Are American tourists are common sight in your country? If so what do you think of them? In Greece theres been a massive boom of them in recent years (post-covid) and they are now one of the largest group of tourists

People joke that Putin ended COVID, but the Croatian economy is so dependent on tourism that it was the beginning of the tourist season that ended the lockdown in Croatia.

vanity-flair83@reddit
Can u explain this take about putin ending covid, or tell me what to Google, bc, obviously, thats not a claim u hear in the west
SansBouillie@reddit
Hey, I donāt think the joke has a single origin for me to send you a link.
I live in Western Europe, and I've heard it repeated here since early 2022. The idea was that after the war in Ukraine started, governments (maybe ones most affected e.g. European ones?) largely stopped talking about COVID and related measures or COVID lost its relevancy in the news, so people joked that Putin ended COVID.
Iāve heard it here and in the Balkans. More recently, Iāve also seen a post on an international subreddit and it seems to be a joke in Latin America and elsewhere too.

dubufeetfak@reddit
They're hard to miss. Usually fat and loud. Especially the ones coming from cruisers.
Me on the other hand, i look as im about to go work on a beach bar or in the olive fields.
So our friend Jorgo doesn't register me as a tourist at all.
Wild-Act-7315@reddit
Huh, Greek people are so much louder than Americans. I grew up in America, and came to Greece and was shocked at how loud everyone talked here. I can hear people outside talking on the phone, and people in my apartment building sound like theyāre shouting when having a whole conversation in the stairwell area. In America it wasnāt like that at all for me, people were generally quieter, and more thoughtful of their noise level. Thatās not to say we donāt raise our voice when excited or when weāre happy, but with a normal conversation we donāt typically sound like weāre yelling like Greek people sound. I donāt know I just feel like Greeks are way louder than Americans are.
dubufeetfak@reddit
Its not just about db levels. Its about their annoying high pitch. The overly long "oooOOH heeEEELLLOOOOOOooouuuuuuuu, hooooOOOOOOWWWWwwe AAAAAAAREEEEeeee yyooOOOOUUUuuuuu"
We're loud as well. And ive probably spent more time in Greece than you. I know how loud we and greek can be. But its not the same as an american loud.
Wild-Act-7315@reddit
I donāt know no one in America that I know of is screaming āoooooooh heeeeellllllllloooooo, Hooooowwwww arrrrrreeeee yoooouuuuā when they answer the phone. Donāt get me wrong sometimes there are some moments where pitches can be annoying in Americans, but most of the time we are actually quiet, unless itās someone we havenāt spoke to in a really long time, or alcohol gets involved (but every culture gets loud and rowdy when alcohol is involved). I donāt know Greeks just seem like theyāre yelling all the time. When I first met my husbandās family I thought his dad was yelling at his mom. He told me thatās just how they talk that theyāre really loud like that. Itās true though they havenāt talked any less quieter since Iāve met them, and I see them very very often. People here are also so loud even on phone calls, āĪĪĪĪ ĪĪĪĪ, ĪĪĪĪĪ ĪĪĪΧĪ! ĪĪĪĪĪĪĪĪĪĪĪ! ĪĪĪĪĪĪĪ ĪĪĪĪĪ ĪĪĪĪā I hear it outside my apartment a from a block away all day long.
dubufeetfak@reddit
I didnt say on phone. Thats americans in person. Anyway, thats my personal experience with a part of American tourists. You can believe it or not, thats your choice. Im not arguing you any longer as its pointless. Take care

