[@therealkaribyron] Random thoughts from techpocalypse while riding in an autonomous car. Am I crazy? Are you guys all talking about this too?

Every week I talked about AI with at least one person.
Let me tell you AI is an amazing tool, for people doing A LOT of stuff.
But in the wrong hands, it just makes people lazy and easier to get biassed.
We don't need tools to think for ourselves, we need tools to be better thinkers, and AI in todays standards is just making people stupid.
monkeyballhoopdreams@reddit
I said this on IG but this is totally going to happen. We are all going to be replaced BUT it isn't a bad thing as long as we are forward thinking enough to get laws in place before that.
Machine learning and robots are the ones doing the work, we get paid to teach them and be there when they f#$& up.
It's like MegaMan Battle Network.

Mythical bust

Yes, as a teacher, we ate discussing AI a lot

As a parent, aside from teaching my kids a love of science, curiosity and general "be nice to thinking beings human/alien/uplifted/virtual/other" kind of mentality... I have no clue how to prepare them for a future that is shaping up to be wild
Driver's license?
College?
Home ownership?
Bank account?
Orbital solar collector maintenance scheduling?
Yeah... Getting hard to predict the next year or two.
ExcaliburZSH@reddit
Teach them to research answers, not to just ask AI for an answer.
ianyboo@reddit
I imagine that eventually the answers could be so good from AI that it might feel a bit like arguing with a calculator. Something like:
Not because you can’t override it, but because it’s just consistently right. Not saying that's a good or bad thing, just... the possible shape of things.

I can't take kary serious since she did that shell greenwashing thing.

The. Uh. What now?

I know that AI won't take my job, because my workplace is actively afraid of technology. In fact, the most advanced computer we have in our office still runs Windows XP...
ianyboo@reddit
But do you know that AI won't shatter all the underlying assumptions and industry around your particular job?
If you are a horse shoe blacksmith and you see cars replacing horses one might scoff and say "sucks for all those horse owners! Glad I'm in a safe industry!"

I work in corrections, specifically the creation, handling and transfer of physical files, and we have no plans to get rid of said physical files, since (according to my supervisors) they aren't nearly as vulnerable to unauthorized acquisition as electronic files.
ianyboo@reddit
Okay yeah you might be good for a while lol
We've probably got 5 or 10 years before crime just doesn't even make sense anymore. And maybe another 10 after that before "life sentences" have to get reevaluated because life extension is making it seem cruel and unusual
Malakai0013@reddit
Sounds like a cyber security nightmare.
WeightOk2102@reddit
It's not as bad as you may think; especially since our office also lacks any kind of internet access.

I would say that if an AI apocalypse happened, at the very worst, things would probably be like iRobot. Most people would probably just be put into house arrest while robots do everything.
NewToSociety@reddit
Don't worry Kari, us normies hate AI, too.
Cynfreh@reddit
It crops up in general conversation but we're not at all worried about it but I do live in the UK in the countryside so I'm pretty well removed from it all mainly.

I would never willingly put myself in one of those cars...
jakeod27@reddit
It’s fine, I took one from the airport to my house because all the uber and Lyfts were taken. Pleasant experience
CordieRoy@reddit
Why?
rblask@reddit
Would prefer to have an Uber driver who's been driving for 12 straight hours and is texting
LocutusOfBeard@reddit
Yeah. I work in tech though.
floridajenjen@reddit
Same.
ComesInAnOldBox@reddit
Sort of. We're more worried about people that have a fundamental misunderstanding of what AI actually is trying to force it to do things it isn't good at doing and causing some serious problems because of it than anything else.
