I was gifted this Connecticut Valley Arms powder rifle by my mom that she made back in the 80s. It has a serial number on it of course. I live in Ohio. Will I have to do anything to register/legally claim that it's mine now, or am I good to just keep it? (I'm 20yo is that matters).

Take it to the ATF before they come for you. Or be a free man in a free country protected by God given rights and a constitution after you break up with the US corporation.

Do I need to register anything? 😂😂 geez people. When did we become such pussified as civilians. Yes, make sure to let Joe and Hunter Biden know that you have a muzzle loader ASAP!!

You don't have to register anything. Black power guns aren't tracked and can be shipped directly to your door. They fun to hunt with for sure.

Oddly enough conversion cylinders for black powder revolvers can be shipped right to your door as well.

Muzzleloaders aren't even considered firearms in Ohio.

Your local laws may vary, but ohio itself has no long gun registry. And its a muzzleloader that uses black powder, ohio doesnt consider that to be a firearm, legally speaking

Actually Ohio does consider a muzzle loader a firearm. https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-2923.11 (B)(1) "Firearm" means any deadly weapon capable of expelling or propelling one or more projectiles by the action of an explosive or combustible propellant. "Firearm" includes an unloaded firearm, and any firearm that is inoperable but that can readily be rendered operable And Ohio case law - or why Cabelas / bass pro no longer sell black powder firearms over the internet. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna981

Nope. By the ATF Black powder weapons are not a gun.. Or firearms made before 1899

Brufar_308@reddit

By Ohio law it IS a firearm. But you are correct federal law does not consider it one.

No, for two reasons. 1. Ohio, like most states, doesn't have a database you could register a gun with even if you wanted to. 2. It's a blackpowder rifle, therefore it's not even counted as a "firearm", and is not subject to the usual federal laws surrounding guns. You could be an ex-felon and still own a musket.

Not a firearm by federal definition, IS a firearm by Ohio definition. Yes you have to register your wang with the local pee pee inspector. Just send a photo and a self addressed stamped envelope to your closest AFT office.

That is a muzzle loader. It has a rifled barrel. A musket has a smooth bore barrel. Anyhoo, it is not considered a firearm by Federal Law. No need to do anything except maybe oil that Rusty bugger down a bit.

No.
View on Reddit #8285686

just make sure the bore is clean and not rusted! black powder residue attracts rust SO quickly

You can deer hunt with it also.
View on Reddit #8271425

I've tried searching up the laws on this in my state, but all of the results are either paraphrased on websites, or outdated. Or I might just be stupid.