I donāt know. The Greeks are a little bit more āloving lifeā then most of other Balkan nations and Slavic nations.
How was it a lovely little Taver a few days ago. And I watched some women, roughly. My age just dancing and loving life. I hope they didnāt think I was being creepy, but I was just admiring how much they appreciated being alive.
You just donāt see that too often elsewhere in the Balkans.
TrainingHeavy1666@reddit
Greeks can not buy properties anymore. Thank God you take our land. Lol. No seriously, you pay taxes and everything is fine but we are jealous of you as we can't enjoy our life's anymore. We may dance and walk by the sea with an ice cream or smile but we are in serious problem. We are struggling financially
baron_spaghetti@reddit
My dude. This was my severance package money because Trump killed my job.
I just want to get the fuck away from his destructive tendencies and make a minor investment. I own one house in the us and this now.
Itās a little 50 sq meter apartment in a building with nothing but Greek owners in a rural seaside town. Itās Mostly pensioners. They know me by name and like me because I always fix a little of their property too when I have left over materials. Lots of candies oranges and coffee. Iām a good neighbor.
This was not a ridiculously expensive property. Just over 110k Euros but a lot of effort in fixing it. Itās place I rent to friends and family who live Greece and give that sweet sweet tourist bucks to these communities.
Is a 110k euro apartment is the middle of nowhere really out of the reach of the regular Greek?
TrainingHeavy1666@reddit
Congratulations, and I hope you enjoy it the way you want!
Yes, it is difficult for young people in Greece to buy even a ā¬110,000 property. When the net salary is about ā¬740 per month (and ā¬920 gross), there is nothing left for savings.
Also, after 15 years of economic crisis, the average Greek no longer has any financial reserves, and families are no longer able to contribute extra money. Thatās why Greeks usually donāt leave their parentsā homes until around the age of 35 anymore. They simply cannot cope with rent, and banks do not easily give out loans nowadays.
The only sectors that are doing well financially are those working with computersāespecially if they work remotely for foreign companiesāas well as top doctors, famous singers, politicians, and successful influencers. Thatās the bitter truth.
The average Greek, especially since 2021 and after the situation with Ukraine and Russia as they say, carefully counts kilowatt-hours for electricity, money for food, and fuel for the car.
I am a young woman, newly married, with a good job in a pharmacy, educated, with a husband who has a family businessāand believe me, the state provides very little support and imposes high taxes on basic goods.
We rent a house with high rent because there are no financial alternatives, and just yesterday our landlord increased our monthly rent. Of course, the bank does not approve us for a loan, since my salary is only the minimum wage, even though I have education, experience, and a strong CV.
Everyone in Greece offers the minimum wage
baron_spaghetti@reddit
Iām quite sorry. I do see some tandems from what you described with my chats with locals.
I also see much āside hustleā with younger Greeks often evading taxes or other regulations. I donāt judge but I reasoned it would be more āneedā than āwantā.
At first, I thought the perhaps such a situation might be similar to whatās happening in North America with affordability in buying homes.
The US side has mostly a huge problem with corporations buying homes and keeping the prices out of the range of new homeowners,
The Canadian site has a slightly different problem with foreign owners (Iāll not go into it as many of the homeowners come from a specific country) that do not like to rent these homes to locals often times preferring to let them stay empty.
And results are the same. Many young people cannot afford a first home and are stuck in an endless cycle of high rents.
TrainingHeavy1666@reddit
Nowadays, I think housing is a global problem. Because of Airbnb (which I actually prefer over hotels since it allows ordinary people to earn some extra income, but in Greece they rent for 6 months and then tell you to leave because after 6 months it must go to short-term rental), because of the global energy crisis, because of wrong decisions by the EU, but more importantly, because of internal politics.
And no, Iām not aligned with any party. Every party I voted for has completely disappointed me. Even Mitsotakis. I donāt know who to vote for anymore or even if I should go vote. Itās a vicious cycle. Taxes are sky-high on basic goods like electricity, gasoline, and food. We were never a rich country like Switzerland, for example, but each family member could own a car, not worry too much about money for groceries, or take a 10-day summer vacation in or outside Greece.
Now, these things are luxuries. When tomatoes reach ā¬6.50 wholesale in Greece, where they are produced, you can imagine how much they cost retail. We even have to think about tomatoes now. Unfortunately.
I hope for better years ahead.

