Aussie expats in the UK who aren't based in London - where are you?

I’m an Aussie living in the U.K., but not London (Wales in fact). Lately I’ve been engaging a lot on here as I consider moving back to Australia, and with the many who say they love living in London compared to Aus.
But I wanna hear from Aussies who love where they are in the UK, wherever else it may be. Why did you end up there and what do you love about it?
Even-Refrigerator109@reddit
Wales! Wet, mountains, learning a new language and castles everywhere! What is not to love!?
Random-Name-1901@reddit (OP)
Ditto! North or south?
Even-Refrigerator109@reddit
South...you?

Liverpool. Ended up here for work then eventually stayed as my partner is from here.
I do love it; there’s great history and culture here, the people are lovely, cheap house prices, easy access to the lakes/snowdonia/Peak District. Loads of national trust places reasonably locally, museums, great theatres/concert venues/sports in the city and very close to Manchester if you want a bigger city (although I’m personally not a massive fan). Four decent universities. Close to Chester for a nice day trip.
A good local airport that services European flights well, and then Manchester international is still a reasonable commute.
Town is great, very easy to walk around and probably some of the best nightlife in the UK without London/southern prices. Weather is slightly better than other places up north (rains less than the Pennines region and it’s not nearly as cold due to its proximity to the sea). Regular ferries to Ireland. Frequently a stop for cruise ships if that is your vibes.
Downsides? If you work in commercial law, finance, government or banking, job opportunities won’t be as great. However, Manchester is commutable which mitigates this. There’s two beaches, but they’re not comparable to aussie beaches. Also, I’m approaching the stage of having kids, and the lack of good quality high schools (with the exception of the grammar school) is worrying. Primary schools are fine though.
The more I go back to australia, the more I appreciate public access to leisure facilities in Aus; obviously beaches, but also the development of parks (down to details such as runnable footpaths), even in large cities like Sydney and Brisbane. The council has massive funding issues here and a high burden of social welfare spending, so far less money is spent on roads and public infrastructure. As an example, in the same time that a whole tunnel and huge public parklands has been built in Sydney, my local (smallish) roundabout is still currently under construction in Liverpool. I guess that’s what you get for affordable housing though.

Thanks - agree on the last point. I've never been to liverpool which is weird... definitely need to go there. I go up to manchester a lot so pronbably should do a combo trip soon
Clogheen88@reddit
Definitely go and visit. Many of the museums in town are free and it’s a great weekend on the beer.’Try and wait til the Maritime/Slavery Museum is back open next year after its renovation, cause that’s one of the best ones for a bit of local history. The Anglican cathedral is also worth a visit, quite spectacular.
And agree with the other commentator, combine with Chester, which is a lovely city as well, especially for a Roman history fix as well as the Races if that’s of any interest to you.
nonsequitur__@reddit
Liverpool is great. Also recommend a visit to Chester.
TangerineCassidy@reddit
The mere fact that you call it "Town" is enough to tell me you're a naturalised Scouser. I've never been to Aus but as a big RL fan I genuinely envy you guy's access to leisure facilities and outdoor activities. I regularly say to my best mate England would be such a better place to live if we could just move the whole of Britain and Ireland further south, somewhere around Portugal would be nice!
Clogheen88@reddit
Haha, thank you! I would say though Liverpools improving in terms of parkland accessibility recently, especially riverfront in otterspool and beachfront in Crosby (and formby if we’re counting it) and some of the suburban parks like Calderstones and Croxteth. But yeah, on the weather front, Aus does win out there.
Unfortunately though, I’m an AFL fan through and through so I’ll have to pass on the RL, but I’m also a football fan (though I’m neither red or blue) so I do appreciate that aspect of Liverpool too! If I was live anywhere in the UK for the rest of my life, it would be Liverpool.

There are good schools in the Wirral (well, outside Birkenhead) - and its commutable to Liverpool
Clogheen88@reddit
Agreed, especially the grammar schools. Although where I currently live, it’s about 1 hour, 40 mins to 2 hours one way on public transport to any of the decent secondary schools in the Wirral. And I live in reasonable proximity to a train station. I commuted an hour in Sydney to secondary school on public transport, which wasn’t an issue, but two hours will start to impact on academia for a child. Unfortunately, public transport needs significant improvement in Liverpool.
I would move to the Wirral, however, although it’s a step up in affordability (outside of Birkenhead and Wallesey). I suppose Blue Coat is an option in Liverpool, depending whether children get in, although recently I’ve heard some not so great things about the school.
anabsentfriend@reddit
I know a lot of Australians in Brighton.
Random-Name-1901@reddit (OP)
That’s one area I’ve been told they love. Maybe I need to head there too; another place I’ve never been!
flippertyflip@reddit
Not an Aussie but my Aussie mate from London moved to Skipton and will probably never leave.

East Anglia = Best Anglia
It's comparatively sunny, great relatively empty beaches, lots of amazing old castles/stately homes etc that we don't get at home and it has one of the best universities in the whole world (I speak of course of ARU).
Also way way way more sciencey jobs than you will ever find in Oz.
Random-Name-1901@reddit (OP)
Oo thanks for the reply - weirdly I've never been! Maybe i should now...

