We might finally get to see a few workplaces outside of Engineering, Sickbay, and 10-Forward. Let's see "Ensign Ricard" visit the barbershop. There are like a thousand people on this ship, what the hell do they do all day?
Thatās what I discovered as a child watching this episode. That it is best to be reckless in youth because otherwise your life will be so very different. Safe. But my God, itāll be boring. Everything I needed to learn, I discovered from Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
I read about a woman or girl-- true story, I think-- who was held prisoner in a bathroom for years and wrote stories on the TP, knowing she'd have to destroy them. That's what a real artist is, imo, someone who creates art because they can't not. And then these plagiarist idiots come along and are like, "but what if I can't do it myself?" Then you're not a writer, not an artist, not creative. Get over it and move on.
Also this podcast, Alice Isn't Dead, talks at one point about how we say some art isn't art, but art doesn't have to be good to be art, there can be terrible art that's still art, then goes on to make the same point about freedom, that there can be terrible freedom . . .
True. Re the writing on TP, I read once that "talent does what it can, genius does what it must" Being creative as a way to stay sane in a bad situation.
I think it was Heinlein who put it in a particularly twisted fashion: "Writers write because it hurts less not to." (Ie, writers write because it hurts, because the pain makes life meaningful)
People will hate me for this, but I hope AI content can find a way to coexist with human made content. I'd be interested in watching shows I think are interesting and that I can make without having to spend millions in development. Would really democratize story telling against hollywood
Asimov worried so much about how robots were going to affect society and history and everything else but he never was able to conceive that we would get halfway to Artificial Intelligence, declare that we got all the way, and then just rearrange society around a big wet shart
I find it weird how people are so offended at AI created images but are totally cool with photoshopped ones. (not suggesting you do this, just people in general.)
It's like all this uproar over one tool used to create fake things but ok if another tool is used. Like someone suddenly got upset that people started using sledge hammers over regular hammers.
The funny thing is that I'm a professional photographer and could do bad (or good) Photoshop jobs no problem. The reality is that I don't have an hour to spend doing manual labor just for a random laugh on Reddit. The 'creative aspect is the concept, not the monkey work. Also the irony is that I would have burned more electricity running Photoshop for an hour, than the tool I locally ran on my own GPU for 16 seconds. Some people need to loosen up...
And what's funny is the sub this anti AI opinion is being discussed on. It's literally a TV show about the future. Where an AI is the answer to every question they have on the show. "Computer *insert question here*". Like it's one of the main stars of the show that's basically off screen and we never think twice about it because THAT is the future and now that it's on our doorstep in real life people are all upset about it. It's so weird.
AI destroys the environment, massively increases electricity costs, plagiarizes other peopleās work without permission or credit, and is extremely lazy. Itās an objectively terrible thing
These were the posters whale oil companies were promoting when electricity was being introduced to civilization because it was a direct threat to their business. Anti AI propaganda is the same thing. It's just rhetoric meant to keep the status quo, destabilize communities and a bid to keep technological advancement back so that other countries can catch up.
[End of the episode]. Picard: Beverly, I know youāre a single mom raising a teenage son by yourself. I want to pay for your son to go to the Academy. Full scholarship. So that you donāt have to cover the costs. And to you Ricard, I know you have a passion for Jazz. I want to pay for a recording contract and deal to release 3 albums.
"Ahhh, yes Lieutenant. Don't mind me my good boy, I'm just an average working Joseph! Do take note of my mustache, a natural feature I possess and not an intentional totemic object being used to conjure the idea of a working man in the way the Bard would conjure beauty from the humors themselves.
Anyhow, what do you all think of that Picard chap? He's quite fetching, no?"

There's a couple other times, like the time Worf gets scared by Mot's scissors. That's what I'm saying! Three times in seven years is not enough Mot.