Cargo shorts + Baseball cap = American
jaleach@reddit
*Quietly removes the baseball cap I'm currently wearing*
vanity-flair83@reddit
Luckily I ditched the cargo shorts 10-15 years ago. But I still break out the baseball cap fairly regularly, as I was somewhat of a collector in my 20's. My Seattle supersonic, Baltimore Bullets, New Orleans Hornets, and Houston Oilers caps are dope af tho.
Not to mention the various iterations of my beloved orioles hats.
BelredRobby@reddit
I am from Seattle and our Sonics are coming back. Baseball hats make sense in Pacific Northwest. Hit me up if you want a Seattle mariners cap
vanity-flair83@reddit
Lol. I actually gave my M's hat to my cousin, who's an M's , when i saw him last summer to go to an O's game. Thanks for the offer tho.
jaleach@reddit
I'm not sure if it's the hat that angers them, or if it's the team logos on them. Probably it's the slovenly appearance (most Americans are slobs)?
I've never worn cargo shorts, so I'll count that as a win.
Honestly, the only reason I wear these baseball hats is that they belonged to my Dad, and he died in 2024. Wearing them makes me feel closer to him. I won't be wearing them when I visit the Balkans because they've got the American flag on them along with some rah rah Murica wording on them..
Having said that, I never wore hats until I hit 40, and all of a sudden, I always had a hat on. My favorite is a beanie I got for free nearly 20 years ago. I'm seriously considering going to a store and buying more hats in different styles.
A hat style I like, and I hate to admit this, is the caps the Ustase wore during WWII. They've got two or three folds, and I like the look, but I'd never buy one or wear one because of the stigma associated with them. It's like Hitler's mustache. Even if you thought it was a cool look, he ruined it due to all the mass murders he committed.
vanity-flair83@reddit
Yeah i haven't worn a hat since turning 40, 3 years ago. And I wish I could say I've never worn cargo shorts, but I did give them up circa age 30
Really, although I have multiple oriole hats ( them being my favorite team) I really just get hats that match stuff I already have or are vintage as ge, like the Oilers one. And I do wear other kinds of hats, beanie/winter hat types, but i think the contention here is baseball hats.i dont think it actually angers anyone, its just a surefire give away
But about americans dressing like slots, I dont think theres any question...we do lol. Have u ever seen pics of college students in like the 50's? Ful on suit&tie/dress shoes.
Im not sayi g we need to get back to that, but it'd be nice if more ppl took more pride in their appearance.
Also sorry to hear about your dad. Im disabled ( spinal cord injury) so I've been living back home since then) and we've gotten really close, and i have a lot of leftover guilt over what I've put her through. Well she's 80 rn and I literally have nightmares about her dying...idk what the he'll im going to do.
But anyway, at the end of the day...whether it be hats/t-shirts, whatever...I wouldnt wear anything "rah rah america" rn, nor have I ever bc I just feel like its cheesy

That early ninties sonics team was such a good watch. Gary Payton, Detlef Schremf (sp?), and, not least of all, Shawn effing kemp..dude was a monster.
The NBA should be utterly ashamed of themselves for the fact that Seattle doesn't have a team
I know Seattle is a contestant for an expansion team ( why that f are they expanding when 1/3 of the league isn't even hiding their tanking and the NBA's popularity is in decline), but instead of the sonics still being there, they put teams in, iirc, Toronto (worked out and Vancouver (complete disaster lol))

IkmoIkmo@reddit
Tbh I think American tourists are pretty nice.
They're super loud and annoying, I can hear them from a mile away, and the accent and the things they talk about is very cringe. But I think generally they're simply unaware of this and not doing this intentionally. I'd say they're generally very well behaved, nice and respectful, with an interest in local cultural/historical perspectives. They tend to hire local tour guides to give them detailed information, they pay and tip well and create a lot of income for the local population (which has displacement effects that suck, but in my opinion that's a policy challenge for local regulators to solve).
So they're annoying for sure, but I have to say I respect and welcome them. They're not a bad group, of course with exceptions like every group.
This is about the American tourist in EU. Different story in Cancun or whatever, where you get a lot of beer drinking idiots.

Having never been to the Balkans...just take this w a grain of salt: big-yes. Diverse- no.
But like much of the u.s., Kansas is WAP country. . The balkans, generally speaking, speaks different languages, have varying degrees of cultural and political institutions/legacies, and varying religious affiliations
reverber@reddit
The language thing, I concede. Although there are communities in the US (including Balkan communities) where English is not the primary language. I will refrain from mentioning any linguistic similarities between any countries in the Balkans.
I don't know where the "anti-Texas" bias thing comes from. So I guess that is an indication of something people get wrong about Kansas? Though I am from NE Kansas, and SE Kansas might be anti-Texan? Kansas land area is about twice that of Bulgaria. It is big and its communities are diverse - the population is just 3 million so it is quite spread out.
Even some Americans get things wrong about Kansas. We do not ride horses to school. We are not constantly fighting off attacks from local Native Americans.
Our Governor is a Democrat, though the legislature are a bunch of performative conservatives.
Each state in the US has its own legislature and constitution, so not really a political monolith. The structures can be similar, but how they are implemented can be slightly different.
Sorry for wandering so far off topic. If it is any consolation, I spend my time in the US trying to inform people about Bulgaria, the Balkans, and Europe.

