The Tupolev Tu-164 (Fisher FP-72)

Originally a Soviet design, this aircraft is unusual for several reasons. Notably the designers opted for fixed-undercarriage to reduce cost and complexity, a unique choice for a jet airliner. Also, an unusual degree of automation enabled single-crew operation.
It saw little service with Aeroflot, but was unusual for a Soviet design for being license-built by a Western manufacturer. The manufacturer had not previously built aircraft, but they were traditionally associated with polymer molding and the fact the Tu-164 was largely of polymer construction made them confident in this new direction for the company.
The plane saw some success in the 1970's with North and South American regional carriers seeking to quickly build fleets; they were attracted by its low cost of acquisition and the cost-savings associated with single-crew operation. However it was ultimately doomed by its limited passenger capacity and few remained in service by the 1990's.
Almost forgotten, there is little information online about this unique aircraft. But it was extensively documented in the 2000's by Tim Vasquez.

It faced stiff competition from the Barbie Dream Plane.

Glad you all liked the Tu-164 page. It's over 20 years old, it's hard to believe it's still popular. I was told there was this thread about it.
Here is a hidden, rarely-seen link to the making of this feature that some of you might find interesting. https://www.weathergraphics.com/tim/fisher/the-making-of/
The only modification I did to the plane was using magic marker to black out the engine intakes to make them more realistic looking. We still have the plane in a box in storage somewhere. Maybe one of these days I'll put it up for sale on eBay.
Also for those interested in weather, here's my channel where I post US weather briefings every few days (I am a former Air Force forecaster). https://www.youtube.com/forecastlab

I need a professional aerodynamicist to do a thorough analysis of this plane. I bet it'd be a really fun read

A perfect post for March 32nd.

Well played.

It’s sad that the last ones still flying were blown up in Iran. Such a classic design.
ByronScottJones@reddit
I thought they had been repurposed by Ukraine for use in the war?
d_pyzsyo@reddit
For solid half a minute I thought this was real because of just how weird some stuff that gets posted here can get

Wikipedia lists a 164 as a 134 variant, but then the 134's page makes no mention of it at all. Someone somewhere has confused something.