On a flipside: My aunt (no idea if it's one or two greats) used to love returning to Norfolk (she's too old now to make the flight from queensland) and my cousin did half her gap year in Norfolk. She did find the beaches strange in the winter. She did love Wales and visiting Yorkshire moors though.
(I hope it helped having the perspective of someone who's family did the reverse, although my cousin was born in Australia)
barrybreslau@reddit
It's flat as fuck. If you are into hills, it might not be for you.
StillJustJones@reddit
Yeah, the east of England has many things but is lacking a fair bit of topography eh.
tgerz@reddit
Haha thanks for this. That's actually a great point and valuable to me.
barrybreslau@reddit
Here are some good English counties to consider, in no particular order: Shropshire, Worcestershire, Dorset, Northumbria, Yorkshire (North Yorks), Sussex, Avonmouth (Bristol), Wiltshire.
SailLast2471@reddit
Avonmouth is a grotty part of Bristol with an industrial port, not a county. Bristol itself is a county.
barrybreslau@reddit
I snuck it in

Oh nice - been there long?
One-Zebra-150@reddit
Two Aussies in our nearest small village in N. Ireland. Husband and wife, both physiotherapists. They have both told me separately they love the scenery, rural living and slower pace of life. Said they regard it as home and don't intend to ever return to Aus. Similar with me, I don't want to return to England.
One was head physio for Chelsea football club, and for a while he commuted regularly between N. Ireland and London. Great no nonsense guy, supervised me boot camp style through exercises after a big op on my foot an ankle. Bloody painful, like a slave driver, but got me walking again amazingly faster than the surgeon or I expected. They have an Aussie friend who lives nearby.
Random-Name-1901@reddit (OP)
Wow thanks for the reply. I’m yet to go to Northern Ireland, but really want to. Will have to pick your brains if and when I go!
One-Zebra-150@reddit
When you get the time to go DM me. I'll help!
Redheadedgypsyheart@reddit
Birmingham! But went to Norfolk, Edinburgh, Ireland first.
Random-Name-1901@reddit (OP)
Interesting! How do you find Birmingham and what has made you stay?
Redheadedgypsyheart@reddit
I don't like it much to be honest. I came here for a man (I know, I know) and then it ended some years later but I had a great job and a great house and pets so I stayed. Edinburgh was the absolute best place I've lived. My friends all went to London but as much as I love them I knew if I joined them I would be hanging out with all the same friends as back home, doing the same things but just in a different country so I went to Edinburgh to ensure I met new people and learned about a different culture. I only intend to stay in Birmingham a few more years and then I hope to move somewhere else. Maybe Istanbul or somewhere exotic!!
Random-Name-1901@reddit (OP)
Oh sorry to hear that but thanks for sharing. So going back to Aus not on the list? (Somewhere exotic sounds nice!)
Redheadedgypsyheart@reddit
I am hoping to spend half the time in oz and half the time somewhere else warm and exotic, but I'm working on being self employed first. If I can wing it so my years are made up entirely of springs and summers I will be happy! that is my longer term plan!
Random-Name-1901@reddit (OP)
Oh nice that was my plan (I’m self employed too) but haven’t yet pulled the second part off 😅
Redheadedgypsyheart@reddit
great idea hope we can both pull it off!
Skuhtulhu@reddit
Mate, been here almost 20 years now, about 17 of those in Edinburgh and it was alright but it wasn’t until I moved down to Cheshire that I really came to the proper realisation that I’m never going back to Australia - I just don’t want to. I live between Manchester and Chester, it’s 30 minutes on the train to Liverpool, 2 hours by road to BEAUTIFUL North Wales. All things to see and do, and I get to work from home. Also…darts. Lots of darts… 😆
Random-Name-1901@reddit (OP)
Thanks so much that’s a great answer. How amazing is north wales?! Feels like a second home for me. Weirdly not been to Chester though, I need to change that soon!
Aggravating_Cloud657@reddit
My Aussie friend lives in Scotland.
Random-Name-1901@reddit (OP)
Tell them I said hi!
PurplePlodder1945@reddit
Everyone where I live in south wales would be fascinated by the fact that you’re an Aussie! And come out with the usual stupid accents, trying to be funny but it would be in jest.
Also, because of the state of wales at the moment, people tend to want to emigrate so they would probably ask why you’re here. The grass is always greener on the other side
Random-Name-1901@reddit (OP)
Ha yeah I get it a lot but point out that folks in aus are trying to get out too. Theres no paradise here - at least cost of living is lots lower! TBH though mostly people are borderline mean with the fact I’ve come here - I am feeling good about life and then you get spoken to like you’re mad! So feel free to hook me up with your friends, maybe the fascination will be a welcome change 😅
PurplePlodder1945@reddit
I honestly don’t get why they’re mean. What part of wales do you live in? My own nephew and his partner moved to Australia then New Zealand just before lockdown. Stayed a year or two then came home but they’re talking of going back.
Public-Magician535@reddit
East Midlands here, been here 5 years, love it, I love telling the English I love it too because it riles them up
Random-Name-1901@reddit (OP)
Haha oh yeah! I honestly get questioned in an almost aggressive way regarding why the hell I'm here. When I tell them because I like it they don't know what to do with themselves!
kernowgringo@reddit
They'll be on our beaches soon
SoggyWotsits@reddit
I’m not one, but there seem to be quite a few here in Cornwall. Very nice people too!
Random-Name-1901@reddit (OP)
Ooo if I don't move back that's where I want to end up! Interesting to know there's a few there! Is that where you're based?
Lister_RD_169@reddit
Not an Aussie but there seems to be quite a few of them in Edinburgh and Newcastle.