But I live in the UK and every single American tourist we get is a raging homosexual. There are always many Americans in large Polish cities and they're well received in large part thanks to Brits and Irish. The lads of the Isles treat Poland like a party hub so their behavior is generally horrible.
So if I run into an English speaking tourist that isn't loud and drunk I immediately know he or she is American.
Also, Americans speak more Polish than the British because many of the Americans that visit Poland have some connection and learned some Polish words from their grandparents. I know this because it's the first thing they always talk about.
Again, this is just generalizing but it's why Americans are well received.

Natural_Scholar_1502@reddit

P-l-Staker@reddit

Yeah, no thanks! Just pay our staff a good living wage for their work and keep your Yankee crap in the states!
vanity-flair83@reddit
As a former bartender/waiter....this is how it should be. The reality is that wait staff is unfairly overpaid ( compared to the kitchen) and are ok w that dynamic.
I haven't been in the industry for 10 years, but im confident my opinion on this would be, in say, the 10th-15th percentile, being generous.
Particularly good looking girl servers/bartenders have an unfair advantage even over other wait staff. We just never complain about it and accept that's just how it is, similar to the server vs salaried employee dynamic.
The status quo is just heavily ingrained and resistant to change, despite everyone knowing the precise reason why we're tipped employees: so businesses can underpay us to reduce the " skyrocketing price of labor". Its unjust and alien to other western nationalities, but its very hard to find practically any service industry workers ( at least in bars/restaurants" that are supportive of "european socialism" smdh

