our listed banks" in most cases.

Where I am (Spain) they seem to be ~20k€. Apologies for suggesting you can't count.
paul99501@reddit (OP)
No worries. I'm sure the "real world" price is closer to what you said.

Give him a break. He’s NotTheSharpestPencil.

All these Chinese steel-waste cars have the same 1.5l engine Chinese stole from Mitsubishi
MisterDings@reddit
How do the two compare?
SzmnDzrzn@reddit
Idk time will tell quality-wise, however they are usually underpowered as they put them in suvs
paul99501@reddit (OP)
Very underpowered.
Pleasant-Swimmer-557@reddit
Nope, just overweight.

This is what it is

No one will be preserving these cars.
Admirable_Gas1653@reddit
Honestly they keep rebadging everything at Chery
Willing_Big194@reddit
Whats weird about a Chinese car?
Bernard_PT@reddit
It fits the sub, this is weird
Willing_Big194@reddit
Its plain and boring, not weird
Howard_Cosine@reddit
There is an alarmingly high number of people posting here that don’t know the meaning of “weird”.

At first I was like, no way this is only 130Nm of torque (100lb-ft) but it is, damn. But to be honest, half of the traffic around you were also probably downshifting a lot to keep up with each other.
We have small 1.0 to 1.5L cars, those are the norm.
SlaveCell@reddit
Whats up with those number plates. They look weird
Dersemonia@reddit
Fun fact: it's actually "Italian", since Evo is part of the Dr Automobiles group.
But what they do is to buy all the piece of the car from china, ship it to Italy and built it here and then rebrand it to pass it like an actual Italian car.
But I don't remember what the Evo 4 Chinese name is
burner94_@reddit
They aren't even assembled in Italy anymore, only the brand specific grilles are attached in the Italian plant. This was true for the early DR cars, circa 2006? to the early 2010s. They had to pay a fine for advertising their cars as "Italian design and craftsmanship" on their website, too.
DR's founder used to be the president of a privateer racing team which was quite successful in GT categories btw.
The Evo 4 is a rebadged JAC Refine S3.

The "genealogy" of these things is fascinating. And confusing. We're so used to the idea of cars as very specific brands rolling off branded assembly lines in branded factories, but now even cars are being "Temu-ized."
burner94_@reddit
And the funniest part in all of this is, sometimes this is only done for the sake of resurrecting an old brand from another country in the hope that people "believe it" and can't see through the Chinaslop
Examples: Moskvitch in Russia, Ebro in Spain, SWM in Italy (although the original incarnation of the brand only made motorbikes, not cars), Borgward in Germany.
To some extent this can also be said about the Chinese MGs, but those seem to be quite alright
Willing_Big194@reddit
Not even assembled in Italy... just a Chinese brandslap
rockstar_not@reddit
Looks like yet another stolen by China design. If you are comfortable with that, well there you go.

Looks like local variant of some old gen of Chery Tiggo 4. NA engine and CVT (was available at some markets) wasn’t good but turbo + DCT combo makes it really nice little car. Some markets even have it with 4WD.
