I can't find any public outdoor pools that are open?

I moved down here from Canada a year ago. It's already extremely hot in DFW in March, and I'd love to go swimming and enjoy the weather! My apartment building doesn't open the pool until Memorial Day??? Huh??? And when I search around most outdoor pools seem to only have an extremely short season May-August? What??? What's going on, I can't wrap my brain around this? Why is it so hard to find an outdoor pool to go swimming?
EnvironmentalLuck515@reddit
Extremely hot? Oh you poor soul. Have you been here through a full summer yet? This is simply pleasant. It isn't hot yet. And no, unheated outdoor pools are not open yet
Nice-Feeling-3365@reddit (OP)
Haha! Yes last summer I was here and loved the heat! I come from a place where we get 3-4 months of nice weather per year so I am loving it. Perspective right? š
NegotiationSalt666@reddit
The last few summers have been insanely mild. I kinda miss the actual heat of 100s
SunTop2753@reddit
I think it was 2022? Where every day from like June through August was a low of like 90! The weatherman deemed it 100 days of 100 plusā¦now that was brutal!
Primary_Excuse_7183@reddit
Las summer was cool by comparison the the 2 summers before it. Lol i also hate they donāt open the pools year round. Sometimes itās 90s in march is pool weatherš¤·š¾āāļøš
EnvironmentalLuck515@reddit
I am glad you are happy here. š
dollydap@reddit
Haha came to say the same. āExtremely hotā when itās mid-high 80s⦠oh honey, bless. Pleasant is šÆ
DoubleBookingCo@reddit
Unless itās heated I find the water to be way too cold right now.
DeepYogurtcloset3235@reddit
Fraternal Order of the Eagles in East Dallas is open pretty much year round
Nice-Feeling-3365@reddit (OP)
I saw someone mention this, but apparently it's members only right now? I can't find any more info.
mike_lowrey214@reddit
No, you can buy a guest pass for $10. FYI, they're not open to the public every weekend unless they have lifeguards available.
Nice-Feeling-3365@reddit (OP)
Do you just show up and buy? How to know what weekends?
mike_lowrey214@reddit
Yes, just show up. Check social media or give them a call.
paceplace@reddit
they just opened it to the public this week, you should be good to go as a non-member now
MoulinSarah@reddit
Ummm this is far from extremely hot. Itās still kinda chilly sometimes.
Nice-Feeling-3365@reddit (OP)
Lol ya I know but hot enough for me to want to swim!
momboss79@reddit
Extremely hot? lol well⦠you just wait.
To answer your question though - public pools or those operated for public use (like apartments/HOAs) donāt tend to open year round. A year round pool can be found in a personal backyard.
Thereās a few reasons why. For city/public pools - thatās just when they operate. The city has less cost to operate 3 months a year than 12. For businesses, itās the same however, they mostly employee students who attend school. No one is going to a pool when school is in session during the day - sure, they can be open during the weekends but thatās a lot of maintenance for not much in revenue.
I think itās still too cool for swimming. Itās chilly at night and not getting hot enough during the day to actually heat the water so you wonāt find me in a pool until May or June. (And Iām a full blown Texan with hot flashes).
Thereās nothing really going on - itās just how it operates. Pools are open for summer. That starts around Memorial Day and ends around Labor Day.

Crazy because when you go to places in Florida you see outdoor pools open year-round with not much different weather.
Sexii_Taco@reddit
I get my fix from the nearby state parks, sunrise to sunset are the typical hours. It is lake swimming, so not for everyone
Nice-Feeling-3365@reddit (OP)
Yeah I am considering lake swimming too, where I come from in Canada I used to lake swim a lot, but all granite bottom lakes so very clear.
ashl9@reddit
Honey. It's not even hot yet.
Nice-Feeling-3365@reddit (OP)
Yeah I know but hot enough for pools :)
justonemom14@reddit
Try a gym with an indoor pool.
Another idea is I heard of an app where you can rent a pool by the hour, like Airbnb. I haven't tried it though. I want to say it's called swimly or something like that.
Nice-Feeling-3365@reddit (OP)
Yeah I saw that too, an option but mehhh!
liquidnight247@reddit
All the Lifetime Fitness gyms have nice outdoor pools. Of course other than the crappy āHPā one. But you need a membership or know someone to take you as a guest.
Ok_Voice_9498@reddit
Itās still cool outside! 𤣠Thatās why the pools arenāt open. Not to mention, most pools are staffed by teenagers who are still in school. Memorial Day is the opening for pools across the metroplex.
ShowerShoe77@reddit
Hahahah extremely hotā¦.. just wait till August.
Suziannie@reddit
Oh honey, Iām from Canada so I get your thinking. Iād guess since you thought the muggy heat of a Canadian summer was as hot as it could get.
But this is what the locals refer to as āoutdoor seasonā. Meaning this is the time of year itās pleasant enough to be outside. By end of next June youāll have a totally different idea of what āhotā is, and sadly by July youāll be seconding guessing the move as it will only get hotter and unlike in Canada, when it gets dark or rains, the heat does not go away. If anything it intensifies.
PyramidOfMediocrity@reddit
School term doesn't end until the last weeks of May. Most outdoor pools would not be used until then. Only at the weekend, and it costs an arm and a leg to keep a pool staffed, balanced, and circulating 7 days a week only to have it be used for 2.
Crookedandaskew@reddit
Yep. Most pools in Texas will open after Memorial Day. Young kids are out of school along with the high schoolers and college kids serving as life guards.
sapphirekangaroo@reddit
and the cost of heating the pool - the water would still be a bit chilly for most Texans until May unless was heated.
VeViArgh@reddit
Dallas Pools have the indoor pools open for laps.
AirportGirl53@reddit
Bless you, enjoy the cooler 80's while you can.
IslandLlama@reddit
The Semones (formerly Town North) YMCA in Dallas has its outdoor pool open a few days a week right now. You might check if any other Ys in your part of the metroplex do.
fadedblackleggings@reddit
Racism.
MsMo999@reddit
Youāll have to spend night in hotel most of them have opened their pools.
PlayfulOtterFriend@reddit
Maybe try an indoor pool? There are lots of those.
shellbear05@reddit
We have had a very mild winter, but we are still at least a month from pool opening weather. Even though our air temps have been in the 80s up into the low 90s on a few days (which is unseasonably warm for this time of year, the water temps are still below 75 which is quite chilly! Weāve also had some cloudy days. Outdoor pools need both sunlight and warm air temps to warm up to swimming temp. Indoor pools are a different story obviously.
There are gyms around with indoor pools that will be heated year-round for comfort. Some of those will also have hot tubs if thatās your jam.
Most public (municipal) pools will probably not be entirely free, but residents of the city usually get a discount. But neighborhood and municipal pools are unlikely to open before Memorial Day (end of May) right before schools let out for the summer.
Kathw13@reddit
Lifeguards are still in school.
xtnamht@reddit
Lifeguards are in highschool/Jr high classes right now. Lots of pools can't open until summer vacation.