Everyone should be treated fairly and equally, nobody is more special than the other. If you want to earn more, you need to work harder and get more educated, not just expect people to hand you out money just because you think the world owes you.
Starfalloss@reddit (OP)
Itās positive and negative lol with the working conditions and wages of Greece in the industry which we unfortunately rely on (for better or well worse) have to take what we can get lol at least they are well behaved and friendly overall unlike others.
HorrorsPersistSoDoI@reddit
Do not be blinded, tipping culture is toxic and hurts everyone in the long run. Take a look at the japanese's opinion at tipping - it is "forbidden" to do it there, because it's like the customer is deciding how much the work of the seller should cost. Like, who the fuck does he think he is? Just like today he decides to pay more, tomorrow he may decide to pay less.
Also, the most important thing - it allows employers to treat their workers even worse, by not paying them enough and making the employees think the customers should be blamed.
It also creates negativity in the workplace, like, who gets to decide how much of the tip goes to who? Why don't the cook gets the majority of the tip, he cooked the food after all?
It is also tax evasion.
Should I continue, dear malaka?
ImaginaryZucchini272@reddit
i hate the tipping culture. a waiter should ask for higher salary, when they ask i always put 0% in Europe.
RepulsiveForce6288@reddit
It would be safer for Greece this way
travelingsket@reddit
Yes and then you can cry again about how no one visits your country and you have no cut off the millions international tourism brings in.Ā
Borisb3ck3r@reddit
When did any greek cry about lack of tourism? Avg maga mentality
travelingsket@reddit
You're obsessed with Trump meanwhile Americans like me have been living in your countries for years. Go clean up your drug epidemic in Athens before you come for me.Ā
Borisb3ck3r@reddit
You have skid r9w and kensigton and you talk.about drug epidemics, its like argueing with my 7yo niece
travelingsket@reddit
She clearly has more sense than you do. Good on her. You must like arguing with little girls. Weird.Ā
FantasticQuartet@reddit
You can dislike US politics without associating with mere mortals.
I'm not going to hate on a random American just because of Trump, and the truth is they bring money here by spending it here.
Observe_Report_@reddit
Thank you. I liken it to a mob mentality, choosing a scapegoat to attack, and an innocent scapegoat at that. Ridiculing the picture is childish as well, not cool. These are two young girls enjoying themselves on vacation and here someone is plastering their photo on Reddit. Classless behavior in my opinion.
jaleach@reddit
I think if you're posing for a picture, especially on a trip, you should understand that it's likely to get shared somewhere online. That's just how it is now.
The thing I hate is when people go into a business and start filming employees, especially when they're planning to cause trouble.
FantasticQuartet@reddit
It definitely sucks but that's the internet. My only consolation is that the majority won't remember their faces by the time they scroll down to the next post.
Anyway, I would say don't let Reddit form your opinion of Greece. This is a political sub and people have political opinions even when it comes to tourists. If you travel here nobody besides customs and the hotel is going to ask for your passport. And even if you tell random people you are American, nobody is going to be bothered.
sfsleep@reddit
Would love to see how your country does well without them.
Borisb3ck3r@reddit
Americans and thinking they are the most important ppl in the world, nane a morr iconic duo
sfsleep@reddit
I mean, the reason why any of us are not soviet serfs is America.
Hot-Bicycle5798@reddit
Every American i have met IRL have been nice. In Sweden, the us or in any other country. A bit loud sometimes but never the selfintled brain dead asshole you read about online.
I am a little bit disappointed that i never get my own Karen stories.
trocfare@reddit
yes, and I am fucking with a lot of americans now. Europeans are so boring.
StPauliPirate@reddit
Most americans Iāve met had armenian/greek/persian ancestry. Rarely saw āwhiteā americans. Turkey is quite a undiscovered destination among them.
travelingsket@reddit
We know all about Turkey. We just use it like the Brits. Turkey teeth and lipo so it's a hush destination.Ā
Roskovedin@reddit
Many American men go to Turkey for the hair transplants, although theyāre not exactly tourists. An acquaintance of mine just did it
Shills_for_fun@reddit
Last year when I went to Turkey, there were many, many American tourists. White ones. Maybe they told you they were Canadian but their accents don't fool me haha.
I know a lot of people personally who have been there, particularly to the western side of the country. It's probably more rare than a trip to Greece but if you're a regular traveler you'll almost certainly be going to Turkey.
KennyBlankeenship@reddit
As an American I was always treated well in Greece (2004 and 2010). I wonder if that's still the case.
Tableforoneperson@reddit
Why did they take photos with police?
GaytheonCheck@reddit
They like hot people
Proof-Ad62@reddit
Bootlicking.Ā
Mammoth-Guava3892@reddit
Why are they taking pictures with policemen? (Apart from them both being cute)
Proof-Ad62@reddit
Americans have a kink for bootlicking.Ā
robotsaretakingoverr@reddit
My friend said she thinks Greek police officers are hot
Mammoth-Guava3892@reddit
I mean, those two guys definitely are. Still I don't understand why bothering randos that you find cute to take a picture with them
Eomer444@reddit
Weirdest thing is that if American women end up in a hospital or ER they take pictures of male doctors or nurses and post them online if they think they are hot.
SaraJuno@reddit
I see that a lot maybe itās an american thing. At least 3 groups of girls taking photos with the Carabinieri last time I was in Rome
Mammoth-Guava3892@reddit
Ehm. Ok? Weirdos anyway
SaraJuno@reddit
Agree itās weird, not something Iāve ever thought to do when on holiday
David_Aaron_Finck@reddit
As I changed the parking in the disabled veterans company, Americans were definitely friendliest and generous guests. Parking is by museum "Tunel of Hope", you can buy the tickets only in our local currency. I on the parking also changed euros, so, after a totally hard night, with my girlfriend and lot of action and smoking pot, I was almost blind. American man came to change 50,00 - EUR, so I was trying and trying to find the app on my mobile, was brain-dead and no way to count the amount in the head, he saw it. So he laughed, gave me the 50 note, said : We do it simple, do it American way, I give you 50 Euros, you give me 50 Marks, that's how we do it in New York. As he's gone I realised that he just left me almost 40 marks tip. Also, the other American tourist, I had peppermint brandy in fridge, just for special guests, who wants to talk and drink one with me, the Americans loves it and the stories about our local culture, history etc...
AlbatrossOverall3948@reddit
Wow they're ugly
Observe_Report_@reddit
Wow man, you guys are so edgy with your American tourist hate. Such original content.
Sensitive-Mango7155@reddit
Most of the comments are very positive about American tourists
Observe_Report_@reddit
I have a trigger response to generalizations, having grown up with generalizations regarding Albanian-Americans in the area I live in the USA. Itās a lazy approach to take and it most certainly applies to people all across the world, itās silly talk. _ are like this. Really?
vanity-flair83@reddit
Im american...imo the majority of responses have largely refrained from overgeneralizations. Save that opinion for the western european subs where that take will be exponentially more correct
delerium1state@reddit

