AllesK@reddit
15 minutes into the future
ridicalis@reddit
Those so inclined can still find it on Tubi
PenisVanDyke@reddit
I tried watching this show on Plex or Sling.
All I wanted to do was see these animations. But the show was way too boring to make it that far.
Although, I enjoyed seeing a young George Bluth.
Scienceboy7_uk@reddit
YES
AppleSmoker@reddit
He was Max Headroom??!! No wayyy I never knew that. I mostly knew him from Honey I Shrunk the Kids growing up, and as Moloch from Watchmen
Doshin108@reddit
And the show 'Doctor Doctor'
AmbassadorCheap3956@reddit
I loved Doctor Doctor.
Desperate-Pen7530@reddit
Matt Frewer
He was all over 90s Canadian tv.
BrazenlyGeek@reddit
He was the neighbor kids’ dad on “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!” too.
CraigKostelecky@reddit
Also Trashcan Man in the 1994 version of The Stand.
MineNowBotBoy@reddit
Also Russel Tresh from Generation X!
I have no idea why that’s where my mind always goes when I see him.
Ultradude47@reddit
I also saw Generation X
Collector479@reddit
Never put that together but yeah. I'm not even gonna verify it because I know it's true now that I think about it.
They did a pretty good job with that, considering it was a low budget made-for-TV miniseries. Trashcan was spot on. Could've done better casting Flagg, though.
Laszlo-Panaflex@reddit
He was also good in Orphan Black.
robotatomica@reddit
He also has an outstanding role in The Knick, one of the world’s all-time greatest shows that sadly has languished in relative obscurity for being a premium cable show (Cinemax) just before the advent of streaming.
If it had even just been on HBO, I’m certain it would have ended up being regarded as one of the greats like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad.
Anyway, Frewer plays Dr. J.M. Christiansen, the chief surgeon at Knickerbocker Hospital 1900 NYC, a brilliant man guiding his protege through what ultimately is another failed attempt at the as-yet never accomplished placenta previa surgery he has spent much of his career trying to perfect.
His acting is exquisite, just completely commands every scene even against Clive Owen’s best work. Dr. Christiansen remains charismatic and you can only barely see the weariness and total despondency that ultimately overtakes him for failing yet again to save the life of both mother and baby.
Seriously one of the greatest debut episodes of any show I’ve ever seen. Tried to find a clip with him, but not having any luck.
RandomWarthog79@reddit
Like the other greatest show of its decade, Halt and Catch Fire, The Knick has sadly fallen all the way to the bottom of the memory hole with nary a soul having seen it. I still hope we get the Algernon spinoff, but it seems less likely with each passing year.
robotatomica@reddit
I haven’t see Halt and Catch Fire, I will have to! we have The Knick and Star Trek overlap, so I trust your taste!
jaap_null@reddit
He was in Eureka two decades ago.
Yes. Two Decades.
Independent_Shoe3523@reddit
He also did a killer commercial for the upgrade to broadcast standards I think in the UK.
Titanosaurus_Mafune@reddit
Also Sherlock Holmes
CanadianPropagandist@reddit
The pilot of the TV show is still really badass Cyberpunk
According_Sound_8225@reddit
The entire TV series is. It's a highly underrated/unknown show. I rewatched it 10 years ago and was surprised how well it has held up.
Bender_2024@reddit
He also had a recurring role on Eureka.

Well, he was in Lawnmowerman 2: Beyond Cyberspace. A very Max Headroom vibe.

This movie holds the distinction of being the only movie I watched in the theater that I regret not walking out on.
AllesK@reddit
Assos99@reddit
The only answer. But there was a rumor the role was written for Robin Williams
Schickie@reddit
No rumor. It was but he couldn’t do it at the last minute so MF got the gig.
daveprogrammer@reddit
He was one lucky MF.
AppropriateCap8891@reddit
How in the hell could they have ever afforded Robin Williams to introduce music videos on a low budget show?
Because that is literally how he started. He was just another "VJ", like Nina Blackwood, Downtown Julie Brown, Carmen Electra, and Dweezil Zappa. Something to be thrown in between airings of the biggest music videos of the time.
It was only when the response was better than they ever expected that the idea formed to turn the character into the star of his own actual show.
I have no idea how this rumor started, I never heard it and it makes no sense at all if you understand how the character was created in the first place and for what.
DJWGibson@reddit
The Star Trek role was written for Williams, not Max Headroom.
AppropriateCap8891@reddit
Not true.
One simply has to remember that the character was created as the host of an extremely low budget music video show. in 1984. At that time, Robin Williams was just leaving Mork & Mindy and moving into movies. He had already made the highly praised "World According to Garp", and even more importantly "Moscow on the Hudson".
Max Headroom was literally a low budget music video host, there was no way in hell they could have ever afforded Robin Williams to do that.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit
I think they were talking about the role of Berlinghoff Rasmussen that was written for Robin, and it was. Not Headroom.
Assos99@reddit
Surprising Robin Williams/Star Trek Connections
AppropriateCap8891@reddit
That is talking about the Star Trek role, not Max Headroom.
Assos99@reddit
Oh, Robin was never going to be Max. Max was an English creation.
RomiBraman@reddit

He was also great in National Lampoon’s Senior Trip with a young Jeremy Renner.

duck1123@reddit
I recently read that when they were doing Dune '84, they were concerned about being seen as a Star Wars rip-off due to all the similarities.

Gosh Matt Frewer reminds me of Jim Carrey
Why was Matt Frewer as famous as Jim Carrey?
BonjKansas@reddit
Because no one says Jim Carrey reminds you of Matt Frewer. No one does Jim like Jim
ReallyGlycon@reddit
I don't think he wanted to be. He is a character actor. He wrote and article once for Variety going over why he chooses smaller projects and prefers to play a specific kind of role.
QualifiedApathetic@reddit
Yeah, I saw it for the first time since childhood like a year or so ago. I was most shook to recognize Buffy's mom.
Frewer was 31 when it came out!

Matt Frewer was playing that character well before Carrey was a known.
RhinoRationalization@reddit
True, but there is still some validity in what OP is saying. They do both capture a certain vibe on their performances.

Except OP has them the wrong way round. Carrey gives Frewer vibes.

Nah Jerry Lewis was the first

I’m sure we could find some Shakespearean character that Lewis gives vibes of.

It was contemporary I believe. Living colour was in TV at this time
tyme@reddit
Frewer had been acting for a while before TNG.

The higher, the Frewer!

Ok but TBF, Jerry Lewis was the first (wasn’t a fan of his either, but he’s where Jim Carey got it)

gigantisaurus86@reddit
He did voice Carrey's character, Lloyd Christmas, in the short lived "Dumb and Dumber: The Animated Series" from the mid-90s.
Used-Gas-6525@reddit
Both Canadian. Maybe that's it.
Additional_Fruit931@reddit
Jim and Matt are both Canadian so I seriously think it's all in the voice more than anything. If you had a blind person listen to his performance and told them it was Jim Carrey, they'd probably believe you.
That said, this episode is the only thing I've seen Frewer in that gives off "Jim Carrey vibes".