genadi_brightside@reddit
Americans are a special breed of tourists.
Usually pretty nice people. And usually affluent.
But I can't bring myself to not hate the living guts out of them because of politics.
travelingsket@reddit
We don't like your politicians, either. But you won't hear an opinion about them from us because everyone usually knows billionaires create political disarray and use them as puppets. Has nothing to do with the average American. I left almost 10 yrs ago.Ā
vanity-flair83@reddit
As an american, particularly regarding the 2nd paragraph...boo. America, as a political entity, doesn't do ANYTHING for altruistic reasons. And 2h3n we say "freed", all it amounts to is "changed" for the better, or, and most likely for, the worse
genadi_brightside@reddit
You are right. This is why I said Americans are nice.
It's hard for me to disconnect from all of the political cringe.
travelingsket@reddit
You hate nice people? Interesting.Ā
genadi_brightside@reddit
Right now a huge part of the world hates the Americans. That probably doesn't make you bad people. Just people with bad bad government.
I personally am not happy that I have to pay more for a lot of stuff because you people can't have a coherent policy for 10+ years and allowed an idiot to rule.
You are still welcome here ofc, but keep your politics at home. Regardless of the side of the aile you support.
Professional-Fee-488@reddit
Ah yes, freed, that's the word, very freed, so freed that those Balkan countries can never be unfreed again.
travelingsket@reddit
Men are men so blame yourselves.Ā
Professional-Fee-488@reddit
Blame ourselves for what?
travelingsket@reddit
Can't you mansplain like you always do to yourself and figure that out?Ā Ā
Professional-Fee-488@reddit
Mansplain to myself like I always do? What are you even talking about? Are you 12 or something? But anyway thanks for another message that makes absolutely no sense, this actually provides an explanation to your previous statements, you have absolutely no clue what you're trying to say, figures, have a good day.
travelingsket@reddit
Yawn. You can type an article I didn't read but can't understand how countries are led by men? Weird. Take care.Ā
Meowmeowmeow31@reddit
Thatās a weird attitude given how deeply divided Americans are over politics, and the fact that Americans who travel abroad (especially outside of North America and the Caribbean) are more likely to be against the current administration than average.
genadi_brightside@reddit
This is true. Most of the maga bozos won't travel to Europe and probably can't afford it either.
Meowmeowmeow31@reddit
The MAGA crowd are on average wealthier, actually. Itās much more about education level. Rich rural/exurban car dealer, construction business owner, electrician, farmer, etc. usually vote for Trump. Stereotypically, when that crowd travels abroad, itās usually at an all-inclusive resort or on a cruise ship.
wintermute86@reddit
what's with the scull on the uniform of the pig on the right?
Bottles4u@reddit
Itās kind of shocking to see so many Americans in Greece the last few years after always being the only American. In Naxos last year it felt like a plurality of tourists were American. Anyway, my cousins who work in tourism like American tourists esp more than Russian and Israeli. But GREEK Americans are the worst.

Iām a self-hating American traveling in Greece and Iām obviously a tourist with my big dumb backpack. A woman on the bus the other day was a total bitch to me and I was like⦠thatās fair. š¤·š»āāļø
On behalf of myself, I would like to apologize for the systematic and willful ignorance of my people and for the diabolical bullshit the US government is pulling right now (and⦠letās be real⦠has always pulled). There are certainly some good American folks out there, but Amerikkka aināt all that.
Just learned about how Greece is ramping up military collaboration with the US and expanding military infrastructure⦠shifting away from Turkey to gain a better foothold in the Med, so sadly, youāre probably going to be seeing a lot more US service officers in certain areas. š«©
vanity-flair83@reddit
As an american im really glad to see all the nuance, not overly generalized opinions in this thread.
Ask this same question in a western european country...I'll just say that opinions are much more based on reflexive emotions as opposed to generalizing stereotypes.
Not trying gain favor with synchophantic glazing...just my opinion reading these responses
Odd-Organization-740@reddit
No, I've never seen one. I'm pretty sure they only know about Greece, and think that the rest is a warzone.Ā

North-Library4037@reddit
Not that common but yes we have tourists from US. I don't hate on any tourists just because they are coming from a certain country.
Classic_Location_594@reddit
Iām there all the time. Married a woman from ŠØŃŠ¼ŠµŠ½ though and learned to read Cyrillic so maybe only partially a tourist? Probably still talk too loud and lean on things.

I wonder if they have surpassed Romanians in numbers. I remember going to Greece a few years ago and hearing my own language everywhere. A friend went to a random souvenir shop and was complaining in Romanian about the quality and prices of the products. The store owner heard him and started swearing at him, also in Romanian!!
Flaky_Specialist1143@reddit
Clearly not

hopefully not cops from the department of Omonia
The5thGreatApe@reddit
Depending on the period. German, Italian, French and British tourists are the most common in Greece but yeah Americans have done their boom lately. In some specific areas there are a lot of Russians too or were, Iām not sure.
Oxcuridaz@reddit
Are you sure? They do not have the american flag in their clothes...
Capital-Trouble-4804@reddit
Why Greece?
Golden_Diva@reddit
When you say, āAmerican touristsā are you referring to white American tourists or American in general? Iām a Black American whoās traveled to Greece (with my sister in a group tour). Iāve also traveled to Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia completely solo. I had a really nice time and the locals in each country didnāt seem to mind me. A lot of them also assumed I was from an African country until I confirmed that Iām American.
BogdanovOwO@reddit
I live in a big city with universities and I don't really care. Just be respectful and that's all. I don't generalize, but Albanians are dangerous like as rroma and now I can confirm and the Arabs are decent. I seeen a lot of people from post soviet countries and I can speak and understand a little bit of Russian because of CS 1.6 and some TV post on antenna from the Republic of Moldova (I hadnāt TV cable until 2012), but pls learn English because USSR has fall in 1991...

Thankfully not, maybe sometimes only at Lake Bled
Slight-Entertainer91@reddit
They hang out with a group of at least 8, they would try foods that are definitely not local but from the neighbouring cuisine, they will be loud af, everytime you hear them, all of them will talk the same thing (exact same words) and all they talk is literally means nothing
Dry-Dog-2867@reddit
Mostly europen , middle eastern and sometimes east asian tourists come to Turkey . rarely seen an american one

They say that they spend a lot more money than other nationalities... In my experience they are similar to Europeans in behavior, you can't tell they are Americans unless they start speaking
Big-Vegetable4550@reddit
As American who hasnāt been an American tourist in a long time, after visiting the States recently I can say that the Americans probably see the restaurant prices on the Croatian coast as reasonable! Prices in the US have gone crazy up since COVID (pretty sure itās just monopolization and price gouging - American agriculture churns out food-like substances with high efficiency). I was in the States for a month last year and couldnāt wait to get back to real food.
pphili2@reddit

I sometimes do tour guiding as a side hustle. Americans are easy going, not complicated and tip very well. Sometimes I get a 50% tip.
Embarrassed-Race5617@reddit
Most of them are nice, funny and you can have an interesting conversation. Some of them are arrogant pricks, but i think that applies to all countries
KakaoFugl@reddit

CorvidaeOccitanicus@reddit
Well I am not a balkaner but living in a very turistic place they are the most entitled of them. Invariably, the slightest contrariety brought up to a local leads to the same childish phrase :
"-I would rather spend my AMERICAN DOLLARZ elsewhere then."
Yes please. And no one takes dollar here.
PanicDry@reddit
More common. If they're not LOUD and ObNixiOUs they're tolerable. Russians are way worse, they're simply filthy pigs who pee in the swimming pool when they're drunk.
